Description
本发明涉及利用硝酸蒸气对碳纤维进行官能化的方法、用这种方法改性的碳纤维及其应用。
根据现有技术,碳纳米纤维主要被认为是直径在3-100nm之间、长度为直径若干倍的圆筒状碳管。这些管由一或多层取向的碳原子构成并具有不同形态的芯。这些碳纳米纤维亦被称作例如“碳纤丝”或“中空碳纤维”。
碳纳米纤维在专业文献中早已是已知的。尽管一般将饭岛(Iijima)称作纳米管的发现者(出版物:S. Iijima, Nature 354, 56-58, 1991),但从二十世纪七十年代或八十年代初起这些材料-特别是具有多个石墨层的纤维状石墨材料就已经被人们所知了。Tates和Baker(GB 1469930A1,1977以及EP 56004 A2)最先记述了由烃的催化裂解沉积极细的纤维状碳。然而,所述基于短链烃而制造的碳纤丝并未在其直径方面得到进一步表征。
这些碳纳米纤维通常是圆筒型结构的。在圆筒状结构中又分单壁单碳纳米管(单壁碳纳米管)和多壁圆筒型碳纳米管(多壁碳纳米管)。它们的常见制造方法包括例如电弧放电、激光烧蚀、化学气相沉积(CVD法)和催化化学气相沉积(CCVD法)。
从Iijima, Nature 354, 1991, 56-8已知了使用电弧放电法来形成由两个或两个以上石墨烯层构成的碳纤维,其被卷成无缝封闭的圆筒并彼此嵌套在一起。取决于卷绕矢量,可以实现碳原子相对于碳纤维纵轴的手性和非手性排列。
其中单个连续的石墨烯层(所谓卷轴(scroll)型)或不连续的石墨烯层(所谓葱头(onion)型)形成纳米管结构的基础的碳纤维结构最先是由Bacon等人在J. Appl. Phys. 34, 1960, 283-90记述的。该结构被称为卷轴型。Zhou等人Science, 263, 1994, 1744-47和Lavin等人Carbon 40, 2002, 1123-30随后也记述了相应的结构。
由于碳纳米纤维的惰性和疏水性,表面改性和官能化对其应用、特别是在催化中的应用来说是必不可少的(Toebes, M. L等人, J. Catal. 214:78-87 (2003); de Jong K. P., Geus J. W., Catal. Rev.-Sci. Eng. 42:481-510 (2000); Serp P. 等人, Appl. Catal. A 253:337-58 (2003); Nhut, J. M. 等人, Appl. Catal. A 254:345-63(2003))。最常用的表面改性方法之一是通过部分氧化产生含氧官能团。一方面氧化使碳纳米纤维变得亲水,结果由于改善的湿润性而使得水性催化剂的预备成为可能。另一方面在表面上产生的含氧官能团可以充当催化剂前体复合物的锚点。在这里,羧基起关键作用 (Boehm,H. P., Carbon 32: 759:69(1994))。
在文献中已经记述了许多处理碳纳米纤维的方法。这些方法包括氧气处理 (Morishita, K., Takarada T., Carbon 35:977-81 (1997); Ajayan, P. M. 等人, Nature 362:522-5 (1993); Ebbesen, T. W. 等人, Nature 367:519-9 (1997)),臭氧处理(Byl, O. 等人, Langmuir 21:4200-4 (2005)),二氧化碳处理 (Tsang, S. C. 等人, Nature 262:520-2 (1993); Seo, K. 等人, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 125:13946-7 (2003)),水处理(Xia, W. 