Method for tapping nuts and apparatus for carrying out this method. The present invention relates to a method for threading nuts and to an apparatus for carrying out this method. Its purpose is to make it possible to obtain:
the most complete precision, the tapping of nuts with conical or spherical head with the same ease and the same precision as the nuts with square head, the elimination of breakages of the tab and the machine and consequently the elimination stoppages in the operation of the latter, stoppages which drop the yield based on the maximum speed of the machine.
To achieve these goals, the threading process according to the invention is carried out so that the tool acts resiliently on the nut and that the normal clearance of the nut from the tap depends on the depth of the thread. 'reached by the tapping tool.
The apparatus for carrying out this method comprises a tapping tool having a: fixed axis and a reciprocating nut holder head, said head being moved towards the tool in an elastic manner. and removed from said tool in a constrained manner. In the drawing, given by way of example: FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of the machine; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section; .
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken sg # îsiblemerït along line 4--4 of fg: 5; Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the part of the mechanism shown in FIG. 4; Fig. 6 is a dirty transverse vertical section taken substantially along line 6-6 of FIG. 7; .
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal vertical section of the part of the apparatus which is shown at. cross section in fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a cross section taken substantially along line 8-8 of FIG. 1; Fig. 9 is a plan view of a cam and a pusher.
The apparatus shown comprises a frame 10 which can be fixed plumb (by means not shown) on the ground or on any base. At its front end, the frame 10 carries, in an elevated position, a bucket 11 which contains the liquid (oil or other), the nuts of which are sprayed on while the appliance is running. The rear end of the frame located behind this bucket has a shoulder on which is bolted a base 12 which supports the drive mechanism and has substantially the shape of a U.
Longitudinal bearings 13 and 14 arranged in the ends of the opposite branches of the U support support the main shaft 15 of the apparatus by means of a series of sleeves which the we will now describe. In the outer end of this main shaft 15 is housed a mandrel 16 whose axis is maintained in the extension of that of the tap 17.
This mandrel can be of any type allowing easy removal of the tap. This end of the shaft rotates in the sleeve 18 which cannot rotate in the bearing 14 by virtue of a screw 19 which passes through the body of the bearing and whose rear end projects beyond the bearing. On the rear end of the shaft can turn a transmission pulley 20, the direction of rotation of which is indicated by the arrow in FIG. 2; on the opposite end of the shaft 15 is keyed a sleeve 21 which rotates with the shaft.
The sleeve 21, in turn, rotates in a sleeve 22 which, like the sleeve 18, is fitted inside the bearing 13 and cannot rotate in the latter because of the screw 23. The front end of the bearing. man chon 21 extends forward. On this pro longement is mounted, so as to be able to rotate, a transmission pulley 24 which a belt (not shown) constantly drives in the opposite direction to the pulley 20, as shown by the arrow in FIG. 2. The pulleys 20 and 24 may be driven by any suitable motor placed inside the lower part of the frame 10.
The anterior end of the sleeve 21 also extends forward and beyond the anterior end of the sleeve 22, but without going as far as the adjacent end of the sleeve 18. On the end of the sleeve 21 is keyed , by means of a device 25, an internal conical clutch pulley 26. This pulley 26 has, on its periphery, conical clutch surfaces 27 and 28. The transmission pulleys 20 and 24 have on the internal face of their rim, complementary clutch surfaces 29 and 30 respectively.
The mechanism is arranged so that if the coupling member 26 is pushed towards the rear of the machine, i.e. to the left of the drawing, the clutch surfaces 28 and 30 get stuck. 'one over the other, and shaft 15, as well as tap 17, are driven to the right, looking at the tap; when the pulley 26 is moved forward, the friction of the surfaces 27 and 29 drives the tap to the left. The pulley 26 is passed from one of the positions in question to the other by moving the shaft 15.
To facilitate this movement, the shaft carries a shoulder 31 which rests on the hub of the movable pulley 26; in turn, the sleeve 21, disposed on the other end of the shaft, is provided with a shoulder 32 which can rest against the opposite side of the pulley 26. Thanks to this arrangement, when the shaft 15 is pushed backwards, the pulley 26 engages for a movement to the right, while, if the shaft is dragged forward by its front end with the sleeve 21, the shoulder 32 moves the coupling pulley 26 forward so as to drive the tap to the left.
We will now describe the device which allows the shaft to drive the sleeve 21.
