Fig. 15 shows, in perspective and seen from the right, the same protective device and the same ejector.
Figs. 16 and 17 show, respectively in elevation (parts in section) and in plan, the ejector of the nails and the control thereof. If we refer to fig. 1, 5 shows the frame of the machine which is mounted on a base 6 and which comprises, on the left side, a debtor corridor 7 terminating above an inclined carrier 8 for the nails. The thread is fed from a spool 9 which, preferably, is fixed on a support 10 which releases the thread 11 as a function of the tension with which the machine acts on this thread 11. The support 10 of the spool, which delivers the wire, as well as the conveyor 8 for the nails manufactured, do not constitute essential parts of the machine shown and are therefore not described in detail.
A control box 12, comprising switches for starting and stopping the machine, is mounted thereon in a place easily accessible by the operator. The machine is driven, preferably, by an electric motor or the like (not shown) which is connected, by a belt or otherwise, to a flywheel 13 attached to the left of the machine. The feed device for advancing the wire in an in termittent manner is designated, as a whole, by 14 and, as those skilled in the art will readily appreciate, comprises a header slide which is driven by a crank, this slide serving to form a head at the free end of the wire engaged in the machine.
The wire then advances while being driven by the feed device until it is brought into power with knives which cooperate with each other and which serve to cut the wire while they are form the tip of the nail as a result of cutting. The cutting is done at a sufficient distance from the die holder so that a sufficient part of the wire protrudes on this die holder so that the head of the next nail can be formed by the header slide.
The rotation of the flywheel 13 is transmitted to a crank carried by a shaft mounted transversely in the machine and at the rear end thereof and, as shown in section in FIG. 2, the shaft comprises an eccentric crank 15 whose connecting rod 16 transmits the movement to the stubborn slide designated, as a whole, by 17. The slide 17 is directed, during its reciprocating movement, by supports 18 and 19 fixed to the 'before the slider and above and below it. The supports 18 and 19 are mounted respectively on a removable cover 20 and on a cross 21 of the frame.
To obtain precise operation of the header slide, spaced supports 22 are fixed to the rear end of the slide and act on a wider extension 23 of the slide, this extension extending to the top of the crank. A pin 24, placed transversely with respect to the header slide, connects the connecting rod 16 to the latter. Preferably, the upper 18 and lower 19 supports are given the dimensions and locations shown, in section, in FIG. 13, while the spaced supports have similar shapes, as shown at 22a in FIG. 3.
As seen in fig. 3, the supports 22a are spaced from one another over the entire width, approximately, of the machine, so that the slide makes an exact reciprocating movement. The hammer 17a, carried by the header slide 17, is mounted thereon so as to be able to be adjusted longitudinally and for this purpose it has a hole 196 in which is housed a wedge 197 resting, at one end, on a adjusting screw 198 and, at its other end, on an adjusting screw 199 so that loosening one of the screws and tightening the other causes the wedge <B> 197 </B> to move into the hole 196, transversely to the slide (fig. 9).
A rod 200 (Fig. 8) is housed in an axial bore of the slide and its rear face 201 is inclined in accordance with the adjacent face of the wedge <B> 197. </B> The other end of the rod 200 has a threaded notch 202 for receiving a tool which serves to remove the rod 200. The front part 204 of the rod 200 is tapped at 205 at its front end to receive a tool which makes it possible to remove this front part 204. The aligned parts 17a , 204 and 200 of the hammer are housed in a sleeve 207 which is hand held in the axial bore of the slide by a clamping screw 208.
To prevent the frame from being extended by the pressure exerted by the slider during the formation of the head, a spacer 25 is fixed longitudinally to the upper part of the machine above the removable cover 20. The spacer is subjected to pressure. a prior tension by tightening a nut 26 and one obtains a similar appearance to a rigid box which has a minimum weight while the moving parts of the machine are well arranged and easily accessible.
