Abstract

Description
技术领域
本发明涉及一种显示装置,适于安装在不能或难以安装电池的设备,例如超薄型便携式设备等中。
背景技术
近年来,伴随着电子电路元件的高密度集成化和高密度安装技术的发展,提供了多种多样的便携式设备,在这些便携式设备中,用于进行信息显示的显示装置变得不可缺少。
另一方面,对于象上述那样具有显示装置的便携式设备,进一步要求其多功能化、轻量化和薄型化,最终着眼于体积和重量相对增大的电池,提出了一种不使用上述电池的便携式设备。因此,考虑利用能实现轻量化和薄型化的所谓太阳能电池单元作为上述具有显示装置的便携式设备的驱动电源。
利用太阳能电池单元驱动显示面板的技术,小型计算器(calculator)等也一直在应用,例如在下面所示的专利文献1等中就公开了这种技术。
专利文献1:特公平2-28153号公报
根据专利文献1公开的计算器,当太阳能电池单元的输出电压低于基准电压时,停止对运算电路供给电源电压,由此可以防止显示出错误的计算结果。
此外,作为利用太阳能电池单元驱动显示面板的其他技术,还提出了专利文献2和3所公开的技术。

按照上述专利文献2和3中公开的技术,除了太阳能电池单元外,还安装了2次电池,将太阳能电池单元产生的能量积蓄在2次电池中,将该2次电池的电源电压作为驱动电源使用。总之,通过使用2次电池来防止太阳能电池单元特有的电压随着外部光量的变化而变化所造成的影响。
如上所述,专利文献1~3公开的设备都是从防止太阳能电池单元特有的电压随着外部光量的变化而变化所造成的影响的观点出发,因此,采取了组合使用太阳能电池单元的输出电压的检测装置和2次电池等对策。
发明内容
本发明的目的在于提供一种显示装置,当利用太阳能电池单元驱动显示面板使其发光时,积极地利用太阳能电池单元对外部光的电压变动作用,发挥自发光显示面板的调光功能,并令用于驱动控制上述自发光面板的驱动电路工作稳定。
为了解决上述问题,本发明的显示装置如技术方案1中所记载的那样,其特征在于:具有相应于外部光的照度输出电动势的光电元件、至少配置了1个自发光元件的发光装置、和用于驱动控制上述发光装置的驱动电路,作为逻辑电路的驱动电源,通过限制上述光电元件的输出电压值的稳压电路,向安装于上述驱动电路的逻辑电路供给,并作为自发光元件的驱动电源,不经过上述稳压电路,从上述光电元件向上述自发光元件供给,上述自发光元件以与外部光的照度对应的亮度发光。

具体实施方式
下面,根据图示的实施方式说明本发明的显示装置。图1示出第1实施方式,这里,使用发光显示面板1作为发光装置,使用有机EL元件作为安装在该发光显示面板上的自发光元件构成无源矩阵型显示面板。
该显示面板1中,在纵方向排列的多根数据线(以下称阳极线)m1~m3与横方向排列的多根扫描线(以下称阴极线)n1~n3相交的各交点位置上,在数据线和扫描线之间连接了二极管的标记所表示的有机EL元件。由此,构成像素的所述有机EL元件被配置成矩阵状。
再有,在图1中,因纸面的关系,由有机EL元件构成的像素按纵横方向4行3列示出,但实质上,多个元件沿纵横方向在显示面板1的整个面上排列成矩阵形状。
符号2示出了在上述显示面板1的阳极线m1~m3上有选择地流过驱动电流的数据驱动器,虽然省略了部分图示,但在上述各阳极线上分别连接了向上述各阳极线择一地供给EL元件的点亮驱动电位或非点亮电位(例如地电位)的一对开关元件TS1、TS2。
此外,在数据驱动器2上搭载了由符号2a表示的驱动电路A,该驱动电路A包含根据图像数据对与上述阳极线对应的各开关元件TS1、TS2进行开关控制的由移位寄存器等构成的逻辑电路。
符号3示出了有选择地扫描上述显示面板1的阴极线n1~n4的扫描驱动器,虽然省略了部分图示,但在上述各阴极线上分别连接了向上述各阴极线供给扫描电位(例如地电位)或反向偏置电位的一对开关元件TS3、TS4。
此外,在扫描驱动器3上搭载了由符号3a表示的驱动电路B,该驱动电路B包含根据图像数据的扫描同步信号对与上述阴极线对应的各开关元件TS3、TS4进行开关控制的由移位寄存器等构成的逻辑电路。
另一方面,符号E1~E4是经上述数据驱动器2和扫描驱动器3向显示面板1供给驱动电力的光电元件,由太阳能电池单元的串联连接体构成。
