Device indicating the oil level in the crankcase of an internal combustion engine.
Motor cars and other spark-ignition equipment with oil circulations are fitted with devices indicating the oil pressure in the lubrication pipes, but these monitoring devices are insufficient, because when for some cause such as '' driver forgetting to carry out a perioclical check or abnormal consumption, the volume of oil contained in the engine crankcase decreases, the oil heats up, has insufficient lubricity and can reach dangerous temperatures even though the oil pressure remains sufficient since the pump, the plug of which is placed at the bottom of the casing, is always supplied with power. It is therefore essential for the operating safety of the vehicle to be able to constantly check the oil stock in the crankcase.
To this end, in existing vehicles, the crankcases are sometimes provided with a level indicator consisting of a float placed in the crankcase and actuating a rod moving in front of a graduation, but most often with a simple gauge.
Float devices are difficult to achieve, since this float, placed in the vicinity of the connecting rods in action, must be placed in a very small space; furthermore, the oil level can only be known when it is stopped.
Gauge devices are extremely inconvenient, they require cleaning of the gauge before use, which dirties the user's hands; like the float oil level indicators, they can only be consulted when the vehicle is stationary.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks by providing an oil level indicator capable of being placed on the instrument panel and allowing precise indications both when running and when stopped.
The present invention relates to a device for indicating the level of a liquid in the crankcase of internal combustion engines, characterized in that the level measurement is carried out in an annex tank in static equilibrium with the main tank by a pipe. reducing the dynamic variations of the level, a float placed in this annex tank controlling by its movements the displacement of an electrical contact along an electrical resistance inserted in the circuit of a current source, the variations of an electrical quantity , following said displacement of the electrical contact being measured by an instrument graduated in oil level.
The pipe establishing communication between the annex tank and the main tank is preferably connected to the latter by a fitting replacing the drain plug.
According to a preferred embodiment, the electrical contact consists of two knobs mounted on the float and electrically connected to each other and each pressed against an electrical conductor, at least one of these conductors constituting a variable resistance depending on the position of the float. In this embodiment, an improvement is obtained when the knurls bear on two diametrically opposed generatrices of a cylinder carrying a single resistor wound in a helix, the rod which carries the knurls being grounded.
Finally, according to another modification of the device, the float is used to control, when it falls above a predetermined level, the lighting of a signal lamp.
Various embodiments of the level indicator, object of the invention, will be described below with reference to the appended drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view of a float device connected to the tank drain plug.
Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view of a device in which the annex tank is foundry molded with the housing, the electrical device using a potentiometric assembly.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a device in which the vertical movement of the float is transformed into a rotational movement of a lever carrying contacts cooperating with a resistance in the form of a circular arc, the float being of the variable buoyancy type.
Fig. 4 is a section parallel to the axis of the housing of a float device constituting a third variant.
The oil sump 1 in which the oil level can be established between a maximum oil level 2 and an almost zero oil level 3 is filled with oil up to level 4.
This housing has at its lower part a threaded hole for the drain plug.
Into this threaded hole is screwed an intermediate connector 5, communicating via a pipe 9 with a second intermediate connector fixed to the lower part of a tube 10 fixed to the lateral part of the casing. These two connectors are each constituted by a threaded cylinder with a hexagonal head having in the vicinity of this head a cylindrical part pierced transversely at 6 and on which is engaged a ring-shaped connector 7 whose internal pipe 8 communicates. with pipe 9.
In the tube 10 is placed a float 11 which carries a metal rod 12 which passes through a fitting 13 forming the upper plug for the tube 10 and the bottom of a second tube 14 in which is placed an electrical resistance 15 in- rolled around an insulating tube 16. This tube is milled by 17 following two opposite generatrices. The insulating tube is immobilized by a groove 18 in the upper face of the connector 13 and by a spacer ring 19.