等人, Mater 19:3648-52 (2007)),过氧化氢处理 (Xu, C. 等人, Adv. Engineering Mater 8:73-77 (2006)) 和等离子体处理(Bubert, H. 等人, Anal. Bioanal. Chem. 374:1237-41 (2002)) 以及最常用的硝酸处理 (Lakshminarayanan, P. V. 等人, Carbon 42:2433-42 (2004); Darmstadt, H. 等人, Carbon 36:1183-90 (1998); Darmstadt, H. 等人, Carbon 35:1581-5 (1997))。二氧化氮被用于处理传统的碳材例如无定形碳或炭黑(Jacquot, F. 等人, 40:335-43 (2002); Jeguirim, M. 等人, Fuel 84:1949-56 (2005))。这些处理的一个目的还可能是清洗、撕碎和打开碳纳米管 (Liu, J. 等人, 280:1253-6 (1998))。
首先如果需要大量的羧基,则只有强氧化剂例如腐蚀性反应条件下的硝酸或硝酸与硫酸的混合物可被有效地用于制造含氧官能团(Toebes, M. L. 等人, Carbon 42:307-15; Ros, T.G. 等人, 8:1151-62 (2002))。然而,这种用液相的腐蚀性酸进行的氧化常常会引起对碳纳米纤维的结构破坏(Ros, T.G. 等人, 8:1151-62 (2002); Zhang, J. 等人, J. Phys. Chem. B 107:3712-8 (2003)),这至少部分是由回流和搅拌产生的机械应力引起的。此外,特别是对于小直径的碳纳米纤维,从酸中分离处理过的碳纳米纤维很困难。分离通常通过过滤进行,但这会导致损失相当数量的碳纳米纤维。另外,随后的干燥过程也常常会导致碳纳米纤维附聚,这对碳纳米纤维的可用性有影响。
为避免这些问题,气相处理似乎是很有吸引力的替代方案。然而,传统的使用空气、臭氧、氧气或等离子体的气相处理通常不如使用硝酸进行处理有效(Ros, T.G. 等人, 8:1151-62 (2002))。在WO 06/135439中,通过XPS对所用各种氧化方法进行测量,得到了0.069的最大氧气表面浓度。另外已知由于缺水,使用这些方法会形成比羧基还多的羰基,从而碳纳米纤维被官能化的效率不高。
目前,使用在水溶液中的腐蚀性酸进行的氧化处理是最有效的方法。其最大的缺陷在于:
1.由搅拌和回流加热引起的机械应力是导致碳纳米纤维的结构破坏的至少部分原因;
2.通过过滤分离酸处理过的碳纳米纤维、特别是小直径的纳米纤维总是伴随着高损失;
3.随后的干燥过程还会导致碳纳米纤维附聚,降低它们的可用性。
由于气相法能避免上述问题,所以它们是所述传统处理方法的有吸引力的替代方案。然而,传统的气相处理(臭氧、空气和等离子体等)与使用硝酸处理相比效率较低。且还已知由于水的缺乏迄今为止会优选形成羰基,较不优选形成羧基。
US 04/0253374记述了一种用预先处理过的稀释的硝酸水溶液和在温度在400℃的流化床反应器中使用氦作为载气清洗和增强碳纳米纤维的方法,其中在表面上形成硝基。该方法的缺点在于氦的大量使用,以保持碳纳米纤维附聚物悬浮,以及由于利用载气进行的将碳粒子揉搓到一起而形成的粉尘。
WO 02/45812 A2记述了一种清洗碳纳米纤维的方法,其中在处理纤维之前先使蒸气凝结,因此必须对纤维进行过滤。
由此,本发明的目的在于提供一种尽可能简单但却高效的气相方法,其可以对碳纤维加以改性和官能化而不产生结构和形态变化。
在第一实施方案中,本发明的目的是通过一种碳纤维官能化的方法实现的,其中
