EMI7.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

EMI1.1
Process for dyeing polYhydrous materials.
The Applicant has discovered that, on polyhydroxylated materials, in particular on cellulosic textile products, for example cotton or regenerated cellulose, dyes which are solid in washing are obtained if the materials to be dyed are impregnated with aqueous solutions.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
azo dyes or couplers, which contain at least one isothiocyanate group and at least one acidic group making the product soluble in water, then subjecting the materials so impregnated in the presence of a basic substance to heat treatment and by reacting the materials, to which a coupler has been attached, with a diazotized amine in aqueous solution.
As dyes suitable for carrying out the process of the invention, mention may be made, for example, of dis- or monoazole dyes. These dyes are readily available by causing thiophosgene to act on azo dyes, which contain a primary amino group, preferably bonded to an aromatic nucleus and at least one strongly acidic and solubilizing group, in particular a sulfonic group. Examples of aminoazo ± dyes Suitable examples include those of the benzene-azo-benzene, benzeneazo-diphehyl, benzene-azo-naphthalene, or naphthalene-azonaphthalene series, or those obtained by coupling a diazotized aniline with an acetoacetanilide or with a heterocyclic compound , which contains an enolizable keto group, for example on a pyrazolone.
A large number of such dyes are known and are obtained by coupling a diazotized amine with a coupling compound.
As examples of disazo compounds, mention may be made of those originating from the following amines:

