Abstract
Un reformador de arco de plasma para crear un combustible útil, tal como metanol, usando cualquiera de metano, residuos sólidos municipales, residuos forestales o agrícolas, roca de carbón o carbonizada de la producción de esquisto bituminoso, hidrocarburos petroquímicos, (cualquier carbono que contiene carga), agua y/o aguas residuales municipales, como el material fuente. Un arco de plasma a alta temperatura despolimeriza el material fuente en átomos que tras un enfriamiento parcial crea una corriente de gas rica en CO y H2 (gas de síntesis) . Las etapas posteriores de filtro molecular y catalizador en el sistema retiran los contaminantes y producen el combustible de salida. El sistema es de circuito cerrado respecto de la producción de gas de síntesis en que recicla el gas residual no convertido e incluso los gases de escape. La gran cantidad de calor producida se captura y convierte en energía eléctrica usando un ciclo Rankin CO2 supercrítico que provoca rendimientos potencialmente altos.
