The typewriter shown is of the type which has two characters imprinted on each character bar and in which the carriage. The paper is moved up or up to bring the second set of print characters into the use position. Its outer frame is in stamped sheet metal and consists of the side plates 1, 2, the front plate 3, the rear plate 4 and the middle vertical plate 5 fig. 1, 2 and 3).
Each of the side plates of the 1âti has, along its upper edge, a rim 6 turned one inside, in its rear part a rim 7 also turned in, riveted to the rear plate 4 and at the front a rim 8 also turned inwards, riveted to the front plate 3 the median plate 5 has the side ears 9 folded backwards and riveted to the side plates 1, 2. The frame is supported by elastic feet or tabs 10, 11, of which the front ones, 10, are fixed to a flange 12 of brackets 13 spun by a lug 14 to the middle plate 5. The rear legs 11 are fixed to a flange 15 curved inward at the part. lower the side plates of the frame.
Inside (each side plate of the frame is rigidly fixed, for example by rivets, a bracket 20 fig. 3 5 and 19 serving (the support for the key levers, a lifting mechanism, this paper cart and to the character bar segment 21. These brackets 20 with adjoining parts constituting the aforementioned inner frame. The opposite ends of the character bar segment 21 are attached to the upper edges 22 of the support brackets 20 and fit against each other. the inner faces of the side plates of the frame.
On the opposite sides of the machine there are two plates (the top 25. The front edge of these rests on the upper edge of the middle plate 5 and their side edge fits under the edge 6 of the side plate. corresponding, while their posterior edge rests on a flange 26 hi character bar segment and presents an ear 27 threaded to the latter by means of a screw, each top plate thus being held in place by means of a screw unique.
The paper carriage, its control and all the adjoining parts are carried by a base plate 30 arranged in the rear part of the machine fig. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7). This base plate is supported by two rods 31 each guided in a pair of ears 32 forming part of the support brackets 20. The base plate 30 is fixed to the rods 31 by means (the screw 33. On the lifting rods 31 the adjustable stop pieces 34, 35 are fitted.
In the support brackets 20 is pivoted a shaft 36 carrying, near each of its ends, an arm 37 forked at its free end to engage on a pin 38 provided at the lower end of the lifting rod. 31 correspondent.
The same shaft also carries two key levers (lifting 39, 40, one on each side (, (the machine. The weight of the paper carriage and (the adjoining parts is sufficient to keep the parts in the lower position for the machine. 'use of, play (the lower character, and this weight is partially counterbalanced by the effect of a spring 31 allowing to make said parts more easily rise to the position of use of,

On the button lever 40 is articulated a locking lever 42 (fig. l1), normally tilted in rear by the pressure of a spring 43 cl which has a support button i5 located immediately next to the button of the button lever 40. Above the fall lever 40 is a stop '44, and in the position normal working of the parts, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 11, the rear end of lever 42 is rearward and raised on stop 44.
If we lower the key lever reads the spring 43 holding the lever 42 back, this the lever is kept free from the stop 44. However, when we want to work with the set the upper characters, we press to the laws on the ladle 45 of the rocking lever 42 and on the key read lever the lifting 40, the pressure on the key 45 forcing The rear end of the lever 42 to engage under the stop 44 and to hold the lever the lifting 40 if the lowered position. To release the lifting lever 40, press in key without affecting key 45.
Immediately kills the bike pressure is sufficient to release the rear end of the lever 42 from the stop 44. the spring 43 swings the lever 42 from under the stop 4i and thus allows the lifting lever 40 to return to its normal position .
The support frame of the rental trolley fig. i to 7) comprises the base plate 30, the side cheeks or consoles 46, the posterior guide rod 47 and the anterior guide rod 48. The side brackets 46 are fixed to the base plate 30 by means of captive pins 19) and screw 50 end. 6 and 7) so that they can be removed with the rods (see guide. Follows for repairs or changes.
