<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PROCESS FOR TREATING ARTIFICIAL PROTEIN FIBERS AND PRODUCTS
OBTAINED BY THE PROCESS.
In the use of artificial protein fibers and in particular lanital, a serious drawback remained to be overcome. It is, in fact, well known that such fibers imperfectly resist a prolonged treatment in an acidic medium at boiling or at temperatures close to the latter, treatment to which they are subjected in certain cases, such as, for example, in acid dyeing, dyeing which is prolonged by shading, reworking flamed parts, etc ...
This drawback was all the more serious given that the good tenacity that had been achieved at present in certain of these fibers, and in particular in lanital, and which was considered, rightly, as a very important advance. was finally reduced, after dyeing in an acid boiling bath, to that of an unimproved Italian.
As the other properties, both physical and chemical of Lanital, are substantially identical to those of wool and therefore very satisfactory, it is above all with a view to providing a remedy for this lack of resistance to acid baths that many research was carried out.
The problem consists in insolubilizing the fiber, tanning it as perfectly as possible, that is to say that formaldehyde, the basic tanning agent, must be fixed, not only in the highest possible ratio, but also it is necessary that this fixation is stable, irreversible, since the acid boiling hydrolyses the compound formed liberates the formalin and regenerates a molecule whose hydrophilic groups thus liberated cause exaggerated swelling in the wet state and provide, after the dyeing operation in prolonged boiling acid bath., a brittle material in the dry state and in any case degraded to a large extent
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
There is no need to say that many solutions have been found,
but that most of them are not or are only difficult to apply industrially.
Apart from additional tanning using tanning agents other than formaldehyde, such as chromium, quinone or processes incorporating compounds such as 1-urea in spinning baths, mention should be made of the means employed. for the purpose of replacing the hydrogen atom bonded to the nitrogen atom of the oxymethylene cross bond; this bond results from the reaction of formalin with two amino side chains. This replacement is effected either by scethlation, or by means of sodium cyanate, or by means of nitrous acid; and the radicals thus fixed are: CO - CH3,, \) CO-NH2,, \ 1 NO.
Despite a significant improvement in the behavior of the fibers thus treated, the drawbacks of the use of such substances, either corrosive or expensive or which often color the finished product, which then requires additional bleaching operations, have made these processes rejected. advantage of insolubilisations in a strongly acidic saline aqueous medium, which, in the opinion of the applicant, has been recommended as being the best working method for the stabilization of these compounds.
In this operation, use is made of other types of side chains, namely those which have an amideo radical. It has, in fact, been found that during the reaction of these chains with formaldehydes the resulting bond is very more stable than that which takes place between amino groups and especially under acidic conditions.
Patents have been taken out in this direction and the method used to carry out operations in this direction consists in additionally insolubilizing the fibers during their manufacture in a strongly acidic aqueous medium, the saline solutions used containing in addition to formalin, up to 250 g / liter of sulfuric acid.
In view of these phenomena, the Applicant had already adopted a way of operating which leads to surprisingly effective results; it is carried out on the finished material, is inexpensive and very simple.
In summary, this operation consists in impregnating certain fibers with artificial protein or the threads or fabrics made of these materials and in particular of Italian, in an acid solution comparable to that of a carbonizing bath and preferably in the presence of of formol, then squeeze it to dry and bring to high temperature. The acid employed may be sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc., or any acidic substance giving the desired result.
An excellent result is obtained from very dilute solutions when sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid is used and preferably with the addition of a certain percentage of formalin, although results appearing to be more advantageous are obtained. with higher concentrations of acid, of the order of 2 Bé and more.
After removing the excess liquid by the usual means, the material is dried at a temperature preferably below 80 ° C., and then brought to a higher temperature, for example at 100 to 100 ° C., for a few minutes, or directly dried at high temperature, however advising not to exceed 120 C. The material is then neutralized.
Although the goal sought here is not the carbonization itself, said since the artificial protein fibers do not contain any foreign vegetable matter requiring chemical stripping, \) we see
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
nevertheless, the whole point of such an operation when it comes in particular to the treatment of fabrics of artificial protein fibers mixed with non-carbonized wool where a treatment of carbonization in pieces is common and compulsory. The so-called "bold" charcoal or on washed fabric, carried out before the dyeing operations will give the expected result.