One of the ends of the resistor is connected to a terminal 20. The upper end of the rod 12 carries a light elastic fork 21 formed by a thin strip of steel, each branch itself carrying a wheel 22. The two rollers pass through the recesses 17 of the tube 16 and come to bear at two opposite points of the resistance 15.
The rod 12 of the float 11 is itself connected by a flexible electrical conductor 23 to the ground of the device. In addition, a wafer 24 is placed opposite the lower end of one of the countersinks 17 and connected by a conductor 25 to a terminal 26.
Terminal 20 is connected to an ammeter 27 graduated in oil level, the other pole of this ammeter being connected to the positive terminal of battery 28. Terminal 26 is connected to one of the poles of a lamp. alert 29, the other pole of which is also connected to the positive pole of the battery.
When the oil level in the crankcase varies, the float 11 undergoes these fluctuations which are reflected in the annex tank, however dampened by the compression due to the change of section which occurs in the connection 5 and in the pipe 9, which eliminates accidental steer variations of this level.
The movements of the float are transmitted by the rod 12 to the rollers 22 and the length of the resistor 15, inserted in the circuit of the ammeter 27, decreases as the oil level increases, thus increasing the value of the current intensity. passing through ammeter 27.
When the oil level drops below the critical value, plate 24 (being grounded by the moving assembly formed by the rollers and lamp 29, ignites.
In the device shown in FIG. 2, the motor housing 1 is molded. In the side wall of this housing is. produced, from foundry with the part, a cylindrical well 30. This cylindrical well ends at its base part with a bottom 31 and is closed at its upper part by a threaded plug 32.
In the bottom of the casing is made a pipe 33 coming out at 34 at the low point and in line with the center of gravity of the earter to the right of a drain plug allowing the device to be purged when emptying the carter.
In the well 30 is mounted the electrical device. This comprises a metallic cylinder 35 having, along one of its generatrices, a slot 36, and diametrically opposed, a groove 37. Around this eylinder is placed an electrically iaolani layer. 38 which covers it entirely except to the right of the slot 36.
At the periphery of this insulating layer is wound an electrical resistance 39, itself separated at its periphery by an insulating layer 40, from the wall of the well 30. The wall of the cylinder 35 is electrically connected by a wire 41 to one of the terminals of a voltmeter 42 whose other terminal is. connected to ground; The lower end of the resistor 40 is connected to a plate 43 whose contact with the mass is ensured and improved by a needle screw 44. The other end of the resistor is connected by a wire 45 to the positive battery terminal 45, the negative terminal of which is earthed as usual.
In the well is placed a float 47. The depth of the well 31 measured below the level of point 34 is greater than the depression of the float below its waterline, in order to allow the minimum level to be measured. . To the upper surface of the float is fixed an elastic metal band 48, folded in a U. This elastic metal band carries, at the ends 5 of the branches of the U, two knobs 49 and 50.
The wheel 49 passes into the slot 36 of the body 35 and through the corresponding slot of the insulating layer 38 and comes to bear against the turns of the resistor 39. The wheel 50 rests on the bottom of the groove 37. To improve contacts electric and avoid the insulating effect of the oil film which may remain on the metal surfaces when the level in the crankcase drops, the knurls have a sharp edge.
With this device, when the oil level in the crankcase fluctuates slowly due to abnormal oil consumption or for any other cause, for example due to water or petrol entering the engine crankcase due to a leak, the float follows this variation. It therefore establishes contact between the metal cylinder 35 and a point of the resistance whose potential is variable according to the height. Accordingly, the potential of cylinder 35 varies with the volume of oil or liquid in the crankcase. The voltmeter 42 being graduated in volume of oil, the volume in the crankcase can be read directly on the instrument panel.
