<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
Ladite
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
poids 24.

<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>

The invention relates to bar feed devices in machine tools, such as, for example, revolver lathes, automatic or semi-automatic lathes, pointless grinding machines, etc.
The term “bar feed device” hereinafter denotes an apparatus of the type comprising, in combination, a base on which is mounted a long tube, - disposed horizontally, intended to receive and support a bar or rod intended to be transformed by a machine tool into manufactured articles produced successively; a thrust member capable of sliding axially in the tube and arranged so as to act on a suitable extract of the bar or supported rod; and means for imparting to the thrust member sufficient driving force to press on said end of the barri, or rod: '
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and push it forward in order to introduce it as needed in the machine tool.
In a particular embodiment of a device of this type, the thrust member is connected to a part passing through a longitudinal slot formed in the tube and able to slide along the latter; to this part is attached a flexible member which is subjected to the action of a weight of a predetermined value, the role of the weight being to produce, by means of the flexible member, the necessary pushing force forward.
- In a conventional bar advance device, the support is placed in the extension of the machine tool jointly with which it is to be used, and the front end of the bar or rod supported in the tube is brought into machine by a chuck. This mandrel is arranged to close on the bar or rod and grip it, and, when the front part thereof has been machined and detached to produce a manufactured part, said mandrel opens. following which the bar or rod advances again in the mandrel, under the action of the pushing member.
The main disadvantage of a bar feed device, constructed as hitherto, is that after a bar or rod has been made into manufactured parts and the push member has been pulled back, for example, against the action of a weight, up to its initial starting position, a new bar or rod must be introduced into the support tube by its front end and pushed in the axial direction into this tube . Due to the length of the tube of a bar advancing device, and also due to the length of the bar or rod which must be carried by this tube, this preliminary operation of introducing and pushing a such bar or rod in the tube requires
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
considerable place.
In fact, it is generally necessary, in practice, to leave for this purpose a relatively wide and free passage between the groups of machines, which wastes precious floor space. Quite apart from this reason, however carefully the lathes or other machine tools and their bar feeders have been arranged, the operation of inserting a new bar into any of the tubes bar advance is often a nuisance for another machine.,. to the point of temporarily interrupting production.
From the foregoing, it will also be appreciated that the introduction of a new bar or rod into a tube is an operation which wastes time.
An advance device of. bar, as has been constructed so far, must also necessarily include a flexible member, in the form of a cable of relatively great length, in one piece, which is not easy To manipulate.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved bar feed device in a general manner and studied with a view to overcoming the above drawbacks. In particular, the invention aims at saving space while at the same time facilitating the operation of introducing a new bar or rod into the tube.
In the improved bar feed device constituting the present invention, the tube is divided longitudinally into two parts which can be separated so as to open the tube on one side and means are provided for effecting the separation of said two. parts of the tube and 'to act at the same time on a new bar ou.tige arranged on an adjacent support in order to allow it to move laterally and to be introduced into the tube through the opening thereof.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the lower of the two superimposed parts of the tube is held and supported by a number of supports spaced apart and integral with the base of the bar feed device, while the upper part of the tube , movable relative to the other, is carried by levers interconnected by a shaft arranged so as to rotate in said supports.
To simultaneously rotate all the conjugate levers and thus raise the upper section of the tube in order to open the desired side thereof for the admission of a new bar or rod, all that would be necessary, in a simple device , would be to provide one of the levers with a handle easily accessible to the operator of the machine-tool. However, the tube is preferably opened automatically following the return of the thrust member to its initial starting position after total consumption of a bar or rod. To this end, a part is advantageously wedged on the lever conjugation shaft, so that it rotates with the latter, this part comprising a cam which is actuated by part of a sliding support carrying the member. thrust.
In this way, when the support each time approaches the end of its return stroke, or empty stroke, it acts by pushing the said part to the side and, thereby, turns the combined levers, in the direction which raises the part. upper.tube.
The thrust member can, -each time a bar or rod has been fully consumed, be returned to the original starting position, either by hand or automatically.
For. to make the invention more clearly understood and to facilitate its practical realization, .it is described below, by way of example, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings a particular form of construction of the bar feed device established according to l invention and comprising an organ

The same organs are de "signed by the same reference numbers on all the figures.
The tube placed horizontally and arranged to receive and support a bar or rod is designated by 1.
