The frame of the machine shown comprises mainly a horizontal base plate 10 mounted on suitable feet 11. Numerous uprights or brackets are mounted on this plate as will be described below with respect to the particular mechanisms supported by these members. .
We will briefly refer to the general arrangement of the most important mechanisms of the machine. The keypad 20 (fig. 1) is located at the front of the machine above a protrusion 13 of <B> there </B> base plate, this keypad being composed of suitable keys and levers. 21 extending rearwardly and pivoting on a bar 253 as will be described later.
At the rear of the key levers is the mounted plate carriage 30. to move laterally in either direction from a central position and arranged to support a plate d which moves between a series of male and female dies mounted on a suitable die carrier 160. On both sides on the other hand, two electromagnets 80 are arranged which actuate a mechanism suitable for moving the carriage from its central rest position to the side where the actuated electromagnet is located.
The operation of the key levers excites one or the other of the electromagnets so as to move the carriage, and the raised rear end of the key lever serves as a stop for this carriage, which forces it to come and place. the plate between the dies in a position that corresponds to the lowered character key.
As the carriage stops, either of the cam face lifters 60 (Figs. 3 and 11) is lifted by the raised rear end of the key lever and this produces the lift. a universal bar which, by means of a suitable mechanism, unlocks the clutch 70 (fig. 12), the latter performing a half-rotation and, in this action, also turning the cam by half a turn 120 (fig. 2) which actuates levers 132 and 133 carrying push plates 135,
which plates act on pressure blocks 140 and 141 located between the push plates and the dies and supported laterally with respect to the plate carriage. This therefore has the effect that the two dies corresponding to the lowered key move towards each other to emboss the plate.
After the stamping operation, an appropriate snap-in mechanism, generally designated 180 (fig. 6), moves the plate holder device relative to the base of the carriage to the left of the operator by one. distance corresponding to the space of a character, while the carriage returns to its central rest position, so that the next stamping action takes place at a space (the character it, right of the stamped character.
The keyboard is of the character change key type in which each key corresponds to a series of characters. This is made possible, in the present machine, by providing two sets of male dies and two sets of corresponding female dies, the sets being mounted one behind the other in the die holder which is arranged to be movable in one. forward-backward direction to bring one or other of the sets within reach of the push-button mechanism.
Appropriate mechanisms are provided to lock a lowered key in its lowered position until the completion of the sludge operation and to unlock it at that time. A mechanism is also provided for effecting the return of the plate holder device one space at a time, which makes it possible to make corrections in the event that incorrect keys have been struck. -These details and many others will be explained later.
Reference will now be made to FIGS. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8. The plate A is carried by two jaws 31 and 32 of the plate holder device. The jaw 31 is a horizontal plate mounted on a slide 33, which the jaw 32 pivots on the jaw 31 due to the fact that it supports an oscillating shaft 34 passing through this jaw 31. Torsion springs 35 tend to maintain the jaws closed against each other to clamp the plate. A suitable rim 36 provided on the movable jaw provides a convenient member for manually lifting it to release the plate.
The set of jaws is movable from front to back, relative to the slide 33 which carries the lower jaw with a view to placing the plate in a suitable position for carrying out the stamping along different lines. The jaw 31 rigidly carries two bars 38 which slide through the transverse slide 33. This jaw also carries a rack 40 with which engages a pinion 41 mounted on a short shaft carrying a button 43 at its end. A ball 44 (Figs. 3 and 6) subjected to the pressure of a spring behaves like a retaining member preventing the pinion and the rack from being inadvertently moved.
The plate is manually brought to the desired position, this is obtained by turning the knob 43 so as to bring the suitable area of the plate to the stamping position. When a line is completed, it is rotated. the button of one or more teeth to bring the plate to the correct position for a new line.
The transverse slide 33 carrying the jaws with which it constitutes the plate holder is mounted to slide on ut) sliding block 50 which is moved laterally by the actuated solenoid and which is stopped by the aforementioned key lever. The mounting of the cross slide 33 on the block is such that lateral movement can occur between them to allow the plate to be moved to the left for each character space, as will be described below. in detail, but, to effect the positioning of the plate in a manner corresponding to the lowered key, the transverse slide 33 and the block 50 operate as a single piece.
The block 50 is mounted to slide on a fixed bar 53 and carries gaets 54 at the front rolling on a track formed by a groove provided in a fixed bar 64. Two coil springs 55 surround the bar 53 between the opposite sides. block 50 and the two consoles 56 and <B> 57 </B> which support the bar 53. These springs are balanced with respect to one another and have the role of bringing the carriage to its central position immediately that it is set and liberty after having been put in one or the other direction.
