Installation for relief printing. The present invention relates to an installation for relief printing, comprising a stamping machine intended to print in relief on metal clichés and a remote control mechanism in which a control strip bearing indications corresponding to the successive operations that the stamping machine must perform cooperates with an escapement mechanism bringing successively these indications into the active position, means controlled by the escape mechanism causing a corresponding actuation of the stamping machine.
According to the invention, this installation is characterized in that the stamping machine comprises control means intended to cause relative movement between the control strip and the escapement mechanism, from one active position to the next, this only after the stamping machine has completed its operation in said first position.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of said embodiment of the installation.

Fig. 12 is a plan view of a. laughing at the plate cart.
Fig. 13 is an end view of the carriage of <B> there </B> fig. 12.
As seen in fig. 1, the installation shown comprises a stamping machine 10 and a remote control mechanism <B> II </B> intended for this machine. The stamping machine 10 comprises a frame comprising a base 12 and two frame members 13 and 14 extending upwardly and supporting the actual stamping mechanism; as already noted above, this machine is of the same general character as those already known. However, the known machines are controlled manually (having a keyboard substantially identical to that of a typewriter of the current type, and being generally controlled in the same way).
It should be noted, however, that the stamping elements of a stamping machine, owing to the nature of the work which they are called upon to perform, are not actuated by the force applied manually to the keys. by the operator, as in the case of a typewriter. The depressing of any key whatsoever only initiates a stamping operation which is carried out by a mechanical control device. This important difference should be kept in mind during the description, since it is the basis of a number of characteristics which are necessarily part of a control mechanism of this type.
While the known machine is controlled manually, the one included in the installation shown is controlled in a completely automatic manner, providing, however, for manual control when this is considered necessary or desirable.
The remote control mechanism 11 operates under the control of a control strip, such as a perforated strip, etc., to actuate certain levers which are linked, for example by Bowden cables, to the various keys and other controls. of the stamping machine. It should be particularly noted that the remote control mechanism 11 is operated periodically under the control of a one-turn clutch 110.
The operation of this clutch will be briefly described below, but it should be noted that, due to mechanical limitations of the operating speed of the stamping machine, the operating cyclic speed of the remote control mechanism is limited to the possibilities of the stamping machine and that the key actuation of the one-turn clutch 110 only occurs when each operation of the stamping machine is completely finished and only then. This arrangement prevents the remote control device from attempting to initiate successive premature stamping machine operations, which would occur if the control mechanism were operated at speeds exceeding that at which the stamping machine can operate. stamp.
The stamping machine is operated by a horizontal shaft 15 extending rearwardly, and which is driven by a toothed wheel 15a, from any suitable source of energy, such as a non-electric motor. shown, and which is multiplied to drive other elements. A central vertical shaft 16, which carries a set of punch-ons-dies 17 (Fig. 2), is driven from the shaft 15 by a bevel gear 18. Between the pinion 18 and the punch assembly - ons-ma.trices 17 is provided a clutch. friction.
A keypad 20 has control keys 21. The punch die set 17 has upper and lower stamping elements for each character to be stamped. Such elements are arranged in pairs and. supported by the assembly 17 driven by friction and. which rotates to place the desired stamping elements in the stamping position. The depression of a character key 21 selecti vely interposes stop elements, which results in placing two stamping elements wise in the stamping station opposite the part of the cliché to be stamped.
Thereafter, the male and female stamping elements forcibly penetrate one another, by means well known in the art, to stamp the metal cliché between them. When the stamping is completed, the stamping elements separate. and the set of said elements begins to rotate again until another stamping operation is initiated by depressing a key 21. A carriage 25 for clichés being stamped is designed to be die placed after the stamping of each character, in a manner similar to that in which the carriage of a typewriter moves.
A space bar, a caps lock key, and a tab key work the same as in a typewriter; the devices by which these operations are accomplished are all well known in the art and need not be described here.
In known installations, the plate carriage was controlled manually, except for the character spacing mentioned above. Thus, the carriage was mounted to move back and forth in front of the stamping elements, but it required the manual introduction of the cliché to be stamped, the manual locking of the latter in the carriage as well as the recall, line spacing and manual unloading of the trolley. In the installation shown, devices allow these operations and certain others to be performed automatically.
