Le dessin annexé représente, partiellement et à titre d'exemple, une forme d'exécution de la machine faisant l'objet de l'invention. La fig. 1 est une vue en plan d'un cadre porte-matrices de cette machine; la, fig. 2 est une vue en bout de la fig. 1; la fi-. 3 est une coupe transversale de la fig. 1; les fig. 4 et 5 sont des vues de détail; la fig. 6 est une vue par l'avant du dis positif pour la composition des tableaux que comporte ladite machine; la fig. 7 est une vue latérale de la fig. 6;
Machine for melting and composing movable type printing. The present invention relates to a machine for melting and composing movable printing type, of the "Rototype" type, and in particular of the type described in Swiss Patents No. 63142 and 105007.
Known "Rototype" machines are generally provided with a supporting frame for the die blocks sliding on the front of the machine using a crank and a screw. For the change of characters, the operator is obliged to unlock the frame and turn the crank until the desired block is located. the. mold height.
The machine, object of the invention, is characterized in that it comprises blocks of dies arranged symmetrically with respect to a common axis, means being provided to drive all of the blocks around their common axis of symmetry in view of replacing, by a next block, the block cooperating with the mold and driven by a rotational movement around its own axis and back and forth on this axis, the machine further comprising a device for the automatic composition of tables.
In a preferred embodiment of this machine, the blocks can be changed without any intervention by the operator other than a simple lowering of two keys on the keyboard. It thus marks, for example by two pawls of the general drum carrying the pawls, that the change of the characters must occur at the moment when these pawls, raised by the keyboard, arrive opposite the clutch of the means operating the change. blocks. This can be done automatically.
During composition, the block in front of the mold is animated, as it is known. of two movements: a rotational movement and a back and forth movement. In said embodiment, the action of the pawl projecting by the first lowered key stops the back and forth movement of this block when the latter is at one end of its travel, for example at left. It is only in this position that it can be moved, for example a quarter of a turn if the blocks are four in number.
It is the action of the ratchet protruding by the second key which causes this replacement. The block thus placed in front of the mold immediately resumes its back-and-forth movement: the composition is not delayed.
On the other hand, the composition of the paintings, on machines of the type mentioned, is done here by hand in separate columns which are then assembled on the marble. On the "Rototype" this can be done without any difficulty by composing column by column to the desired justification and then assembling them.
In the machine according to the invention, the positive device for the automatic composition of the tables avoids the handling and manual assembly of the columns, which correspondingly accelerates the composition.
Furthermore, in said preferred embodiment of the machine, this device can be put on very quickly and removed with the memory, quickly to switch to normal composition without boarding. In addition, it is possible to use different types of characters in the same ta: bleau. This change of characters takes place in the simplest way thanks to the presence of the matrix blocks which can rotate around their common axis.
The appended drawing represents, partially and by way of example, an embodiment of the machine forming the subject of the invention. Fig. 1 is a plan view of a die-holder frame of this machine; 1a, fig. 2 is an end view of FIG. 1; the fi-. 3 is a cross section of FIG. 1; figs. 4 and 5 are detail views; fig. 6 is a view from the front of the positive device for the composition of the tables contained in said machine; fig. 7 is a side view of FIG. 6;
fig. 8 is a plan view of FIG. 6; fig. 9 is a detail view, and FIG. 10 is a plan view corresponding to FIG. 9.
For certain organs not visible in the drawing, reference is made to the patents listed above.
The machine shown comprises four blocks of dies, mounted between two integral discs 198 housed in a die-holder frame 199. At the center, between the four blocks 201, is a square axis 200, serving as a support for the blocks during the casting of the dies. characters. It keeps the two disks 198 spread out at the desired spacing.
'Towards its right end, the square axis 200 carries a sleeve 202 which keeps two outer discs apart, one of which is. 203, serves to advance the blocks by a quarter turn, and the other, 213, to block the discs 198 and, consequently, the block of the dies concerned in the exact position in front of the mold.
The frame 199 is made in two parts: one, lower, which can be inserted between two slides 204 fixed on the frame of the machine, the other, 199a, forming a cover for the two discs 198. This cover 199a is fixed to the lower part by four screws: the two cylindrical discs 198 turn without play between the lower part and the cover. On the other hand, the latter has a handle, at its upper part, so that the assembly can be easily introduced behind the slides 204 and removed from behind these slides.
