Abstract

Nitrogen oxides NO and NO2 are used to replace Cl2for bleaching cellulose from wood fibre and dissolving away the lignin so that the fibres can be used for papermaking. The effluent from the process contains much less, if any Cl2 and hence is suitable for discharge.
