Motor vehicle with pneumatic suspension. The present invention relates to a motor vehicle with matic tire suspension.
In this vehicle, above each wheel, the suspension consists of at least one cylinder in which a piston moves, one of the two being connected to the chassis of the vehicle and the other to the axle of the wheel,. this cylinder comprising means for allowing the admission of a compressed fluid into its interior, when the piston approaches one of its extreme positions and to allow the escape of this fluid, when it approaches its position extreme opposite, the intake and the exhaust being closed when the piston occupies a middle position in the cylinder.
The accompanying drawing shows by way of example views of different parts of a vehicle built according to the invention.
Fig. 1 schematically shows a vertical section of an embodiment of the pneumatic suspension device; Fig. 2 is a key side view of another embodiment with parts in section; Fig. 3 shows on a larger scale a vertical section through the cylinder of. the .fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a schematic view of a motor vehicle chassis established according to the invention; Fig. 5 is a partial plan view showing one mode of connection of the rear axle and of the chassis.
"As shown in Fig. 1, the suspension device of a vehicle established according to the invention, has for each end of axle 6 a cylinder 1, fixed to the frame 2 and in which moves a piston 3 integral with 'a rod 4 which passes through a stuffing box 5 fixed in the lower bottom of cylinder -1.
The rod 4 is connected to the axle 6 by a connecting rod 7.
The cylinder 1 is provided, at its upper part, with a control member for the intake in its interior of compressed air; this member being constituted for example by a valve 8.
This valve 8, which has a rod 9- penetrating a certain length inside the cylinder 1, allows said cylinder to be put into communication with a compressed air tank 10 when it is lifted. is applied to its seat by the pressure of the air contained in the reservoir 10, which is constantly supplied, for example by a compressor.
Finally, the wall of cylinder 1 is pierced, in its. lower part, two orifices II and 12 opening out into the atmosphere.
This suspension device operates as follows: With the vehicle to which it is fitted being stationary and the air reservoir 10 being empty, the piston 3 is fully upward.
Its upper face therefore pushes back the rod 9 of the valve 8, so that the latter is open.
When the compressor is started, the compressed air enters the cylinder 1 and, when the pressure is sufficient, it pushes the piston 3 down.
When the piston is lowered by a sufficient quantity to no longer act on the rod 9 of the valve 8, the latter falls back on its seat on which it remains applied, by the pressure of the compressed air in the reservoir 10, and it interrupts the flow of compressed air into cylinder 1.
If the vehicle is traveling on a perfectly level road, the piston 1 assumes, when the valve 8 is closed, a position such that the air pressure on its upper face equi free exactly the load supported by the cylinder.
This position of equilibrium of the piston 1 obviously depends on the quantity of compressed air contained above the piston, in the upper part of the cylinder, and on the sup load carried by the latter.
If, on the contrary, the vehicle is moving on a road with unevenness, the piston moving in the vertical movement of the axle rises or falls according to the unevenness or roughness of the ground and therefore oscillates. with variable amplitude, above and below its equilibrium position.
As long as these movements maintain the equilibrium position of the piston at. a sufficiently high height in the cylinder, this piston lifts the rod 9 of the valve 8 from time to time and each time allows the introduction of a certain quantity of compressed air into the cylinder 1.
The position of balance of the piston is lowered more and more until the moment when it no longer strikes the rod 9. The device then functions as a simple spring.
If, as a result of larger displacements, or if a leak decreases the quantity of compressed air contained in the cylinder, the piston lifts, during its oscillations, the valve 8 which introduces compressed air into said cylinder and makes lower the balanced position of the piston.
If, for some reason, the load decreases, for example, the equilibrium position of the piston goes down, this piston occasionally uncovers orifice II and each time lets a certain quantity of compressed air escape until that the equilibrium position of said piston has returned to the middle of the cylinder.
It can therefore be seen that the valve 8, on the one hand, and orifice 11, on the other hand, constantly tend to bring the equilibrium position of the piston back to the middle of the cylinder, whatever are the causes which tend to exclude it.
The pressure in the lower part of the cylinder does not vary during the oscillations of the piston, because this lower part is in communication with the atmosphere through the second port 12.
If, for some reason, a deep hole in the road, for example, the piston goes down to the bottom of the cylinder, it feigns this second port 12 and compresses the air between its underside and the bottom of cylinder 1. The pressure this air, increasing without limit, slows down the descent of the piston which cannot strike the lower end.
With the device described above and re presented in. fig. 1, the piston 3 could, in the event of a very violent bump, be pushed upwards with such force that, after opening the valve 8, it continues to rise and compresses the air located above from him at a pressure greater than that of the compressed air tank 10, which would cause the reflux of a certain quantity of air from the cylinder 1 into said tank.