a)将碳纤维1放在具有入口3和出口4的反应器2中,
b)将反应器2加热到125-500℃范围内的温度,
c)将硝酸5的蒸气导过反应器2,和
d)随后干燥处理过的碳纤维。
在本发明的范围内"硝酸"并不排除其被用水稀释或例如与硫酸结合使用。
由此提供一种避免了成问题的过滤分离的简单但高效的通过用硝酸蒸气处理而对碳纤维加以官能化的方法。与传统的湿式HNO3处理相比,可以通过X射线光电子能谱(XPS)在表面上检测到明显更多量的氧类型。该处理不会损害形态或附聚程度。
由此提供一种用于碳纳米纤维的氧化和官能化的新的气相方法。与使用液体硝酸的传统方法相比,用硝酸蒸气处理经证明是一种在例如碳纳米纤维表面上产生含氧官能团的更有效的方法,其中形态和附聚程度不受损害且可以自由选择处理温度。另外,使用HNO3气相处理之所以更有利还在于避免了过滤、冲洗和干燥步骤。
碳纳米纤维,特别是那些外径在3-500nm范围内的碳纳米纤维有利地被用作碳纤维。直径可以例如利用透射电子显微术(TEM)来确定。如果使用直径低于所述优选范围的碳纤维,则存在碳纤维在处理过程中被破坏或至少其机械性能被严重损害的可能。如果使用外径高于所述优选范围的碳纤维,则比BET表面积对于特定应用例如催化来说可能会过小。
在本发明的范围内,碳纳米纤维是圆筒型、卷轴型或具有葱头状结构的所有单壁或多壁碳纳米管。优选使用圆筒或卷轴型的多壁碳纳米管或其混合物。特别优选使用长度与外径之比大于5、优选地大于100的碳纳米纤维。
碳纳米纤维特别优选地以附聚体的形式使用,其中该附聚体的平均直径特别是在0.05-5mm、优选地0.1-2mm、特别优选地0.2-1mm的范围内。
优选地,所使用的碳纳米纤维的平均直径基本上为3-100nm、优选地5-80nm、特别优选地6-60nm。
与开始时提到的已知的只具有一个连续或不连续的石墨烯层的卷轴型CNT不同,申请人还发现了由多个堆在一起并卷起的石墨烯层构成的CNT结构(多卷轴型)。这些碳纳米管和由其形成的碳纳米管附聚体由例如至今尚未公开的正式申请号为102007044031.8的德国专利申请提供。其与CNT以及CNT的制造有关的内容由此将被包括在本申请的公开内容之内。此CNT结构与简单的卷轴型碳纳米管相比类似于多壁圆筒单碳纳米管(圆筒MWNT)结构与单壁圆筒碳纳米管(圆筒SWNT)相比。
与葱头型结构相反,在横截面上观察时这些碳纳米纤维中的单个石墨烯层或石墨层清楚地无间断地从CNT的中心连续延伸到外缘。这使得可以实现,例如,其它材料在所述管骨架中的更好、更快的插入,因为与简单卷轴结构的CNT(Carbon 34, 1996, 1301-3)或葱头型结构的CNT(Science 263, 1994, 1744-7)相比存在更多可用作插入夹层的入口区的开口边。
目前已知的制造碳纳米管的方法包括电弧放电法、激光烧蚀法和催化法。在许多这些方法中,会作为副产品形成炭黑、无定形碳和大直径的纤维。在催化法中又分负载的催化剂颗粒的沉积和原位形成的直径在纳米范围内的金属核心的沉积(所谓流水作业法)。对于通过由在反应条件下呈气体形式的烃催化沉积碳(下面称作CCVD:催化碳气相沉积)而进行的制备,可能的碳给体有乙炔、甲烷、乙烷、乙烯、丁烷、丁烯、丁二烯、苯及其它含碳反应物。因此优选使用可通过催化法获得的CNT。
催化剂通常包含金属、金属氧化物或可降解的和/或可还原的金属组分。在现有技术中用于催化剂的金属有例如Fe、Mo、Ni、V、Mn、Sn、Co、Cu及其它副族元素。尽管单个金属大部分具有支持形成碳纳米管的趋势,但根据现有技术使用基于上述金属的组合的金属催化剂会有利地获得高产率和低无定形碳含量。因此优选地使用可利用混合催化剂获得的CNT。特别有利的用于制造CNT的催化剂体系是基于包含两种或两种以上选自Fe、Co、Mn、Mo和Ni系列的元素的金属或金属化合物的组合的催化剂体系。