A crank 205, connected to a shaft 48, performs an exact turn when a pawl, protruded by the lowered second key, acts on the corresponding clutch member, for example as described in Patent No. 105007. The crank pin 206 of the crank 205 is engaged in a slide 206a moving in a slide 207a of a large lever 207. The rotational movement of the crank 205 causes the lever 207 in an oscillating movement.
In fig. 2, the levers 207, 209 and 211 are drawn in their rest position, but in fig. 1, the lever 211 is rotated 90 forward so that its axis 216 and a pawl 212 are visible.
In the first phase of the rotating movement of the crank 205, the lever 207 is pushed to the right relative to the vertical, in the direction of the arrow. It meets a stud 2 08 of a lever 209 mounted around an axis? 10, which has the effect of releasing a nozzle 209a, conical, from this lever, from a notch a , also conical, formed in the disc 213.- At the same time, the lever 207 drives towards the right, by its forked end, a lever 211, placed between the discs 2 113 and 213, until 'that the pawl 212 of this lever, mounted around the axis 216, has reached tin hollow b' formed in the disc 203 and engages therein.
At this point, my level 205 has made a quarter turn and driven lever 907 to its far right position.
Continuing its rotating movement, the crank 205 begins to push the lever 07 to. left, to its starting position. As the pawl 212 is engaged in the hollow b "of the disc 203, the latter, and with it all the movable part of the frame - that is to say the discs 198, the central axis 200, the four blocks of die 201, with their axes, the four pinions 214 and drums 215 - is driven 90 in the direction marked by an arrow.
The block of dies which was previously in front of the mold is therefore replaced by the following block, 90 from the previous one. The crank 205, continuing its rotational movement towards the starting position, leads the lever 207 to the position drawn in FIG. 2, and stop.
By leaving its extreme right position to return to the left, the lever 207 leaves the stud 208: of the lever 209 which, under the action of a spring not shown in the drawing, brings the nozzle 209a near the periphery of the disc? 13 which is precisely in rotation. This nozzle exerts a certain pressure on the disc 213 which, far from being detrimental to operation, has the effect of reducing the live force generated by the rapid movement of the assembly.
To the. end of the movement of lever 2 (17 to the left, the next notch a appears in front of the nose 209a of the lever 209 which, pushed by its spring, engages there immediately and thus ensures the exact position of the new block in relation to the mold.
This movement of rotation of a quarter of a turn is done quickly and generates, because of the weight of the assembly, a fairly large live force which, when this movement is stopped, would result in a shock. To avoid this shock, the machine is provided with two levers 17 and 218 each mounted at one end 22 of a pin 219 (fig. 2 and 3).
The lever 217 is placed between the lever 209 and the frame 199; when the lever 209 is pushed by the lever 207 in the direction of the arrow, it acts by a pin 208a on the lever 217 and moves it by a certain angle.
Solid with the axis 219 and the lever 218, it therefore moves the end of the latter away from the periphery of a disc 220. The latter is fixed by screws on the left disc 198 and therefore rotates with the entire moving part. . The disc 220 carries, on its circumference, four notches in which the lever 218 can engage. These notches are similar to the notches b made in the disc 203; the lever 218 enters it before the rotation has come to a complete stop. The levers 217 and 218 are urged towards the center by a spring (not shown): the end of the lever 218 therefore engages in one of the elongated notches of the disc 220 as soon as it occurs.
The locations and fixing of the disc 20, of the lever 218 and of its axis 219 have been chosen so as to absorb most effectively the shock which occurs when the movement is stopped and the assembly works perfectly.
The frame 199 carries four blocks of ma trices 201, only two of which are shown in fig. 1. Each of the blocks 201 rotates with its drum 215 and its pinion 214 in bearings formed on the disks 198; they can move horizontally on the shafts 221 under the action of a lever 222 which gives the block opposite a back and forth movement.
It is therefore only the block which is in front of the mold which receives the two movements. The other three blocks are immobilized in a position determined by the nerve 223 of the frame 199 which penetrates their collar, that is to say towards their right end and prevents them from moving horizontally.
