<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
A.

CHECKING THE OPERATION OF HYDRAULIC BRAKES OF AUTOMOBILES.
- Up to now, the checking of the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir of the hydraulic brakes of motor cars is usually done during general lubrication of motor cars, i.e. in the best case, every 1000 km; and, more commonly, every 1500 km.
However, the piping (pipes) is exposed at many points to be damaged in various ways such as stones, etc. thrown (by vehicles in front, or by its own tires) either by being progressively sawn off by friction, for example, from a wing slightly released or by any organ which is accidentally pressed against the piping, such as rods, cables, shielding, etc.
Both of these damages cause fluid to leak from the hydraulic brake system. On the other hand, a leak can result from a loosening of one of the many fittings, from a faulty seal, from a scratch in the brake cylinder of a wheel, or simply from wear of one of the many cups.
Whatever the cause, such a slow or rapid brake fluid leak presents the motorist with a mortal danger: in fact, as long as there is sufficient fluid in the master reservoir. cylinder, the driver cannot realize that he is approaching when he no longer has the brakes. Only when the level of the liquid drops to such an extent that the piston sends a little air into the piping, and this air, compressing when the brake is applied, will absorb the pressure which should normally have been exerted on the pads. brakes, the driver will notice, but too late to be able to avoid the accident, that his brake no longer responds.
The object of the present invention is to control the quantity of fluid in the hydraulic system of the brakes. The apparatus is characterized by a float, either metallic, or coated with metal, or comprising a metallic part, (capable of transmitting a electric current) which floats on the fluid level of the master cylinder reservoir, but is locked in canopy
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a specially constructed tube mounted on the cover or filler cap of said reservoir.
When this level drops unexpectedly for whatever reason, the descending float lights a control lamp, connecting the stud with which the ground wire of the latter ends, and the metal body of the lamp. device, which is grounded. When the level is normal, the float leaves this relay position, and, floating freely in the space larger than its diameter, cannot touch both the above-mentioned stud and the body of the device, and the control lamp. goes out ..
Referring to the drawings appended to the present description, which show by way of example various embodiments and variations in construction details, it can be seen that it is possible to achieve the object of the invention in such a way that that, not only does the control lamp come on in the event of a drop in the level due to an unexpected loss of brake fluid, but also the said lamp comes on, (if the details of construction and adjustment are provided for ) during the momentary minimal increase that occurs with each brake stroke. In this latter embodiment, and with the aforementioned setting, the state of the control lamp itself is checked automatically with each brake stroke.
It is understood that the embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings and described below are given only by way of example, the invention being in no way limited thereto.
In drawing plate n I, Fig. 1 shows a vertical section of one embodiment of the device, with the metal float I floating on the surface of the normal level Q of the brake fluid in the reservoir of the master cylinder J.
Cylinder A, in the embodiment shown by way of example in Plate I, is metallic, and is grounded. In the cover or filler cap K of the master cylinder reservoir J, a hole is made, and the cylinder A, passing through it, is fixed to the aforementioned filler cap or cap (depending on the model) by nuts L and M, (fitted if necessary with gaskets, not shown) by tightening it on both sides. The cylinder A being threaded towards its middle in order to receive the nuts L and M, the device can be fixed at different heights, depending on the model of the master cylinder.
The cylinder A of the device is provided with a cover B. In this is made a hole, closed by a screw C, through which the brake fluid can be poured without dismantling the device. On the other hand, the cover B is pierced eccentrically by a metal rod D. Equipped at its upper end with a female plug P, this rod D is threaded over a certain length of its lower end. , and thus is screwed into the stud E, which is fixed by its base, by means of a screw H, to an insulating washer F, which serves as a guide. Being eccentric, the threaded rod D, provided with a sheath of non-conductive material G, by screwing or unscrewing, drives the stud E to the precise desired height.
In this way, there is a double adjustment of the height of the device: first, that by which the height of the assembly is adjusted in relation to the reservoir of the master cylinder, by means of the nuts L and M; this adjustment, once made, can be considered as more or less definitive. In the second place, there is the more precise adjustment, and instantly changeable at will, of the height of the stud E, by screwing or unscrewing the threaded rod D. By the aforementioned adjustments it is easy to position the device very precisely. , so that it detects., according to individual needs, even the beginning of a minimal loss of brake fluid.