At its rear end, the main control shaft 15 carries a spur gear 31 which meshes with a return pinion 32 supported by a pin 33. The latter is mounted on a bracket 34 supported by spring washers 35 and studs 36 on the base 12 of the machine (see fig. 1, 3 and 4). The idler gear 32 meshes with a larger spur gear 37 which is keyed to a shaft 3g. The rear end of this shaft is mounted in the bracket 34 and extends horizontally forward to the front of the machine. The shaft 38 is constantly driven while the stamping machine is in operation and is a power source for various automatic control operations which will be described below.
At its front end, the shaft 38 rotates in two bearings 40 and 40a carried by a support 41 of cross-section fixed by studs 42, 43 to the base 12 (FIG. 3). The ratio of gears 1.8, 31 and 37 is such that the shaft 16 which supports the stamping elements rotates considerably faster than the shaft 38. As a result, the shaft 16 can operate without hindering the automatic operations carried out. under the control of the shaft 38. Consequently, the speed of the latter cannot exceed that of the stamping operations carried out under the control of the shaft 16.
On the shaft 38 are wedged three clutch drums 45, 46 and 47 for the actuation of the various elements which will be mentioned below. It also carries, near its rear end, a cam 48, the role of which will now be described. Each of the clutch bags 45, 46 and 47 is designed to drive an eccentric 51, 52 or 53 which is associated with it (fig. 4) by a one-turn clutch device which can be of any type. well known type, such as, for example, the roller type in which the release of a pawl allows a spring to pull a roller into position to cause an inner member to rotate with a drum 45, 46 or 47 .
Clutches of this type are well known in the art and do not require to be described in more detail. When in use, any of the eccentrics 51, 52 or 53 can be positively connected to the shaft 38 by releasing a pawl 55 (Fig. 5), such a pawl being carried by a lever 56 controlled by a key and articulated. on a shaft 57 which, in turn, is mounted, to. its ends, in the arms extending upwardly of the U-section support 41. The particular lever 56 to which we have just alluded controls the ejection from the machine of a finished cliché. Two other levers 58 and 59, controlled by keys, respectively control the return of the carriage and the advance of a cliché in this carriage.
We will now review the mechanism by means of which these operations are carried out.
Referring to fig. 5, it can be seen that an auxiliary base 61 is fixed, by the studs 42 and by means of additional studs 62 and 64, to the main base element 12. Spacers 65, preferably made of rubber or elastic material, minimize the transmission of vibrations between the various parts. Auxiliary base plate 61 is therefore mounted behind keyboard 20 and somewhat above it, as will be seen with reference to FIG. 6.
On the auxiliary base plate 61 is mounted a bearing 71 for an oscillating shaft 72, this bearing being fixed by studs 73 to the left end of the auxiliary base plate or pedestal 61, as an operator would see it. placed in front of the machine and as shown in fig. 5. On the shaft 72 are wedged a short arm 74 and a long arm 75 both directed upward. The short arm 74 is connected to a link 76 which is provided with an adjustable screw tensioner 77 and an eccentric collar 78 which surrounds the eccentric 5 3 driven by the drum 47 through the intermediary of the mechanism. previously mentioned single-turn clutch. The upper end of the long arm 75 is provided with a link 81 fixed to the latter by a screw 82.
The connecting rod 81 is fixed on a projection 83 carried by a sliding advance element 84 which takes the form of a part of U-section fitting into the upper recess, also of U-section, of an element. fixed advance 86. As can be seen more clearly in FIG. 3, the element 86 is mounted on a horizontal rim 87 of a support 88 which is provided with a wall 89 extending rearwardly and arranged vertically. The wall 89 is fixed by studs 91 to the vertical frame element 13, as shown in FIG. 3.
On the support 88, in addition to the fixed element 86 of <B> U section, </B> is mounted a vertical feed magazine 92 which contains a stack of blanks P of clichés, in position to be fed. to the stamping machine. As can be seen more clearly in fig. 4, the size and shape of this magazine allow it to freely receive such blanks and its right vertical end wall (as seen in figs. 4 and 5) is sufficiently spaced above the edges. of the fixed element 86, of U-shaped section, so that the lower blank P can slide out of the stack by the introduction of projecting elements 84a, provided on the upper edges of the element d 'sliding feed 84.