As will be seen more clearly in figs. 4 and 5, the tube is divided lengthwise into one part
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
upper and lower part 1b, upper part. The upper part can be separated (towards the top) from the lower part, so as to open the tube on one side. Of the two superimposed parts of the lower tube lb is held and carried by several spaced apart supports 2 forming part of the base of the bar feed device. The upper part of the tube 1a is on the other hand carried by spaced levers 3, rigidly wedged on a shaft 4 which connects them to one another and extends parallel to the axis of the bar-carrying tube 1; this shaft is mounted so as to be able to turn in bearings contained in the spaced supports 2.
As shown in figs. 1A, 1B, 4 and 5, these supports 2 each comprise a vertical bulge 5, suitably drilled, in which is fixed the upper end of a hanging steel rod 6, of circular section, constituting a part of 'a telescopic leg L, the base of the bar advancing device having a series of such legs. Each of the hanging rods 6 is externally threaded (see fig. 9) and can go up and down in a vertical hole 7 made in the lower part 8 in cast iron of the corresponding telescopic foot, 1. The cast iron parts 8 of the feet are provided at their lower ends with a flat sole 8a, intended to rest on the floor.
The open upper end of each lower part of the cast iron foot 8 supports a threaded nut 9 so that it can be screwed onto the external thread of the corresponding hanging rod 6. Accordingly by turning the nuts 9 in the proper direction; the hanging rods 6 can be raised or lowered in the vertical cast iron parts 8, in order to vary the useful length of the feet L and thus adjust the respective heights of the supports 2 relative to the ground.
By this means, the tube 1 can be brought into position
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
horizontal and in alignment with the machine chuck, furthermore, the 'upper' part of each lower part in cast iron 8 is slit in the vertical direction in
8b and carries ears 8c arranged so as to be tightened by "a tightening screw 10, intended to immobilize the cast iron part on 'the hanging rod 6 after adjustment., The thread of the rods 6, which are of a slightly lower gauge to that of the dies employed, makes it possible to give the outer teeth cut on these rods a flattened or truncated shape so that they are not liable to be easily damaged.
The rear parts of the supports 2 have their upper faces 2a (see figs, 4 and 6) sloping upwards and backwards. To these faces are fixed metal angles 11 which extend backwards to the- beyond the back of the supports 2, aligned with them and which are interconnected at their outer ends by a bracket 12 disposed longitudinally. The 'angles 11' connected together form an inclined rack which extends to the bar-carrying tube 1, cut longitudinally, and which is intended to support several bars or rods arranged one behind the other. . A few bars thus arranged are shown at 15 in FIGS. 4 and 6. The supports 2 are furthermore interconnected, at their lower ends, by a front rod 13.
Some of the supports of the right part of the apparatus are further connected by a rear rod 14 disposed at a certain distance from the front rod 13 and which is parallel thereto. There is also, forming part of the frame of the base of the device, a bar 16 of flat section, which is arranged in a vertical plane and short from end to end along the apparatus, above the horizontal tube 1, parallel to this and a little forward.
Bar 16 forms a
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
slide and a guide for a sliding support 17 serving to drive the pushing member 18 which, as explained above, can move axially inside the tube 1 to act on the appropriate end of the bar or rod 15 carried by said tube, so as to push the bar or rod forward and engage it in a machine tool.
The rear outer edge of the lower part .fixe-lb of the tube extends rearwardly, inclined so that its lower face is in a plane parallel to the inclined upper faces of the angles 11. Fixed to the underside of the tube. this outer edge 1c, there are spaced stops 19, the upper faces of which have a rebate intended to receive this edge. As seen in Figs. 4 and 6, the upper faces of the spaced stops 19, which are inclined forward, come flush with the lower edge of. the side opening 20 giving access to the bar holder tube 1.
There may advantageously be a stopper 19 resting on the angle iron 11 at each support 2 and other similar stops can be provided at points situated in the intervals between the supports. In any case the arrangement is such that each time the tube 1 is opened by pivoting the levers 3 forwards and thus lifting the upper part of the tube 1a, by means which will be described, - the bar or rod 15 which at this moment is the most vo.isine of the tube, projected upwards, automatically moves away from the rear faces of the stops 19 to arrive at the front, that is to say at the lowest part of the rack and can thus fall while rolling in the open tube,
the rest of the bars or - rods 15 then rolling down the rack to take up the space left free by the bar or rod deposited in the tube. That is, whenever a bar or rod 15 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
moved and becomes free to roll clam; when the tube is open, the next bar or rod in the series carried by the rack rolls up to contact with the rear faces of the stoppers 19, ready to be used when necessary. The inclined upper faces of these bumpers therefore constitute surfaces onto which a bar or rod can descend by rolling after having been projected upwards above the rack.