The paper roll holder frame fig. 8) comprises two side cheeks 52. 53. an anterior bar 54 and a posterior bar 55. The anterior bar 54 carries a roller .56 it rolls on the rod i3 forming the guide rail and a guard 57 intended to ensure this guidance. A sliding part 58 can slide on one side and on the other on the guide rod 47. It carries a tab 58 with pins or tenons 60 intended to engage clans the Irons he practiced in the Marre 55. The latter is provided with a threaded plug 62 which fits in an enlarged part lu truu 63 of the lug 58 and a screw 67 with knurled head i4 is screwed in this plug and in the tapped hole 63 to secure the monkfish 58 with the bar 55 the paper roller 65 is journaled in the side cheeks 5a 53.
A paper guile 70 for the introduction of the paper is fixed to the bar 55 of the rental roll holder frame. Two paper guide fingers 83 are carried by the bar 80, on which they can be moved laterally.
The character bars 110 (fig. 17 and 19) are swiveled on a 1 t l rod passing behind the character bar segment 21. The anterior ends of these bars rest, in their inactive position. on a cushion-filling 112 pre seen dars a support 113 is fixed to it at the rear of the median plate 5. The keys ries the fingerboard are Apodes in four rows or in tiers.
Each key 115) of the inner or rear row engages. by a neck connection - a notched common transvewale ball 116 and is articulated if 117 to the lever 118 pivoted on a shaft 119 and whose rear end is connected, by an intermediate connecting rod 120 to the corresponding character bar, this connection being carried out in two places, first with the aid of the tab 121 which normally abuts against the lower edge of the letter character bar and then with a pin and a notch at 122.
When all the buttons 115 is lowered, it lowers the front end of the corresponding lever 118 and lifts the rear end with the connecting rod 120. In the first I) part (tri movement, the latch i? .1 raises the bar at (character until. this (kills the movement lost in the.
connection o-1 pin and fi notch 122 is caught, after which the movement necessarily results in this pin. Since the cleat 121 is at a distance from the pivot 111, about twice as great as the pin of the connection 122, a much smaller force is required for starting (the movement of the character bar. In this way, one obtains , a very easy touch to control the character bar while allowing, thanks to the pin connection, the application of an intense force, for example for making several copies.
Each of the keys 123 of the second row, starting from the rear, is guided by a notched common bar 124 and is articulated at 125 by a lever 126 pivoted on a shaft 127 and whose rear end 42 is connected to the bar with a corresponding character by a connecting rod connection similar to that 120. The notched bars 1i6, 124 are carried by the lips 128 of calipers 129 connected to the side plates of the frame of the machine, (such as the notched bars can be adjusted to fix the position of the two posterior rows of keys 115, 125.
In their middle part, the bars 116, 124 are connected to each other by a coupling part 130 carried adjustably by a console 131 which is in turn fixed to the middle plate 5 so as to support the notched bars. between their ends. The two outer rows of keys are carried directly by the levers i32, 133 articulated respectively on the shafts 134, 135 and the posterior ends of which are respectively connected to their character bars by a connecting rod connection which revives that 120. It will be understood that the connecting rods 120 are (the lengths different, those located on the side being longer and bent to connect to their character bars.
Each character bar 110 has a protrusion 136 arranged to come to bear against a protrusion 137 at the front of the character bar segment in order to limit the stroke of the character bar. All the shafts 36, 119, 127, 134. 135 are journaled in the support brackets 20, being supported by a lower counterpart 138 fixed to the lower edge of these brackets.
Although due to the assembly described the movement of the character bars is very smooth and light, there are also guide rollers 140 (fig. 17) for the character bars just below the point of. printing, while the latter are for views of a heel 141 intended to be introduced gently between said rollers to ensure the guiding of the character bars at the time of printing and thereby obtain uniformity of printing position for all character bars. As in general, the character bars bounce.
of the paper roll, an i42 spring wand is provided above the rear end of the key levers to assist in returning the type bars and key levers.