These parts 84a protrude above the right parts of the element 86 (Fig. 5) by an amount sufficient to come into contact with the lower blank P of the stack in the magazine. As the feed member 84 is driven to the right (Fig. 5), the protrusions 84a push the lower cliché blank P out of the magazine with the right wall of the magazine notched above the edges of the magazine. item 86 (as mentioned above) to allow advancing only one blank draft.
The automatic feed carriage 8.1 wedge-door im ratchet. advance 95 pivotally mounted between its side walls, and a tension spring 96 is attached to it. the. rear part of this pawl to bring its front end up. When the, coming into contact from a clutch to. a turn with the clutch drum 47 forces the eccentric associated with it to be driven by the shaft 38, the lever arm 75 slides the advance element 84 to bring out the blank P , as mentioned above.
The upper edges of the side walls of the element 86 of U section constitute. support rails for the blank in progress, and an element. returned U-section or cover 97 is arranged above these rails, to. right of store 9 \ ?, as seen on the. fig. 5, to guide the blanks as they advance.
The rotation of the eccentric 53 forces the advance mechanism which has just been described to advance a blank P of the plate until it reaches an intermediate position, located .à. halfway between the ma-Pasin and the stamping station, the stack of blanks contained in the magazine being temporarily supported on the raised marginal parts 93 of the automatic feed element 84 located to the left or behind the shoulders 84a, as seen in FIG. 5.
As the feed element 84 moves back to the left (Fig. 5), the raised marginal portions 93 withdraw from under the stack of blanks P and at the same time the pawl 95 moves back under. (and to the left of) the blank P1 which has just been advanced to the intermediate position, as described above. The spring 96 allows the pawl to retract until it releases when it arrives at the rear end of the blank P1 where it rises sharply in position to advance this blank further to the right, when of the following advance movement of element 84.
The arm 74, which is controlled by the eccentric 53 and which causes the operation of the advance mechanism, as has just been described, carries an articulated ramp 101 which, as seen in FIG. 5, is normally biased counterclockwise by a spring 102, to a position where it abuts against a stop pin 103. A pair of electrical contacts 104 and 105 is mounted on the path of this ramp, the upper contact 105 presenting a ramp 106 at its outer or left end, as seen in this figure. When arm 74 moves clockwise, the end of contact 105 simply oscillates ramp 101 to the left, with spring 102 not having enough force to close the contacts.
However, when returning to the left, as seen in fig. 5, the stop axis 103 forces the ramp 101 to positively close the contacts. This operation energizes an electrical circuit connected to a solenoid which actuates the clutch f10 at one turn of the remote control mechanism 11 to advance the recording element, such as a perforated tape, as mentioned above. above, to a new position to allow subsequent detection of the perforations therein, in order to initiate another operation of the firing machine. Consequently, no new control of the mechanism 11 is initiated before the arm 74 has substantially returned to its normal rest position, located on the left, as seen in FIG. 5.
This mode of operation is a particular example of various operations which remain to be described and which are necessitated by the fact that a new operation of the stamping machine must not be started until the current one is substantially completed. In other words, the remote control mechanism is forced to wait for the stamping machine, the massive and rather heavy nature of the working parts of the latter imposing such a limitation on its operating speed. The operation of the one-turn clutch 110 which intermittently drives the remote control mechanism will be described more fully below.
The stamping carriage 25 which, as mentioned above, carries a cli ch P during stamping operations, is supported during its horizontal movement by a rail 112 fixed to the vertical frame elements 13 and 14 by screws 113 and 114, as seen in fig. 4 and 5. This rail comprises a support flange 115 along which can roll rollers 116 and 117 mounted on the carriage 25. A flange 118, facing upward, forms part of the rail 112 and serves to hold the rollers on the roller. ledge 115, as seen more clearly in end views 2 and 3.
This carriage 25 comprises a plate 121 arranged vertically, to which the rollers 116 and 117 are fixed by bolts 122 and spacers 123. On a frame, which includes the plate 121, is mounted horizontally a transverse carriage or carrier carriage. -cliché in the form of a plate 125. This carriage extends forward towards the keyboard 20 of the stamping machine and carries an element. clamp or horizontal plate holder 126, fixed to its upper surface by screws 127 (fig. 10).