In plate I, the stud E is shown by way of example in the fork, this form allowing the adjustment already mentioned, by means of which the control lamp comes on each time the brake is applied. If a mode of execution is desired where only an unexpected drop in the level of the brake fluid is indicated by the control lamp, the upper part of the stud E can be omitted, and the latter, instead of being forked, may have only the lower part of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
plot E shown in the drawing.
The cylinder A has in its lower part a number of holes N which allow the free entry of the brake fluid inside the device. But for an embodiment in which the control lamp lights up with each brake stroke, since the momentary rise in the liquid at that time is very small, it is preferable to amplify it by means of the brake. fitting, on the bottom of cylinder A, of a funnel skirt X flexible enough to allow it to pass through an orifice smaller than its own largest diameter, and in this case the multiple holes should be omitted N above to keep only one large hole in the bottom W of cylinder A.
In Figs. 1 and II of plate 1, the upper part of such a funnel skirt X is shown schematically in dotted lines, mounted, by way of example, outside the bottom of cylinder A.
Fig. II of plate 1 shows a vertical section of the same embodiment as in FIG. I, and shows on the one hand, following a drop in the level Q 2 of the brake fluid, the float I no longer floating.
In this relay position, the float I touches both the lower part of the stud E and the metal wall of the cylinder A, which is earthed, thus causing the control lamp to light up. Fig. On the other hand, it shows (in dotted lines) the momentary minimal increase in the level QI of the brake fluid during a brake application, and the position of the float I, (also in dotted lines) which, when pushed against the part. top of pad E, simultaneously touches the metal wall of cylinder A., thus igniting the control lamp, one of the pads of which receives current continuously, while the other, isolated from the body of the lamp, is connected by a wire to a removable male plug 0, which is placed in the female plug P.
Fig. III of plate n I is a cross section of the device, made at level III - III of Figo 1, in which we see the wall of cylinder A, rod D placed eccentrically with respect to said cylinder A, and isolated therefrom by a sheath or sheath G of insulating material.
Fig. IV of plate I is a cross section of the device, made at level IV - IV of FIG. I, in which can be seen the wall of cylinder A, pierced with holes N, allowing brake fluid to pass inside said cylinder A; the threaded rod D, eccentrically screwed into the metal stud E, which is fixed to the insulating washer F (serving as a guide), which is of a diameter slightly less than that of the interior of the cylinder A, and allows the stud E and its guide washer F to slide freely under the action of said rod.
Fig. V of board I is a cross section of the bottom of the device, showing the wall of cylinder A, with holes N, and the bottom of threaded rod D.
Without departing from the essential points of the invention, there may be variations in the details of certain parts described above.
For example, instead of the threaded rod D being provided with a sheath of non-conductive material G, a bell or cylinder of insulating material can be fixed to the stud E, so as to move at the same time as the latter. ci, and to delimit the course of the float, while isolating it from the rod D. Plates ns II and III show by way of example some other variations of embodiment.
Figo 1 of plate II shows a vertical section of an embodiment of the device in which the float, composed of a non-conductive part I 1, and a metal part I 2, slides freely on a metal guide rod R The rod R is provided in its upper part with a female plug S; the male T plug which attaches to it is earthed. A hole in the insulating washer F (which serves as a guide for the stud E) allows the passage of the rod R. The float floats on the surface Q of the liquid.
Fig II of Plate II shows a vertical section of the lower part of the device in the embodiment shown in Fig, I,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
with the metal part 1 2 of the float in contact with the pad E, when a drop in. level. Q 2 made the float descend along the guide rod R. By its special shape the metal part 1 2 of the float, as can be seen in Fig. II, when there is sufficient drop in level Q 2, downward contact is established between pad E and guide rod R, which is connected to the mass. It should be noted that cylinder A, in this .formation ;, can be either metal or non-conductive material.
Fig. III of plate II shows a vertical section of part of the device in the embodiment in which cylinder A, instead of being made of metal, is made of non-conductive material. In this case, the mass no longer being given by the body of cylinder A, a metal strip V is applied against the inner wall of said cylinder, on the side opposite to that of the location of the rod D A female plug S is mounted in the cover B, and the lamella V is fixed there, either by welding or by a nut U. The female plug S, being hollow, is advantageously used for filling the tank, and in this case, the male plug T, connected to earth, replaces screw C (Figs. I and, plate I, Figs. III and IV, plate III).
