<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The damage caused to motor vehicles very frequently results from impacts between the vehicle in question and another vehicle or any obstacle, for example a wall or a post, during approach maneuvers in view of the garage or the parking of the vehicle or of other maneuvers performed in a confined space.
The main object of the invention is to prevent accidents of this kind, by applying, on at least one bumper of the vehicle, a device of simple and economical construction and assembly, which actuates a signal, preferably the vehicle's warning device, as soon as an encounter between the device and a foreign body occurs.
According to the invention, this device comprises a receiving frame
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
impactor, which is protruding from a bumper and is attached thereto by means of an elastically deformable support, and a contactor member fixed relative to the bumper and intended to cooperate with an element integral with said frame, said contactor member and / or said element, between which there is normally a small interval, being connected to the control circuit of a warning signal, such that, as soon as said frame moves under the effect of a shock, said element is brought into contact with said contactor member, thereby causing the warning signal to be activated.
Said elastically deformable support is, according to the invention, preferably constituted by a block of rubber or the like, having a central hollow in which a rod or the like is clamped constituting said element integral with the frame and serving to support. the latter, so that this element participates in all the movements of the frame to act, directly or indirectly, on said contactor element arranged between the frame and the. vehicle. This contactor member is advantageously constituted by a ring or a piece of tube embracing said element in a zone adjacent to said elastic support.
According to the invention, the frame is advantageously constituted by a loop of wire or tube, placed projecting on a bumper and projecting, preferably, on the outline thereof.
Its shape is susceptible of many variations, it being understood that the frame should ensure the first contact with the foreign body in an area as large as possible.
The control of the electrical circuit of the warning signal can be carried out in any suitable way, on condition that the contact between said element integral with the frame and said contactor member ensures the activation of the warning signal.

By way of illustration, an exemplary embodiment of the invention will be described below with reference to the attached schematic drawing, in which FIG. 1 shows a perspective view of a bumper provided with a device according to FIG. invention, empty scale, Figure 2 shows a sectional view, on a larger scale, of a fastener of this device and Figure 3 shows a variant of a detail of the device.
In this drawing: 1 1 designates a bumper of a motor vehicle and 2 the shock receiving frame which is separated from the bumper and joined to it by two fasteners in an uncomfortable way ... stripe by 3 in fig. 1.
An embodiment of such a fastener is shown in. fig 2. It comprises a piece of tube 4 which is fixed to the bumper by means of two hooks 5, 6 fixed to the tube 4 by screws or bolts 7, 8. Various other fixing means can obviously be used. A block of rubber or similar elastic material 9 is wedged in the tube 4, and in its central hollow is clamped an element 10 integral with the frame 2 and serving to support the latter.
In the example illustrated, this element 10 is constituted by an end, suitably bent, of the wire or tube in the form of a loop forming the frame 2. The contactor member is advantageously constituted by a piece of tube or a loop. fixed to the tube 4 and surrounding the element 10 with little play, for example a part of the latter which extends at right angles to the end clamped in the block 9. This contactor member is usefully constituted by a ring 11 carried by a wire 12 which is fixed to the tube 4, for example by rolling around this tube, in an opening from which is hooked the end 18 of the wire 12 folded in the shape of a hook In the alternative according to fig. 3, the contact is made between the tube 4 and a conical spring 11 'clamped on the element 10.
It will be understood that a shock received at any point by the frame 2 produces the displacement of the element 10 and the setting
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
contact of the latter with the ring 11 which surrounds it at low clearance.
The arrangement is such that this contact causes the closing of the electrical circuit controlling the vehicle's horn. For this purpose, the end of the element 10 can be connected by a connector
14 to a tension wire 15 of the horn circuit, while the ring 11 is grounded, for example by making the elements 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 of metal.
When maneuvering the vehicle, the contact of the frame with a foreign object is therefore automatically signaled before the bumper encounters it. Likewise, when the vehicle is parked, its warning device warns the driver of another vehicle as soon as the latter meets the protective frame.
This frame can be in the form of a simple loop, as illustrated, or any other suitable foras. Thus, for example, the wire or tube forming the frame could be corrugated or folded in a zig-zag, or a few transverse wires could connect the two parallel sides of the bouda). One could also use a frame formed of two or more elements individually supported by one or two elastic supports. In the example illustrated, the two fasteners 3 can be identical and each control the alarm circuit, although this latter role can be fulfilled by only one of them.
The frame 2 is advantageously made of stainless wire, although it can also be made of other materials, for example of relatively plastic wire or tube. rigid, in which case, if a construction as illustrated is applied, the zone cooperating with the ring 11 must be lined with conductive material and connected to the conductor 15.
It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the illustrated construction, to which various modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