When couplers are used which do not contain free amino groups, the diazo or coupler should contain a group which can be converted to an aminogenic group, for example an -NO2 or acylamino group, the latter can be converted by coupling. to a -NH2 group.
It is possible to use both metalliferous compounds as well as metal complexes of azo dyes, in particular c'o-dihydroxyazo dyes, for example those which contain, for one mole of metal, such as chromium, cobalt or copper, 1 to 2 moles of a
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
monoazo dye bound as a complex.
Instead of azo dyes, couplers can also be used, which contain at least one isothiocyanate group and at least one sulfonic group, for example the following:
EMI7.1
2-isothiocyanate-5-hydroxy-naphthalene-7-sulfonic acid, 2-isothlocyanate-8-hydroxy-naphthalene-7-sulfonic acid, 1-isothiocyanate-8-hydroxy-naphthalene-3,6 -disulfoniq 1-isothiocyanate acid 8 - hydroxy-naphthalene-4,6-disulfoniq and the impregnated material can be treated after attachment of; coupling by the aqueous solution of the diazonium salt of one of the compounds to be diazotized above enumerated, thereby producing the coupling on the fiber resulting in the formation of the azo dye.
The reaction of thiophosgene with aminoazo dyes or couplers containing amino groups is advantageously carried out using the aqueous solution of the sodium salts of these products. It is however recommended to use a small excess, for example about 10%. of thiophosgene The reaction proceeds already at room temperature. However, it is advantageous to heat the reaction mixture, preferably to a temperature not exceeding 60.
The isothiocyanate formed is advantageously separated from the reaction medium, by adding inorganic salts soluble in water, in particular chloride.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
sodium or sodium sulfate,
In accordance with the invention, the dyeing of the dyeing material is carried out in aqueous saline solutions, preferably at a moderate temperature and in the presence of a basic substance. As basic substances. it is possible, for example, to use those which exhibit a fairly pronounced alkaline reaction, preferably inorganic products, such as trisodium phosphate, sodium carbonate, potassium cyanate and especially the hydroxides of alkali metals or of sodium. alkaline earth metals, such as sodium or potassium hydroxide.
The amount of the above-mentioned acid-binding agent to be used can vary between widely spaced limits. It is advisable to use an amount such that a solution having a pH value of at least 10 is obtained. Solutions are preferably used which contain at least 0.5 g of a hydroxide per liter. alkali metal
The material to be dyed is impregnated with the dye solution or the coupler solution, advantageously by means of padding.
For this purpose, the goods to be dyed are impregnated with the aqueous solution of the dye, preferably cold or at a moderate temperature, and expressed as usual; the procedure is advantageously so that the impregnated product retains Or5 at 1.3 part of its initial weight of the dye solution.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
After the impregnation, one proceeds to the fixing of ..
. dyes or, respectively, constituents of these dyes on the goods impregnated with the solution of the dye or of the respective constituent o For this purpose, the impregnated materials can be subjected, for example, possibly after drying prior and when the impregnation solution does not contain inorganic acid-binding agents, to a treatment with alkaline aqueous solutions of inorganic acid-binding agents, which are at least as alkaline as sodium carbonate, for example in by means of a saline solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, working hot or cold and heating for a short period of time by means of steam or, - for example, in a stream of hot air or on a heated cylinder.
When using impregnation baths which are practically neutral and do not contain products capable of yielding alkali, the goods can be allowed to stay, if desired, for a prolonged time before carrying out the fixing. which may constitute an advantage depending on the arrangement of the devices available.
Instead of proceeding to the fixing using a separate bath of an alkaline substance, it is possible to add to the impregnation solution, from the start, alkaline mineral substances or agents capable of releasing alkali, , for example sodium carbonate, and subjecting the impregnated materials,
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
without intermediate treatment in an alkaline substance bath and without intermediate drying, directly to vaporization or heat treatment.
In accordance with the process of the invention, the abovementioned dyes or the constituents of these dyes can also be applied by printing to the goods to be dyed, instead of applying them by impregnation. For this purpose, for example, a printing color is used which contains, in addition to the usual printing auxiliaries, for example wetting or thickening agents, at least one of the dyes mentioned above and a substance which exhibits potential alkalinity, that is to say a substance which is capable of yielding, for example under the effect of heat, an acid binding agent.
As such substance, sodium bicarbonate is mentioned here. When printing colors which do not contain such agents are used, the printed material is subjected to treatment with an alkaline substance, preferably in a strongly saline solution of an alkali metal carbonate or , advantageously, in a strongly saline solution of an alkali metal hydroxide or of a solution of an alkaline earth metal hydroxide and then under the effect of heat, optionally in the presence of steam. water.
When the printing color already contains an inorganic acid-binding agent or a mineral substance
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
The effect of heat as alkaline as sodium carbonate, it is not necessary to carry out, before heating or before vaporizing, the treatment with an alkaline substance of the printed goods.
In accordance with the process described above, very valuable, nourished and generally very solid dyes are obtained on polyhydroxylated materials, in particular materials based on cellulose and with a fibrous structure. presence of water and good resistance to light.
In certain cases, it may be advantageous to subject the dyes obtained in accordance with the process to a subsequent treatment. Thus, one proceeds, for example, advantageously to soaping the dyes obtained; such a subsequent treatment makes it possible to eliminate the amounts of dye which are not completely fixed.
In the non-limiting examples below, the parts and percent are understood, unless otherwise indicated, by weight and the temperatures are indicated in degrees centigrade.

A cotton fabric is impregnated with this solution at 20 and on the scarf and the surplus liquid is squeezed out, so that the fabric retains 75% of its weight of the colorant solution. The goods thus impregnated are dried and then again impregnates at room temperature with a solution which contains, per liter, 10 g of sodium hydroxide and 300 g of sodium chloride, expressed to a content of 75% liquid and vaporized for 60 seconds at 100 -101.
The fabric is then rinsed, treated with a 0.5% solution of sodium bicarbonate, rinsed, washed for a quarter of an hour in a 0.3% solution of a nonionic detergent at boiling, rinsed again and dried. A bluish-red dye is thus obtained which is very fast to washing.

EXAMPLE 2
1 part of the dye used in Example 1 is dissolved by adding 1 part of pyridine, 2 parts of anhydrous sodium carbonate and 10 parts of urea in 100 parts of water. This solution is impregnated onto the cotton fabric scarf and the excess liquid is squeezed out so that the fabric retains 75% of its weight of the dye solution. The goods thus impregnated are dried at 20-25, then treated with heat for 6 minutes at 140 in a hot air chamber. The fabric is rinsed and soaped for a quarter of an hour in a boiling solution which contains 0.3% of a nonionic detergent and 0.2% of trisodium phosphate. After rinsing and drying, a bluish red dye is obtained, of good wash fastness.