The plate-holder element represented in FIG. 10 has a U-shaped jaw 128 which extends rearwardly from the plates 125 and 126 and which can be placed in alignment with the feed rails of member 86, which rails advance along. a cli ché P in the manner previously described. As has been shown in FIG. 11, the jaw 128 includes inwardly facing flanges which support the lower edges of a cliché.
As has been shown in FIG. 10, the plate P comprises a notch N, in the shape of a <B> V, </B> notched in its front edge and the plate holder device 128 comprises a sliding click 129 returned to the rear to come into contact with this notch by a tension spring 130. This spring is fixed between a pin 130a, carried by the click, and a pin 130b, carried by the jaw 128.
There is shown in FIGS. 12 and 13 a variant of the plate holder and, in some cases, this form is preferred, given that the plate P does not need to be notched, as shown in FIG. 10. The support plate 126 'is substantially identical to the support plate 126 shown in FIG. 10 and carries, at its front end, an element 128 ′, of U-shaped section, substantially identical to the element 128 and intended to receive a photograph coming from the advance mechanism. A pawl 132, actuated by a spring, pivots near the left side of the support plate 126 ', as shown at 133, and is normally biased clockwise, as shown. in fig. 12, by a spring 134.
This ratchet has an end 132a, in the form of a ramp, with which comes into contact a blank of the cliché advancing from the left and which rotates the ratchet counterclockwise against the tension of the spring 134 , when the cliché is pushed into the slot. The pawl 132 also has a notch 132b which receives the rear eoin of the cliché, when the latter is completely disposed inside the carriage by the pawl 95 carried by the advance element 84.
Another pawl 135 is hinged near the right or exit end of the carriage on a hinge pin 136 and is biased counterclockwise, as seen in FIG. 12, by a tension spring <B> 137. </B> This pawl has a rounded end 135a, intended to leave the path free when a completed cliché P is found in <B> us </B> se out of the support jaw 128 '. As a result, a plate P is held in the working position during the stamping operations by the two pawls 132 and 135 which prevent the displacement of the plate in the longitudinal direction.
Subsequently, when the cliché has been completely stamped and a new cliché advances in the carriage, the cliché P, by sliding to the right, rotates the pawl 135 against the force of its res out and is ejected into an element. of unloading, of <B> U, </B> section by means and in a manner which will be described below.
The carriage 25 has a frame member which comprises the roller support plate 121 mentioned above and which supports the upper sliding plate 125. As just described, the sliding plate 125 is. fixed the device 128 or 128 ′ serving to receive and hold a cliché while the stamping operations are being carried out therein. The sliding plate 125 comprises racks fixed to its edges facing downwards or which form an integral part thereof, which mesh with pinions, not shown here, but carried by a shaft 141 (FIG. 2). The rotation of the shaft 141 forces the plate 125 to move backwards towards the stamping elements or to move away from them forward as required.
The eccentric 52, mentioned above and shown more clearly in FIG. 4, is designed to be driven by a one-turn clutch of which the drum 46 is part. When the lever of the rear return button 58 of the carriage (fig. 5 and 8) is pressed, this clutch engages and the eccentric 5 <B> 2 </B>, by means of its collar and an adjustable rod 145, moves an articulated arm 146 back and forth, first in an anti-clockwise direction, then clockwise, as seen in fig. 5.
The arm 146 is carried by an oscillating shaft 147 to which it is rigidly connected. The shaft 147 is mounted in two bearings 148 fixed by screws 149 to the auxiliary base 61. Another arm 151 is rigidly attached to the arm 147 and is designed to come into contact with a roller 152 carried by a protruding part 153, extending downwards, provided on the frame of the carriage to bring it back to its initial position, that is to say to the left, as seen in FIG. 5. Spring loaded devices and a spacer mechanism are used to cause the carriage to jerk to the right as the characters are stamped on the plate. The arm 151 serves as a return device behind the carriage.