To operate this projection of a new bar or rod 15 and raise it one block to the position in which it will be free to roll sideways on the stops 19 to enter the open tube 1, the conjugate levers for opening the tube 3 are provided with arms 3a directed towards the rear (see FIG. 4) and which carry projection members 21 disposed immediately below the first bar or rod 15 carried by the rack.
In this way, each time you turn the; 3 levers
3 forward to open the tube 1, the arms 3a will rise to raise the projection members 21 and thus move the bar or rod concerned. To allow the bar feed device, established according to the According to the invention, to operate with bars or rods of different diameters, or diametral dimensions, the projection members 21 are adjustable along the rearwardly directed arms 3a. To this end, each member 21 is longitudinally grooved in 21apour received the rod of a screw or. bolt 22, used to fix it on the arm.
Consequently, the position of the projection members forward or backward can be adjusted correctly with respect to the axis of the bar or rod which is in the first row on the inclined rack. So, as it can sometimes happen, the organs have to be moved end to front. projection 21 for
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
Acting on bars or rods of relatively small diameters, these parts can pass freely in the spaces or intervals between the stops 19.
As an alternative to the arrangement of the separated spaced stops 19, it is also possible to use a single, i.e. common, stopper having the form of a bar of flattened section and constituting a bridge extending into the longitudinal direction, perpendicular to the supports
2. In this variant, the rear outer edge of the single stopper can be indented at suitable intervals to allow the projection members to pass over it whenever they have to do so.
It should be clearly understood that even when the bar holder tube 1 is closed, as shown in figs. 4 and 6, there will always be left in this tube (at 20) a longitudinal slot through which passes a relatively thin part 17a of the support 17 of the pushing member 18, which support plays, as will be seen from account, the role of a part driving the thrust member. If according to a preferred arrangement and as shown, this slot is provided on the rear side of the tube 1, that is to say on the side closest to the stops 19, most of the support 17, adjacent to its thin part '17a, will first be directed upwards, then forwards so as to pass above and in front of said tube.
To move support 17 ,; guided by the slide 16, from the left end to the right end of the bar advance device, in order to bring the working end 18a of the pushing member 18 to exert a constant pressure and continues on the desired end of a bar or rod to be engaged in a machine, there is provided an endless chain 23 arranged to advance under the action of weights 24. Said
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
chain, which can advantageously be of the roller type, passes, on the left side of the base of the apparatus, around a \ ..; chain sprocket 25 and on the right side of the base around another chain wheel 26 of the same diameter.
The roud 25 is rigidly wedged on a short shaft 27 mounted so as to rotate freely in bearings provided in the spaced arms 28a of a forked or bifurcated support 28 and fixed to the outer face of the adjacent support 2. The wheel 26 is for its part rigidly wedged on a shaft 29 carried by bearings provided in the arms 30 of another support 31, which is mounted on the front and rear rods 13 and 14 and is adjustable in position along -cestiges.
For the adjustment of the tension of the chain 23 which actuates the pushing member, the support 31 carries a short tig, e 32 adjustable longitudinally and whose free end, that is to say, re outer, is arranged to abut against the opposite face of the nearest support 2 (see fig. 5). In this way, by adjusting the position of the support 31 longitudinally along the bars 13 and 14 and by making a suitable adjustment of the short rod 32 passing through the aforesaid support, all the slack in the support can be taken up. chain 23. As 1-'indicated in fig. 5, the support 17 of the pushing member is connected to said chain by means of an attachment plate 33.
Also fixed rigidly on the shaft 27, between the arms 28a of the support 28 / there is a weight winch pinion 34 on which is passed a chain 35 stretched by un.poids. As shown in fig. 3, this chain 35 Goes around the. lower part of a pinion 36 from which the weights 24 are suspended, then rises over a short length. to be anchored to a fixed anchor bolt 37. We can vary the value of the load sliding on the pinion 34 and by..suite also on the toothed wheel 25 by changing the
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
weight 24.
Referring to fig. 4 it will be seen that the weight-carrying pinion 36 is mounted on a yoke 38 from which is suspended a rod 39 at the lower end of which is provided a nut 40 serving to support a washer 41.
Around the rod 39 is a tube 42 to the upper part of which is welded a washer 43 through which the rod 39 passes, this tube carrying a collar 44 on the outside at its lower part. A compression spring 45 surrounding the hanging rod 39 is interposed. between the lower face of the washer 43 and the upper face of the washer 41. The superimposed weights 24 are supported by the collar 44 and threaded onto the tube 42. There is therefore an elastic connection between the yoke 38 and the load and like the clevis is retained, the weights 24 and the tube 42 which carries them compress the spring 45. In this way the inertia of the downward weights is absorbed.