The device shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 make it possible to avoid this drawback. In this case, the valve 8, instead of placing the compressed air reservoir 10 directly in communication with the cylinder 1 as has been indicated with reference to FIG. 1, communicates this reservoir with an annular intermediate chamber 13 formed, as can be seen in FIG. 3, by an upper double bottom of cylinder 1 and provided with a valve 14, opening towards the inside of the cylinder and opposing the reflux of the air from said cylinder towards the reservoir 10 .
This device also makes it possible to use a compressor supplying air at a pressure lower than that required by the device shown in fig. 1, because when the piston 3 lifts the valve 8, the chamber 13 fills with compressed air and, when the piston goes down, the pressure of the air contained in the cylinder is lowered and causes the opening of the valve 14 and the penetration into the cylinder 1. of the compressed air contained in the chamber 13.
In this embodiment, the wall of cylinder 1 is also pierced with an opening 15 which places said cylinder in communication with a chamber 16.
The purpose of this chamber 16 is to increase the smoothness of the suspension, as long as the displacements of the piston above and below the middle position are only of small amplitude, by reducing the variation in pressure for a given displacement of the piston.
When the piston 3 covers the opening 15 while rising, the chamber 16 no longer plays any role so that the pressure of the air contained. in cylinder 1 can rise fairly quickly and dampen the rise of said piston; the. suspension becoming harder and harder towards the courts.
The piston 3 is provided with a flange 17, in which the segments 18 are housed; the rod 4 of this piston is hollow and of large diameter and has, in its lower part, a housing for a ball joint 19 of a connecting rod 7.
This rod 4 slides with gentle friction in a cylinder 20, carried by the lower end of the cylinder 1, and which is lined with sealing rings 21 surrounding the hollow rod 4 of the piston.
This cylinder 20 is closed at its lower part. by a sliding plate 22 by rotating the connecting rod 7 and connected to said cylinder by a leather sheath 23 opposing the penetra-? -ion, in the apparatus, of the mud and the. dust (fig. 2).
Two other similar sheaths 24, containing grease, protect the ball joints 19 and 38 of the connecting rod 7.
In this embodiment, the section of the exhaust port 11 is adjustable at will by means of a needle screw 25; this orifice opens, as well as the lower orifice 12, into a chamber 26 from which the air escapes through a duct 27.
Lubrication of the various parts of the. cylin dre 1 can be produced in a very sim ple manner by having a closed cycle described in the air following the arrangement shown schematically in FIG. 4.
According to this arrangement, four exhaust pipes 27 of four cylinders 1 block in a tank 10a in which a compressor 28 sucks air, then forcing it into the tank 10 which is connected on the other hand, to each of the chambers. of his pope 8 by a conduit 29.
An orifice 30, arranged on the reservoir loa and constantly open, serves to compensate for the air losses.
If, with this arrangement, we introduce from time to. another, in the reservoir 10 has a certain quantity of oil, the latter is sucked in by the compressor 28 and discharged into the reservoir 10 from where it is gradually entrained by the air circulating in the conduits 29 connecting said reservoir 10 to valve chambers 8.
We could also reverse it. position of the components of the suspension apparatus, that is to say to make the piston integral with the frame and the cylinder integral with the axle; in the latter case, the control member for the admission of compressed air as well as the distribution valve 14 and the chamber 13 would be carried by the piston.
The motor vehicle established according to the invention further comprises another positive device intended to transmit the thrust or braking forces of the wheels to the chassis and to oppose the lateral movements of the axles.
This device, one embodiment of which is shown by way of example in fi-. 5, consists in providing the axles 6 with two push rods 32, articulated respectively at their ends, around said axles and with a pin 35 fixed to the frame 2: These rods can oppose by their rigidity even lateral movements of the axle, and they are reinforced by two other connecting rods 34.
The connecting rods 32 and 34 are fixed, on the one hand, to. a collar 35 in which the axle can turn, and, on the other hand, to a tube 36 by means of the collars 37; said tube 36 being able to turn around the axis 33 integral with the frame.
For the rear axle, a reaction rod prevents the axle from rotating in the collars 37 under the influence of the torque of the rear axle gears.
In order to gain height, the connecting rod 32 can be articulated by means of the ball 38 on the collar 36, as shown fi-. 2, instead of being connected to the axle.
The connecting rods 32 and 34 can be constituted by steel blades, in order to be able to twist slightly, when one wheel rises higher (read the other and the axle is no longer parallel to the axes 33.