Arms 27 and 28, carrying knives for shearing and forming the tips of the nails, respectively comprise ears 29, 30 and 31, 32 spaced apart vertically. The ears have a shape such that they can overlap in the vertical median plane of the header slide and in this covering position they are articulated to each other by axes 33 and 34.
The axis 33 is retained in the cover 20 and the axis 34 is maintained in the cross 21 of the frame under the header slide. We see in fig. 2 and 3 that the ears 29 and 30 of the left knife arm 27 are spaced apart a greater vertical distance than the ears 31 and 32 of the right knife arm 28 so that the ears 29 and 30 surround and overlap the corresponding ears 31 and 32. The mounting of the two arms 27 and 28 on the vertical and aligned axes 33 and 34 one above and the other below the slider makes it possible to use a control mechanism for these arms which avoids any deflection under load which would adversely affect the accuracy and speed of manufacture.
The movement of the knife-holder arms, during the operation of the machine, is obtained with the aid of the header slide and by means of a tilting device. We see more especially in fig. 3 and 9 that the right arm 28 comprises, at its free end, a vertical axis 35 to which is articulated a tilting rod 36 which, in turn, is connected by an articulation axis 37 to a bottom rod 38. L 'other end of the link 38 is articulated to a vertical axis 40 to the frame.
A third rocking link 41 is articulated, at one end, at the point of connection between the links 36 and 38 and at its other end, by a vertical axis 42, to the stopping slide. In this regard, it should be noted that the arm 28 is cut to form a horizontal passage for the tilting links 36 and 41 which operate by crossing this arm 28. The left arm 27 comprises, in a similar manner, Tilting links 43, 44 and 45 connected by means of an axis 46 to the arm 27, to the frame by an axis 47 and to the slide by an axis 48. The vertical axis 40 of the right arm 28 is twisted, at its lower end, in the slider 49 made in the frame as clearly visible on the fia. 13.
The upper end of this axis 40 is journaled in the cover 20 and in a slider 50. Similar cra paudines are machined, at 51 and 52, for the axis 49 on the left side of the frame, respectively in the frame and in the hood.
The arrangement described above for the tilting links between the header slide and the knife-holder arms is such that, when the slide moves back to its maximum rear position, the tilting links 43, 44 and 36, 38 are brought to their position. dead positions. When the slide occupies its position before the maximum (as shown in fig. 9), the same links are brought to their inclined positions with respect to each other, so that the knife arms are moved away from their positions. active shown in fig. 8.
The assembly of the knife-holder arms, to allow their pivoting around the pivots above and below the stubborn slide, gives these arms a rigid support and the abrupt tilting or kneeling device improves movements with acceleration and with deceleration, which contributes to obtaining a high total speed for the operation of the machine. The deceleration of the arms 27 and 28, when the knives meet, is particularly important and, in the machine in question, it provides an operation in which the knives do not come into contact with each other or are not damaged if the machine is running. empty and that no work is between the knives.
It is thus possible to precisely adjust the positions of the knives with respect to each other, so that they form a very clear point at the end of each nail. This precise setting can be retained for long periods of operation. This appears to result, at least in part, from the fact that the cover 20 forms with the frame a rigid assembly, analogous to a box (fig. 12 and 13) which supports, via the pins 40 and 47, about 80% of the forces during cutting.
It has been found that the control of the knife-carrying arms, in the machines used hitherto, to bring these arms together by cams or eccentrics, in particular by a crank shaft, is the cause of certain limitations for these known machines, these limitations affecting, in a prejudicial manner, the maximum speed for the operation of the machine. The drive of the knife-holder arm, in the machine shown, is such that only about 20% of the cutting forces are supported by the main header slide and by the main crank shaft of the machine, these forces being supported during the receding stroke of the slide.