Devices are also associated with the carriage to force it to space the transverse carriage 125 and the plate holder 126 backwards by a line each time the carriage returns to its initial position by the return device in rear that has just been described. As a result, the operation of the rap pel behind the carriage not only brings it back to its initial position where the wise stamping of the line can be started, but also causes the plate P to be aligned towards the stamping elements as they go. and as successive lines are stamped into it.
On the arm 146 is mounted, so as to be able to pivot, a ramp 154 which is peeled in the direction of clockwise, as seen in FIG. 5, to abut against a stop pin 155 by means of a tension spring 156. A pair of electrical contacts 157 and 158 are closed by the ramp 154 when the arm 146 oscillates to the right after a return back of the cha riot. Closing these contacts establishes an electrical circuit in the same way as contacts 104 and 105 to energize the aforementioned solenoid which engages the one-turn clutch 110 of the remote control mechanism 11.
Thus, when the carriage 25 is pulled back, the remote control mechanism is energized to cause the control strip to perform another movement which actuates the mechanism to begin stamping the next line on the cliché or to initiate. such other operation which may be indicated by the control perforations made in the strip.
The device for performing the alignment of the plate carriage 125 towards the stamping elements, after each rear return, comprises an articulated arm 161 which controls a lever 162, which in turn causes the rotation of the plate. 'shaft 141 (Fig. 2) by a ratchet mechanism and ratchet wheel not shown. A spring plunger 163 serves as a stopper to limit the rear return movement of the carriage to the left (fig. 5). An articulated cam 164 forces the arm 161 to oscillate downwards by the coming into contact of a pin 165 mounted on said arm with the lower ramp of the cam.
As noted above, the carriage moves jerkily to the right as a line of characters is stamped on the plate it carries. A spring plunger 166 serves. stopper to limit the movement of the cart to the right. The plunger 163, mentioned above, as well as the plunger 166, are slidably retained in the [J-shaped support attached to the guide rail 112 by any suitable means, the springs which surround the plungers absorbing the shocks caused by stopping the truck.
The strip which controls the remote mechanism 11 is perforated so as to represent the various elements of a code. The. Elements of the code are intended to initiate operations such as advance of the plate, change from upper to lower case, operation of all character keys, word spacing, carriage return and leading. Carriage backtracking and leading operations are combined in one operation. However, it should be noted that, if desired, a separate mechanism can be provided to perform the line spacing, independently of the return of the carriage.
For this purpose, one could provide an additional key and an additional mechanism with clutch, eccentric, rod and lever, similar to the parts shown at 58, 52 and 46, to move the carriage towards the stamping elements, regardless of its return to the initial position by the lever arm 151.
The tape used in the remote control device 11 also bears coded signs to control the operation of a mechanism, in order to remove the key cliché from the stamping machine. We have now described this mechanism.
The clutch drum 45 is intended to be controlled by a one-turn clutch, not shown, which is identical to the clutches used with the drums 46 and 47 described above. When the cliché ejection key lever 56 is depressed, this clutch forces the eccentric 51 to rotate with the drum 45 in order to complete a complete revolution. An adjustable link 171 connects the collar which surrounds the eccentric 51 to an arm 172 attached to an oscillating shaft 173. The shaft 173 rotates in a support 174 attached by screws 175 to the auxiliary base 61. The shaft 173 is attached. a longer arm 176 which fulfills various functions. The upper part of the arm 176 is folded back towards the mechanism (the stamping to constitute a horizontal part 176a and a free end part 176b facing downwards.
This construction is shown more clearly in figs. 2 and 4 The arm 176 serves to move the cross slide from a position to the stamping elements where the last line on a completed plate has been stamped to an outboard or front line position. The lever is also used to eject a finished cliché from the carriage and bring it to an intermediate station; it further serves to bring a cliché from an intermediate position to a chute through which the cliché can fall into a tamper. When a roller mechanism is used to equalize the printing surface of a finished plate, the ejectors serve to convey the plate to such a mechanism.
Like the arms 74 and 146, the arm 172 carries an articulated cam 177 which is normally biased by a spring 178 to abut against a stop pin 179. This cam serves to close a pair of contacts 181, and 182 towards the end. of an operating cycle of the arm 176 mentioned above. As in the case of contacts 104, 105, 157 and 158, closing (contacts 181 and 182 establishes an electrical circuit to energize the solenoid which controls the one-turn clutch 110 of the remote control mechanism. , the remote control mechanism need only be operated for each successive cycle when the stamping machine substantially completes its operating cycle, since the speed of the stamping machine is a critical factor.
