Process for the preparation of a copper-containing disazo dye. It has been found that a new, valuable copper-containing disazo dye is obtained if tetrazotized 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane is coupled with 2 moles of 2-oxynaphthalene-3,6-disulfonic acid and the disazo dye obtained is subjected to oxidizing copper.
The oxidizing coppering can take place in such a way that the disazo dye is added in a neutral to weakly acidic medium with the addition of water-soluble copper salts. Treated with water and peroxide. One can also proceed in such a way that air is allowed to act on the disazo dye dissolved in water after the addition of copper salts and compounds that form peroxides with molecular oxygen.
Finally, the oxidizing coppering can also be brought about by treating the disazo dye in the presence of metallic copper, expediently with the addition of water-soluble copper salts, at about 100 to 150 under pressure with air, where it is advantageous to add small amounts of such polynuclear quinones, which are reduced by metallic copper and whose reduction products are re-oxidized by elemental oxygen.
The result of this oxidizing copper is that the groups I present in the disazo dyes used are converted into the copper complex groups II.

The copper-containing disazo dye obtainable in this way can be used as such for dyeing, in particular fibers made from natural or regenerated cellulose or leather. The colors are extremely washable and lightfast.
The parts mentioned in the examples are parts by weight. Example 1: The obtained by tetrazotizing 19.8 parts of 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane and coupling with 60.8 parts of 2-oxynaphthalene-3,
6-disulfonic acid produced disazo dye is stirred with 2000 parts of water at 30. 80 parts of crystallized sodium acetate and 50 parts of crystallized copper sulfate are added, and the resulting solution is gradually mixed with 400 parts of a 3.4% strength aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution. Salting out gives 200 parts of a dye which dyes leather in a real red-violet color.
Example 2 16 parts of the disazo dye mentioned in Example 1 are dissolved in 800 parts of hot water. After the addition of 15 parts of crystallized sodium acetate, 10 parts of kri-crystallized copper sulfate and 10 parts of copper powder, the mixture is placed in a corrosion-resistant autoclave and air of about 25 atmospheres is pressed in at 120 with stirring for 5 hours, which can be relieved again and again renewed.
It is then allowed to cool, filtered and the filtrate is salted out.
