Door closers Door closers are known which, while allowing the pivoting of the door and its opening when it is pushed, ensure its automatic return to its closed position when the push ceases.
There is shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawing a known door closer and a variant.
Fig. 1 is a section through the known door closer shown when the door is in the closed position.
Fig. 2 shows this door closer when the door is in the 900 open position.
Fig. 3 shows a variant of the door closer shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the door being in the closed position.
The known door closer shown in FIG. 1 acts on a door which is represented in the closed position by its plane of symmetry X-X 'which then coincides with the plane of symmetry of the door closer; the door is secured, by means of a hinge not shown, to a cam 1 which has a plane of symmetry coinciding with the plane XX 'and which pivots around an axis 2 in the housing surrounding the shutter -door. Cam 1 acts on three cylindrical rollers 3, 3 ', 4, integral with a carriage 5 sliding in the casing between slides 6, 6'. The profile of the cam is such that the rollers, taken in pairs, 3-4 or 3'-4, can roll on it with very slight play.
Rollers 3-3 'intervene to return the door to its closed position; the roller 4 intervenes to slow this return stroke in the event of acceleration of the movement of the door, as will be seen below. The carriage 5 has brackets curved at right angles 7, 7 'on each of which rests one of the ends of coil springs 8, 8', the other end of each spring resting on a shoulder 9-9 ' of the crankcase. These springs have the role of automatically returning the door to the closed position, by acting on the cam 1 via the carriage 5 and the rollers 3, 3 '.
A rod 11z of a piston 11 sliding in a sealed cylinder 12, filled with oil and fixed in the housing, is kept in permanent contact with the carriage 5 by a spring 13; the two chambers of cylinder 12, located on either side of piston 11, communicate with each other via a pipe 14, comprising a check valve 15, arranged so that the oil can circulate only in the direction of the arrow f, and by a pipe with calibrated nozzle 16.
This assembly acts as a shock absorber in the closing movement of the door.
In fig. 2, the door is shown in the open position (plane Y-Y ') and the springs 8, 8' are compressed; The oil in the cylinder passed rapidly, during the opening of the door, through the valve 15 into the right chamber of the cylinder 12.
The calibrated nozzle 16 will then brake the passage of oil to the left chamber of the cylinder, and therefore the closing of the door.
In the case of normal closing of the door, that is to say only under the action of the springs 8, 8 ', the carriage 5 is supported on the piston rod 11Z and ensures the rotation of the cam and, consequently, of the door, by means of one of the rollers 3, 3 'rolling on the profile of the cam. The roller 4 is not in contact with the cam during this movement. On the other hand, the door can be accelerated when it is closed by an external cause, for example a draft. In this case, the door is driving and the cam, releasing the roller 3 or 3 ', comes to rest on the roller 4 which rolls on the profile of the cam without entering the notch of the latter.
It is therefore at this moment that the roller 4, which bears on the rod 1 1d by means of the carriage 5, supports the force necessary to retain the door and exerts a braking action on its movement.
In the variant of the fia. 3, the casing of the door closer is filled with oil, the sealed cylinder 12 is then replaced by an open cylinder 17 comprising a spring 18 playing the same role as the spring 13.
The cylinder 17 admits the oil from the crankcase freely at one of its ends 19 and, by means of a valve 20, at its other end 21; the valve 20 consists of a horizontally operating ball which can be applied to a seat, allowing oil to enter the cylinder, but preventing the exit. The chamber of the cylinder between the piston 22 and the valve 20 also communicates with the casing by a calibrated nozzle 23.
The object of the invention is to provide a door closer, which allows the automatic maintenance of the door in a separate position.
The door closer forming the subject of the invention com takes a cam integral with the door and pivoting in the housing about an axis, rollers forming a connection between this cam and a carriage also located in the housing and movable in that. - here, a device of return to make move the trolley automatically in the direction corresponding to the closing of the door,
and a braking device intervening during the automatic return of the carriage to the position corresponding to the closing of the door. It is characterized in that the cam has at least one notch hollowed out in its profile and of a height less than said profile, and in that at least one of the rollers, intended to ensure the normal automatic return of the door, is arranged in such a way that it penetrates into the notch in a position distinct from the cam to immobilize the latter in the absence of an external stress, and in that at least one other of the rollers,
intended to slow down the movement of the door when the latter is accelerated by an external cause, is arranged in such a way that it does not enter the notch.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, in fia. 4 to 13, various members that include an embodiment of the door closer, object of the invention.