The free and outer end of each of the knife holder arms comprises an integral extension which carries a stopper intended to come into contact with the lateral face of a die holder 77. The left arm 27 is provided with the stopper 53 and that on the right 28 of the stopper 54. In the stopper 53 is made a raudé hole 55 in which is housed an adjusting screw 56 intended to bear on a hard steel pad 57. The position of the right arm 28 is adjusted, in a similar manner, relative to the side face of the die holder by an adjusting screw 58 and a hard steel pad 59.
The buffers 57 and 59 positively limit the movement of the knives towards their cutting position and the massive side plates 60 and 61 of the die-holder 77 absorb shocks and prevent these shocks from being transmitted, through knives, wire to section ner.
To detach a nail from the wire and to forge, at the same time, the point of this nail, a knife 65 is mounted on each arm 27 or 28, the details of the assembly being visible in FIG. <B> 11. </B> The face of the knife 65, which is on the side of the head die, is planar and slopes towards this die. The upper and lower faces of the knives are oblique or inclined from the aforesaid face so that the knife has the shape of a wedge. The lower and oblique face of the knife rests on a wedge-shaped block 66 and its upper and oblique face is held by a sliding wedge 67. The knife 65 can be adjusted laterally with respect to the corresponding arm 27 or 28 by a screw. adjustment 68 with locking nut 69.
The sliding wedge 67 abuts a threaded plug 70 which is clamped against the wedge by a socket head screw 71. The exposed end of the plug 70 includes a box head 70n for advancing and retracting the plug into the threaded hole in the screw. arm 27 or 28. These three adjustment modes, described above for the knife 65, make it possible to adjust the latter vertically and horizontally with respect to the arm which supports it and to lock it firmly in its adjusted position . Specialists will realize that the cutting edge of the knife 65 has a notch with a chamfered edge according to the shape that it is desired to give to the tip of the nail. The knife, shown for this example, makes it possible to obtain a prismatic tip with four faces.
To tighten the work strongly against the die holder 77 while the nail head is being formed and during the swimming section, gripping dies 73 and 74 are used which are mounted on the side face of the nail. die holder. The upper die 73 is attached to the latter while the lower die 74 can move vertically between close limits. The front face of each die is narrower than its back side (as seen in Figs. 6 and 6a) so that the protruding corners 75 and 76 can be used to lock the fixed die 73 in the die holder 77 .
Preferably, the mobile die 74 is given the same shape as the die 73 and it is guided, during its vertical movements, between the wedges 75 and 76. This die 74 is urged normally towards the lower limit of its movement by a rod 78, biased by a spring and supported near the lower edge of the die holder 77. The latter is supported by a wedge 79 which can be adjusted transversely with respect to an inclined face 80 of the frame 5 behind the die holder. A threaded sleeve 81, with a hexagonal head 82, is screwed into the plate 60 which is to the left of the die holder. A socket head screw 83 passes through the sleeve 81 and is screwed into the wedge 79 which supports the die holder 77.
We see in fig. 6a and 10 that by moving the wedge 79 transversely with respect to the die holder 77 with the aid of the adjustment means 82 and 83 the whole of the die holder can be advanced or retracted on the frame and with respect to the header slide . The gripping dies 73 and 74 include notches to form the hole 73a; die holder 77 is perforated at 77n and wedge 79 is perforated at 79a to allow the thread to advance through the machine.
The die holder 77 is clamped against the frame 5 by bolts 210 and 211 fixed lengthwise and passing through the frame immediately above and below the die holder. The head of bolt 210 is wedge-shaped which rests on the top face of the die holder so that it is held in place when nut 210a is tightened. At the lower part of the die holder, the head of the bolt 211 has, preferably, the shape of a hook which is engaged in a groove made in the lower edge of the die holder 77 so that the latter is tight against the frame, through the wedge 79, when the nut 211a is tightened together with the nut 210a.
Obviously, the adjustment of the nuts 210a and 211a is accompanied by a corresponding transverse adjustment of the wedge 79, so that the position of the die holder assembly 77 can be adjusted forward or backward. the machine.
