Hot and cold water mixer, operating by making up cold water The object of the invention is a mixer supplied with hot and cold water and intended to supply either cold water or water. at a desired temperature lower than the temperature of the hot water by adding cold water automatically dosed by a thermostatic device immersed in a mixing chamber and adjustable by an external knob.
Such a mixer is particularly suitable for domestic installations in which hot water is supplied by a gas water heater or instantaneous bath heater, of which the full flow of hot water is always used and which is set to supply the water. at the desired maximum temperature.
The invention can however receive many other applications because, in a general way, it can be used whenever it is necessary to obtain a circulation of water at a desired temperature and when there is a a hot water source at a temperature equal to or greater than the desired temperature; to cite another example, the temperature adjustment of the cooling water circuit of a power electronic tube will be indicated by adding cold water to the water heated by this tube.
An important aim of the invention is to make it possible to obtain cold water at any time without; that you have to modify the setting of the thermostatic component. To this end, the mixer according to the invention comprises a cold water supply pipe in communication with an outlet controlled by a cold water tap,
while the thermostatic member controls a valve arranged between this cold water supply pipe and the mixing chamber and this mixing chamber communicates with a hot water inlet and with a mixed water outlet controlled by a hot water tap.
By arranging the cold water tap downstream of the cold water make-up passage and by arranging the hot water tap downstream of the mixing chamber, it is possible to obtain direct cold water by opening the cold water tap without, that the flow of this cold water which does not pass through the mixing chamber is controlled by the thermostatic member, so that,
to obtain cold water, it is not necessary, healthy- to modify the setting of the thermostatic member and after obtaining cold water, it is possible again, by simply opening the tap. hot water, obtain water mixed at the temperature already set previously. In addition, the cold water thus obtained directly is not reheated by its passage through the mixing chamber.
An embodiment of the invention is described below, by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing, in which FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of the mixer.
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are corresponding cross sections established respectively according to. lines II-II, III-III and IV-IV of fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a partial profile view, in longitudinal section, on a larger scale, showing the elements of the mixer in operating position. The body 1 of the mixer comprises a longitudinal inlet duct 2 and a longitudinal outlet duct 3 with outlet pipe 4.
The body 1 is secured to a hot water inlet pipe 5 and a cold water inlet pipe 6 opposite which, the body carries, on the side of the pipe 3, pipes 7-8 receiving a faucet. hot water and a cold water faucet including buttons. are indicated in 9-10 and the shutters in 11-12. These cooperate with seats 13-14 separating the pipes 2 and 3.
The buttons 9-10 are fixed by screws 15-16 on threaded rods 17-18 which carry the obturators and are screwed into the fixed nuts 19-20, themselves screwed into the threaded pipes 7-8.
Inside the conduit 2 is mounted a tube 21, welded to the bottom of the conduit 2, at the left end of FIG. 1 and open at its right end on the side where the cold water make-up arrives. The tube has a hole 22, corresponding to the passage through the seat 13, and at its other end a set of orifices 45.
Beyond the open end of the tube 21 and the pipe 6, the pipe 2 is extended by a threaded pipe 23, used for the assembly of the parts and closed by a screw cap. 24, which extends into the duct 2, by its end 25 pierced with an axial bore.
There is indicated at 26 a sealing ring housed in a groove, peripheral of part 25 and preventing the passage of cold water around this part 25. Inside the tube 21 is coaxially disposed a tube 29 which comprises an extension 39, cylindrical, of small diameter, with an axial channel 40, closed by a screw cap 41 welded.
Opposite the cold water inlet pipe 6, the wall of the stopper 24 has been milled, so as to provide openings between the fins 27, in a crown, which connect the end 25 to the bottom of the stopper 24 .
In the end 25 and in the central part between the fins 27 can slide a slide 28 integral with the end of the extension 39 of the tube 29 to which is fixed by welding, at its other end, a bellows 30, closed by a bottom 31. The internal volume of tube 29 and of bellows 30 is filled with an expandable liquid introduced through channel 40.
A compression spring 32 is interposed between the end 25 and the tube 29 which may have a hexagonal outer profile for its guidance by the outer tube 21. The annular space between the outer tube 2.1 and the tube 29 constitutes a mixing chamber through which the hot water flow and any additional cold water flow.
On the external face of the bellows 30 acts the head 33 with a square guide of a threaded rod 34, being screwed without turning into a threaded barrel 38, carrying an external adjustment handle 35 in the form of a graduated drum movable opposite a fixed index or mark. There is indicated at 36 a screw for fixing the lever 35 on the barrel 38 and at 37 a barrel retaining ring 38 screwed into an internal thread of the body 1.
On the internal face of the ring 37 rests a shoulder of the barrel and a sealing ring is housed in a peripheral groove of the wide part of the barrel.
On the extension 39 of the tube 29 and behind the drawer 28, is slidably mounted an annular pet valve 42, which is biased on a seat 43, provided inside the end 25 of the stopper 24, by a helical spring 44, arranged around the extension 39.
The operation of the mixer is as follows. It will be assumed that the hot water inlet pipe 5 is connected to the outlet of an instantaneous gas water heater supplied with pressurized water and that the water heater is set to supply a water flow limited to a temperature at least equal in all cases to the maximum temperature desired by the user, for example from 60o to 7011C. It will also be assumed that the adjustment lever 35 is graduated such that, for its various angular positions,
the drawer 28 is located just at the limit of the solid wall of the part 25 on the side of the cold water inlet when the temperature of the liquid in the mixing chamber is equal to that corresponding to the division of the handle 35 opposite the fixed index.
Under these conditions, if the hot water tap 9 is wide open and the water temperature in the mixing chamber is higher than that of the above division, because the water supplied by the heater is at a temperature higher than the desired temperature, the thermostatic capsule, in contact with the hot water which enters the interior of the tube 21 through the orifices 45, expands and the drawer 28 discovers the openings of the stopper 24, allowing both a make-up of cold water to pass from the cold water inlet pipe 6 to the mixing chamber,
until the liquid temperature in this chamber is brought back to the desired value ensuring the appropriate blocking or restriction of the passage of the cold water pipe 6 to the mixing chamber, the valve 42 then being against the action of the spring 44, away from its seat 43,
by the pressure of the cold water which is higher than that of the hot water supply. The water in the mixing chamber, the temperature of which is thus automatically adjusted to the desired value, flows through the seat 13, the outlet duct 3 and the outlet pipe 4, which can be single or multiple. An automatic adjustment of the temperature of the drawn water will therefore be obtained, the handle 9 of the hot water tap remaining in the fully open position.
If you only want cold water, leave the hot water tap 9 closed and only open the cold water tap 10.
It will be noted that, with the slide 28 open, if the pressure of the hot water in the mixing chamber is then equal to or greater than that of cold water, the valve 42, under the action of the spring 44 and possibly under the effect of this pressure difference, is applied to its seat 43 and, consequently, prevents any flow of hot water by the wise cold water intake steps, whatever the operating conditions, and especially when it is desired to draw cold water, while the thermostatic member is still hot enough for the drawer 28 to know in the open position.
To calibrate the thermostatic member, it suffices to modify the setting of the lever 35, fitted on a cone of the barrel 38, after having unscrewed the locking screw 36 which is tightened when the operation is carried out.
