A invenção refere-se a um método para formação de camadas funcionais em um substrato inorgânico ou orgânico, no qual a) um plasma de baixa temperatura, uma descarga corona, radiação de alta energia e/ou um tratamento retardante de chama é feito agir no substrato inorgânico ou orgânico, b) 1) pelo menos um iniciador ativável ou 2) pelo menos um iniciador ativável e pelo menos um composto etilenicamente insaturado é/são aplicados na forma de um fundido, solução, suspensão ou emulsão, ao substrato inorgânico ou orgânico, estando incorporado no iniciador ativável e/ou no composto etilenicamente insaturado, pelo menos um grupo controlador de função, que provoca que os substratos tratados adquiram as propriedades de superfície desejadas, e c) o substrato revestido é aquecido elou é irradiado com ondas eletromagnéticas, o substrato assim adquirindo as propriedades de superfície desejadas. A invenção refere-se também a substratos revestidos de acordo com o método e a seu uso.
