Description
Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein Verfahren zur nicht-reduktiven Dehalogenierung von mit Wasser nicht mischbaren oder in Wasser schwach löslichen aromatischen und hetereoaro-matischen Verbindungen, die als Kernsubstituenten mindestens ein Chlor- oder Bromatom enthalten, unter Verknüpfung der chlor- oder bromsubstituierten Kerne in den vorher durch die Chlor- oder Bromatome eingenommenen Stellungen. Das Verfahren ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man zu einer solchen Verbindung in Gegenwart eines Hydrierungskatalysators und eines oberflächenaktiven Mittels unter stark alkalischen Bedingungen in Wasser 1 bis 3 Moläquivalente Ameisensäuresalz in Portionen zusetzt.
Mit dem Ausdruck «oberflächenaktives Mittel» ist ein beliebiger Stoff gemeint, der, wenn er in Wasser gelöst ist, dessen Oberflächenenergie herabsetzt. Beispiele hierfür sind anionische oberflächenaktive Mittel, wie z.B. wasserlösliche Salze (beispielsweise Natriumsalze) von langkettigen Carbonsäuren oder Schwefelsäureester, kationische oberflächenaktive Mittel, wie z.B. quaternäre Ammoniumsalze von langkettigen Aminen, und nicht-ionische oberflächenaktive Mittel, wie z.B. Polyalkenoxyderivate von Phenolen und Aminen. Der Ausdruck «oberflächenaktives Mittel» umfasst diejenigen Stoffe, für welche üblicherweise die Ausdrücke «Detergens» und «Netzmittel» verwendet werden. Anionische oberflächenaktive Mittel, wie z.B. Natriumdiisopropylnaphthalinsulfate, sind besonders brauchbar.
Es ist erwünscht, aber nicht unbedingt erforderlich, dass das oberflächenaktive Mittel ein Phasenübertragungskatalysator ist. Hierunter ist ein Stoff zu verstehen, der Reaktionen dadurch fördert, dass er einen Reaktionsteilnehmer aus einer wässrigen Phase in eine nicht-wässrige Phase überführt, wo dieser eine Reaktion eingeht, wobei der Phasenübertragungskatalysator wieder in Freiheit gesetzt wird und wieder für eine erneute Verwendung in die wässrige Phase zurückkehren kann. Phasenübertragungskatalysatoren sind beispielsweise näher in der GB-PS 1 227 144 beschrieben. Beim vorliegenden Verfahren wird als Phasenübertragungskatalysator vorzugsweise ein quaternäres Ammonium- oder Phosphoniumsalz verwendet, das der Formel:

worin Ri, R2, R3 und R4, die gleich oder verschieden sein können, Ci-Ci6-Alkyl-, Aryl-, Aralkyl-, Ci- bis Ci6-Hydro-xyalkyl- oder Cz- bis C32-Alkoxyalkylreste bedeuten und X~ ein Äquivalent eines der Ionen F~, CI", Br~, OH", SO42", HSO4", SO32- oder HSO3- darstellt.
Beispiele für mit Wasser nicht mischbare oder in Wasser schwach lösliche aromatische oder heteroaromatische Verbindungen, die als Kernsubstituenten mindestens ein Chlor- oder Bromatom enthalten, sind Chlorbenzol, Brombenzol, 1-Chlor-2-nitrobenzol, 5-Chlor-2-aminobenzotrifluorid, 2,5-Dichlorni-trobenzol, 2-Chlorpyridin, 4-Chlorpyridin, 4-Brom-2,6-dime-thylanilin, 1-Chlornaphthalin, 1,2-Dichlorbenzol, 4-Brombi-phenyl und 2,6-Difluor-4-bromanilin.
Neben Chlor- und/oder Bromatomen können die aromatischen und heteroaromatischen Verbindungen als zusätzliche Substituenten beispielsweise Alkyl, Aryl, Aralkyl, Amino, Alkylarylamino, Nitro, Carbonsäureester, Sulfon, Hydroxy, Alkoxy, Cyano, Sulfonamid, Carbonamid oder Fluor enthalten.
Das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren kann zur Entfernung von Chlor- oder Bromatomen ohne Entfernung von Fluoratomen angewandt werden.
Das Ameisensäuresalz ist vorzugsweise ein Alkalimetallsalz. Es kann als wässrige Lösung verwendet werden, die vorzugsweise gesättigt ist. Der pH-Wert des Reduktionsmediums kann nach Bedarf durch Zugabe von Säure, vorzugsweise Ameisensäure, oder eines Alkalis, beispielsweise Natriumhydroxid oder -carbonat, eingestellt werden.