To actuate the movable gripping matrix 74, a lever 84 is articulated around an axis 85 fixed to the frame of the machine directly below the header slide. The lever 84 is normally biased in the direct direction with respect to FIG. 2 by a powerful coil spring 86 and by a roller 87 attached to the rear end of the lever to engage with a cam 88 attached to the crank shaft. The front end of the lever 84 carries a threaded and adjustable lug 89, the upper end of which, in the form of a cup, serves as a housing for a rod 90, the rounded upper end of which supports a sliding finger 91 on which the end rests. lower part of the mobile gripping matrix 74.
The profile of cam 88 is preferably. such that the work is gripped firmly between the dies 73 and 74 when the head 92 is formed on the nail, as seen in fig. 9 and that the work is also clamped strongly between these dies when the nail 93 is detached from the wire as shown in fig. 10. When the header slide moves back and away from the die carrier, after shaping the head, the cam 88 releases the grabbing die 74 so that the work can advance under the control of the feed mechanism without that the work is retained by the matrices. These can be adjusted vertically by means of a screw 94 and a locking nut 96 which are supported by the front end of the lever 84.
Preferably, the work is fed intermittently through the machine by means of a drag feed mechanism which comprises a driving carriage, the assembly of which is denoted by 100 in FIG. 5. This carriage grips the work and feeds it through the die carrier a predetermined length after which it returns to grip the work again to feed it. The axis of the work, formed by a wire which is advanced in the machine, is designated by 101 in FIG. 5, while the wire is designated 102 in FIGS. 5a, 5b and 5c. The carriage 100 is driven in a reciprocating motion in the feed device 14 which comprises a bottom 14a and an upper wall 14b.
The carriage comprises rollers 103 and 104 which bear on the upper wall of the device. A bar 106 is articulated at 105 to the carriage and carries a hard steel jaw 107 capable of acting on the lower face of the wire to be driven. A jaw 108, made of hard steel, is housed in the carriage proper immediately above the jaw 107. The articulated bar 106 slides, during the reciprocating movement of the carriage, on a roller 109 which passes through a slot 110, practi ced in the background 14a.
The roller 109 is movable vertically and thus exerts a gripping pressure on the jaws 107 and <B> 108. </B> The roller 109 can turn freely around an axis mounted on the arm 111 of an angled lever 112. The latter is biased in the indirect direction around its pivot 113 by a spring 114 exerting a traction on a rod 115 articulated at 116 at the lower end of the angled lever. To interrupt, in an intermittent manner, the clamping effect exerted by the jaws 107-108 on the work, a cam 117 is used which presses on a roller 118 mounted on the lower arm of the angled lever 112.
The cam 117 is rotated by the means described below and this cam is made to include bosses and hollows such that, when the carriage 100 advances to drive the thread, the spring 114 operates to grip the work and to thus advance the thread through the machine. Likewise, the bosses of the cam 117 stop the spring pressure and hence the clamping effect on the work as the carriage 100 moves back along it.
The control for the advancement of the work is formed, preferably, as shown in FIG. 4. It comprises a chain 120, driven by a pinion 121 mounted on the crank shaft to the right of the machine. A pinion 122 is driven by the chain 120 and is mounted on a transverse shaft 123 protruding to the left of the machine to drive the cam 117. The pinion 122 not only rotates the shaft of the cam 117 but bears, on its face external (as clearly visible in Figs. 4b and 4c), an articulated control which oscillates the shaft 124 of the feed mechanism by drive.
Regarding the control for the drive mechanism, it should be noted that after forming the head of a nail, the gripping dies must be loosened so that the work can advance along the entire length of the nail. 'one nail, plus the length necessary for the formation of the next head, before the header slide reaches its fully raised position and before the nail is cut from the work. To coordinate this advancement with the other operations to be performed, it is desirable that the advancement be done while the crankshaft is rotating by about 100.