经验表明,碳纳米管的形成以及所形成的管的性能与用作催化剂的金属组分或多种金属组分的组合、任选使用的催化剂载体材料以及催化剂与载体的相互作用、反应气体和反应气体分压、氢气或其它气体的掺合、反应温度、停留时间以及所用反应器有复杂的相关性。由WO 2006/050903 A2中已知一种特别优选地用于制造碳纳米管的方法。
在到目前为止提到的使用各种催化剂体系的不同方法中,制造了不同结构的碳纳米管,它们可以主要作为碳纳米管粉末从所述过程中除去。
适用于本发明的进一步优选的碳纳米纤维可通过在以下参考文献中大体记述的方法获得。
在EP 205556 B1中首次记述了制造直径小于100nm的碳纳米管。轻(即短链和中链脂族或者单环或双环芳族)烃和铁基催化剂被用于其中所述的制造,在所述催化剂上碳载体化合物在800-900℃以上的温度裂解。
WO 86/03455 A1记述了制造具有3.5-70nm的恒定直径、大于100的纵横比(长度对直径的比)和芯区的圆筒状构造的碳纤丝。这些纤丝由绕该纤丝的圆筒轴同心排列的许多取向的碳原子连续层构成。利用含金属的颗粒,在850℃-1200℃之间的温度下通过CVD工艺由含碳化合物制造这些圆筒状纳米管。
由WO2007/093337A2已知了另一种制造适用于制造具有圆筒状结构的传统碳纳米管的催化剂的方法。在固定床中使用此催化剂能得到提高的直径在5-30nm范围的圆筒碳纳米管产率。
Oberlin,Endo和Koyam(Carbon 14, 1976, 133)记述了一种完全不同的制造圆筒碳纳米纤维的方法。在这里,使芳香烃例如苯在金属催化剂上反应。形成的碳管具有清晰的近乎催化剂颗粒直径的石墨中空芯,在其上有少得多的石墨取向的碳。通过在高温下处理(2500℃-3000℃),全部管都可被石墨化。
大部分上述方法(电弧放电、喷射热解或CVD)现在都被用于制造碳纳米管。然而,单壁圆筒碳纳米管的制造在涉及的装置方面非常复杂,且所述已知方法形成速率极低并通常具有许多会导致高比例的不期望杂质的副反应,其意味着所述方法的产率较低。因此甚至现在这种碳纳米管的制造在技术上也极其复杂,因此它们大部分都只少量用于高度专业化的应用。将它们用于本发明是可以想得到的,但不如使用圆筒或卷轴型多壁CNT优选。
嵌套的无缝圆筒纳米管形式或上述卷轴或葱头结构形式的多壁碳纳米管的制造目前在商业上以较大量进行,主要使用催化方法。这些方法通常表现出比上述电弧放电和其它方法更高的产率,且目前一般以公斤级的规模(全世界每天几百公斤)执行。用这种方法制造的MW碳纳米管通常远比单壁纳米管便宜并由此被例如作为性能促进添加剂用于其它材料中。
由于该原因,还优选使用BET表面积在10-500m2/g、特别是20-200m2/g范围内的碳纤维。BET比表面积可例如使用Porotec公司的仪器Sorptomatic 1990根据DIN 66131确定。如果使用BET表面积低于该优选范围的碳纤维,如上面已经指出的,这可能导致该碳纤维不再适用于某些应用目的,例如催化。如果使用BET表面积高于该优选范围的碳纤维,则可能导致在用硝酸蒸气处理过程中碳纤维被过度严重地腐蚀乃至破坏。
在本发明的方法中,优选地在反应器出口4后设置冷凝器6,冷凝器的冷凝物出口7通过回线8连接到硝酸5的存储容器9。这可以防止凝结的液态硝酸浸湿存在于反应器中的碳纤维。因此,在硝酸蒸气相中的处理使得碳纤维表面能比在液相中好得多地被氧改性。