The change of a block is obtained as follows:. The change is registered on two pawls of drum 4 (see fig. 6 of patent no. 105007); the first acts on stopping the back and forth movement; this stop occurs when the block 201 is in its extreme left position, as shown in fig. 1. The lever 222 therefore also remains stopped in the same position. This happens for a certain advance of the drum. On the next advance, the pawl corresponding to the second lowered key acts on the clutch of the crank 205.
The crank 205, by its crank pin 206, drives the lever 207 which releases the nose 209a of the lever 209 of the disc 213. The lever 211, by its pawl 212, turns the disc 203 a quarter of a turn forward and with him the blocks of my trices. The block 201 which was in front of the mold therefore descends a quarter of a turn lower and is replaced by the second block, or by the third or the fourth if necessary. Naturally, each new change must be registered in advance on the pawls by pressing the keyboard. Rotational movement was not stopped during the change; the starting block disengaged from engagement with the driving pinion of the movement and the following pinion engaged with this driving pin just as easily.
The back and forth movement remains to be set in motion. For this purpose, the disc 203 carries on its outer face four projections e (fig. 1 and 2) spaced from each other by 90 '. On the path of these projections is a the clutch lever which, pushed back at the end of the rotational movement of the disc 203, ac couples the movement of the lever 222 and thus restarts the longitudinal movement of the block 201 in motion. The composition can therefore be continued immediately, without loss of time.
The machine shown further comprises a device for the automatic composition of tables.
As in the Rototype machine, the composter receives the cast characters, expelled from the mold one after the other, until the line is completely finished. Characters 224 (fig. 6 to 8) are held in the composter, on the one hand, by two lower pawls 225 housed in the composter and, on the other hand, by a movable head 226 which acts as a ratchet. superior; at the end of the line, this head drives the sunk line towards the galley and returns to its original position.
It is set in motion by the intermediary of a lever 227 controlled by a cam which, at the end of each line, is set in rotation by the action of a pawl 5 of the drum 4 (see fig. 6. of Swiss Patent No. 105007).
Each of the cast lines has its own justification; the element that transmits to! mold the measure of the spaces of the corresponding line is eclipsed at the end of the line and replaced by another, similar, but transmitting the measure of the spaces corresponding to the next line. In this machine, if we want to compose lines divided into several columns and give each column an exact length, we consider each part of the line, that is to say each column element, as an independent line. having its own justification and we compose it accordingly.
Like the "Rototype" described in the above-mentioned patents, the machine described has a counter for the thicknesses of the letters and a counter for the spaces; at the end of each line typed on the keyboard and recorded on drum 4, the lowering of a key automatically determines the justification; this consists in measuring, in the compound line, the void remaining to be filled by the spaces and in dividing this void by the number of spaces contained in the line and recorded on the space counter. The result of this automatic operation is transmitted to the elements which regulate the opening of the mold for the melting of the spaces during the casting of the corresponding line.
A central rod 81 (see fig. 1 of Swiss patent no 105007) which, at the end of the compound line, by its approach towards the meter rod, measures the gap to be filled in this same line, is replaced by as many rods that the table must have columns.
For four columns, for example, a small carriage 229 carries four holes in which four rods 98a-984 of different lengths are fixed. The carriage is put in place of the single rod used for the com position of undivided lines. The lengths of the four rods are adjusted according to the width of the columns to be composed.
They are such that the free end of the first rod 98a is, before composition, placed, relative to the central rod of the meter, at a distance corresponding to the width of the first column, the end of the second rod at a distance corresponding to the width of the first two columns, etc ...; the end of the last rod 984 is placed at a distance corresponding to the total width of the four columns, that is to say to the total width of the table.
The carriage 229 can be moved in a slide 280 so that the appropriate rod faces the central rod of the meter. This movement can be done either by hand or automatically. In the embodiment shown, provision has been made for movement by hand. A ball 231, pushed by a spring against the wall of the carriage 229, ensures the position of the latter. At the end of the column, the carriage is pushed from one position to the next and, at the end of the line, it is returned to its original position. These rods 98 could also be placed on a barrel which would be rotated to move from one position to another.