The downwardly extending end portion 176b of the arm 176 is connected to a link 183 attached to a pin 183a which projects downward from a slide member 184 for advancing the cliché. This element is completely identical, both in construction and in operation, to the advance element 84 previously described, thanks to which the clichés coming from a stack are passed through the stamping mechanism. The element 184 serves to extract the clichés from the carriage to the stamping station and to bring them first to an intermediate station and, then, to an unloading station. This element slides in a guide element 186 of U-shaped section, which is identical in its entirety to element 86.
A cantilevered U-section or hood 191 is provided to keep the plates in alignment and to guide them to the unloading station, as shown in FIG. 5. The advance element 181 carries a lever 192 provided at the rear with a. hook; The lever is articulated at 193 and is biased clockwise, as seen in fig. 5, by a tension spring 191, so that the hook 195 provided on the rear or left end of the lever passes under (and engages behind) the rear end of a stamped cliché placed in the carriage.
When the arm 176 moves to the right, as seen in the. fig. 5, the hook. 195 extracts a stamped cliché out of the library 128 or 128 'which holds it in the carriage. This is done against the opposition of the click 129 (fig. 10) or else the retaining member 135 (fig. 12) which serves to maintain the cliché in the carriage and in suitable alignment during the stamping operations. . The hook 195 brings the finished cliché to an intermediate station located approximately halfway between the initial position or left position of the carriage and an ejection chute 197 which brings the cliché to the tamping mechanism which is will describe below.
Before the hook 195 can come into contact with a cliché or remove it from the carriage, the transverse carriage 125 must be extracted outwards, from the stamping elements, to its initial or first line position. , so that the cliché is in alignment with the U-shaped element 186 on which it is ejected. Devices are provided to effect this displacement of the transverse carriage or plate holder 125 which moves the device receiving the plate and which maintains the latter during stamping.
The spring device carried by the carriage 25 not shown here constantly tends to pull the plate carriage 125 outwards, but a ratchet and ratchet wheel mechanism, associated with the shaft 141 which makes it possible to perform the alignment of the carriage 125 towards the stamping elements as and when each line is stamped serves to maintain the plate carriage against the recoil caused by such a spring device. The device for releasing this ratchet and ratchet wheel mechanism comprises a rod 201 (FIG. 5) which is split longitudinally, as shown at 201a, and which engages, so as to be able to slide, on a pin 202 carried. by the arm 176.
At its left end, the split link 201 carries a pin 203 to which is pivotally attached a projecting head 204. When the plate carriage 25 moves to the right, as seen in FIG. 5, during stamping operations, the split rod 201 simply slides on the pin 202. However, when a cliché is finished and needs to be ejected, the movement of the arm 176 to the left (fig. 5) occurs while the carriage is in its right-hand position.
This brings the axis 202 into contact. with the left end of the slot 201a and thus moves the rod 204 to the left, compressing a spring 204b, interposed between a ring 204c, provided on the rod 204, and a frame member 204a in which the latter is sliding rise.
When the arm 176 swings to the left, as seen in fig. 5 and as just described, a taper 204e, provided on the rod 204, strikes a roller 205a provided on the lower surface of a lever 205 and lifts the latter which serves to release the ratchet and wheel mechanism. chet which immobilizes the plate carrier 125 relative to the stamping elements.
By releasing this ratchet and ratchet wheel mechanism, the spring device (carried by the carriage) mentioned above returns the die carriage 125 to. its outward or front-line position and, as arm 176 then sorrel to the right, the cliché that has been stamped is spaced along the top edges of the <B> U </B> 186 that serve as rails on which it slides and under the cover element 191 which retains and guides the cliché along these rails. The cliché is then conveyed to the intermediate station placed between the carriage and the chute 197.
The advance element 184 of the cliché carries, in addition to the hook lever 192, another hook lever 211 which is. articulated at 212 and lifted counterclockwise by the spring 213. The front or right end of the lever 211, as seen in FIG. 5, serves as a pusher to take a snapshot at the intermediate station and bring it to the unloading chute 197, when the arm 176 moves from its extreme left position to its normal right position, as seen in the figure. fig. 5. It will be noted, with reference to fig. 2, that the chute and the guide end 186 are arranged such that when a cliché falls, its rear edge is always turned downwards.