优选地将特别是使用油浴10加热的玻璃烧瓶用作硝酸的存储容器9。此存储容器9有利地设置为低于反应器2。以这种方式,可以使硝酸的蒸气,在其于玻璃烧瓶中通过油浴加热之后,通过反应器入口与碳纤维发生接触。因此反应器优选地垂直设置,使硝酸蒸气的入口低于碳纤维且出口高于碳纤维。蒸气由此可流过反应器,并通过反应器出口进入冷凝器,随后硝酸在其中被凝结并被返回存储容器。反应器2借助于例如加热器11加热。
在步骤(b)之后,使反应器保持在此温度以3-20小时、特别是5-15小时范围内的一段时间。如果采用更短的时间,则表面改性将过于轻微。如果超过此优选范围,则观察不到表面改性的进一步改善。特别地,将处理期间的温度设置在低于250℃的温度,并与其独立地设置在高于150℃的温度。这些温度已被证明特别适用于用氧对碳纤维进行表面改性。
步骤(c)即干燥步骤优选地进行在0.5-4小时范围内的一段时间,且与其独立地在80-150℃范围内的温度下进行。最简单地可通过停止加热存储容器中的硝酸从而不再产生进一步的蒸气来进行干燥。
可例如借助于保持装置12将碳纤维设置在反应器内的蒸气流中。此保持装置可以是例如筛子、栅或格子。
与使用液体硝酸的传统处理相比,使用硝酸蒸气在125℃进行的五小时处理例如似乎对于例如使用碳纳米纤维作为催化剂载体来说是一种有效的方法,所述催化剂可以通过浸渍来施加。
在另一实施方案中,本发明的目的是通过特征在于氧原子与碳原子之比大于0.18的碳纤维来实现的,其中所述氧原子与碳原子之比是由使用XPS测量的原子表面浓度推算的。
使用目前已知的方法不可能制得具有这么高氧表面浓度的碳纤维。因此令人意外的是首次获得了这些碳纤维。与目前已知的表面改性的碳纤维相比,本发明的碳纤维首次提供了一种通过用有机分子进一步表面改性而开拓了崭新的应用领域的材料。
由此特别优选这种由XPS测量的原子表面浓度推算的氧原子与碳原子之比大于0.2的碳纤维。在本发明的范围内,XPS表示“X射线光电子能谱”。
对于官能化的碳纳米纤维的随后应用来说,可取的是在硝酸气相处理中于碳纳米纤维表面产生的官能团对于进一步的随后反应步骤来说尽可能活泼。应尽可能以高含量获得的自由的未酯化的羧基或羧酸基团,以及同样具有充分反应性的羧酸酐基团,是特别活泼的。
令人吃惊的是通过采用新的氧化方法可以首次获得具有特别高羧酸基团比例的碳纤维。
因此,还优选其每g化学键合形式的碳含总计超过400μmol的羧酸基团和羧酸酐基团的碳纤维。特别优选每g化学键合形式的碳含超过350μmol的羧酸基团的碳纤维。
在TPD分析中尽可能低的出口温度是为随后的反应而除去的官能团的尽可能好的反应性的一个可靠指标。由于CO2主要是在比CO低的温度下除去的,所以还优选在TPD分析中以CO2的形式除去其超过45%的化学键合氧的碳纳米纤维。最特别优选在除去或脱附CO2的基团中含的氧比在除去CO的基团中的氧多的碳纤维。
在另一实施方案中,本发明的目的是通过可通过本发明的方法获得的碳纤维实现的。
在又一实施方案中,本发明的目的是通过在复合材料中、能量存储器中、作为传感器、作为吸附剂、作为非均相催化剂的载体或作为催化活性物质使用本发明的碳纤维来实现的。
图1显示了用于使用硝酸蒸气对碳纳米纤维进行处理的装置的示意图。管式反应器通过电阻加热带加热,圆底烧瓶通过油浴加热。
图2显示了以下XPS光谱:用HNO3蒸气在不同温度下处理过15小时的碳纳米纤维的(a)XPS总览光谱,(b)C 1s XP光谱和(c)O 1s XP光谱。为了对比还显示了(d)通过传统方法用液体HNO3在120℃下处理过1.5小时的碳纳米纤维的O 1s光谱。
图3显示了由用HNO3蒸气处理在不同温度处理过不同时间的碳纳米纤维的原子表面浓度(XPS)获得的氧与碳之比。为了对比还显示了经过传统处理的氧/碳比。
图4显示了(a)未经处理的碳纳米纤维和(b)用HNO3蒸气在200℃下处理过15小时的碳纳米纤维的SEM图象。