We will now describe 1e_ mechanism used to move the block 50. On either side of the keyboard are arranged two frames 81 supported by the plate. frame 10 and carrying the electromagnets 80 which act on a core consisting of a transverse bar 82. This bar is connected by a connecting rod 83 to a lever 84 which pivots via its front end 85 on a suitable upright 86 of the frame and the rear end of which is forked at 87 (fig. 5) and embraces a block 88 pivoting on an axis 89 carried by a front extension 52 of the block 50.
Note that the right half of the 2: 1 key lever series energizes the right electromagnet 80 and the left half energizes the left electromagnet 80.
The closing of the circuits of the electromagnets, with a view to their excitation, can be carried out in any convenient manner. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show, below each group of key levers, a bracket 90 arranged to be lowered by each of the levers of this group and located above a pusher 91 which is normally raised by a spring 92 , but which, when it is lowered, is arranged to produce the contact of two terminals 93 which determine the passage of the current to the corresponding solenoid.
At the same time as the lowering of the front end of the key lever energizes the corresponding solenoid and produces the displacement of the block 50 in this direction, the rising rear end of this lever stops this block in a lateral position corresponding to the key down, the block carrying a mechanism, which will be described, which is engaged with this raised rear end.
Within 11g. 5 and 11, it can be seen that the block 50 carries two stop members 100 which are arranged to engage with any raised key lever, as shown in the case of the lever 21 @ of FIGS. 11 and 15. These stops 100 are carried by bars 101 which are mounted to slide in the block 50 and are normally pulled fully outwards by compression springs 103 surrounding the bars and compressed between the blocks and suitable nuts. 104 mounted on the bars.
This allows the stops to have limited inward movement under elastic action, providing an absorbent shock absorber. the shock that occurs when the plate is stopped by meeting the stopper with the raised key lever.
After meeting the stop with the push button, the block is locked in this position due to the fact that the corresponding push button 60 rises above the push button lever (due to the bevelled lower surface button) and falls behind this lever. The upward movement of the push button 60 determines the action of the clutch as will be explained below.
The two aforementioned pushers 60 are mounted in vertical slides of the block 50 between its end walls and two intermediate partitions 51. These pushers are located directly below a universal bar 61 which is arranged across the machine and pivots at 62. (fig. 12) on two consoles 63 mounted on the fixed transverse bar 64 supporting the front end of the block 50. The universal bar is connected at one of its ends by a connecting rod 66 to a lever 67, the rear end of which is is normally engaged with clutch 70 and keeps it disengaged.
Therefore, each time either of the pushers 60 is raised due to the fact that the carriage comes to. operating position, the clutch is automatically released.
The drawing shows a main drive pulley 71 receiving its control through the insertion of a suitable belt. This pulley is idle on the main shaft 72 which is journalled in the bearings of the uprights 73 and 74, and it is connected so as to actuate the stamping pushers as will be described later. The pulley can be coupled with the main shaft by the following clutch mechanism: On the shaft -j2 (fig. 12, 13 and 11) is pinned laterally to the pulley a clutch disc 7 5 arranged at the side. inside a ring 76 bolted to the side of the pulley.
On the periphery of the clutch disc are notches 77 in which are mounted rollers 78 which, when released, are arranged to establish wedging coupling between the clutch disc and the clutch disc. ring 76. The rollers are normally kept away from this jamming position, against the action of springs 79 tending to jam them, by pins 110 carried by a ring 111 which is provided with two ears diametrically opposed 112. This ring 111 is held in place against the face of the clutch disc by a disc 113 fixed to the clutch disc. .
Each ear 112 is arranged to be stopped by a pin 68 provided at the end of the lever 67 which is connected to the aforementioned universal bar 61. Therefore, the mechanism normally maintains gaets 78 away from the wedging position between the clutch disc and the pulley. When one of the pushrods 60 lifts the universal bar 61, the connecting rod 66 pivots downwardly the rear end of the lever 67 and unlocks the clutch ring 111. The springs 79 then force the rollers to jam, which immediately determines the rotation of the clutch with the drive pulley.
Shortly after the clutch lug 112 has separated from the pin 68, the pusher 60 falls off due to dropping the rear high end of the key lever; the spring 69, then acting on the connecting rod 66, pulls the front end of the lever 67 downwards and raises the pin 68 on the path of the other. clutch ear 112. This automatically stops the rotation of the clutch and the shaft at the end of a half revolution.
The main shaft 72 is arranged to actuate the cam 120 which actuates the stamper push. It is convenient to place this cam 120 on an intermediate shaft 121 parallel to the shaft 72 and coupled with it by pinions 123 and 124. This intermediate shaft is mounted in the consoles 73 and 125 of the frame and carries the cam 120 between these consoles. These consoles carry two shafts 130 and 131 on which are mounted heavy arms 132 and 133 each carrying at its rear end several rollers 134 mounted in recesses of the arms and arranged to rest on the cam 120.