在图1所示的实施方式中,E1~E4所示的太阳能电池单元的串联连接体的直流输出供给到限制输出电压值的稳压电路4。而且,稳压电路4作为驱动电源,其输出供给到分别包含数据驱动器2和扫描驱动器3中的上述逻辑电路的驱动电路A和B。
再有,分别包含上述逻辑电路的驱动电路A和B例如是3.3V的电压规格,上述稳压电路4将由太阳能电池单元E1~E4生成的直流输出变换成上述3.3V左右的稳定电压值,再供给到驱动电路A和B。
按照上述构成,即使由于外部光的原因导致太阳能电池单元E 1~E4的输出发生变动,通过上述稳压电路对输出电压的控制作用,也可以保证数据驱动器2和扫描驱动器3中的驱动电路A和B稳定工作。
再有,当上述太阳能电池单元E1~E4的输出电压降低,不能对上述稳压电路4的输出电压进行稳压控制时(当稳压电路4的输出电压下降到不能使上述逻辑电路工作的电压值时),停止(切断)稳压电路4的输出。
另一方面,在图1所示的实施方式中,上述太阳能电池单元E1~E4的输出不通过上述稳压电路4,而是用作有机EL元件的驱动电源。即,上述太阳能电池单元的输出通过数据驱动器2中的上述开关元件TS 1、TS2中的某一开关元件和阳极线向处于扫描状态的有机EL元件供给。
此外,上述太阳能电池单元的输出通过扫描驱动器3中的上述开关元件TS3、TS4中的某一开关元件和扫描未选中的阴极线向有机EL元件供给,并作为反向偏置电压。由此,可以防止无源矩阵型显示面板发生的串扰发光(crosstalk emission)。
众所周知,作为上述自发光元件的有机EL元件,具有发光亮度与阳极电压对应变化的特性。因此,根据利用太阳能电池单元的输出作为驱动电源的上述结构,有机EL元件的发光亮度也同样相应于太阳能电池单元所接收的外部光的大小而变化。即,进行显示面板1的整体亮度相应于外部光而变化的调光控制。
因此,由于相应于外部光对显示面板1进行调光控制,故能够提高其清晰度。此外,驱动显示面板1的数据驱动器2和扫描驱动器3在能够将上述稳压电路4的输出电压控制值控制在规定值内的范围内可以保证稳定工作。
图2示出了本发明的显示装置的第2实施方式,在该图2中,对于和已说明的图1所示的各部分相当的部分用同一符号表示。因此,省略其详细说明。
在本实施方式中,上述光电元件,即太阳能电池单元E 1~E4的输出经由用符号5表示的升压电路(DC-DC变换器),作为配置在显示面板1的有机EL元件的驱动电源,向显示面板1供给。
再有,在本实施方式中,上述升压电路5适合使用例如充电泵,也可以根据所适用的设备,采用使用了线圈的电磁变换装置的升压电路。
根据该第2实施方式,即使在太阳能电池单元E 1~E4的电动势不足的状态下,也可以驱动显示面板1发光。而且,升压电路5使用上述充电泵等电路,由此,根据外部光对显示面板1进行调光控制,故能够提高其清晰度,如此等等,能够得到和图1所示的第1实施方式同样的效果。
图3示出了本发明的显示装置的第3实施方式,在该图3中,对于和已说明的图1所示的各部分相当的部分用同一符号表示。因此,省略其详细说明。
在该实施方式中,将作为光电元件的由串联连接体构成的太阳能电池单元E 1~E4中的一部分、即由E1~E3表示的太阳能电池单元的输出供给到上述稳压电路4,并作为驱动电源从该稳压电路4向由符号2a和2b表示的驱动电路A和B供给。
而且,由E 1~E4的串联连接体构成的太阳能电池单元的输出作为驱动电源供给到作为显示面板1中的自发光元件的有机EL元件。
按照上述构成,当向包含以较低电压驱动的逻辑电路的驱动电路A和B施加额定电压时,能够减少稳压电路4中的电压降,故能够提高太阳能电池单元的电力的利用效率。而且,图3所示的实施方式也可以得到和实施方式1同样的效果。
其次,图4示出了本发明的显示装置的第4实施方式,在该图4所示的例子中,将有机EL元件作为自发光元件,构成有源矩阵型显示面板1。再有,在该图4中,对于和已说明的图1所示的各部分相当的部分用同一符号表示。因此,适当省略其详细说明。
再有,对于图4中的显示面板1,示出构成1个像素的最基本的像素电路。而且,因纸面的关系,上述像素电路示出了3行2列,但实际上,多个像素电路在显示面板1的整个面沿纵横方向呈矩阵状排列。