This phenomenon which, at first glance, seems rather paradoxical, is explained by the fixation of formalin in a strongly acidic medium, in the presence of very little water (quantity of water which is gradually reduced as a result of the evaporation during drying), on the side chains containing an amide function, thus forming the desired stable transverse bonds.
This formalin comes either from an addition to the impregnation bath, \) or from that present in the fiber and which is released during acid heating, unstable amino crosslinks, into which it had entered during the previous normal insolubilization.
In any case, a textile treated according to the method described above can be dyed in a neutral or acidic medium at temperatures close to the broth without appreciable damage to the textile product, whether it is Lanital fibers in filler, in threads, fabrics, etc ... either pure or in mixture with wool or other fibers resistant to treatment, textile product which thus preserves all its swelling and all its flexibility.
When the artificial protein fiber is intended to be fluff dyed, in some cases it will be possible to avoid neutralization by proceeding directly to the dyeing according to the methods recommended in this case for the dyeing of wool using the choice of dyes from use and taking the necessary precautions to avoid lack of unison and flaming.
The Applicant has now discovered that by using gaseous acids to treat this textile, in combination or not with formalin, it is possible to obtain excellent resistance to the acid broth of the artificial protein fibers and in particular of Lanital and that without the unbleached color of these fibers. be significantly modified.
We proceed on the dry matter by subjecting it in a closed chamber to the combined action or not of gaseous acids or other gases or vapors with acid reaction with aldehydes, operations being carried out with the help of heat . The amounts of diacid or formalin referred to in the present patent are not limited; they can vary in notable proportions and give a result.
Among other installations which are perfectly suitable for this purpose., When it comes in particular to stuffed materials, mention may be made, for example, of those which are commonly used for the dry carbonization of cloths and in particular those built by the firm SCHIRP in WUPPERTAL- VOHWINKEL in Germany.
Example 1 - In an example of application and using the SCHIRP installation referred to above, the following procedure will be carried out @ A quantity of 500 kgs. of artificial protein fibers of Lanital is introduced into the rotary drum 1 provided on its periphery with holes 2 (Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings) and located in the carbonization chamber 3. This chamber is heated by gases from a fireplace 4 brought by a pipe 5 ventilating at the same time in order to reach a temperature of approximately 60-70 C in the room.
Once this temperature is reached, we evaporate in the retort 6
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
strongly heated a quantity of 40 liters of hydrochloric acid which requires approximately 2 to 3 hours by continuous supply in the retort by means of the supply pipe 7 of a net of hydrochloric acid which evaporates instantly and coming from the jar 80
The heating gases of the retort 6 circulate in 12- around the latter and are evacuated through the pipe 13.
As it evaporates, hydrochloric diacid is sent through line 9 in the gaseous state to carbonization chamber 3 where it reacts with the artificial protein material and then escapes through holes 2.
During this operation, the temperature is allowed to rise to around 75/80 C, a temperature sufficient to obtain the desired result. It is also possible, once the reaction is terminated and the effect obtained and in order to improve the result, to prolong the heating operation and increase the temperature., But it is nevertheless good to avoid excessively high temperatures if we want to avoid an accentuated yellowing of the material.
Example II The operation is carried out according to the process described in Example 1, but a quantity of 20 liters of 40% formaldehyde is added to the acid; which are evaporated and sent in the gaseous state to the treatment chamber.
The amount of formaldehyde gas can be increased or decreased in substantial proportions and obtained either from commercial formaldehyde solutions or by other means, for example from para-formaldehyde. In addition, the use of other aldehydes may also be suitable for this use. This quantity can be, depending on the equipment used, sent either before or after, or at the same time as the gaseous acid substance.
When treating the same artificial fibers of protein materials, not yet treated with gaseous acids, in the form of yarns, knits, fabrics, etc., either in the pure state or in admixture with other tex fibers. tiles resistant to this treatment, such as sheep's wool, alpaca hair, angora hair, etc., suitable installations will be used.