Inside the bucket 11, the mechanism which brings the nut is mounted on a base 33 bolted to the bottom of the bucket. This mechanism comprises a carriage 34 with longi tudinal reciprocating movement joined to the base 33 by a dovetail assembly 35. This carriage receives a continuous reciprocating movement of a cam 36 housed in the body of the socket 33. This cam is in contact with a pusher 37 joined to the head 34 by means of a stud 38. The cam and the stud are seen in plan in FIG. 9. The cam 36 is mounted on a vertical camshaft 39 driven by a helical wheel 40, itself driven by the lateral longitudinal shaft 41.
The latter is supported by bearings suitably arranged on the side of the machine, and is dragged by a belt (not shown) which passes over the transmission pulley 42. The shaft 41 is joined to the transmission pulley 42 by a keying which allows it to move longitudinally inside this pulley 42. The latter is maintained in a fixed position relative to the base 12, in any suitable manner, for example by means of retaining collars. At its anterior end, the shaft 41 is held against any longitudinal movement, relative to the base 33 which supports it; by means of collars 43 and 44 arranged at the outer ends of the bearings of the shaft.
The whole of the base 33 can slide on the plate 45 with a smooth dovetail neck, by means of which it is bolted to the bottom of the auger. A screw 46, screwed into the base 47 of the base 33 is connected by means of a swivel 48 to the wall of the bucket 11. This screw is provided with a square head 49 which allows it to be rotated, which has the effect of moving forward the base 33 as well as all the mechanisms connected to the latter and to freely and completely open the access of the tap 17 and the mandrel 16.
The rear end of the slider 34 has a vertical feed surface 50 and a vertical extension 51 carrying forked arms 52 spaced radially and projecting inwardly. On the head of the slider are fixed two columns 53, the upper ends of which support a bridge 54. These columns are arranged vertically and leave a certain transverse distance between them. A nut magazine 55 is suspended from the bridge 54 by means of the central screw 56 so as to be able to oscillate.
The screw 56 has a knurled head, a shank with shoulder, passing through the body of the bridge, and a threaded end penetrating into a support 57, which in turn. is fixed by bolts 58 to the body of the magazine 55. The magazine 55 is thus suspended from the screw 56 and can, in the zone of action of the tap 17, receive a transverse lateral displacement which depends on the difference existing between its width and distance between the internal faces of the arms 52. The magazine 55 in question comprises a plate 59 which constitutes the main part thereof and two alignment rails 60 in hardened steel bolted or screwed on the internal face of the plate 59.
In the internal face of the plate 59 is formed a groove 61 (fig. 8), there whose depth is appreciably equal to that of the spherical or conical head 62 of the nut, and whose depth width is substantially greater than the diameter of the face of this same nut. The gui- rails. dage 60 protrude beyond the edges of the groove, sy metrically with respect to the plane of symmetry of the device (designated by 63); they are separated from each other by a distance substantially equal to the transverse dimension 64 of the heads of the nut.
Thanks to this device, the nuts slide into the magazine from the top of the latter, and slide down, their anterior ends substantially touching the bottom of the groove, tan say that their diametrically opposed sides 64 are in contact with the rails guide 60. These have exact dimensions and alignment. The rails whose edges are in contact with the sides are also in contact by their sides 65 with the transversely plane shoulder formed on the nut between the spherical or conical surface 62 and the sides 64.
If the shoulder 66 of the nut is pressed with force against the carefully machined faces 65, the axis of the nut will be parallel to the axis of the tap 17 since the faces 65 are located in a strictly perpendicular plane. to the axis of the tap 17. The lower end of the magazine 55 is provided with a support 67 (fig. 3 and 7) fixed to the body of the magazine in the same way as the support 57. The two supports 57 and 67 have their outer faces which are exactly parallel to each other and parallel to the faces 65 of the guide rails 60.
These faces bear against the face of the support bridge 54 which is machined in the same way and against the face 50 of the slide 34, the relative dimensions of these parts being determined so that the plane of the alignment face 65 is strictly transverse. At its lower end the magazine is held against any movement tending to move it away, in the direction of the axis, from its transversely adjusted position, by retaining blocks 68 fixed in a removable manner on the ends. exterior of the oven 52.
At the lower end of the magazine 55, part 59 of the latter is provided with an orifice 69 of substantially circular shape which surrounds the axis 70 of the machine as clearly shown in FIGS. 6 and 7. The tap 17 can pass through the hole in question to work a nut held inside the magazine. The nuts cannot fall from the bottom of the magazine and are successively released thanks to a click mechanism comprising the group of members shown in figs. 4 and 5.
