Abstract

Prodn. of cellulose pulp comprises treating lignin in an unbleached sulphite pulp so as to render at least half of lignin soluble to the extent of >=1-5 wt. % soln. of NaOH, heating pulp at 60 degrees C for >=15 mins. in NaOH contg. at least 8 wt. % NaOH or equivalent amount of an other hydroxide and >=1 wt. % of a salt of M2B4O7 (where M is alkali metal or at least the amount of borate, perborate or metaborate which is equivalent in foams of B content, to 1 wt. % of Na2B4O7), and then filtering, washing and bleaching the pulp the prepd. pulp is suitable in manufacture of cellulose esters of good colours and clarity.
