Method of calibrating the balance-spring assembly of watch movements, and <B> </B> machine for its implementation. 1.a present invention aims- to realize a method and a machine for calibrating the balance-spring assembly of watches, alarm clocks and other watch movements.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the spiral spring is suspended at a point spun by a point. of that of its turns which is opposite the end attached to the axis of the balance, the balance is given an angular impulse around its axis, so that the latter rises and falls successively under the effect of contractions and expansions of the spiral spring, and the contacts of the balance with a surface disposed under the balance are counted.
The machine intended for implementing the method comprises a contact plate., A clamp arranged above said plate and in which a point can be fixed. that of the turns of a spiral spring which is opposite the end attached to the balance, means for adjusting the distance separating the plate (the clamp, and an electrical circuit connecting the clamp to the plate and in which is interlocked a counter device functioning whenever the axis of the balance comes into contact with the plate.
In this machine, the clamp is. preferably constituted by two cylindrical surfaces pushed elastically against each other and carried respectively one fixedly by the lower end of a rotating rod and the other freely by a head in which said rod is rotatably mounted, so that, when the hairspring is engaged between the two cylindrical surfaces, the rotation of said rod causes the displacement of the point of the hairspring clamped between the two cylindrical surfaces.
Preferably, said head is rotatably mounted, around said rod, in a fixed support, and supports an eyebolt holder for carrying at its lower end a eyebolt provided with a perforation in which can. engage the end of the spiral spring, so that a whole movement, arranged in an angular reciprocation of the head around the axis of said rod causes the launching of the balance and the spiral spring.
In a preferred embodiment, the eyebolt holder can be locked with its eyebolt in the position assigned to it with respect to the rotating rod, so that the eyebolt maintains an invariable position with respect to the clamping point. of the clamp and allows the piton to be carried out when, the hairspring being adjusted, it is still in place on the machine.
It is possible to provide for the mounting of the contact plate. so that it can be brought closer or removed from the clamp supporting the hairspring, on the one hand, by means of a device. fast action and, on the other hand, using a device to. slow acting. The appended drawing represents, by way of nonlimiting example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.

The fi-. 2 is a section taken along line II-II of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view of the thumbwheel and the groove which, by their cooperation, constitute the clamp intended to clamp the end of the spiral spring.
Fig. 4 is a section of the lower end of the eyebolt carrying a eyebolt.
Fig. 5 shows schematically, in plan, the respective positions occupied by the various organs.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the devices allowing slow or rapid movement of the contact plate.
The frame 1 of the machine carries a table 2 in which is guided vertically a rod 3 carrying a bowl 4 containing. a contact plate 5 made of a material which is a good conductor of electricity. The frame has at its upper part a sleeve 6 in which the journal 7 of a horizontal arm 8 can turn on the table 2. Two nuts 9 and 10 screwed onto the threaded end of the journal 7 allow the arm 8 in the angular position given to it around the axis of the sleeve 6.
A head 11 is. rotatably mounted in the arm 8 by means of a conical pin 1.2 carried eccentrically by the head 11 and engaging in a conical bearing surface 13 of the arm 8. The eccentricity of the axis AB of the head 11 with respect to the The ox axis of journal 1 \ 3 is approximately equal to the radius of the largest turn of the balance springs to be tested. A button 1.4, fixed to the upper end of the journal 12, serves as an operating member to rotate the head 11. and maintains. the head suspended in the arm 8 by means of an elastic washer 15.
The head 11. is traversed along the axis of the journal 12 by a rod 16 terminated at its upper part by a threaded part on which are screwed two buttons 17 and 18 forming a nut and locknut and preventing any play of the rod. 16 along its axis. The button 18 serves as a control member to rotate the rod 16, and the button 1.7 carries a needle 19 moving vis-à-vis the gradation carried by the button 1.4, so as to measure the angular displacement of the rod 16 relative to the head 11.
The rod 1.6 has at its lower part a groove 20 (FIG. 3) in which is pushed a wheel 21. which can turn freely. on the elastic arm 22 carried by the head 11 .. The wheel 21 and the groove 20 form the two jaws of a clamp in which one can engage the outer end of a spiral to be tested 23, bearing at. its inner end a balan cier 24, the axis 25 of which can cooperate via its lower end with the contact plate 5.
A lever 26 pivoting at 27 on the arm 22 rests on the rod 16 and allows the resilient arm 22 and, consequently, to move away from this rod 16 and, consequently, the. wheel 21 when you want to insert the end of the hairspring into the clamp or remove it.
On a cylindrical bearing of the head 11 is. ascent rotativ had soot crown 28 which can rotate around the axis A-B. An angled eyebolt 29 comprises a vertical shaft end 30 journalled in the head 11 and more precisely.
in the crown 28 and can be fixed in the orientation given to it by means of a screw 31. <B> A </B> its lower end, this eyebolt has the shape of a clamp (Fig. 4) whose two jaws 32 and 33 can, under the action of a locking nut 36, tighten between them a stud 31 pierced with an orifice 35. This. orifice 35 is intended to receive the end of the hairspring 23 after its point of clamping between the wheel 21 and the groove 20. The eyebolt holder 29 is eoudé, so that by doing so, it is possible to turn around 30. move the pin 31 closer to or away from the axis AB.
The rod 3 carrying the cup 4 and the contact 5 can receive either a rapid vertical movement (fig. 6) by means of the button 3'7 fixed on a rod 38 carrying a toothing 39 which meshes with a rack 40 carried by the rod 3, or a slow vertical movement by means of the button 41. integral with a worm meshing with a helical wheel 42 which drives the rod 38 by means of a friction washer 43 pushed by a spring.