Fig. I of plate III shows a vertical section of an embodiment of the device similar to that of Figs, I and II of plate II, in that the float slides on a metal guide rod R. But, at instead of being designed to detect only a drop in level Q - Q 2, the device is also designed to light the control lamp when the brake is applied. For this purpose, the pad E is forked as in Figs. I and II of the board I but is fixed by its upper part, by means of a screw H, to the insulating washer F which serves as a guide. It should be noted that said washer can be located either above or below the stud E.
The float comprises the non-conductive part I 1 and the metal part 1 2, as shown in FIG. I and Figo II of the plate II, and in addition, a second metal part 1 3, integral with 1 2 or not,
Fig. II of plate III shows a vertical section of the lower part of the device in the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, with the float in relay position following the momentary increase (when the brake is applied) in the level Q 1 of the liquid. In this position, the metal part 1 3 of the float is in contact with the upper part of the fork of the stud E, thus connecting the latter to the ground, by the rod R.
The second position of the float, in the event of a drop in level Q 2, is shown in the same Fig, II, in dotted lines more erased o In this case, it is the metal part 1 2 of the float which comes into contact with the lower part of the fork of stud E.
Fig. III of plate III shows a vertical section of an embodiment of the device in which the float, comprising a non-conductive part I 1, and two metal parts 1 2 and 1 3 ', integral, giving contact, is centered at the point R on the stud E in which the guide rod is screwed D. The insulating washer F to which the stud E is fixed by means of a screw H, is shown above the float, but, according to the model of the latter, can optionally be fixed below.
Fig. IV of plate III shows a vertical section of the lower part of the device in the embodiment shown in Fig.III, with the metal part 1 3 of the float in contact with the metal wall of the cylinder A (thus giving the mass) , as a result of the momentary rise (when the brake is applied) in the level Q 1 of the liquid. The second position of the float, tilting on its axis R in the event of a drop in level Q 2, is shown in the same Fig. IV in dotted lines. In this case, it is the metal part r 2 of the float which touches the metal wall of cylinder A, thus giving mass.
Figs. of plate III shows a funnel-skirt X mounted in the bottom of cylinder A, with a salt hole N through its bottom W,
It is understood that in all the embodiments of the device, whatever they may be, to prevent a vacuum from being created, a hole
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of minimal dimension (not shown in the drawings) must be located somewhere in the top of cylinder A, or in its cover B, or in the screw C, to allow access of atmospheric pressure to the interior of the cylinder

In the event that the device is not constructed and adjusted so that the control lamp lights up at each brake stroke, as, by its purpose, this lamp will not be called upon to light up. often there is always the danger that the lamp itself will fail. For this reason, it is preferable that the control lamp is of the removable model, in the form of a plug, as described in the patent. Perfection n 518.217, deposited in Belgium on March 6, 1953. In this case, its condition can easily be checked.
However, to avoid the driver having to remember to have the condition of the control lamp checked frequently, a particularly advantageous embodiment combines in said brake control lamp and that of the door or doors of the car.
Plate IV shows by way of example, schematically, the control lamp C connected on the one hand to the device B object of the invention, and on the other hand, at the same time, connected to the four doors KI, 2, 3 , 4 of the car, according to the aforementioned variation.
In Fig. I, the pad M of the control lamp C permanently receives the current from the source A, one pole of which is to ground D. The other pad L is connected to the device B object of the invention, and at the same time time is connected to push-buttons F 1, 2,3,4, fitted to the four doors K 1,2,3,4. Push button F, of a known model, is built into the frame of each of the doors K. The H 1 stud of the push buttons is grounded I. The H 2 stud of the push buttons and connected to the ground wire of the control lamp C. With the doors closed, keep the plates G of the push-buttons F away from the pads H 1 and H 2, and thus, the mass not being given to it, the control lamp is not on.
In Fig. II, the door K 1 being open, the plate G of the push-button F 1, under the action of its spring E, is applied to the pads H 1 and H 2, and the control lamp C lights up. As soon as the door thus equipped is properly closed, the push-button, being pushed back under the action of the door, stops giving mass to the control lamp, which therefore goes out.
The additional installation described above, while having as its main objective the most practical, automatic and frequent check possible of the state of the brake operation control lamp, offers the distinct advantage of allowing the motorist to know automatically if his door (s) are properly closed. This is all the more important in the case of doors opening towards the front, since it is well known that the latter, imperfectly closed, have often been the cause of serious accidents.
By the combination described above, the driver can, by seeing the check lamp remain on or come on while driving, first check whether his door (s) are properly closed o Then, if the check lamp remains always on, the driver will know that there is indeed an anomaly in his brake system.