In the device shown in FIG. 3, we find the housing 1 with its threaded drain hole. As in the example of FIG. 1, at the drain plug, a connector 3 having an axial blind hole and a side hole 6. Around the connector 5 is engaged a ring 7 whose internal face has, to the right of the hole 6, a peripheral groove 8 which communicates, by a tube 9 with the internal groove of a similar ring placed at the other end of said tube. On this ring engages a connector similar to the connectors 5 above; this connection is screwed to the lower part of a vertical tube 51 of larger diameter fixed to the side of the housing by a tab and constituting the annex tank. The upper part of the tube 51 is threaded to receive a housing 52 housing the electrical device.
In the tube 51 is placed a float 53 of great height extended by a rod 54 which crosses with gentle friction the connection between the housing 52 and the tube 51 and carries a wheel 55 at its end.
In the housing 52 is rotatably mounted on an axis 56 perpendicular to the axis of the rod 54, a V-shaped lever 57, one of the branches of which is curved and has a groove 58, in which the wheel engages. 55. The profile of the bottom of the groove 58 is such that, in all its positions, this bottom at the point of contact with the wheel 55, is orthogonal to the axis of the rod 54. The other branch of the lever 57 ends by two contacts formed by two flexible blades 59 coming to rest on either side on an electrical resistance 60 wound on a support in the form of a circle 61 integral with the housing 52. A spring 62 is supported, on the one hand, on the branch 58 of the lever 57 and, on the other hand, on an adjustable threaded stop 63 integral with the housing 54.
One end of resistor 60 is connected by a wire 64 to a terminal of an ammeter 65, the other terminal of which is connected to the positive of battery 65.
The level of the oil in tube 51, which is established through line 9 and the end fittings, is a stable level due to the length of this line and the viscosity of the oil filling it, that is, that is, it is practically insensitive to sudden movements of the volume of oil in the crankcase under the effect of accelerations, decelerations and turns. It therefore represents exactly the actual oil level in the crankcase. This level determines the position of the float 53, but to prevent the float from having too great a vertical displacement, which would lead to an arm of the lever 58 of very great length, an antagonistic force is exerted on this float which increases its foneement at as the level rises.
The spring 62 is, consequently, chosen such that the depression of the float is zero when it is in the vicinity of its low point (under the action for example of the same spring 62 then fixed on the axis of the wheel but exerting a traction equal to the weight of the rod 54 and of the float when the latter reaches its low point) and maximum when it is in the vicinity of its high point. The antagonistic force of the spring can be adjusted by acting on the threaded stop 62.
The movement of the float is transformed by the lever 57 into a movement of the contacts 59 along the resistor 60, these contacts 59 being grounded due to their mounting. The resistance inserted in the circuit of the ammeter 65 varies, accordingly, as a function of the position of the float 53, and, consequently, of the oil level in the crankcase.
The ammeter being graduated in volume of oil, it is possible to read directly on it the volume of oil contained in the crankcase.
The device of FIG. 4 comprises a casing 67 divided into two parts by a partition 68. The chamber 69 made in the casing 67 is in communication by a tube 70 with the low point of the casing. In this chamber 69 is placed a float 71 articulated at 72 at the end of a bent rod 73 passing through the wall 68 by a window 74. The bent rod 73 is rotatably mounted by a hinge pin 75 carrying a second rod 76 which ends with two contacts 77 cooperating with an electrical resistance 78.
The rod 76 is grounded by a twisted wire 79. The lower end of the resistor 78 is connected by an electric wire 80 to a connection terminal 81. The variable resistor thus formed between the ground and the terminal 81, variable resistor, the value of which is a linear function of the oil level in chamber 69 and therefore in the crankcase, is used, as in the devices according to fig. 1 and to control an ammeter graduated in oil volume.
In addition, in this device, a contact 82 has been shown as an example in which the float 71 cooperates when the oil level in the reservoir reaches a critical value. This contact 82 is connected by an electric wire 83 to a second output terminal 84. This second terminal 84 is connected to one of the terminals of a signal lamp placed on the dashboard, similar to the lamp 29 of the fig. 1, Lamp that lights up when the oil level drops below a critical value.