图5显示了用气态HNO3、NO2、NO2:O2(1:1)和液体HNO3处理过的碳纳米纤维的TPD 去除分布图对比。所有的处理都进行3小时。所示图都标准化到1g碳纤维。
图6显示了碳纳米纤维的各种化学键合的含氧基团总览。
图7显示了使用所述用HNO3在200℃进行了15小时气相处理的实施例进行的TPD分布的((a)CO分布,(b)CO2分布)的峰拟合方法。
表1显示了来自对CO2去除进行的TPD测量的不同官能团的量化值。所述值的单位为μmol/g(10-6mol/g)。

实施例
使用的HNO3气相处理装置如图1所示。一般将200mg碳纳米纤维1(直径50-200nm,Applied Sciences,Ohio,USA)置入反应器2中,在不同实验中加热到125℃、150℃、175℃、200℃、250℃的温度。在圆底烧瓶9中装入150ml浓HNO3 5并在搅拌下加热到125℃。放置在顶部的逆流冷凝器6与废气连接。在规定的5、10和15小时时段后关掉油浴加热10,反应器的加热1在110℃下再保持2小时以干燥处理过的碳纳米纤维。然后广泛地表征碳纳米纤维1。所用装置有效地防止了冷凝器内冷凝的液体硝酸往回流过样品。由于完全避免了碳纳米纤维被液体硝酸浸湿,所以相应地所述处理完全在气相条件下进行。通过扫描电子显微术(LEO Gemini 1530)分析碳纳米纤维的形态。在超高真空装置中使用Gamma-data-Scienta SES 2002分析仪进行X射线光电子能谱(XPS)分析。测量室内的压力为2x10-10毫巴。使用发射能量为200eV的Al Ko辐射(1486.6eV;14kV;55mA)作为X射线辐射,使得可以实现优于0.5eV的能量分辨率。通过使用慢电子源来抵销可能的充电效应。针对284.5eV处的主要碳信号(C 1s)标定结合能。
XP光谱是一种已被证实有效的表征含氧官能团的方法。使用C 1s和O 1s光谱可以辨别不同的含氧基团(Okpalugo, T.I.T. 等人, Carbon 43:153-61 (2005); Martinez, M. T. 等人, Carbon 41:2247-56 (2003))。例如在这里显示了在不同温度下处理了15小时的碳纳米纤维的XP光谱。图2(a)显示了在不同温度下进行了15小时HNO3气相处理的碳纳米纤维的XPS总览光谱。C 1s、O 1s和O KLL区域的信号清晰可见。在约400eV处的弱N 1s信号表明了氮的存在。随着温度升高O 1s信号的强度增强,而相应地C 1s信号的强度减弱。
C 1s区域的信号指配在文献中按如下所述进行(Lakshminarayanan, P. V. 等人, Carbon 42:2433-42 (2004); Okpalugo, T.I.T. 等人, Carbon 43:153-61 (2005)):石墨中的碳在284.5eV,酚和醚中的单键连接到氧的碳(C-O)在286.1eV,酮和醌中的双键连接到氧的碳(C=O)在287.5eV,羧基、羧酸酐和酯中的结合到两个氧原子的碳(-COO)在288.7eV,芳族化合物中的碳的特征"震激"线在190.5eV( 跃迁)。图2(b)显示了15小时HNO3气相处理之后的C 1s光谱。通过比较信号的对称性可以明显看出随着温度升高而变大的在284.5eV处的C 1s主信号的更高结合能时的肩部。288.7eV处的信号的强烈增大更加明显,标志着-COO基团数量的激增。它们主要为羧基和酸酐,它们是碳表面上用于不同应用的最重要的含氧官能团。