As a 180 movement of the crank shaft is required for the formation of the head and a movement of 180 for the recoil of the header slide, the feed is obtained by the articulated drive as shown, while the shaft hand crank turns about 100. The remaining part of the rotation of this shaft, i.e. about 260, is used for the return of the drag carriage. Therefore, training feeding is characterized by fast forwarding and slow rewinding.
To obtain the desired forward movement, an arm 125 is wedged on the oscillating shaft 124 and this arm is connected, by a link 126, to an elbow arm <B> 127 </B> which is freely mounted on a button crank 128 carried by the pinion 122. The movement of the arm 127 is controlled by a link 129 articulated, at 130, to the frame and at 131 to the arm 127. The link <B> 129 </B> is completed, at its free end, by a fork (fig. 4b) which straddles the arm <B> 127 </B> where the pivot 131 is located. When the crank knob 128 turns, the pivot <I> 127a < / I> of the arm 127 follows a deformed elliptical path as shown in broken lines in FIG. 4c in 132.
The upper part of the path is traveled for a rotation of the crankshaft of about 100 and it causes an oscillation of the arm 125 in the indirect direction. The remaining portion of the deformed elliptical path corresponds to about 260 of the movement of the crankshaft and causes the arm 125 to move in the indirect direction, which corresponds to a recoil of the drive feed mechanism.
We see in fig. 5, 5a and 5c that on the left end of the oscillating shaft 124 is wedged a toothed sector 133 oriented downwards and passing through a slot made in the upper wall 14b of the feed device 14. This sector meshes with a mesh holder 134 mounted on the carriage 100.
For each revolution of the crankshaft, the chain 120 controls a complete oscillation cycle of the feed mechanism, this cycle being characterized by a rapid advance towards the die carrier and a slow return, the carriage moving freely. relative to the work during its return while it grips the work during its forward movement. It is seen in fig. 4b that the position of the crank knob 128 can be adjusted relative to the pinion 122 using a screw 135 so that nails, having different lengths, can be made by changing the stroke of the knob 128.
For this purpose, a rectangular guide 136 is made in the pinion 122 to serve as a housing for a block 137 with a tapped hole. The guide is covered with a plate 138 so that the block 137 is held in a position normal to the cylindrical face of the pinion 122 and can be moved inward and outward along a radius of the pinion to. using the adjustment screw 135.
In the event that the work is stuck between the gripping dies or in the event that excessive force opposes the advance of the work in the die holder, the machine is immediately stopped. The means for obtaining this stop are clearly visible in FIGS. 10 and 5c. The frame, which is in alignment with the feed mechanism, has a bore 140 in which a guide bush 141 for the work can slide. In the bore 140 is housed a spring 142 which bears on an annular shoulder on the outside of the sleeve 141, so that the latter is biased, in the axial direction of the bore, in a direction opposite to that according to which the opening advances in the socket.
An annular groove 143 is countersunk in the socket and a pivoting finger 144 is engaged, at one end, in this groove 143. The middle part of the finger 144 is widened at 145 so that the finger can oscillate or pivot in a transparent hole. versai 146 practiced in the frame. The other end of the finger 144 rests on a rod 147 placed longitudinally in the frame and this rod is in contact with the control member 148 of a switch 149 which is placed in a relay circuit controlling the main motor. of the machine. When the relay circuit is or green, as a result of the displacement of the switch actuator 148, the main engine of the machine is stopped.
The fi-. 5c shows the effect, on the work 102a, of its jamming in the die holder or between the gripper dies of the machine. As the work is prevented from advancing further in the die holder, the forward movement of the carriage 100 causes the bending or deformation of the wire, as can be seen in FIG. 5c, the loop or fold formed pushes the sleeve 141 towards the inside of the machine against the action of the spring 142.