-Under a flexible rule of the counter, a strip of paper is imprisoned on which the widths of the columns are marked, so that the index finger fixed on the central rod, moving with each letter typed on the keyboard, indicates the approach at the end of the first column. The operator then presses the end of line key as in ordinary dialing.
The vacuum to be filled in this first column is measured by means of the rod 98a of the carriage 229; the measurement of the spaces for this first column is sent to the mold by the corresponding transmission element. The operator has previously lowered the control lever for returning the counter to zero by the width of the characters struck, so that by pressing the end of line key this counter is not brought back.
The operator, before moving the rod-98a which served for the justification of the first column, brings it closer to the central rod for the addition of the thicknesses of the characters, so that it indicates the total length com.- posed . He then pushes the carriage 229 so that the second rod 98b is in front of this central rod of the counter.
He composes the second column, presses the end of line key, moves the central rod to the second rod 98b, advances the third rod, composes the third column, etc.
After the justification of the fourth column, the operator pulls the carriage 229 with its four rods to its starting position and immediately begins the composition of the second row.
It is necessary, after the melting of each section of line (column), that the head 226 makes its movement of driving the letters empty, that is to say:, ans. remove these letters from the composter, so that the letters in one column are added to those in the previous one until the row is complete. When the line is complete, it must be pushed towards the galley by the head 226, and this automatically, whatever the number of the columns which compose it.
For this purpose, the support of the composter receives a pair of pinions 232 and 233 mounted on a common axis 233a, which carries their garlic at its other end a button 234 for its rotation by hand. This axis, and the parts that it carries, is mounted in a bearing 235 fixed to the rear of the support of the com post, so as to be able to be detached or replaced very quickly.
In the bearing 235 is further provided a spring box 23-6 in which is housed a pin 237 penetrating between the teeth of the pinion 233 and which maintains the latter in the position given to it either by hand or start of composition, or mechanically for the rest of the operation.
At the lower part of the support 148 of the composter is. housed a rod 238 carrying a pawl at each end. The left pawl 239 is engaged between the teeth .du gnon 233; when the rod 23, 8 is pushed to the left, by the lever 227 under the action of a cam, this pawl pushes the pinion 233 with one tooth and only one.
The movement of the lever 227 being suitable for transporting the cast line is very ample, but the rod 2.38 is pushed by the strict amount necessary, thanks to the second pawl 240 which emerges sufficiently to be hooked by the lever 227 but whose end left, lowered by a spring not shown, meets a small ramp 242 .support which lifts it, which releases its right end from the grip of the lever after a necessary and sufficient stroke of the rod 238.
A two-arm lever 243 is pivotally mounted on the support 148; its left end, forming a nose 243a, is engaged between the teeth of the pinion 232; by the advance of the pinion 233, also keyed on the axis 233a, the right pitch of this lever, resting on the head 226, is lowered. - Above the lever 243 is suspended a finger 244 biased by a spring 245 As long as the lever 243 remains in its rest position, these members are in the position shown in FIG. 6.
When the pinion 233 is pushed one tooth by the pawl 239, the right arm of the lever 243 lowers, which lowers the head 226. The finger 244, drawn to the left by the spring 245, comes out of a notch. lever 243 in which it was engaged and prevents the right arm of lever 243 from returning to its original position.
The right end of the head 226, pivotally mounted, is raised and, when it is driven by the lever 227, it passes over the cast letters, without driving them. This sink therefore makes its movement to the left empty, and this each time part of the row (column element) is terminated. Thus, the poured column element (s) remain in the composter until the last.
For each part of the row (column), pinion 232 rotates by one tooth; for the end of the line (after the last column), the nose of the lever 243 does not meet any teeth because of a discontinuity @du pinion 232; despite the advance of pinion 232, lever 243 then does not change position; the head 226 is not moved either and, remaining engaged behind the letters 224 which are located in the composter, drives them to the left during the movement of the lever 227.
In the embodiment shown, pinion 232 has twelve teeth and each fourth tooth is missing. To compose rows of three columns, every third tooth would be missing, for rows of two columns, every second tooth. For five columns, we would use a pinion of ten teeth (number divisible by five). The pinion 233, which is not missing any teeth, and advancing with each impulse of the pawl 239, always remains the same.