At the extreme right of the apparatus, seen from the front, there is a support 2 'which connects between them the rods 13 and 14 and'. The .bar 16 and in this support is mounted a bush guide 46 , arranged coaxially with the mandrel 47 (fig.5) of the machine tool in which the bars ou'tiges 45 must be engaged. An engaging bar or rod passes through this sleeve.
To center a bar or rod of diameter smaller than the core of the sectioned bar-holder tube 1, and to facilitate the action, on the rear end of said bar or rod, of the working end 18a of 1} ¯ thrust member 18, this member is provided with a "false nose" 48 whose front face is hollowed out in a cone 48a, as can be seen more clearly in FIG. 8.when the thrust member 18 is moved from left to right by the chain 23 driven by the weights., The false nose 48 (which embraces the rear end

The opposite end, that is to say the tail, of this control rod can slide in the support 17 and carries a stop collar 51, the object of which will be described.
A spring latch 53 is pivotally mounted at 52 on the support 17; the working end of this lock is normally engaged in a notch formed in the control rod 50. A cam 54 fixed to the rear face of the guide bar (slide) 16 is arranged so as to act, at the desired point of a working course of the thrust member 18, on the latch 53 and rotates it, against the action of the spring, in order to separate the false nose 48 from the thrust member.
Conversely, when this organ has automatically returned to its initial starting position in the manner

which will be described below, before advancing a new bar or rod, the stop collar 51 comes into contact with a stop 55 to ensure the engagement of the latch 53 in the notch of the rod. , order'50; in this way, the re-coupling of the false nose to the thrust member is ensured.
For convenience of illustration, the support 17 of the thrust member 18, the false nose 48 and the corresponding mechanism are shown at both ends of the apparatus.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
In real practice, of course, and since there is only one pushing organ, it cannot be dormant; at both ends.
To drive the chain in the opposite direction to that in which it is actuated by the weights 24 and thus return the thrust member 18 to its initial starting position at the left end of the apparatus, before this. As a new bar or rod can roll in the bar-holder tube 1, there is provided a small electric motor 56 mounted on a support 57.
At the suitable end of the motor shaft is attached a chain sprocket 58 on which engages an endless chain 59, arranged to pass also around a toothed wheel 60, driven by the motor and wedged on the front end of shaft 27., When the thrust member 18 performs a working stroke from left to right, the motor is switched off, but when this stroke is completed a limit switch 61 is automatically actuated. - only, which starts the engine and thus returns the thrust member from right to left.
This result is obtained as follows:
At the desired instant, the support 17 of the thrust member, during its movement, comes into contact with a cam 62 mounted on a rod 63 connecting two short oscillating arms 64 (see Figs. 5 and 6). These arms pivot 'on supports 65 held on the fixed guide bar'16. The oscillating link 63 also carries a cam 66 arranged in such a way that when said link is moved to the right (as a consequence of the contact of the pusher support 17 with the cam 62) it operates the limit switch. 61 and starts the engine 56. Reference numeral 67 indicates a fixed support for the switch 61.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
To prevent a new bar or rod 15 from inadvertently moving through the guide sleeve 46 to the rear of the mandrel, there is provided at the right end of the apparatus a tilting stopper 68 mounted at pivot on the rear rod 14 and which, when released, swings in front of the entry of said bush and closes it. Thus when a new bar or rod 15 comes into contact with the tilting stopper 68 which is in this position, it is stopped and cannot advance and enter the machine until this stopper has been raised by hand. by means of a handle 69 ,, to discover the entrance of the guide sleeve 46.
This allows the operator to exercise manual control over the advance movement of a new bar or rod in the machine by means of a handwheel 70 wedged on the forward end of the shaft 29. Each time the handle 69 raises the tilting stopper 68 to open the socket, this stopper is hooked automatically and is retained by a locking arm 71. As, as can be seen in FIG. 5, this locking arm is integral with the swing arm 64 on the right, it follows that when the rod 63 moves to operate the limit switch 61, said arm will also be raised and release the stopper 68 which will cause it to switch to the. down and close the guide sleeve 46.
When the motor 56, has moved the chain 23 a sufficient distance to return the thrust member 18 'to. its starting positioni it is automatically switched off by the. operation of another limit switch, stroke 72 and at the same time the shaft 4 rotates to move the levers 3 forward and thus raise the upper part la of the tube, which opens the bar-holder tube 1 cuts longitudinally. As explained above, when the levers 3 are moved forward.