This movement of the socket causes the finger 144 to tilt and, consequently, the operation of the switch 149, which stops the machine. This safety device is particularly important in the case where several machines are monitored by the same operator. Normally it does not require the attention of the operator, except when the latter has to renew the spool of wire 9, but it is desirable to stop the machine as soon as a jam occurs to prevent everything. other progress of the work.
During normal machine operation, the feed mechanism, which is to the left of the machine, is protected by a plate 150, forming a cover (fig. 7), held in place by screws 151 and 152, with head. hexagonal. A knurled knob 153, protruding from the left face of the mechanism, serves to rotate a cam 154 which can bear on the lower tip 155 of the angled lever 112.
By rotating the knob 153, the cam 154 moves the elbow lever 112 in the indirect direction with respect to the thread <B> 5, </B> which stops the clamping of the jaws 107 and <B> 108. </B> The cam 154 acts like the cam 117 driven by the engine but it differs from the latter by the fact that it is actuated by hand to make the jaws act on the work by clamping, which facilitates the introduction of the thread at the start of a spool.
To lubricate the work, when it is introduced between the gripping dies, recourse is had to a lubricant reservoir 215 which is mounted on the upper edge of the plate and which is connected, by the passages 213 and 214, at hole 77a in the die holder.
Preferably, the machine is made to include straightening rollers, the assembly of which is designated by 156. These rollers are formed as usual and are offset with respect to each other as shown in FIG. 4a so that the wire 102 is straightened when it is pulled between the four offset rollers. The two rollers 157 and 158 placed on the right can turn freely around pivots mounted on a slide <B> 159 </B> which is moved transversely with respect to the straightening frame using a pin 160 which, at its tower, is moved crosswise by a profiled lever 161 fixed to the right of the rectifier assembly 156 (fig. 4c).
When the lever <B> 161 </B> is raised to the horizontal position, the recessed portions of the profile faces 161a (fig. 5) allow the slide 159 to move transversely away from the wire 102 to facilitate the threading of a new spool. To further facilitate this start-up, retaining rollers 162 and <B> 163. </B> The roller 162 can be used eccentrically, at 164, on a shaft 165 provided with a lever which, being maneuvered, allows the roller 162 to be brought closer or further away from the structure.
As nails can be made by the machine at a very high speed, especially at such a speed that the nails do not have the opportunity to fall out fast enough, by the effect of gravity and after having been cut from the ground. 'Work, to avoid the stubborn slide when the latter makes its following advance stroke, it is advantageous to use means by which the cut nails are necessarily spaced from the path followed by the stubborn slide. This ejection makes it possible to obtain that the cut nails are thus separated immediately after cutting.
To obtain this desirable result, recourse is had to the device clearly visible in FIGS. 16 and 17 and comprising a lever 166 which can turn around a pivot 167 carried by the frame and which supports a roller 168 coming into contact with a cam 169 wedged on the crank shaft. The upper end of the lever 166 is articulated, at 170, to a rod 171, which is placed longitudinally with respect to the machine and which passes through a perforated console <B> 172 </B> mounted on the cover 20. A collar 173 is fixed on the rod 171 and a spring 174 is interposed between the collar and the console 172 to urge the lever 166 in the indirect direction to keep the roller 168 in contact with the cam <B> 169. </B>
An arm 175 is hinged to the front end of rod 171 and the lower end of arm 175 is attached to the right end of a cross shaft 176. The other end of shaft 176 is at the bottom. above the header slide and carries two flat and longitudinal arms 177 whose outer ends carry a vertical tube 178 containing a plunger 179. The tube support <B> 178 </B> includes a block 300 which can pivot, at 301, at the ends. outer ends of the flat arm 177. A shoulder 302 is fixed to the tube 178 and the latter is biased downwardly into the pivoting block 300 by a spring 181 which is wound around a shaft 303 carried by a block 304 fixed in 305 to the transverse con sole which supports the shaft 176.
