Typewriter The present invention relates to a typewriter comprising a carriage carrying a cylinder and a segment carrying character bars, at least one of the latter being provided with three characters spaced longitudinally with respect to the bar.
Such machines have been known for a long time. The introduction of three character bars was dictated by the desire to reduce the number of bars in a machine and, therefore, the size and weight of the machine. To allow each of the three characters to be typed at the same right of the cylinder, known machines include one of the three organs, namely the segment, the carriage or the cylinder, movable in height so as to be able to occupy three different positions. Now, one of the three positions that said member must occupy, in particular the middle position, does not have sufficient stability, a fixed stop not being able to be used as for the two extreme positions.
This is obviously a drawback which, together with that arising from the difficulty which the construction presents to obtain such a large displacement of the member in question, is probably at the origin of the abandonment of the manufacture of such machines.
However, the use of bars with three characters in current machines would be very advantageous given the use, always more frequent in writing, of a quantity of conventional signs.
The machine according to the invention aims to eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks and differs from known machines by the fact that said carriage and said segment are movable in height, each by a distance substantially equal to the distance separating two neighboring characters of the same bar. The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, some variants of the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, partially in section, a side view of the machine.
Fig. 2 represents the cylinder and a character bar in the different positions of their operation.
Figs. 3 and 4 are similar to FIG. 2 and represent two variants.
In fig. 1 are shown only the parts of the machine of interest to the invention. The machine comprises, in a known manner, a carriage 1. movable horizontally on a pair of rails 2 and 3 and carrying a cylinder 4. The carriage is carried by a support 5 articulated at 6 and 7 at the end of two arms 8a and 9a of two levers 8, respectively 9, with two arms, pivoted, respectively at 10 and 11 on the frame 12 of the machine.
A spring 13 attached to the other arm 8b of the lever 8 tends to make the latter turn senestrorsum and, consequently, to maintain the support 5, the carriage 1 and the cylinder 4, in their position shown in FIG. 1, position determined by the support of the support 5 against a stop 14.
The second arm 9b of the lever 9 is connected, by means of a pull tab 15, to one of the ends of a key lever 16, the other end of the latter carrying a key 17.
It is easy to see that an action on the button 17, causing the lowering of this one and the pivoting of the lever 16, will result in a dextrorsum rotation of the lever 9 and the lowering of the support 5, of the carriage 1. and of the cylinder 4 in their lower position determined by the support of the support 5 against a stop 18.
On the other hand, the machine comprises, in a known manner, a segment 19 intended to carry character bars. As can be seen in the drawing, the character bar 20 is pivoted at 21 and connected by a pull tab 22 to the corresponding controls not shown in the drawing. It has three characters 23, 24 and 25. The segment 19 is articulated at 26 and 27 at the end of two arms 28a and 29a of two levers 28, respectively 29, with two arms, respectively pivoted at 30 and 31 on the frame 12.
A spring 32 attached to the other arm 28b of the lever 28 tends to make the latter turn senestrorsum and, consequently, to maintain the segment 19 in the position shown in FIG. 1, position determined by pressing segment 19 against a stop 33.
The second arm 29b of the lever 29 is connected, via a pull tab 34, to one end of a key lever 35, the other end of the latter carrying a key 36.
As can be seen, the operating mechanism of the segment 19 is identical to that of the carriage 1. Consequently, the lowering of the key 36 will cause a displacement in height of the segment 19 towards its lower position determined by a stop 37.
The machine described therefore comprises, unlike the known machines, both the carriage 1 and the segment 19 movable in height, with a distance corresponding to the distance separating two neighboring characters of the bar 20. FIG. 2, representing the cylinder 4 and the character bar 20 in the different positions of their operation, shows how the three characters 23, 24 and 25 of the bar 20 are struck the same in the right of cylinder 4.
The position of cylinder 4 and of bar 20 shown on the left of FIG. 2 corresponds to that of FIG. 1. None of the keys 17 and 36 being lowered, the typing effect will be that of the character 24. When the key 36 is lowered, the bar 20 will occupy the position shown in the middle in FIG. 2, the cylinder being in the same position as before, so that the strike performed will be that of character 23.
When, on the other hand, it is the key 17 which * is lowered, the cylinder 4 occupies the position shown on the right in FIG. 2, the bar 20 remaining in the position shown in FIG. 1, so that the keystroke performed will be that of character 25.
As can be seen from the foregoing, the machine described above allows the use of bars with three characters, without having any of the drawbacks of known machines. In fact, the height displacement of the carriage and of the segment does not exceed that currently used in typewriters, the two operating positions of both being stable and well determined. It goes without saying that the means controlling the height displacement of the carriage and of the segment could be provided in any manner other than that described as an example.
On the other hand, in a variant, these means could be provided so that an action on the key 17 respectively 36, causes a displacement of the carriage 1, respectively of the segment 19, from bottom to top, the normal position (from rest) of the carriage and of the segment being the lower position determined by the stops 18 and 37.
The different operating positions of cylinder 4 and of bar 20 of such a variant are shown in FIG. 3: none of the keys is down, character 24 is hit (left), key 36 down, character 25 is hit (middle), key 17 down, character 23 is hit (right ).
Fig. 4 shows the different operating positions of cylinder 4 and of bar 20 of another variant in which the normal position of the carriage is its lower position, while the normal position of the segment is in its upper position. Thus the typing of the character 25 is obtained when none of the keys is lowered (on the left), the typing of the character 24 by the lowering of the key 36 (in the middle) and the typing of the character 23 by the lowering of both. buttons 17 and 36 (right.) In the above description, it is always a question of movements in height of the carriage 1, respectively of the segment 19.
However, it is understood that by displacement in height is meant both a strictly vertical displacement and an oblique displacement, as is precisely the case in the example shown in FIG. 1. In fact, the direction in which these movements are made depends essentially on the basic construction of the typewriter to which the above-written arrangement is applied. For example, in the case of some portable typewriters of low and flat construction, the character bars are almost horizontal when typed on cylinder 4.
In such a case, the component of the displacement in the vertical direction will therefore be very small, the component of the displacement in the horizontal direction being greater. However, the expression displacement e in height can always be understood in relation to the sheet of paper on which the strike is made.
