Abstract

In the cold caustic purification of cellulose, there is included in the caustic solution a boron compound selected from the group consisting of sodium metaborate, borax and boric acid, in a proportion sufficient to prevent mercerization of the cellulose. A non-mercerized, cold caustic refined, high alpha cellulose may be made from unbleached or partially bleached cellulosic material, especially wood-pulp, by means of a multi-stage refining process in which the cold caustic refining stage comprises subjecting said cellulosic material to an aqueous caustic solution at a temperature of from 5 DEG C. to 50 DEG C. containing from 10-16% by weight total titratable alkali and 6-28% by weight of a soluble borate compound of the group consisting of sodium metaborate, borax and boric acid, said proportion of borate being expressed as sodium tetraborate. Preferably, a temperature of about 35 DEG C. is used. Such refined cellulose has an alpha content in excess of 96% and is substantially all Cellulose I.