Die Hydrierungskatalysatoren sind vorzugsweise solche auf Basis von Nickel, Palladium, Platin oder Ruthenium. Vorzüg-

liehe Resultate werden bei Verwendung von Palladium auf Kohlenstoff erhalten.
Die Reaktion wird zweckmässig bei Temperaturen bis zu 150°C ausgeführt. Wenn bei Atmosphärendruck gearbeitet wird, dann eignen sich Temperaturen von 75 bis 110°C, wobei der Temperaturbereich von 85 bis 102°C üblicherweise bevorzugt wird. In den Fällen, in denen die Verbindung, welche dehalogeniert werden soll, bei der gewünschten Reaktionstemperatur fest ist, muss ein Lösungsmittel, das bei den Reaktionsbedingungen inert ist und in dem die Verbindung löslich ist, wie z.B. Toluol oder Xylol, zugegeben werden, um eine zweite flüssige Phase zu schaffen.
Gegebenenfalls kann die Reaktion in Gegenwart eines inerten Gases, wie z.B. Stickstoff, ausgeführt werden.
Durch die nicht-reduktive Dehalogenierung werden zwei oder mehr aromatische oder heteroaromatische Kerne durch Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindungen an den Stellen, die vorher durch Kernchlor- oder Kernbromatome eingenommen worden sind, verknüpft. Beispielsweise kann aus Monochlor- oder Monobrombenzol Diphenyl erhalten werden. Dies erfolgt, wie gesagt bei Zugabe von 1 bis 3 Moläquivalenten Ameisensäuresalz pro als Kernsubstituent vorliegendes Chlor- oder Bromatom unter stark alkalischen Bedingungen.
Wenn reduzierbare Gruppen, wie z.B. Nitrogruppen, gemeinsam mit Halogenatomen vorliegen, dann können sie während der Reaktion reduziert werden.
Das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren eignet sich besonders zur Herstellung von Farbstoffzwischenprodukten.
Die Erfindung wird durch die folgenden Beispiele näher erläutert, worin die Teile Gewichtsteile sind.
Beispiel 1
15,7 Teile Brombenzol, 4,0 Teile Cetyltrimethylammonium-bromid, 2,0 Teile einer 50%igen Paste von 3%igem Palladium auf Kohlenstoff, 6,8 Teile Natriumformiat und 27 Teile einer 32%igen Natriumhydroxidlösung werden in 60 Teilen Wasser 4 Stunden lang zum Rückfluss erhitzt und gerührt. Dann werden 6,8 Teile Natriumformiat zugegeben, worauf das Gemisch weitere 18 Stunden unter Rückfluss gehalten wird. Das Gemisch wird dann der Wasserdampfdestillation unterworfen. Das Wasserdampfdestillat wird dreimal mit je 50 Teilen Chloroform extrahiert und der Extrakt dann über wasserfreiem Magnesiumsulfat getrocknet. Nach dem Abfiltrieren des Trocknungsmittels wird das Lösungsmittel im Vakuum entfernt, wobei 5,1 Teile Biphenyl erhalten werden (66,2%).
Beispiel 2
11,3 Teile Chlorbenzol werden unter Anwendung der gleichen Bedingungen und Mengen wie in Beispiel 1 reduziert, wobei 3,7 Teile Biphenyl erhalten werden (48,1%).
Beispiel 3
22,7 Teile 2-Chlorpyridin, 8,0 Teile Benzyltriäthylammoni-umchlorid, 4,0 Teile einer 50%igen Paste von 3%igem Palladium auf Kohlenstoff, 20,4 Teile Natriumformiat und 27 Teile einer 32%igen Natriumhydroxidlösung werden in 60 Teilen Wasser 4 Stunden lang zum Rückfluss erhitzt und gerührt. Dann werden 6,8 Teile Natriumformiat zu diesem Gemisch zugegeben, das weitere 24 Stunden lang unter Rückfluss gehalten wird. Das Reaktionsgemisch wird abgekühlt und schliesslich filtriert. Der Rückstand wird mit 75 Teilen Äther gewaschen und das Filtrat mit zweimal 70 Teilen Äther extrahiert. Die vereinigten Ätherextrakte werden über wasserfreiem Magnesiumsulfat getrocknet. Nach Entfernung des Trocknungsmittels wird der Äther abdestilliert. Der Rückstand wird im Vakuum destilliert, und die bei 150 bis 154°C/20 mm siedende Fraktion wird gesammelt, wobei 8,1 Teile 2,2'-Bipy-ridyl erhalten werden (51,9%).