As the axis of the shaft 303 is established vertically above the shaft 176 and is located slightly in front of the latter, the spring 181 in fact completes an articulated parallelogram which guides the assembly formed. by the plunger <B> 179 </B> and the tube 178. As the tube 178 is biased downward by the spring <B> 181 </B> and as the plunger 179, housed in the tube 178, is biased downwards by a helical spring <B> 180 </B> engaged in the tube, the nail ejector is able to expel nails having different dimensions and hardnesses and which therefore oppose a variable resistance to the ejection .
As lever 166 oscillates under the control of cam 169, tube 178 is raised and lowered relative to the horizontal path followed by the header slide. As seen in fig. 16, the cam 169 moves the tube 178 away from the path followed by the punch 17a of the slider during the formation of the head. When the header slide moves back and when the work advances until it occupies its cutting position (fig. 10), the spring 174 forces the arms <B> 177 </B> and the tube 178 which they support to lower. plunger 179 until it comes into contact with the nail to be cut.
In this position, the mounting of the spring 180 of the plunger is such that energy is accumulated in said res out, so that the plunger 179 urges the nail down before the nail is cut. As a result, as soon as the nail is detached by the knives 65, the nail is positively projected downwards by the plunger 179 as an arrow is chased by a bow. The cam and lever device is such that the plunger 179 reverses as soon as the nail has moved away from the path followed by the stubborn slide and the latter can advance to form the head of the next nail.
To be sure that bits of metal, shavings and scale formed during nail fabrication are prevented from entering bearings, bearings and supports or between other fitted and moving parts of the machine, intervene means which surround and protect these parts at the places where these particles are produced. Figs. 14 and 15 show, more particularly, a fixed shield 182 placed transversely with respect to the machine and covering the cover 20. An additional shield 183 is connected, by a hinge 184, to the left side of the machine near the die holder .
The part 185 of this shield 183 is curved at right angles to the main part of the latter and its upper part 186, forming a cover, is hinged to the upper edge of the shield 183 so that the shield, consisting of several parts, can be brought to its closed position, shown in fig. 1. When it is closed, the vertical edge of the shield 183 abuts, by its rim 182a, against the fixed shield 182. The horizontal edge of the cover 186 rests against the vertical face of the plate 60 of the die holder and the lower edge of shield 183 fits against the frame to prevent bits of metal or chips from escaping from the machine at this location.
We see in fig. 13 and 14 that a pi voting shield 187 surrounds the nail ejector mechanism and thus prevents bits of metal from being expelled at this point from the machine.
To the right of the die holder is established a swivel shield <B> 188 </B> with a hinged cover 189 and a lateral and integral part 190. The shield 188 is mounted, by a hinge 191, on the frame and can be closed to prevent the escape of metal ends and the like on this side of the machine. Each knife holder arm carries an elastic screen which extends vertically along the face of this arm which is adjacent to the die holder. In the arm 27 is formed a vertical groove in which is housed an elastic plate 192, the free edge of which rests on the inclined lateral face <B> 193 </B> of the plate 60. A similar plate 194 is mounted on the arm. knife holder 28 and is supported on the face 195 of the plate 61.
The elastic plates 192 and 194 adapt to the shape of the faces 193 and 195 during the oscillating movements of the arms 27 and 28 by preventing the expulsion of the metal ends around the knife holder arms during the operation of the machine. Those skilled in the art will appreciate the advantages obtained in preventing shells and other bits of metal from escaping to damage bearings, necks and wedges in moving parts of the machine.
It follows from the foregoing that when the shields 187 and 188 are closed, the organs used for cutting and forming the heads of the nails are surrounded on all sides except towards the bottom where the exit of the nails, the shavings and ends is made. metal being directed towards a discharge passage and being evacuated out of the machine below the level where the head slide is driven by an alternating movement. A screen or the like can be placed at the bottom of the discharge corridor so that the fine shavings and metal ends can then feel falling into a drawer 5a (fig. 1) while the nails are discharged, above the screen, into the debtor corridor 7.