The paper carriage is normally pulled to the left by a spring barrel 115 and a cable 146 (Figs. 9, 12, 13, 14). This barrel is carried by a bearing 147 fixed to the underside of the base plate 30 which can move vertically with the paper cart. The latter includes a mesh ring 148 which, for ease of release, is carried, (so as to be able to wink, by arms 149 (fig. 1 and 2 pivoted on bar 80, a spring (not shown) being arranged to keep the rack in the active position The escape lever 152 is pivoted in consoles 153 (fig. 1 @ fixed to the underside of the plate (the base 30. This lever is normally biased by a torsion spring 154 which tends to push it back.
It has two pawls 155, 157 arranged to be engaged alternately. in front of the successive teeth of the rack 148.
The pawl 1.5; ï is pivoted to the lever 1.52 (by means of a screw i, 56 and is normally taken with the rack when the mechanism is at rest <B>.
- </B> The IM ratchet is rigidly fixed to the lever 152 by a 1.58 screw. When the upper end of the lever 1.52 swings forward, the pawl i @@ a is withdrawn from the rack 1st 148 and the pawl 1.37 is brought into the engaged position.
The pawl 155 is then oscillated to the right by the loigt res exits 179 (bears it against the shoulder 160 below the pivot (you click. A similar spring finger 161 rests against the pawl 155 above (the pivot out (the way to constitute an elastic stop, (the so that the upper end of the pawl will be kept in position to be engaged before the next slow one (the bed rack when the upper end of the lever swings backwards). The spring finger 161 being established (the way to be able to yield. The cart can be moved to the right at any time its rack simply sliding on the point of the pawl 155.
The two spring fingers 159, 16f are preferably stamped (one piece (the metal so as to take their correct relative position during (the assembly.
The universal bar 165 is mounted on a rear called segment 2t with character arms and is supported by a suspension member 166 pivoted on the pegs 167 (FIG. 9). It is guided by two pins 168 which engage in ears 169 (the organ (the suspension. A spring 170 normally pulls the unisversal bar towards the character bar segment. Each character bar has a shoulder. 171 arranged to engage with the universal bar as the character bar approaches the print position. The forked lower end 172 of the lever 152 straddles a transverse piece 173 of the organ (the Sus board 166 the the universal bar comes out due, each time the latter oscillates.
the lever 152 will participate in this oscillating movement, whether the carriage is in its upper position or in its lower position.
The spacer bar 175 (Figs. 15 and 17) is carried by an overturned bucket part 176, the front wall of which is outside the front plate 3 hp machine frame. An ear 177 provided at the rear of this plate serves (the guard for said bar. The ends of the rear wall (the trough piece 176 are bent backwards at 178 and connected to the arms 179. These ends) the latter are articulated on the extremities (the shaft l27 and their ends rise upwards and are articulated at 180 to the guide rods 151. These rods are notched to allow them to engage on the shaft 127, as shown in Fig. 15. The (posterior xtremities of the connecting rods 481 are connected to arms 182 pivoted in 1S3.
A transverse shaft 18s placed at the rear (the machine carries arms 155 connected by connecting rods 186 to the arms 182. This shaft 184 is pivoted in brackets 187 (fig. 3) fixed to the consoles (the support 20 The tubs 188 (fig. 17) is mounted on the shaft 184 in the middle part of the latter and has a notch for receiving the hook 189 provided at the rear part of the universal bar 165.
Lowering the spacer bar 175 oscillates the arms 179 on the shaft 127, moves the hinge pin 180 forward by pulling the connecting rod P upstream, and finally produces an oscillating motion on the shaft. shaft 184 clockwise (one shows the way to swing arm 188 backwards and move the universal bar and the exhaust lever accordingly. Springs 190 are used for return the space bar and the adjoining parts to the normal position (the re pos.