Beispiel 4
11,35 Teile 4-Chlorpyridin, 2,0 Teile Benzyltriäthylammo-niumchlorid, 13,5 Teile einer 32%igen Natriumhydroxidlösung, 2,0 Teile einer 50%igen Paste von 3%igem Palladium auf Kohlenstoff und 10,2 Teile Natriumformiat werden in 30 Teilen Wasser 4 Stunden lang unter Rückfluss erhitzt und gerührt. 3,4 Teile Natriumformiat werden dann zu dem Gemisch zugegeben, das weitere 24 Stunden am Sieden gehalten wird. Das Reaktionsgemisch wird abgekühlt und dann filtriert. Der Rückstand wird 6 Stunden lang kontinuierlich mit 100 Teilen heissem Methanol extrahiert. Wenn der Extrakt zur Trockne eingedampft wird, dann werden 3,6 Teile 4,4'-Bipyri-dyl erhalten (46,2%).
Beispiel 5
24,0 Teile 4-Brom-2,6-dimethylanilin, 2,0 Teile einer 50%igen Paste von 3%igem Palladium auf Kohlenstoff, 4,0 Teile Cetyltrimethylammoniumbromid, 13,5 Teile 32%ige Natriumhydroxidlösung und 6,8 Teile Natriumformiat werden in 60 Teilen Wasser 3 Stunden lang zum Rückfluss erhitzt und gerührt. Dann werden 6,8 Teile Natriumformiat zugegeben, worauf das Gemisch 3 Stunden lang zum Sieden erhitzt wird, wonach eine weitere Charge von 6,8 Teilen Natriumformiat zugesetzt wird. Das Reaktionsgemisch wird dann weitere 23 Stunden lang zum Rückfluss erhitzt. Das Gemisch wird der Wasserdampfdestillation unterworfen, und aus dem Destillat werden durch Extraktion mit Äther 2,2 Teile 2,6-Dimethylani-lin (18,2%) gewonnen. Das Reaktionsgemisch wird nach der Wasserdampfdestillation auf Raumtemperatur abgekühlt und schliesslich filtriert. Der Rückstand wird 5 Stunden lang kontinuierlich mit 60 Teilen Methanol extrahiert, und hierauf wird der Extrakt abgekühlt. Der farblose kristalline Niederschlag wird abfiltriert und getrocknet, wobei 7,7 Teile (63,3%) 3,3',5,5'-Tetramethylbenzidin erhalten werden.
Beispiel 6
18,7 Teile 4-Bromanisol, 6,8 Teile Natriumformiat, 64 Teile einer 32%igen Natriumhydroxidlösung, 60 Teile Wasser, 4 Teile Cetyltrimethylammoniumbromid und 2 Teile einer 62%igen Paste von 3%igem Palladium auf Kohlenstoff werden 4 Stunden lang zum Rückfluss erhitzt und gerührt. Dann werden weitere 6,8 Teile Natriumformiat zugegeben, und das Rühren und das Erhitzen wird weitere 18 Stunden fortgesetzt. Dann wird Wasserdampf durch das Reaktionsgemisch hindurchgeleitet, um Anisol zu entfernen, worauf das Gemisch abgekühlt und filtriert wird. Der Filterkuchen wird mit Wasser gewaschen, bei 60°C getrocknet und mit 200 Teilen Chloroform extrahiert. Der Palladiumkatalysator wird durch Filtration des Chloroformextrakts zurückgewonnen, und das Chloroform wird dann im Vakuum abdestilliert. Der weisse feste Rückstand wird mit 500 Teilen kaltem Wasser verrieben,
durch Filtration gesammelt und bei 60°C getrocknet. Es werden 5,2 Teile 4,4'-Dimethoxybiphenyl mit einem Fp von 172 bis 173°C erhalten.
Beispiel 7
Beispiel 6 wird wiederholt, ausser dass die 18,7 Teile 4-Bromanisol durch 12,7 Teile p-Chlortoluol ersetzt werden. Es werden 5,0 Teile 4,4'-Dimethylbiphenyl mit einem Fp von 118 bis 121°C erhalten.
Beispiel 8
Beispiel 6 wird wiederholt, ausser dass die 18,7 Teile 4-Bromanisol durch 12,7 Teile m-Chlortoluol ersetzt werden. In diesem Fall ist das Produkt mit Wasserdampf etwas flüchtig, weshalb es weitgehend aus dem Wasserdampfdestillat gewonnen wird. Es werden 3,2 Teile 3,3'-Dimethylbiphenyl als farbloses Öl erhalten.

Beispiel 9
Dieses Beispiel erläutert die Verwendung eines Phosphoni-umsalzes als Phasenübertragungskatalysator.