The detailed description of the machine shows that one half of the cycle or one rotation of the crank shaft at an angle of 180 occurs between the formation of the nail head and the cutting of the finished nail. This results in a movement of the slide, as short as possible, to make a nail having a maximum length determined for the reason that the punch, which forms the head, is at its rear dead center and is moved as far as possible from the door. -matrices, when the nail is detached and ejected.
The sudden tilting device, used to actuate the cut-off mechanism, avoids the use of cams and springs which limit, in a detrimental manner, the total operating speed of the machine. The device in question allows the use of a more efficient nail ejector mechanism, this mechanism being able to be actuated by a rotating cam at a time of the machine cycle when the stubborn slide is at its rear dead center and where a maximum gap exists between the gripping dies and the header ram punch. Another advantage,
resulting from the control by a tilting mechanism of the knife-holder arms, lies in the fact that the knives move with a minimum amplitude, the aforesaid arms being as far apart as possible when the stubborn slide is at its point dead before. The hard tilting mechanism is constructed in such a way that the knives move at a relatively slow speed compared to that of the total movement of the arms which support them when these knives come into contact with the work, which reduces the impacts on the structure and thus increases their useful life.
The control by a sharp tilting mechanism of the knives allows the use of stops which prevent the knives from exceeding their desired final position and it prevents one knife from coming into contact with the other after the nail is cut. It has been found that by operating the knives in this manner and preventing impact to the work and the knives, tungsten carbide knives can be used in a machine operating at high speed.
The particular header slide and the particular control mechanism of the knives impose certain limitations with regard to the adjustment over time and the operation of the device comprising the gripping dies. These must, of course, be spread sufficiently so that they can feel the burrs which are on the underside of the nail head before the stroke, by which the advancement of the work is obtained, begins.
The cam, which controls these dies, must move at an angle corresponding to about 20% of a full turn of the crankshaft and if a faster die spacing is to be obtained, a more powerful spring. is necessary to keep the roller in contact with the cam, which affects the life of the roller and its support. When bringing the dies together, the work should be gripped before the knives touch the wire so that the tip of the cut nail is not off-center. For the device as described, the lever 84, which controls the gripping, compresses the spring 86 and the clamping pressure acts on the wire so that a significant impact does not occur on the roller 87 and the cam. .
As a result, about 10% of a full turn of the cam is sufficient to clear the dies after the feed movement is stopped and parting begins.
As only half of the machine cycle takes place during the formation of the nail head and the cutting of the nail, it is necessary, during a half-turn of the crankshaft, to move aside the dies of the nail. gripping, to feed the wire a suitable length, to form these dies and to cut the nail. During this half-turn of the crankshaft, severe limitation is imposed on the feed mechanism because of the speed at which it must operate. The advancement of the work takes place during the period which begins after the dies are spread enough to be cleared from the burrs formed on the underside of the nail head and before the time when the dies grip the wire before the start of cutting.
The end of the advance, over a length corresponding to that of the nail, must always occur at the same point of the cycle, as a function of time, of the machine because a premature termination of the advance stroke, in relation to the closing the gripping dies, would allow the work to go back with the feed carriage. If the end of the feed movement is delayed with respect to the closing of the gripping dies, bending of the wire occurs between the carriage and the dies.
In the feed mechanism in question, the wire advances a desired length, and this mechanism is arranged, with respect to the gripping dies, the header slide and the cutting mechanism, such that a total operating speed , for example greater than that for which the production of more than 1000 nails per minute is obtained, can be achieved. The progress of the work, during a rotation of about 100 of the crank shaft, allows the gripping dies to be separated after the formation of the head, the advancement of the thread over a desired length, the closing jaws and die cutting of the nail, all for half of a full turn of the crankshaft.