When the balance 24 has been given an impulse around its axis, the balance-spring assembly is animated by an up and down movement due to the winding and. unwinding of the spiral spring. The height of the bowl 4 is adjusted so that in neutral. lower, the axis 25 of the balance 24 touches the contact plate 5 without exerting any effort, that is to say in such a way that, practically all the weight of the balance-spring assembly is still supported by the point of suspension of the hairspring between the wheel 21 and the groove 20. During these successive angular oscillations, the balance rises and falls until it touches the contact plate 5. This contact.
closes a circuit containing. a counting device which makes it possible to determine the number of oscillations of the balance per unit of time.
This counting device may consist, for example, of a neon tube mounted in said circuit and arranged behind a disc dragged by a synchronous motor and provided with a radial slot which allows the flash of the neon tube to pass. If the disc makes one revolution in '!, Of a second, and if the ignition takes place every' /, of a second, the light ray seems to remain motionless; at this time, the balance-spring assembly is calibrated. If, on the contrary, the light ray moves in one direction or the other, the contacts are established at less or more than '/, of a second.
This is because the balance-spring assembly is ahead or behind that must be eliminated.
The machine's instructions for use are as follows: Depending on the average location of the racket pins in relation to the pin on the watch where the balance will be mounted, the distance between the pin 34 and the point of contact groove 20-wheel 21, on the one hand, by rotating the eyebolt 29 around 30 to place the eyebolt at the desired distance from the axis AB, that is to say at a distance substantially equal to the eccentricity of the axis AB of the head 1.1 with respect to the axis ox, and, on the other hand, by rotating the crown 28 around the.
head 11, that is to say around axis @ 1-B, so as to bring the eyelet in the path of the end of the hairspring clamped between the wheel 2-! and throat 20.
Loading of the eyebolt takes place by rotating the arm 8 in the socket 6 by 180, which brings the lower end of the eyebolt holder within reach of the operator, so that the latter can thus loosen the eyebolt. locking nut 36, put in place the eyebolt 34 while the orientation so that the axis of the hole 35 is tangent to the path of the end of the hairspring when the assembly will be returned to the normal position; the nut 36 is locked and the arm 8 is rotated again by 180 "to return it to its normal position.
With a pair of tweezers, the end of the hairspring is then taken, and after removing the wheel 21 by pressing on the lever 26, this end of the hairspring is introduced between the wheel 21 and the groove 20; the lever 26 is abandoned, so that the wheel clamps the spiral in the groove, keeping it suspended. Knob 18 is turned, which rotates rod 16; the groove 20 carried by this rod drives the hairspring by friction by rotating the wheel 21 on its own axis, and the free end of the hairspring enters the hole 35 of the pin 34 which has been oriented, as explained above. above.
The hairspring is thus maintenii1 between two points situated on the same eirconference of axis A-B, so that the axis 0'- <B> Y </B> 'of the balance is. substantially coincident with the A-B axis.
The position of the contact plate 5 is then adjusted so that the lower dead center axis 25 of the balance 24 simply touches the plate 5 without leaning on this plate, so that the balance-spring assembly remains suspended. suspended by all its weight in the groove 20. This adjustment is carried out first approximately by means of the button 37, and then by means of the fine adjustment button 41: a cathodic eye placed in the circuit closes when the current past.
These various adjustments being made, it is now a question of determining exactly the length which must have the part of the hairspring between the groove 20 and the balance \ '4, or, which amounts to the same thing, the point where the hairspring must be. pitonne. To this end, in order to start the balance, the button 14 integral with the head 11 is printed by hand with an alternating rotational movement, as when winding a watch.
The whole of the head pivots en bloc around the axis o-x and the axis of the balance 24 is driven in this movement. around o-x following a circular trajectory whose radius has a length equal to the distance separating o-x from A. <I> B. </I> This maneuver is enough to give the balance a reciprocating circular motion. The balance then has two movements: one, angular, in its own plane, and the other along its axis.
This last movement successively raises and lowers the balance, the contact tip 25 of which periodically touches the contact plate 5 by lighting the neon lamp a.Li. If the lightning flash does not remain stationary, the button 18 is turned in one direction or the other depending on whether the balance-spring assembly is ahead or behind; this maneuver turns the rod 16 and, consequently, the groove 20 which drives the hairspring by friction, which moves by rotating the. wheel 21, the axis of which remains stationary and by moving the end of the hairspring forward or backward in the hole 35 of the eyebolt.
The balance 24 is launched again to make new observations by means of the neon lamp, and these operations are repeated until, under the effect of the oscillations of the balance, the lightning flash remains fixed. At this moment, the length of the spiral is determined and the spiral is pinned by driving a pin 44 into the hole 35 of the pin 34, so as to wedge the hairspring in this hole. The nut 36 is then unlocked, the lever 26 is pressed to move the wheel 21 away from the groove 20, and the sprung barnacle assembly with the eyebolt falls adjusted and eyebolt.
Any device can be used to count the number of contacts of the tip 25 with the plate 5 and to compare the peak corresponding to the closing of the circuit with a quartz time base or suitably de-multiplied tuning fork, stroboscope, cathode-ray oscillograph, recorder.
Likewise, instead of adjusting the position of the plate 5 in height, the position of the arm 8 and of the members carried by this arm could be adjusted in height.
The machine shown has many advantages: high precision, high production, studding in place on this machine, elimination of the hairspring marking at counting point, economy.