Beispiel 1 wird wiederholt, ausser dass die 4 Teile Cetyltrimethylammoniumbromid durch 4,0 Teile Cetyltributylphos-phoniumbromid ersetzt werden, dass 64 Teile der 32%igen Natriumhydroxidlösung verwendet werden und dass die 60 Teile Wasser weggelassen werden. Es werden 4,62 Teile Biphenyl erhalten.
Beispiel 10
Beispiel 1 wird wiederholt, ausser dass 64 Teile 32%ige Natriumhydroxidlösung verwendet werden. Es werden 5,36 Teile Biphenyl mit einem Fp von 66 bis 68°C erhalten (96,6% Ausbeute).
Beispiel 11
Die Reaktion wird wie in Beispiel 6 ausgeführt, ausser dass die 18,7 Teile 4-Bromanisol durch 23,3 Teile 4-Brombiphenyl ersetzt werden und dass 110 Teile Xylol als Lösungsmittel zugegeben werden. Nach dem Erhitzen zum Rückfluss wird das Reaktionsgemisch nicht der Wasserdampfdestillation unterworfen, sondern abgekühlt, und ausserdem werden die vorhandenen Feststoffe durch Filtration gesammelt und auf dem Filter mit Wasser und mit 200 Teilen Toluol gewaschen. Der Filterkuchen wird getrocknet, in einen Soxhlet-Extraktor überführt und 96 Stunden lang kontinuierlich mit 100 Teilen siedendem Dimethylformamid extrahiert. Wenn das Dimethyl-formamid abgekühlt wird, kristallisiert Quaterphenyl aus, welches gesammelt und getrocknet wird. Dabei werden 7,3 Teile Quaterphenyl mit einem Fp von 313 bis 317°C erhalten.
Beispiel 12
Ein Gemisch aus 4 Teilen Natriumdiisopropylnaphthalinsul-fonat, 1,2 Teilen eines 3%igen Palladium-auf-Kohlenstoff-Katalysators, 20 Teilen Natriumhydroxid, 80 Teilen Wasser, 6,8 Teilen Natriumformiat und 15,7 Teilen Brombenzol wird gerührt und 4 Stunden zum Rückfluss erhitzt. Man lässt das Gemisch dann auf 90°C abkühlen, gibt eine weitere Charge von 6,8 Teilen Natriumformiat zu und erhitzt das Gemisch weitere 16 Stunden lang unter Rühren zum Rückfluss. Das Gemisch wird dann der Wasserdampfdestillation unterworfen, bis 800 Teile Destillat aufgefangen worden sind. Das Destillat wird mit Chloroform extrahiert; die Chloroformlösung enthält gemäss Gaschromatographie Benzol und Biphenyl, aber kein Brombenzol. Die Chloroformlösung wird dann durch Destillation eingeengt, wobei 5,01 Teile Biphenyl mit einem Fp von 69 bis 70°C erhalten werden.
Beispiel 13
Ein Gemisch aus 20 Teilen Natriumdiisopropylnaphthalin-sulfonat, 34 Teilen Natriumformiat, 6 Teilen eines 3%igen Palladium-auf-Kohlenstoff-Katalysators, 100 Teilen Natriumhydroxid, 400 Teilen Wasser und 100 Teilen 2,6-Dimethyl-4-bromanilin wird 4 Stunden lang zum Rückfluss erhitzt und gerührt. Man lässt das Gemisch auf 90°C abkühlen, gibt eine weitere Charge von 34 Teilen Natriumformiat zu und erhitzt das Gemisch wieder 3 Stunden lang unter Rühren zum Rückfluss. Eine dritte Charge von 34 Teilen Natriumformiat wird in ähnlicher Weise zugegeben, und das Erhitzen zum Rückfluss unter Rühren wird weitere 16 Stunden lang fortgesetzt. Das Gemisch wird hierauf der Wasserdampfdestillation unterworfen, um 2,6-Dimethylanilin zu entfernen, das als Nebenprodukt gebildet wird und das aus dem Destillat zurückgewonnen werden kann. Der nicht flüchtige Rückstand der Wasserdampfdestillation wird abgekühlt und filtriert, und der Filterkuchen wird mit 100 Teilen Wasser gewaschen und dann in 400 Teilen siedendem Methanol verrieben. Man filtriert die Methanollösung und lässt sie abkühlen, wobei 29,2 Teile 3,5,3',5'-Tetramethylbenzidin in Form von weissen Kristallen mit einem Fp von 168 bis 169,5°C ausgefällt werden. Eine zweite Charge von 1,4 Teilen mit einem Fp von 167 bis 168°C wird durch Einengen der Methanollösung auf 100 Teile erhalten.