71 designates a click mounted on a pivot 72 in a groove 73 formed in the pro longement 74 (located on the left looking from the front) which is part of a pair of protrusions 74 and 75 starting from the slide 34 downwards .
This .déclic is provided with a spout 76 which can be placed in line with the spherical and conical faces 62 of the series of nuts held in the magazine 55, so as to hold (thanks to its contact with the face of the lowest nut) the whole series of nuts (fig. 3, 6 and 7) and to prevent the latter from being pulled by their own weight through towards the lower end of the support 55, which is opened. 'The click 71 can be moved away from this position, outwardly, by means of a spring 77 which bears on the same side of the pivot 72 as the spout 76. But it is normally held by the trigger 78 in the in position. which the spout 76 re holds the nuts.
The trigger 78 is mounted on a pivot 79 disposed in a groove 80 of the frame, and its front end advances beyond the end of the finger 71 which carries a shoulder so that the trigger cannot be moved inward, beyond the end bearing a shoulder, under the action of its retaining spring 81, which, like the spring 77, is housed in the frame 74. At its internal end the trigger is provided with a lateral projection 82 located on the path of the lower side of the head 83 of an adjustable micrometric screw 8.1 screwed into the fixed side 85 of the base 33. A stop screw 86 keeps the screw 84 adjusted.
Each time the slider 34 is moved rearward a sufficient distance for the head 83 to touch the protrusion of the trigger 78, the click is released and the nose 76 is moved away from the path followed by the nuts in the magazine, and the lowest nut at least can fall off. It will be noted that this release of the nut takes place in a substantially instantaneous manner, in a sufficiently small time interval for gravity to also advance all the parts of the nut and for the latter to fall freely. the lower end of the store.
The dropping of nuts other than the lower nuts is prevented, because when the slider or head 34 moves inwardly, the tap 17 engages the second nut in the series from the bottom. As head 34 moves outward, the tap comes out of the nut in which it is engaged, but before it is fully released, the click 71 is returned into place on the trigger 68 by the thrust exerted on it. its outer end 86 by a rap pel rod 87. This is housed in the side 85 of the base 33 below the contact screw 84, and is elastically pushed, without its support, by a coil spring 88.
In this way, when the tap 17 is completely out of the worked nut, the latter falls to the lowest point of the vacuum limited by the nose 76 of the click and the other nuts in the magazine follow it; the next nut then comes to occupy its working position in the axis of the machine. If the head 34, in its backward movement were to exceed its normal stopping point after the click 76 has been put in place, the shock would be absorbed by the elastic return bar 87, the movement of the nozzle 76 to beyond the position that it must occupy, on the line of the spherical faces 61 of the nuts, being caught by the. stop of the body 89 of the click against the wall 90 of the cavity 73 in which the click is mounted.
The alignment of the threading nut is ensured by the contact, with its spherical or conical face 62, of the three fingers 91 of the fixing and alignment jaw 92, which are arranged concentrically. This jaw which surrounds the tap 17 is supported, between the mandrel 16 and the lower end of the magazine 55, by two alignment rods 93 mounted in paths 94 located on the front of the base 12 parallel to the axis 70 of the machine, so that the fingers 91 are located on a circumference having its center on the axis in question. The fingers 91 are formed on a ring 95 of hardened steel, fixed to the center of the jaw 92.
The ends of the fingers that grip the nut are portions. of a cone whose axis coincides with the axis 70 of the machine and whose opening is determined so that the contact surface is tan gente to the spherical or conical head 62, the contact line being a circumference located between the anterior and posterior edges of the key zone the spherical or conical face 62.
In these conditions; when the alignment jaw 92 and the feed head 34 approach each other, alignment is provided by the three fingers 91 and the center of the spherical face 62 is immediately placed on the axis 70 of the device; moreover, under the effect of an additional pressure, the shoulder 66 comes to bear against the exactly transverse alignment surfaces 65 of the magazine rails and the axis of the nut then coincides with the axis 70 of the magazine. the apparatus, which is the same as the axis of the tap 17. As long as the parts in question remain pressed against each other, the alignment is effectively maintained.
And this alignment remains despite the torsion exerted on the nut by. the tap, because the forces which ensure alignment are applied concentrically and the rotation of the nut is prevented by the contact of the rails 60 with the faces 64.
