Abstract

L'invention porte sur un reformeur à plasma d'arc pour créer un combustible utile, tel que le méthanol, à l'aide de l'un quelconque parmi le méthane, les déchets solides urbains, les déchets de ferme ou de forêt, le charbon ou la roche charbonneuse provenant de la production de schiste bitumeux, les hydrocarbures pétrochimiques, (toute charge contenant du carbone), l'eau et/ou des eaux d'égouts urbains, en tant que matière source. Un plasma d'arc à température élevée dépolymérise la matière de source en atomes, ce qui, lors d'un refroidissement partiel, crée un courant de gaz riche en CO et H2 (gaz de synthèse). Des étages subséquents de filtre moléculaire et de catalyseur dans le système permettent d'éliminer les contaminants et de produire le combustible de sortie. Le système est à boucle fermée en ce qui concerne la production de gaz de synthèse en ce qu'il recycle le gaz non converti résiduel et même les gaz d'échappement si on le désire. La grande quantité de chaleur produite est calculée et convertie en énergie électrique à l'aide d'un cycle de Rankine de CO2 supercritique, conduisant à des rendements potentiellement élevés.