The front ends of these heavy arms carry adjustable bars 135 locked against the end of the arms and precisely adjusted in position by locking screws 136 mounted in the arms. These bars 135 are arranged to act on the pressure blocks 140 and 141 which are carried by the carriage and rest between the bars and the stamped dies only chosen.
The block 140 (Fig. 3) is carried by a leaf spring 142 fixed to a bracket 143 having the shape of an inverted <B> U </B>, which bracket is mounted on the block 50. The block of spacing 141 is carried by a leaf spring 145 also fixed to the block 50. This spring is fixed to the block in the present example by means of two bolts 147 and 148 which leave directly behind the block sufficient space to mount. the individual character spacing mechanism which will be described.
The stamping dies come in four sets comprising an anterior series of 150 male dies, a posterior series of .151 male dies placed directly behind the anterior series, an anterior lower series of 152 female dies and a posterior series of. female matrices 153 placed directly below the corresponding male matrices. All these dies are capable of smoothing vertically in a support or die holder 160. This die holder comprises two transverse bars 161 and 162 connected at their ends to support blocks 163, 164 with which they constitute an open rigid frame.
The dies are normally held in the non-operating position in their support by means of springs 165 constituted by comb teeth housed in the notches of said dies. The common head of these springs is fixed to a rib 166 of a transverse bar using a strap 168 bolted to said bar. The construction is the same for each of the four sets of matrices. The movement of the dies outwards under the return action of the springs is limited by cover bars 169 formed by a rectangular frame fixed to the bars 161 and 162.
Fig. 3 shows the anterior dies in their operating position. opposite the aforementioned spacers and pushbars. To bring the posterior dies to the operating position, it is sufficient to move the entire die holder forward. This is done by a character change key and linkage mechanism shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
As shown in fig. 1, there are two change keys 170 which are mounted on them. forward angled ends 171 of a swivel bracket 172 to 173 on appropriate brackets 174 rising from the base plate. To the lower part of the caliper are connected two connecting rods 175 extending to the rear end and respectively connected at their rear end to two levers 176 pivoting at an intermediate point of their length on consoles 73 and 125 and pivot. both by their upper ends on the end blocks of the die holder. A suitable resent 178 tends to hold the parts in the position of FIGS. 2 and 3 in which
the anterior dies occupy the operating position. However, when either of the change keys is lowered, the die carrier moves forward to bring the posterior die sets to the operating position.
As previously mentioned, the jaws which carry the plate during stamping are, after stamping of any kind, driven to the left relative to the block carrying the plate by a distance corresponding to the width of the character, so that the next stamped character is placed in the appropriate place immediately to the right of the preceding character. The mechanism for carrying out this training is generally designated as 180 and will be described below with reference to FIGS. 3, 6 and 8.
On the pin 147 which is integral with the block 50 is mounted a ratchet wheel 181; laterally to this wheel there is a plate 182 which small slide vertically and which is guided due to the fact that it

<tb> to arrive <SEP> ii <SEP> its central <SEP> position <SEP>, <SEP> the <SEP> block <SEP> located 1o further forward falls into the space between the two bars 206 and acts on the end of the bar towards which the carriage moves, pushing its end slightly while compressing the corresponding spring 208 which surrounds the rod 204. At the moment when this action takes place, the other block 210 falls into the space behind the most forward block.
The parts having been moved a short distance beyond the center, the compressed spring reacts and returns the carriage to its central position in which the other block 210 contacts the other head 205. The return movement which would be liable to occur beyond said center is thus counteracted by the other spring 208. The carriage is thus almost instantaneously brought to rest in a gentle manner and is held by the two heads 205 in its central position.
The aforementioned cam lugs 190 which actuate the ratchet rotating plate 182 are carried by the two heads 205, so that if the carriage moves past the center, the corresponding lug 190 is driven by it and the plate 182 does not. can not fall.
Fig. 8 shows a lock block 210 in the position it occupies just after it has been lifted out of the central notch and before it has been placed sideways over one of the bars 206. In the normal position , the sliding block 215 described below occupies a position located further forward than that shown in FIG. 8 and leaves a space above it into which the blocks 210 can fall.
As shown in fig. 8, there is on the rear end of each key lever 21 a tab 221 which is arranged to act on the folded end 222 of a uni verselle bar 223 pivoting at 224 on an upright of the frame. "This universal bar is located directly in front of the sliding block 215, this block being pushed towards it by a spring 216. When the machine stops after stamping a character, the locking blocks 210 occupy a lowered position above the constricted portion 217 of the blocks 215, as seen in Fig. 3, and the carriage is thus locked in its central position.