The fia. 4 is a perspective view of such a member.
The fia. 5 and 6 are sections of another organ. The fia. 7 is a sectional view on a larger scale of a filling valve of the member shown in fia. 5 and 6.
The fia. 8, 9 and 10 show other details of this embodiment.
The fia. 11 is a section through another member that this embodiment comprises.
The fia. 12 is a section on an enlarged scale of a detail shown at fia. 11.
This embodiment comprises a casing, a cam integral with the door and pivoting about an axis in this casing, rollers forming a connection between this cam and a carriage also located in the casing and movable in the latter, a return device comprising two springs capable of making the carriage slack automatically in the direction corresponding to the closing of the door, and a damper intervening during the automatic return of the carriage to the position corresponding to the closing of the door. These various members are similar to the corresponding members of the door closer and of the known variant shown in fia. 1 to 3.
Some of these organs are described below.
This embodiment further comprises a means for automatically maintaining the door in a determined open position. This door is maintained by providing a cam 2 'in the profile, similar to the cam 1 of the fia. 1 to 3, two vertical notches 24, 24 'of height less than the height of the profile, and by associating them with rollers 3, 3' having a height slightly less than that of the notches.
The notches are cylindrical; their depth is determined in such a way that the rollers cannot escape without external stress, for example without a push on the door. The two notches are arranged symmetrically with respect to the plane of symmetry X-X ', this in the case where the opening of the door can be effected in both directions. The notches 24, 24 'extend parallel to the generatrices of the profile of the cam, from the base of the latter to a level situated below its upper face.
The rollers 3, 3 'are slightly lower in height than that of the notches and there is shown, by hatching at 25 on the cam, the area on which the roller 3' rolls. A roller 4, the height of which is the same as that of the cam, rolls over the entire height of the profile of the latter on the hatched area at 26. It cannot therefore enter the notches and cause a jerk when closing the door. The embodiment comprises a sump filled with oil, as in the known variant of the fia. 3. It also comprises an open damping cylinder 17.
The cylinder is filled at the same time as that of the crankcase when the assembly is fully assembled and the air stationing in the cylinder must be evacuated before the door closer is put into service.
To expel the air collected at the upper part of the cylinder, a lateral duct located at a lower level can be used, so as to be able to accommodate the calibrated exhaust nozzles on the side of the cylinder and thereby avoid the increase in height of the door closer caused by the housing of said nozzles at the top of the cylinder.
At the bottom of the cylinder, there is then a ring having on its side wall a circular groove communicating at its upper part with the cylinder and at its lower part with a channel through which the oil, expelled by the movements of the cylinder. piston, drives air out of the cylinder. The oil thus discharged is automatically replaced by the oil from the crankcase sucked from the lower part of the latter.
Such an arrangement is shown in FIGS. 5 and 6. The cylinder 17, of external parallelepiped shape, is housed flat in the housing, its upper face 27 being at a small distance from the cover of the door closer. At the bottom of the cylindrical cavity 28 is disposed a ring 29 comprising a median groove 30 communicating by a notch 31 with the cylindrical cavity, and at 32 with a channel 33 plugged at its end 34. The channel 33 is connected to the bath. oil from the crankcase through two channels 35-36. A needle 37, adjustable by a screw not shown, more or less closes the channel 35 during normal operation of the door closer.
To expel the air from the cylinder, before putting into service, the calibrated orifices 23 (fig. 3) and the screw needle 37 are opened wide, and the piston 22 is actuated; the oil and air expelled by the piston follow the path indicated by the arrows and emerge in the crankcase to go up to the upper part of the oil bath. The cylinder filling valve when the door is opened is a vertically operated valve shown in fig. 7.
It is constituted by a ball 39 resting on a seat 40, the oil inlet port being at 38, in the lower part of cylinder 17; this arrangement of the valve has a first advantage which is to draw an oil free of air bubbles; a second advantage appears in the operation of the door closer with an oil made very viscous by the cold. In fact, as soon as the reversal of the movement of the piston occurs, the ball immediately returns to its seat, its own weight acting in the direction of the closing of the wise pitch, which makes it possible to provide a large passage section for oil.
This large passage section then allows, even in the case of very viscous oil, rapid filling of the cylinder.