The side walls 215, 216 of the chute 197 converge towards the bottom of the chute, the front or left wall, as seen in FIG. 2, being bent to the left to cover the previously packed clichés when they are pushed out of the chute forwards, along a receiving table 218. As mentioned above, it is possible, if desired, interpose a cylinder device intended for the clichés, not shown, between the intermediate station and the chute 197.
The receiving table 218 on which the stamped clichés are deposited is supported by a bracket 221 fixed by one of the studs 64 and by another stud 222 to the auxiliary base 61. Side walls 225 and 226 are provided along the edges. of the table, as can be seen more clearly in fig. 4 and 5, to keep the clichés in alignment as they advance along the table by means of a pusher 227 which is mounted so as to be able to slide on the rear end of the table 218 and between said walls 225 and 226.
The pusher 227 is actuated by a long lever 231, articulated at 232 to the frame of the stamping machine; it is driven by a reciprocating movement by the cam 48 which, as mentioned above, is fixed to the shaft 38 (Figs. 1 and 4). A roller 234, mounted on the lever 231, is in contact with the cam 48. A link 235 connects the right end of the lever 231 to the pusher or sliding member 227. A tension spring 236 (FIG. 4) is fixed between the pusher 227 and a pin 238 projecting from the table 218. This spring tends to return the pusher to the rear and to maintain the cam roller 234 and the cam 48 in contact.
The tamping mechanism we come from. to describe operates as follows: A stamped cliché falls into the chute 197 by displacement of the automatic advance member 184 and the lever 211 towards the extreme right position, as seen in FIGS. 4 and 5. The pusher 227 is arranged to receive the newly embossed cliché on its upper edge, as shown. shown at P3 (fig. 2), but, given that the pusher moves backwards or to the right, as seen in fig. 2, the cliché falls in front of the pusher head.
Subsequently, when the pusher moves forward, the cliché which has just been received is pushed into stack P4 and the stack moves forward by a distance equal to the thickness of a cliche. Thanks to this device, the clichés coming from the stamping machine are stacked in the same order that they are stamped. <B> It </B> is obvious that the order in which the pictures are stamped by the machine is identical to the order in which the coded signs were prepared on the tape which controls the mechanism 11 serving to actuate the stamping machine.
A block 240 (FIG. 2) can be placed between the side walls of the guide member of the tamper to keep the plates in the vertical position, such a block being able to slide along said guide member as and when as the clichés are packed there.
We will now briefly describe the device which connects the stamping machine to the remote control mechanism and which makes it possible to control the. stamping machine from said. remote control mechanism.
Referring to Figs. 6 to 9, it should be noted that the control mechanism at. distance 11 has a rotating shaft 301 and a clutch mechanism. a turn, a die signed as a whole by 110, which is triggered each time a solé noïde â03 is excited. When the one-turn clutch is. engaged, a control strip (not shown) advances one notch to a feeler device such as electrical contacts, which detects the presence of one or more perforations made in the control strip.
Depending on the perforations detected, a group of Longitudi nally movable bars 305 are selectively moved to place notches made in their lower edges above certain selected control levers 306 which are articulated on a shaft 307. The latching mechanism 308 lies. which normally keeps the levers 306 down, is released and one of the selected levers 306 can be raised under the action of a spring 309, thanks to a combination of notches made in the various bars 305. In rising, the lever 306, which is provided with a Bowden cable 311, pulls this cable, the other end of which is fixed, for example, to a character key 21, as shown in FIG. 7.
There is only one lever 306 for each character key 21 on the keyboard. In addition, some levers 306 do not control a character key, but perform other functions. For example, a lever 306 is provided to control the spacer bar 321 by an electrical device. In this case, two electrical contacts 322, 323 close when the bar 306 used to control the bar is allowed to be raised. spacing 321, and the closing of these contacts establishes an electrical circuit serving to energize a solenoid which actuates the spacer bar by any suitable connecting device, such as for example a Bowden cable 325.