As above, the paper carriage is normally stopped by the escape mechanism against the force (read traction of the motor barrel. As it is often desirable to move the paper carriage backwards (one or more spaces). , here there is a special ladle control device intended for this purpose.
A slider 195 (fig. 2, 9. 10 and 15) is supported on the base plate: <B> 30 </B> and. N uiclé SLIP the latter by means (the two screws 196, being pulled towards: the left by the action (the one spring 97. The pawl <B> 198 </B> carried by this slider is: normally rnaintenci lowered by a stop 199 rising Under the tail of the clicks.
As the slider with the pawl are pulled to the right, a torsion spring 200 lifts the pawl tooth to prie it with the rack 148 as soon as the pawl shank disengages from the stop 199. The movement of the pawl The slide continuing to the right drives the rack 143 and with it the panic trolley so that the teeth of the rack will slide on the releasing pawl 155 of the escape lever. The shoulder 201 at the rear of the pawl 193 acts as a stopper to limit the upward movement of the right end of the pawl. A pin 202 restricts the sliding movement of the slider to the right.
The rear spacer is actuated by means of a key 203 which passes through the anterior part of the plate (the top (the right 25 (fig. I) and whose lower end is guided by screws. 204 at the rear is the middle plate 5 (fig. 15). This and the rear plate serve (the support for an oscillating shaft 205 carrying, on the one hand, an arm 206 connected by a pin and notch connection to key 203 and on the other hand, our arm 207 connected by a connecting rod 208 to a tail 209 of the slider 195.
It can be seen (in fig. 9 that the lowering of the key 203 rotates the shaft 205 in the direction of clockwise movement and produces the displacement of the slide 195 to the right and due, when the button is released, the spring 19i returns the parts to their normal position (rest.
The anterior edge (the base plate 30 carries a protruding feeder finger 212 (fig. 6 which sest (the bectée for a margin stop 213 forged at the lower part of the paper guide finger 3 c the left (fig. . 1.), when the paper carriage is moved to the right.
In order to avoid the accumulation of letters or printing signs at the end of a line, the machine is provided with an automatic locking device. A lever 220 (Fig. 18) pivoted to the rear of the character bar segment is normally biased by a spring 221. which holds it against a stop 222.
The lower end of this lever is arranged to engage behind the shoulder 223 of the universal bar 165, while its upper end 224 projects normally into the path of the marginal stop 214, provided at the lower end of the finger (the guide of the paper 83 on the right, so that when the carriage moves from right to left, the stop 214 engages with the upper end 224 of the lever 220 and switches the latter to the left looking at the machine from the front, or to the right in the view in Fig. 18, which will cause the lower end of the lever to be engaged behind the shoulder 223 of the universal bar.
This stops the operation (the universal bar and therefore prevents the character bars from moving to the point of printing and thus terminates the end (the line being written.
As it is sometimes desirable to write a few more letters at the end of a line of determined length, the machine is looking for means making it possible to release the positive locking device which has just been described. The upper part 224 of the lever (the rusting worm 220 is articulated at 225 on the body of the lever and is normally pressed back by a spring 226. A shaft 227 (fig. 3 and <B> 18) </B> is pivoted in bearings 228 and carries a finger 229 which engages behind part 224 of lever 220.
A key 230 is connected to a lever 231 pivoted in 232 clans the rear part of the machine and. connected by a connecting rod 233 to an arm 234. of the shaft? 27. A spring <B> 2 </B> 35 holds the parts elastically in; their normal position.
The lowering (the key? .30 lowers the lever 231 and moves the finger <B> 2 </B> 29 forward so as to. Bring the. Part 224 of the locking lever 220 forward out of the. path to stop 2111 (read paper carriage (fig. 18 @. Spring 221 immediately withdraws part 224 to the right (looking at the machine from the front).
