<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Timepiece with jumping second We already know timepieces with jumping seconds, that is to say in which the second hand, instead of making, for example, four or five jumps per second, in made a single, snapshot. The known devices, however, have drawbacks, in particular their delicate operation and their high cost price.
The present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks; its object is a timepiece of the aforementioned type, which is characterized by a wheel integral with the second axis, forming the driving wheel, and by a lever subjected to the action of a spring and bearing close to its free end a pinion and a lift, said pinion meshing simultaneously with said driving wheel and with a jumping second wheel, forming the driven wheel, mounted idle on the frame of the timepiece, not coaxially with the driving wheel, and integral a second hand, said lift being intended to temporarily engage in the teeth of the driven wheel, all in such a way that, with the timepiece in motion,
the pinion driven by the driving wheel rolls on the driven wheel while the latter is immobilized by said lift and moves the lever against the action of its spring until the lift is released from the toothing of the driven wheel, the spring then acting to push the lever back to its initial position, so that the pinion now rolls on the driving wheel momentarily stationary and abruptly advances said driven wheel by one tooth every second.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention. Only what is necessary for understanding the invention has been shown in the drawing.
Fig. 1 is a partial plan view, taken from the side of the bridges, of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 11-11 of FIG. 1, further showing part of the cog of the timepiece.
The watch movement partially shown in the drawing comprises a normal finishing gear train, formed by wheel 1 and pinion 2 of large medium, of wheel 3 and of pinion 4 of small medium, and of wheel 5 and pinion 6 of second, the latter mobile being eccentric with respect to the movement. The engine barrel, the escapement and the balance are not shown. The aforementioned mobiles are pivoted as usual in the plate 7 and in the finishing bridge 8.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Between the plate 7 and a bar 9 fixed on the finishing bridge 8 is pivoted an axis 10 integral with a lever 11.
A wire spring 12, bearing against the wall of a recess 13 made in the finishing bridge 8 and held on this bridge by means of a screw 14, acts on the lever 11 and tends to rotate it in the direction time of fig. 1. Near its free end, the rocker 11 carries a pinion 15 and a lift 16 preferably made of ruby. The pinion 15 is mounted idle on a tenon 17 driven into the lever 11 and is held axially by a ferrule 18. The pinion 15 is engaged, on the one hand, with a wheel 19 wedged on an extension of the axis of the second wheel 5, beyond the finishing bridge 8, and, on the other hand, with a second wheel in the center 20.
The wheels 19 and 20 respectively form the driving wheel and the driven wheel of the jumping second mechanism. The wheel 20 is integral with a pin 21 passing through the hollow shaft of the large-scale pinion 2 and carrying at its free end a second hand, not shown. The axis 21 is pivoted, on the one hand, in a bar 22 fixed to a lug 23 of the finishing bridge 8 and, on the other hand, inside the hollow shaft of the pinion 2, its maintenance in direction axial being provided by a collar 24.
On the shaft of pinion 2 is mounted with greasy friction, in the usual manner, the roadway 25 connected by a timer not shown to the hours wheel 26.
The lift 16 has the same shape as a usual anchor lift and is intended to temporarily engage in the teeth of the wheel 20, as explained below.
The watch described and shown operates as follows. When the watch is running, the seconds wheel 5, and with it the wheel 19, rotates in small jerks, for example every fifth of a second. At the start of a cycle of one second, the rocker 11 occupies a position such that the lift 16 is engaged in the teeth of the wheel 20 and immobilizes this wheel. As a result of the rotation of the wheel 19 in the counterclockwise direction of FIG. 1, the pinion 15 is driven clockwise, but since the wheel 20 is immobilized, the pinion 15 must roll on the wheel 20, its axis 17 moving to the left in FIG. 1 and bringing with it the lever 11 in its movement, against the action of the spring 12.
Every fifth of a second, the lever 11 moves one notch in the counterclockwise direction, so that the lift 16 gradually comes out of the gap of the wheel 20 in which it was originally engaged. The lift has a size and a shape such that, during the fifth beating of the wheel 19, the lift 16 disengages from the teeth of the wheel 20 and allows the spring 12 to act to push the lever 11 into its initial position. During this abrupt movement, clockwise, of the rocker 11, the wheel 19 is stationary and the pinion 15 can roll on it, turning in the clockwise direction of the fi-. 1 and driving the seconds wheel at the center 20 integral with the second hand.
Scarcely has the rocker 11 started its return movement, in the clockwise direction, that the lift 16 engages with the next gap of the wheel 20, again ensuring the immobilization of the wheel 20 during the start of the next cycle.
Because the pinion 15 is constantly in mesh with the two wheels 19 and 20, it is impossible for the jumping second hand to have a time offset of more than one second from the second wheel 19 or 5.
The jumping seconds mechanism described and shown offers very high operating reliability and its cost price is minimal. It consists of a small number of parts and can be easily fitted to an existing watch movement. The energy consumed is minimal, because there is very little friction and no jumper is necessary.