Similarly, the caps lock key, which requires more energy to operate than can be supplied by either of the springs 309 and lever 306 with its Bowden cable, is controlled by a solenoid by closing. two contacts similar to the contacts 322 and 323 shown in FIG. 9.
Additional control levers 306 are provided to control the keys 56, 58 and 59 which control a single-turn clutch, for example, to advance a cliché in the carriage, to drive backwards and ensure the line spacing. carriage, then unload the completed snapshots, as described above. Each of these levers is controlled by a Bowden cable 331 attached to a suitable lever 306. The sheath of such a cable 331 can be fixed to a plate 332 fixed to the auxiliary base 61, as shown in FIG. 8. Of course, the one-turn clutch 110 which drives shaft 301 is engaged by solenoid 303 whenever any stamping machine operation has been or is about to be completed.
A mechanical device such as a Bowden cable link (not shown) with a latching pawl 340 (Fig. 9) can be used in addition to solenoid 303 to engage the clutch. The solenoid controls the same pawl. Control levers 306 are returned to their lowered engaged position after each operation of clutch 110.
As mentioned above, the stamping machine has a mechanism for returning to its initial raised position any key 21 which has been pressed, after operation of the stamping elements, when the depression of this key has been completed or substantially completed. A part of this return mechanism is shown at 350 (FIG. 7) and it is used to control the clutch 110 and to initiate a new progression of the strip after each stamping operation, so as to present new command signs to the <B> command mechanism for </B> the next operation.
This return mechanism to the initial position comprises an oscillating lever 351, controlled by a link 352 (FIG. 7) using a mechanism not shown. The hub-shaped part 353 of the arm 351 is drilled and tapped to receive a finger 354 which can be screwed into the hub-shaped part and immobilized in position by a lock nut 355. The finger 354 has an extension 356 which is designed to close two electrical contacts 357 (fig. 6). Closing of these contacts energizes solenoid 303 to engage clutch 110 in the manner described above.
Although the operation of the installation shown is obvious from the foregoing description, we will. However, the summary is summarized as follows: A control strip (not shown) is advanced in the remote control mechanism 11, and its first code element causes the operation of the feed device 84 in pictures, to bring a shot P coming from the stack to the station Pl located between the stack and the carriage which is in the stamping position.
When starting up the installation, a second operation is necessary to bring the plate P from the intermediate station P1 into the carriage, where it is retained by appropriate clamping jaws 128 or 128 'which can be either of the type shown in fig. 10 and 11, or that shown in FIGS. 12 and 13. As soon as a plate has been brought to the carriage, a single operation of supplying the plates is then sufficient to replace it, the supply line being kept full until the reserve of plates is exhausted.
When a cliché has been placed in the carriage, this carriage is first arranged in such a way that it presents the part of the cliché where the first character of the first line is to be stamped at the location of the po Stamping sition of all stamping elements. If, as is usually the case, the first character is a capital letter, the capital locking mechanism of the stamping machine is activated first. The new cycle was initiated by closing the contacts 104 and 105 after completing the advance of a cliché in the carriage.
The operation of locking the caps in itself therefore serves to initiate a new cycle of the shaft 301 of the mechanism (the remote control via the one-turn clutch 110, to bring the first element of character code carried by the tape to the feeler mechanism When this occurs, a control lever 306 of the feeler and control mechanism is lifted to pull its Bowden cable and thereby actuate the appropriate character key 21 on the keyboard As described above, the stamping machine key return mechanism is used to engage the one-turn engagement 110 of the control mechanism after each character has been finished.
As a result, the stamping of a single character initiates the movement of the control strip for the next character, and. this process continues regardless of the opera tion to be controlled in the screed machine. All operation of the stamping machine ends with the initiation of a further movement of the web in the control mechanism. distance. Thus, the wise stamping of a line of characters on a cliché continues automatically until the end of a line is reached.
Once a complete line has been stamped, the key lever 58 is operated in the same manner as the key lever 59 by means of a Bowden cable 331 connected to a lever 306. The operation of the key lever 58 is used to force the cart to return to. its initial position, and the plate carriage 125 is also moved by a line towards the stamping elements, as has been previously described. Then the second line is. stamped, and this process is repeated for the third and, if desired, for the fourth line and following.