However, when the next key is struck, a tab 221 carried by the rising rear end of its lever acts as a cam on the end of the universal bar 223 and pushes this bar backwards. so that it itself pushes the sliding block 215 backwards <<against the action of the spring 216. As a result, the camming surface 218 (fig. 8) of said block rises upwards. sliding on the lower front angle of the blocks 210 and frees these blocks from the space they occupy between the heads 205. In this movement, a lug 214 provided at the lower edge of each block 210 engages in a corresponding notch of the block 215 directly in front of surface 218.
This action is sufficient to prevent block 215 from returning to its normal forward position after the rear end of the key lever has been raised enough that tab 221 separates from the folded end 222 of universal bar 223.
As soon as the tab 221 of the key lever has separated from the universal bar, a spring 226 (fig. 15) swings this bar forward, so that its upper end 222 passes below the tab. 221, which keeps the key lever in this position. The engagement of the pins 214 in the notches of the block 215 prevents this block from following the universal bar until the moment when the carriage has been moved sideways by the solenoid by a sufficient distance to disengage the blocks 210 from the block 215. Spring 216 then pushes block 215 forward to its normal position.
To prevent the universal bar 223 from keeping the actuated key lever in the position to which it has been brought, a mechanism is provided, shown in figs. 2, 5 and 15, whereby the return movement of one of the stamping levers locks the universal bar. At the front end of the lower stamping lever 133 is fixed an arm 230 extending forwards and carrying at its front end a pawl 31 pushed forward by a spring 232 and provided with a tooth 233. arranged to rise above rrrr rear arm 234 of universal bar 223.
The stamping movement of the arm 133 brings the pawl to the position (Fig. 15. When the stamping arms then separate under the action of the spring 139., when the cam 120 allows this action, the arm 230 drives the pawl 231 down and pushes the arm 234, which has the effect of pivoting the universal bar 223 rearwardly and unlocking the key. When the pawl reaches its lowest position, a fixed console 236 acts on the key. him in the manner of a cam so as to move it away from the arm 234 of the universal bar.
In order to allow the beginning of each stamped character line to be placed in the desired position, for example so that the successive lines are arranged in a staggered manner, an extension 240 is provided on the pawl 184 (fig. 1 and 6). por as a key 241 at its end. Lowering this key disengages the ratchet and thus allows the plate holder device to be moved manually in either direction on block 50, as desired.
This not only makes it possible to choose the position of the point where the line begins, but, in addition, allows the recall of the plate holder, in turn allowing to delete, by flattening it an incorrectly typed character and to strike another character in its place. To enable this deletion of an incorrect character, two flat-faced dies may be provided which are actuated by a suitable key on the keyboard, although usually it will suffice to type the correct character immediately over the incorrect character.
In order to allow the machine to leave spaces between the stamped characters without taking the time required for the operation of the stamping mechanism, which would operate without acting, a special construction is provided at the rear end of the spacer bar lever. which will be described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 16.
The spacer bar 250 is mounted on two levers 271 and 252. The lever <B> 252 </B> is disposed at the rear of the common pivot bar 253 (fig. 16) and is equipped with a sort. rear end of a tab 255 intended to act on the universal bar 223 and to rotate it rearwardly to unlock the block 50. The tab 2; ï5 is such that it holds the bar 223 rearward until when the space bar is unlocked rusty.
The lever '.'. 52 carrying the spacer bar is cut out at its upper rear end as seen at 256 (the way that, when in its highest position, this bar is not placed on the path of the stops 100 and of the pushers 60. However, the space bar actuates the electro-airnant5, so that, as soon as the button has been lowered, the carriage begins to move and that, as soon as it moves, the plate 1.82 activating the ratchet separates from the ears forming Carmelites 190 (fig. 6) and the pawl 185 descends and engages with a new tooth of the ratchet.
As soon as the operator removes the finger from the spacer bar, the spring \? 58 returns the bar and, as the electromagnet circuit is open, the corresponding spring 55 returns the carriage to. its central position. At the same time, unlocking the space bar lever unlocks the universal bar 223 which swings forward, and this allows the sliding block <B> 2 </B> 15 (fig. 8) to return to its position. before. by allowing the blocks 210 arranged in the carriage to fall into the central retaining space, between the bars 206.
The mechanics of the machine shown are relatively simple and are designed as seen from their mounting in a very connected machine box. It is very easy to insert a clean metal blank to be stamped into the jaws and to adjust the position of this blank as desired to start the operation and it is then sufficient to press the keys to write a line of stamped characters, with the operator <B> having both </B> two hands free to operate the keys.
Using the control button, he can then bring the plate to the position which is suitable for a new line and move it sideways, if he wishes, by lowering the ratchet release button; and so on, until the plate is completed. At the end of the operation, the jaws are separated and the plate is removed manually, this plate then being able to easily be introduced into a suitable support such as that shown at B in FIG. 17.