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
for this purpose, the arms 3a will also rotate upwards to raise the projection parts 21, with the result that a new bar or rod 15 will be thrown, roll on the inclined upper faces of the stops 19 and enter the open tube 1. To obtain this result, there is, rigidly connected to the shaft 4, by means of
EMI16.1
short arms 73a, a bar 73 extending longitudiiialefflent, which can rotate with said rod and serves as a support for a cam 74 which has an inclined edge 74a intended to be attacked by a roller 75 mounted on the support member. push 17.
Consequently, when the support 17 reaches a position corresponding to the starting position of the pushing member 18 or approaching it, the roller 75, acting on the cam 74, pushes the cam support bar 73 to the side. and thus rotates the shaft 4 in the direction which opens the tube 1. At the same time a lever 76, also integral with the shaft 4 and carrying an inclined ramp cam 76a (fig. 4), acts on the switch. at the end of travel 72 - and makes it work, which puts the motor 56 off.
In order to stop the return movement of the thrust member 18, when the motor is switched off, a matching stopper 77 is provided. This stopper which is shown freezes 7 has the shape of a fork-shaped piece arranged at the same time. horse on the-barrēguide, along which it can slide over a limited length. Besides, there is an arm come in one piece with the elastic stopper 77, which includes the previously mentioned stopper 55! capable of co-operating with the stop collar 51. Above the matching stopper 77 is a cylindrical part 77a which is fixed in the left end of a spring damper tube 78 disposed horizontally.

16. The stop nut 81 is normally in contact with a plug 84 which serves to seal off the right end of cylinder 78. Around the rod 80 is wound a compression spring. $ 5 which is interposed between the back. piston
79 and the inside face of the plug 84. A small air release hole 86 is made in the closed end of the cylindrical upper part 77a of the stopper 77.
The arrangement is therefore such that when the support of the thrust member 17 comes into contact with the stopper 77 and is stopped by it, the latter yields to absorb the shock, this elasticity resulting from the fact that the tube 78 is pulled along the rod 80 against Inaction of the spring 85. The reaction of the spring is damped by the piston
79 braked by air.
Fig. 3 shows that the left end of the guide bar 16 is anchored to a chain guard shown in phantom dotted lines at 87.
It will be appreciated that while in the particular example described here, the support 17 and the thrust member
18 which it carries, are returned automatically by electric means, it is also possible to use, if desired, for the same purpose a hydraulic or pneumatic device.
In short, the succession of operations which take place when the helm feed device shown is operated is as follows:
Suppose a bar or rod has just been fully used. The arrival of the pushing member 18 at the right end of the apparatus has the result not only of releasing the stopper 68 from the position where it leaves the passage 'open and of allowing it to come to rest on said passage. organ, but also to actuate the limit switch 61, which starts the engine 56.
The

motor then quickly returns the thrust member to the left end of the device; as a result the bar holder tube 1 opens to allow a new bar. roll down the inclined rack and enter the tube; the limit switch 72 is actuated and stops the engine. - The thrust member is stopped by the elastic stopper 77 then immediately begins to move again to the right under the action of the weights 24. The bu - 'tilting roof 68, which previously came into the closed position when the push member has withdrawn, now limits the advance movement of the new rod bar.
The driver, having in the meantime taken out of the chuck the. short remaining stretch of old bar or rod, brings back. the tilting stopper 68 in the open position by raising the handle 69, .and can then, using the handwheel 70, adjust the entry movement of the bar or rod into the chuck of the machine tool.
In a simplified form of the apparatus, the automatic return device, from the push member to its initial starting position, is omitted and the support of the push member is provided with a button or button. 'a handle which allows it to be brought back by hand after total consumption of a bar or rod. It is also possible, if desired, to arrange things so that the return of this member to its starting position is obtained by means of a crank turned by the driver.
But in a fully automatic version of the device according to the invention the tilting stopper 68 and the flywheel 70 are omitted and any suitable automatic means are provided for directly advancing a bar or rod into the mandrel. of the machine. Such means can be operated and controlled electrically, hydraulically, pneumatically or in any other way.

The base of the bar feeder is:
It is also provided, preferably below the bar-carrying tube 1, with supports intended to receive a supply of bars or rods, the suitable number of which is transferred to the inclined rack when the circumstances require.
Also within the scope of the invention the use, instead of an inclined rack, of a store arranged vertically to receive a series of bars or superimposed rods, means being provided to release the bar from the store. lowest rod and place it on the stops 19 each time the bar holder tube 1 opens.
