Process for the production of a cobalt-containing azo dye. It has been found that a new, valuable, cobalt-containing azo dye can be obtained by using a mixture of the two monoazo dyes that correspond to the formulas

correspond, lets the cobalt-releasing agent act in such a way that an azo dye containing cobalt is formed,
which contains one molecule of each of the two starting monoazo dyes bound to a cobalt atom in a complex.
The new cobalt-containing dye is a water-soluble powder that dyes wool from weakly alkaline, neutral or weakly acetic acid baths in shades of Bordeaux with good lightfastness and washfastness.
The two monoazo dyes used as starting materials in the present process can be prepared by methods known per se by mixing diazotized 2-amino-1-oxybenzene-4-sulfonic acid methylamide with 2-oxymaphthalene and diazotized 2-amino-1-oxyben7ol-4-methylsulfone coupled with 5,8-dichloro-oxynaphthalene in an alkaline medium.
When performing the procedure recommends. it is generally a matter of using an amount of a cobalt-releasing agent containing about one gram atom of cobalt on a mixture containing a total of 2 moles of monoazo dye and about 1 mole of each of the two dyes used as starting materials and / or the metallization to be carried out in a weakly acidic to alkaline medium. There are for example as a cobalt-releasing agent for
the implementation of the process is particularly well suited to complex cobalt compounds of aliphatic o-oxycarboxylic acids or conveniently simple salts of divalent cobalt such as cobalt sulfate or cobalt acetate.
The conversion of the dyes into the complex cobalt compounds takes place with advantage in the heat, open or under pressure, z. B. at the boiling point of the reac tion mixture, optionally in the presence of suitable additives, for. B. in the presence of salts of organic acids, bases, orga African solvents or. other means promoting complex formation.
Example: 3.57 parts of the dye from diazotized 2-amino-1-oxybenzene-4-sulfonic acid methylamide and, B-naphthol and 4-, 11 parts of the dye from diazotized 2-amino-l- oxybenzene - 1-methylsulphone and 5,8-dichloro-l-oxynaphthalin, both dyes in the form of a moist paste (filter cake),
are dissolved in 600 parts of water and 5 parts of 30% strength sodium hydroxide solution. The solution, heated to about 80, is mixed with 60 parts of a cobalt sulfate solution with a cobalt content of.
1.05% was added and the mixture was stirred at 80 to 85 for 30 minutes. After this time, the complex formation is over. It is filtered hot and the filtrate is evaporated in vacuo.