The jaw 92 responsible for aligning and holding the nut is itself normally held resiliently in its alignment and holding position (shown particularly in Fig. 1) by springs 96 The latter exert pressure on the jaw by means of pushers 97 which pass through lugs 98 arranged on the sides of the jaw.
The springs 96 are trapped between the ears 98 and the adjusting nuts 99 by which one. can adjust the tension which ensures the retention and alignment of the nut. The jaw 92 is maintained in this position throughout the movement of the head 34, except at the end of the return stroke of the latter when the tap 17 is completely out of the nut to be worked.
At this moment the posterior ends of the push buttons 97 come into contact with the anterior ends of adjustable fingers 100 which affect the shape of bolts screwed into blocks 101 situated "on the fixed base 33 of the apparatus. fingers in question, we can determine the instant -at- the holding and alignment mechanism will be released. Until then the nut, even released from the tap 17, cannot fall into its position. lowest tion on click 76.
Move. elastic of the head 34 towards the inside is caused by a coil spring 102 disposed in a housing 103 arranged in the axis 70 of the apparatus. The spring tension can be adjusted by means of an adjusting screw 105, the head 104 of which rests on the outer end of the spring. The adjustment screw 105 is screwed into a support arm 106, which is itself fixed to the outer wall of the base 3-3.
The cam 36, the shape and arrangement of which are shown in FIG. 9, moves head 34 in a constrained manner only in the course of the latter towards the outside, so as to allow its displacement towards the inside by the spring 102:
the thread nut is presented in an elastic way to the action of the thread. Thanks to this arrangement, the outward and rearward thrust exerted on the end of the shaft 15 (the thrust which results in engaging the transmission pulley 24 so as to actuate the tap and to per to put the latter to do its job) happens to be an elastic thrust which allows the tap to penetrate the nut at a speed which depends, therefore, on the pitch of the threaded threads.
In addition, if the tap comes to experience untimely resistance, the clutch surfaces 28, 30 of the clutch device slide over each other under the elastic pressure of the spring 102 and the parts are not moved. , neither twisted nor broken.
During the stroke of the head 34 outwardly, the tap, whether or not it has reached the bottom of the nut under the effect of the elastic force applied to it, is driven outwardly with the head 34. On the rear end of the shaft 15 is fixed a collar 106 '. A spring 107 is trapped between this collar and the rear end of the sleeve 21. When the shaft is driven outwardly, the spring 107 is compressed and itself resiliently supported on the sleeve 21 and on the coupling member 26 which is released from the transmission pulley 24.
Under the effect of an additional elastic pressure the coupling pulley 26 engages with the pulley 20 (which turns in the opposite direction to the pulley 24) thanks to the friction of the surfaces 27 and 29 and the tap 17 turns in the direction reverse. The tap is released from the threaded nut at the same time as the head 34 itself moves forward. The speed of tap retraction depends entirely on the pitch of the screw threads and the resistance encountered. Indeed, the coupling surfaces 27, 29 are supported on each other in an elastic manner by the pressure of the spring 107.
Under these conditions, neither poorly made adjustments, nor improper dimensions of parts, nor for any other cause can cause damage to the machine or to the workpiece during the tap removal operation.
Depending on whether the tap has reached the desired depth or has not reached this depth, the worked nut is released to make room for another or is subjected to repeated work until the thread has reached the depth wanted. The application. of this part of the process is done by adjusting the micrometric screw 83 so that it can hang the. trigger 78 and relinquish it only when head 34 has been moved inward by the elastic pressure of spring 102, far enough to bring tap 17 to exactly the desired depth.
When this adjustment is made, the trigger is not released until the depth in question has been reached. This depth can only be achieved when the tap has not experienced resistance attributable to the amount of material in the nut, to the foaming of the tap, to the presence of skins or to any other cause. As long as there is sufficient resistance to prevent the tap from reaching the desired depth, the tapping operation is repeated and the tool eventually reaches the desired depth.
The trigger 78 is then immediately released and, while the worked nut is still fully engaged on the tap, the lower nut is instantly released and falls freely from the machine. Then, when the tap is released from the completed nut, thanks to the movement of the head outwards, the nut in question comes to occupy the lower position limited by the return click 71 and the next nut in the series comes occupy the working position.
The precise and instantaneous release of the nut effectively prevents any malfunction of the release mechanism which could be due to the irregularity of the surface of the workpiece.