同批次处理的碳纤维的O 1s芯能级光谱如图2(c)所示。两个主要贡献用虚线表示,分别指配给531.5eV处的醌、酮或醛中的双键连接到碳的氧原子(C=O)和533.2eV处的醚、羟基或酚中的单键连接到碳的氧原子(C-O) (Bubert, H. 等人, Anal. Bioanal. Chem. 374:1237-41 (2002); Zhang, J. 等人, J. Phys. Chem. B 107:3712-8 (2003))。由于在酯、羧基、酸酐或吡喃中同时存在与碳单键和双键结合的氧原子,所以这些基团中的两种氧原子贡献两个O 1s信号。在O 1s光谱中很明显在较低处理温度下主信号由C-O单键支配,这可能是由于在低温下羟基的优选形成。当温度升高时,C=O双键的形成急剧增加。为进行比较,在图2(d)中显示了采用传统HNO3处理过的碳纳米纤维的O 1s光谱。在这里,对533.2eV处信号的贡献大于531.6eV处,并与低温下的HNO3气相处理的光谱相似。结果表明在文献中以传统的湿式HNO3方法获得了相似的趋势,即533.2eV处的信号大于531.6eV处的信号(Martinez, M. T. 等人, Carbon 41:2247-56 (2003))。因此与使用液体HNO3的传统方法相比,HNO3气相处理不仅提高了产率还改变了碳纳米纤维上的不同含氧官能团的数量。众所周知不同的氧类型例如C=O的形成强烈取决于温度。由于122℃的浓HNO3共沸点限制,不可能在高于122℃和大气压下进行传统的HNO3处理,因此在预定反应时间内制造某些类型受到了限制。
碳和氧的原子表面浓度通过XPS测量来确定(Xia, W. 等人, Catal. Today 102-103:34-9 (2005))。经过不同处理的碳纳米纤维中的氧碳比(O/C)如图3所示。可以看出,经过125℃下的HNO3处理后O/C比为约0.155,稍高于使用传统的HNO3处理在120℃下处理1.5小时的,稍低于使用传统的混酸处理(HNO3和H2SO4)在120℃下处理1.5小时的。随着温度升高和处理时间变长,该比例增大。在175℃或200℃下处理15小时之后,该比例大于0.21。在这些条件下,碳纳米纤维上的氧量似乎达到了饱和极限,如相关曲线的变平所示。
在HNO3气相处理之后,碳纳米纤维无需额外的处理步骤如过滤、冲洗或干燥就可被进一步应用。处理后未发现碳纳米纤维的体积密度变化,且SEM图象证实没有由于该处理而发生碳纳米纤维的形态变化(图4)。采用HNO3气相处理时并未观察到采用液相HNO3的传统处理导致的通常发生的附聚。此外,该气相处理也未改变碳纳米纤维的形态(图3)。还比较了对在不同的碳基材如石墨薄膜或碳纤维上生长的碳纳米纤维所做的处理(Briggs, D. 等人, John Wiley & Sons 635-6 (2004); Li, N. 等人, Adv. Mater. 19:2957-60 (2007))。在搅拌的HNO3溶液中回流1.5小时之后,碳纳米纤维已经基本上变得从基材上脱离,结果形成深色的悬浮液。然而,在HNO3气相处理之后,碳纳米纤维完整无损地保持在基材上。此结果对于需要保持二级结构的碳纳米纤维应用,例如对于垂直取向的碳纳米纤维或分支的碳纳米纤维复合材料,来说特别重要。
为了获得有关在碳纳米纤维上反应的官能团的性质信息,进行了TPD(程序升温脱附)测量。
为此将约150-200mg官能化的碳纳米纤维(Baytubes C150P,用HNO3气体在300℃处理过3小时)放在内径10mm的水平石英管中,使氦(99.9999%纯,流量30sccm)作为载体从其上通过。然后以2K/min的加热速率将试样从室温加热到1000℃,在气流中使用在线红外探测器(Binos)来确定CO和CO2释放量。在将试样冷却回室温之前将温度在1000℃保持总共一小时。所述探测器本身首先使用指定气体针对0-4000ppm的测量范围加以标定。