在图4中,如对1个像素电路添加的符号所示,各像素电路由数据写入晶体管T1、驱动晶体管T2、电荷保持用电容器Cs、有机EL元件EL构成。而且,从数据驱动器2向数据写入晶体管T1的源极供给与图像信号对应的数据信号,此外,从扫描驱动器3向数据写入晶体管T1的栅极供给写入脉冲。
上述数据写入晶体管T1的漏极与上述驱动晶体管T2的栅极连接,并与电荷保持用电容器Cs的一个端子连接。而且,上述驱动晶体管T2的源极与上述电荷保持用电容器Cs的另一个端子连接,同时,太阳能电池单元E1~E4的输出作为驱动电源供给。
此外,上述驱动晶体管T2的漏极与作为自发光元件的有机EL元件EL的阳极端子连接,该有机EL元件EL的阴极端子与显示面板1的基准电位点(GND)连接。
另一方面,在图4所示的实施方式中,作为E1~E4所示的光电元件的太阳能电池单元的直流输出经限制输出电压值的稳压电路(调压器)4被作为驱动电源供给到数据驱动器2和扫描驱动器3。
根据上述构成,即使太阳能电池单元E1~E4的输出随外部光变动,在通过上述稳压电路4将电压控制在规定值的范围内,数据驱动器2和扫描驱动器3也可以保证稳定地工作。
而且,太阳能电池单元E1~E4的直流输出供给到显示面板1中的作为发光对象的像素电路。这时,如上所述,各像素电路构成了驱动用晶体管T2和有机EL元件的串联电路,故构成像素电路的有机E元件的发光亮度也同样与太阳能电池单元所接收的外部光的大小对应变化。即,进行显示面板的整体亮度随着外部光的变化而变化的调光控制。
因此,图4所示的有源矩阵型显示面板的显示装置可以得到和使用了图1~图3所示的无源矩阵型显示面板的例子同样的作用效果。
再有,有源矩阵型显示面板的显示装置当然不限于图4所示的例子,也可以使用该有源矩阵型显示面板来实现图2或图3所示的实施方式。
以上,根据已说明的显示装置,采用对薄膜层进行层叠而成的例如有机EL元件等作为显示面板,并将上述太阳能电池单元组合起来,作为向上述有机EL元件供给驱动电力的光电元件,由此,可以提供具有驱动电源的轻量薄型的显示装置。
Claims (10)
1.一种显示装置,其特征在于,
具有相应于外部光的照度输出电动势的光电元件、至少配置了1个自发光元件的发光装置、和用于驱动控制上述发光装置的驱动电路;
作为逻辑电路的驱动电源,通过限制上述光电元件的输出电压值的稳压电路向安装于上述驱动电路的逻辑电路供给,同时,作为自发光元件的驱动电源,不经过上述稳压电路从上述光电元件向上述自发光元件供给,上述自发光元件以与外部光的照度相对应的亮度发光。
2.权利要求1记载的显示装置,其特征在于,
上述光电元件的输出作为驱动电源,通过升压电路向上述自发光元件供给。
3.权利要求1或权利要求2记载的显示装置,其特征在于,
上述光电元件分别由起光电变换作用的单位元件的串联连接体构成,将上述串联连接体中的部分单位元件的输出作为驱动电源通过上述稳压电路向逻辑电路供给。
4.权利要求1或权利要求2记载的显示装置,其特征在于,
上述发光装置是在相互交叉的多个阳极线和多个阴极线的各交叉点上具有自发光元件的无源矩阵型发光显示面板,上述光电元件的输出作为自发光元件的驱动电源被有选择性地向上述无源矩阵型显示面板中的上述阳极线供给。
5.权利要求3记载的显示装置,其特征在于,
上述发光装置是在相互交叉的多个阳极线和多个阴极线的各交叉点上具有自发光元件的无源矩阵型发光显示面板,上述光电元件的输出作为自发光元件的驱动电源被有选择性地向上述无源矩阵型显示面板中的上述阳极线供给。
6.权利要求4记载的显示装置,其特征在于,
上述光电元件的输出作为反向偏置电源被有选择性地向上述无源矩阵型显示面板中的上述阴极线供给。
7.权利要求5记载的显示装置,其特征在于,
上述光电元件的输出作为反向偏置电源被有选择性地向上述无源矩阵型显示面板中的上述阴极线供给。
8.权利要求1或权利要求2记载的显示装置,其特征在于,
上述发光装置是在相互交叉的多个数据线和多个扫描线的各交叉点上具有像素的有源矩阵型发光显示面板,其中上述像素包含自发光元件和有源元件;
上述光电元件的输出作为自发光元件的驱动电源向构成像素的自发光元件和上述有源元件所组成的串联电路分别供给。
9.权利要求1或权利要求2记载的显示装置,其特征在于,
上述光电元件是太阳能电池单元。
10.权利要求4记载的显示装置,其特征在于,
上述光电元件是太阳能电池单元。