The paper carriage is then free to move further towards the _-aucbe. to give a warning signal, when the paper carriage is about to reach the normal end of its working stroke, there is a stamp 2i0 fig. p and a hammer 242 on the underside of the base plate 30r this hammer striking the gong when the carriage reaches the end (its stroke (the work.
When it is desired to move the carriage from right to left for purposes arise in the table, the escape lever normally used is put into play by actuating a button 250 (fig. 1 and 15). . The lower end (the this key is articulated at the anterior end ch lever o51 rotated though 252 and supported normally by a spring 253.
This lever has a forked arm 254 at its upper end to engage with the pin 255 at the lower end of the arm 256 (fig. T6), the latter is fixed to a bar 2a7 (fig. 2 'and 16). - Lonnée in the cheeks of carriage 45 (Fig. 7) and the middle part of which carries a tab 25s with protruding fingers, one swallows your exhaust pawls on either side. When the button 250 is lowered. it causes the lever 251 to oscillate the arm 251 forward, so as to turn the bar 257 sufficiently and in the proper direction to raise ver the rack 14n (when engaged with the escape pawls.
The paper carriage is then free to move to the left (looking at the machine from the front) under the action of the motor barrel, except that it is delayed by the friction between the tab <B> 258 </B> and the rack 148. To stop the paper cart at the desired point, tn stop (the mix sorting is used, or there may be several of these stops, when it is desired to provide for a tabulation by several settlers. nes.
The tabbing stop has a protruding finger body 261 and the jaws 262 engaging the ticked bar 257 (fin. 9). The sliding part 58 which slides on the guide rod 47 (fig. 7), driven by the paper carriage, has a lower projection 265 arranged to engage with the finger 261 of said stop when the ladle places a table. is lowered and the array bar 257 with said stop will be caused to oscillate backward through the path of the projection 265 to thereby stop the drive at the position determined by said stop.

Each of these coils is supported by its vertical shaft 272 which can rotate without firing support 273 carried by the corresponding top plate 25. It is combined with an arm 274, 275 (fig. HERE and h8) mounted on a part 276 supported by a support 277 on said top plate 25. The arm 2i l engages on the upper end (the l ' spool holder shaft 272 to keep the babble there, while the lower arm 275 presses against this shaft and serves as a stop and brake to exert urge retarding friction on the shaft and the spool.
Nearby (at the point of printing, the ink ribbon is guided by a frame 230 (fig. 18) is supported by an oscillator 281. Normally, the oscillator keeps the frame and the ink ribbon at the bottom below the printing bulb so that the writing line is visible. On the plate (the base 30 of the pallet to be fixed is suspended a bracket 282 (fig. 9 and 17) having an arm 283 protruding from the front, from which is articulated rte elbow lever 284 The horizontal arm thereof is connected to the lower end of oscillator 281.
while its rising arm is connected to the universal bar 165 (the door is tied when the latter is moved rearward by the action of either or the other character bar. the arm 188 is brought to swing back , push back the rod 285 and with it the rising arm of the angled lever 'Sl to raise the oscillator 281 and the guide frame 280 with the ink ribbon facing the printing point. At the time of the lifting of the carriage, the action of the universal bar being suspended, it collects that as the angled lever 284 is driven in a substantially vertical upward movement and as its connection with the connecting rod 285 also moves substantially vertically, the arm horizontal lever and oscillator 281 will also move vertically to lift the ink ribbon by an amount corresponding to the lift stroke of the paper carriage.
At the lower end of each spool holder shaft is mounted a ratchet wheel 290 of the control (fig. 70, 15 and 17), with which cooperates an advancing pawl 292 connected to a shaft 291 of the shaft. 181 and provided with a slot by which it is guided on a pin 293. This pawl is pressed against its seal wheel by a spring 294 mounted on the pin 293 and has a (slow spring 296 to engage with the den the ratchet wheel is actuated, so that when the universal bar is actuated and the shaft 184 is caused to oscillate, as described above, the arm 291 oscillates and forces the ratchet to advance the ratchet wheel.
