Device indicating the level of a liquid.
The present invention relates to a device for indicating the level of a liquid, in particular the level of the benzine in a motorcycle tank. This device is characterized in that it comprises a tube having at least one longitudinal slot, intended to be immersed in the liquid, a float arranged in said tube and having at least one lug engaged in said longitudinal slot, a central cylindrical member mounted rotafively in the ends of the tube and having a helical ramp cooperating with said float, the whole being arranged in such a way that a reetilinear sliding movement of the float due to a variation in the level of the liquid causes the rotation of said cylindrical member,
this rotation being transmitted to an indicator needle capable of being moved opposite a graduated scale.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device forming the subject of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, partially in section, of this device.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, on a larger scale, through line 9 = 2 of FIG. 1.
The indicator device shown is mounted on a gasoline tank 1 of a motorcycle, for example. It comprises a tube 2 of circular section screwed by its upper end into a threaded hole 3 made in the upper part of the tank, a plug 2 'being screwed into the lower end of the tube 2. This tube also has two slots diametrically opposed longitudinal 4, 4 '. A ring-shaped float 5 is disposed inside the tube 2 and carries two lugs 6, 6 'engaged in the slots 4, 4' respectively.
These lugs are fixed on the float after the latter has been introduced into the tube 2. For this purpose, they are formed by cylindrical screws, screwed into an outer ring 7 made of a light metal such as a . luminium, for example, surrounding a body 8 made of a material of specific weight substantially lower than that of the liquid with which it comes into contact, for example agglomerated cork.
The float further comprises an inner ring 9 also made of light metal. One could also provide a float consisting of a hollow body. A cylindrical member or drum 10 is pivoted centrally at both ends of the tube 2 and comprises a helical groove; ale 11 in which is engaged a lug 12 integral with the inner ring 9 of the float (see FIG. 2). The stopper 2 'serves as a slider for a lower pivot 13 of the cylindrical member 10.
The upper pivot 13 'of the drum 10 sealingly passes through a pad 14 mounted in the upper end of the tube 2, an indicator needle 15 being fixed to said pivot and capable of being moved opposite a graduated scale under a cover transparent protective cover not shown.
Instead of a helioldale groove 11, the drum 10 could carry a helical rib with which the lug 12 would come into contact.
The operation of the indicating device described is as follows:
By following the fluctuations of the level u of the liquid contained in the reservoir, the float 5 moves in a rectilinear sliding movement inside the tube 2 guided by the lugs 6, 6 'cooperating with the slots 4 and 4'.
The lug 12 engaged in the helical groove 11 moves with the float and thus causes the rotation of the drum 10. The needle 15, the angular displacement of which is the same as that of the drum 10, indicates on the graduated scale the quantity of liquid. contained in the tank.
Instead of being fixed directly to the pivot 13 ', i'aigiille 15 could be driven indirectly by means of reduction means.
Although the indicating device described is intended for a motorcycle tank, it could be used in any installation comprising a tank whose contents are to be gauged.