为与其它氧化官能化方法相比较,按照常规在液相中用HNO3以及在气相中用NO2和用NO2与O2的混合物对碳纳米纤维(Baytubes C150P)进行了处理。在垂直的内径20mm的石英管中进行所述气相处理。在一个实验中,使NO2(氦中,10体积%)以10sccm的流速穿过碳纳米纤维床。对于使用NO2+O2进行的处理,使氧气(N2中,20.5体积%,5sccm)另外通入所述NO2/He气流中以在载气中达到1:1的NO2:O2比。对于在液相中的处理,将碳纳米纤维在浓硝酸(65%,J. T. Baker)中回流3小时。
结果(图5)显示对于不同官能化的碳纳米纤维来说,随着温度的变化CO和CO2的释放有显著不同。由此可以清楚得出,使用气相HNO3处理的碳纳米纤维释放更多的CO以及CO2,表明了总的更高的被含氧基团表面官能化。另外,用气相HNO3处理过的样品还显示在约600℃下的高CO以及CO2释放速度,这尤其表明了高比例的羧酸酐官能度。
然而,图5中的释放曲线还表明,释放CO的温度比CO2高得多。这是由于从中除去CO的官能团的更高结合强度。图6提供了通常存在于氧化的碳纳米纤维中的官能团总览。从文献中可以找到以下去除温度归属:
CO2: 化学吸附的 CO2 低于250℃
羧酸 310℃
羧酸酐 420℃
内酯 580℃
CO: 醛,酮 低于 300℃
羧酸酐 420℃
酚,醚 700℃
吡喃酮 830℃。
基于这些归属,用高斯正态分布的曲线之和对TPD曲线进行了校正(图7),并由此确定了原包含在碳纳米纤维中的官能团的定量指配(表1和2)。

Claims (14)
1. 官能化碳纤维(1)的方法,其中
a)将碳纤维(1)放在具有入口(3)和出口(4)的反应器(2)中,
b)将反应器(2)加热到125-500℃范围内的温度,
c)将硝酸(5)的蒸气导过反应器(2),和
d)随后干燥处理过的碳纤维(1)。
2. 根据权利要求1所述的方法,特征在于碳纳米纤维、特别是外径在3-500nm范围内的碳纳米纤维被用作碳纤维(1)。
3. 根据权利要求1所述的方法,特征在于BET表面积在10-500m2/g、特别是20-200m2/g范围内的碳纤维被用作碳纤维(1)。
4. 根据权利要求1所述的方法,特征在于在反应器出口(4)后提供冷凝器(6),冷凝器的冷凝物出口(7)通过回线(8)连接到硝酸的存储容器(9)。
5. 根据权利要求4所述的方法,特征在于特别是使用油浴(10)加热的玻璃烧瓶被用作硝酸的存储容器(9)。
6. 根据权利要求1所述的方法,特征在于在步骤(b)之后,使反应器(2)保持在所述温度以3-20小时、特别是5-15小时范围内的一段时间。
7. 根据权利要求1所述的方法,特征在于步骤(c)进行在0.5-4小时范围内的一段时间且与其独立地在80-150℃范围内的温度下进行。
8. 碳纤维,特征在于氧原子与碳原子之比大于0.18,其中所述氧原子与碳原子之比是由使用XPS测量的原子表面浓度推算的。
9. 碳纤维,特征在于其每g化学键合形式的碳包含超过350μmol的羧酸基团。
10. 根据权利要求9所述的碳纤维,特征在于其每g化学键合形式的碳包含总计超过400μmol的羧酸基团和羧酸酐基团。
11. 根据权利要求9或10所述的碳纤维,特征在于其在TPD分析以CO2的形式除去超过45%的化学键合氧。
12. 根据权利要求8所述的碳纤维,特征在于所述纤维的平均直径为3-500nm,且长度与直径之比为至少5:1。
13. 根据权利要求8-12之一所述的碳纤维,可通过根据权利要求1所述的方法获得。
14. 根据权利要求8-13之一所述的碳纤维在复合材料中、能量存储器中、作为传感器、作为吸附剂、作为非均相催化剂的载体或作为催化活性物质的应用。