It is also useful to use mounting means which make it possible, after a certain period of operation, to remove the mainsprings 8-8 'and to replace them with new springs or of different strength, without having to do so. dismantle neither the door nor the door closer. For this, each spring is placed around a metal axis between two thrust washers capable of being brought together and blocked in a position which makes it possible to extract, through a window provided in the cover of the farm. door, the assembly formed by the spring,
the rod and the two stops. In a reverse operation, a new assembly is introduced, the washers are released from their locking position and the cover window is closed.
This device is shown in FIGS. 8, 9 and 10. The spring 8 is shown in section in FIG. 8; it is mounted between washers 41, 42 which can slide freely on a metal pin 43. The latter is immobilized in translation in one direction by a shoulder 44 of the housing and in the other direction by a ring 45. It has a groove 46 ring finger whose role will appear below. A sleeve 47 guides the spring 8.
The washers 41-42 bear respectively on the shoulder 44 of the housing and on a bent portion 48 of the carriage 5; this bent part 48 has a vertical slot 49 in which the end of the pin 43 is housed. As shown in FIG. 9, which is a partial plan view, the washer 42 comprises two median recesses 50-50, arranged symmetrically with respect to the axis 43.
The removal of a spring (8 or 8 ') takes place as follows: above each of the springs, in the cover of the casing, a window (not shown) is made. This being open, the door is maneuvered so as to move the carriage 5 in the direction of arrow F1, by the length necessary for the recesses 50 of the ring 42 to come opposite the groove 46; one then pushes in a jumper, shown in fig. 10, in the recesses 50 and in the groove 46.
The washer 42 is thus secured to the pin 43, so that the spring assembly 8, pin 43 and washer 41-42 can be removed by pulling it in the direction of arrow F2. It suffices to place a new set, assembled beforehand with a jumper; an operation of the door makes it possible to remove the jumper and thus free the washer 42; after closing the window, the door closer is ready to operate again.
In known door closers, the door closes automatically under the action of the driving springs of this mechanism with which is associated, in order to ensure a desired closing speed, a hydraulic braking member consisting essentially of a piston which delivers a fluid in a pipe comprising an orifice whose section is adjustable by means of a needle. Depending on whether this section is larger or smaller, the fluid flow is more or less rapid and the door closing speed, which depends on it, can thus be determined.
This speed being chosen, it is essential that it does not vary appreciably with age and this assumes that the operating conditions of the mechanism do not themselves vary. It is, in particular, essential that the section of the orifice is not reduced by the formation of a stationary film of the fluid used around said orifice.
We are led to consider a construction ensuring rolling of the fluid discharged through a narrow orifice, during the braking of the closing movement in the mechanism of the door closer, which makes it possible to avoid the formation of a stationary film and which consists in producing repeated impacts on the elements where such a film is formed which can result in particular, and this automatically, from the very movement of the door. Experience has shown that with fluids commonly used,
the stationary film is destroyed following an impact.
The embodiment according to the invention comprises a piston, not shown, (corresponding to the piston 11 of FIGS. 1 and 2) which delivers a fluid and causes it to circulate in a pipe 51 (FIGS. 11 and 12). The fluid accesses an annular orifice 59 adjustable by an adjusting screw 54 which has an extension forming a stop 57. In a bore 58, opening through the orifice 59 in the duct 51, a piston 60 slides between the stop 57 and said orifice which it can obstruct by its conical base 61.
The piston 60 executes a reciprocating movement controlled in one direction by the pressurized fluid and in the opposite direction by an opposing spring 62. The escape of the fluid during the closing of the door takes place through an orifice 55 to which access is more or less released at 63 by the piston 60. An orifice 64 allows, by canceling the back pressures, the free movement of this piston.
The piston 60 performs successive beats at the rate of the opening and closing of the door.
When the door is opened, the piston 11 (fig. 1 and 2) retrograde in its cylinder: the fluid not being discharged, no pressure exists in the duct 51, so that the piston 60 is pushed back by its spring 62 towards the orifice 59: it is the beating at the opening, which has the effect of destroying the stationary film which may have formed in 65a-65b when closing. The fluid flow section, at 63, can be adjusted once and for all by the screw 54, taking into account the assumed thickness of the film.
It should be noted that, to the impact action of the udder your plunger 60 on opening the door is added a mechanical shearing action of the film.