Beispiel 14
Das Verfahren von Beispiel 12 wird wiederholt, ausser dass die 4 Teile Natriumdiisopropylnaphthalinsulfonat durch 4 Teile eines nicht-ionischen oberflächenaktiven Mittels ersetzt werden, das durch Kondensation von Cetylalkohol mit 17 Mol Äthylenoxid erhalten worden ist. Es wird wiederum das gesamte Brombenzol reduziert, jedoch wird ein höherer Anteil an Benzol gebildet, so dass nur 4,0 Teile Biphenyl isoliert werden.
Beispiel 15
Das Verfahren von Beispiel 12 wird wiederholt, ausser dass die 4 Teile Natriumdiisopropylnaphthalinsulfonat durch 4 Teile Natriumdodecylbenzolsulfonat ersetzt werden. Es wird wiederum das gesamte Brombenzol reduziert, jedoch hauptsächlich zu Benzol, so dass nur 0,94 Teile Biphenyl isoliert werden.
Vergleichsbeispiel
Das Verfahren von Beispiel 12 wird wiederholt, ausser dass kein oberflächenaktives Mittel verwendet wird. Die Reduktion verläuft unvollständig, und das abschliessend durch Einengen der Chloroformlösung erhaltene Produkt (4,9 Teile) enthält gemäss Gaschromatographie etwa gleiche Gewichtsmengen Brombenzol und Biphenyl.
Beispiel 16
Das Verfahren von Beispiel 13 wird wiederholt, ausser dass die 20 Teile Natriumdiisopropylnaphthalinsulfonat durch 20 Teile Natriumdodecylbenzolsulfonat ersetzt werden. Es werden 20,2 Teile 2,6-Dimethylanilin und 31,25 Teile 3,5,3',5'-Tetramethylbenzidin mit einem Fp von 168 bis 170°C erhalten.
Beispiel 17
Das Verfahren von Beispiel 12 wird wiederholt, ausser dass die 15,7 Teile Brombenzol durch 17,1 Teile 2-Bromtoluol ersetzt werden. Es werden 3,01 Teile 2,2'-Dimethylbiphenyl als farbloses Öl erhalten, das sich bei der Gaschromatographie als rein erweist.
Beispiel 18
Die Reaktion wird wie in Beispiel 12 ausgeführt, ausser dass die 15,7 Teile Brombenzol durch 19,9 Teile Bromacetophenon ersetzt werden. Nach der Wasserdampfdestillation wird das Destillat verworfen, jedoch wird der nicht flüchtige Rückstand der Wasserdampf destination durch Filtration gesammelt und mit 200 Teilen Chloroform extrahiert. Die Chloroformsuspension wird filtriert, und das Chloroform wird unter vermindertem Druck abdestilliert. Umkristallisation des Rückstands aus einem Gemisch von Toluol und Petroläther (Kp 60 bis 80°C) ergibt 4,54 Teile 4,4'-Diacetylbiphenyl mit einem Fp von 185 bis 186°C.

Claims (6)
1. Verfahren zur nicht-reduktiven Dehalogenierung von mit Wasser nicht mischbaren oder in Wasser schwach löslichen aromatischen und heteroaromatischen Verbindungen, die mindestens ein Chlor- oder Bromatom als Kernsubstituenten enthalten, unter Verknüpfung der chlor- oder bromsubstituierten Kerne in den vorher durch die Chlor- oder Bromatome eingenommenen Stellungen, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man zu einer solchen Verbindung in Gegenwart eines Hydrierungskatalysators und eines oberflächenaktiven Mittels unter stark alkalischen Bedingungen in Wasser 1 bis 3 Moläquivalente Ameisensäuresalz in Portionen zusetzt.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
dass man als oberflächenaktives Mittel ein anionisches Mittel, vorzugsweise Natriumdiisopropylnaphthalinsulfonat, verwendet.

3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
dass man als oberflächenaktives Mittel einen Phasenübertragungskatalysator, vorzugsweise ein quaternäres Ammoniumsalz der Formel:

4. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man als Ameisensäuresalz ein Alkalimetallsalz verwendet.
5. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man einen Katalysator auf Basis von Nickel, Palladium, Platin oder Ruthenium, vorzugsweise einen Palladium-auf-Kohlenstoff-Katalysator, verwendet.
6. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man es bei einer Temperatur bis zu 150°C, vorzugsweise bei einer Temperatur von 75 bis 110°C, insbesondere von 85 bis 102°C, ausführt.
