<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

L'arbre 14 de la meule 13 et 1 'arbre du moteur 20 sont reliés l'un à l'autre par des courroies 34 passant sur des poulies 14a et 20a respectivement montées sur ces arbres;

In existing machines for grinding crankshafts, the grinding wheel, which usually has a significantly larger diameter than the workpiece, is mounted so that it can rotate on a fixed axis, so that the workpiece must be adjusted so that the part actually subjected to work (for example a crankpin) and during grinding rotates with respect to @

boring and difficult to practice, but has this disadvantage,, 5 <>, rtou when grinding a crankpin,., u parts of the crankshaft corresponding to its normal axis of rotation, for example the ends and collars of this vilbrecuin, tend -8.
deform the part, this deformation being increased by the

centrifugal force. Another disadvantage is that it is necessary to adjust the crankshaft for each group of coaxial crankpins and that it is not possible to switch quickly from one crankpin to another.
The main object of the invention is to provide a machine specially designed to make a new adjustment of the part superfluous for the purpose of grinding or rectifying each of its parts.
The invention is embodied in a special machine

This is to grind crankpins or journals placed according to their noncial anular setting, while they are subjected to the grinding of a device ensuring the establishment of the axis of the grinding wheel in a fixed relation with respect to the 'axis s1J.s-indicated when grinding the main journals, and, of a device ensuring a translational movement of one axis with respect to the other when said grinding wheel is working

grinding wheel and the workpiece, so that the entire circumference of the crankpin can be ground when this crankpin crosses its normal angular position by transfer to 1 "= * e normal of the vilbrecuin. According to the preferred embodiment of the invention, this machine s :::
t, characterized in that the axis of the grinding wheel is

adjustable by translation approximately perpendicularly or radially, to the workpiece by means of a translation device capable of ensuring precise adjustments of the periphery of the grinding wheel relative to the workpiece, a device being provided for disengaging the grinding wheel from this adjustment device without disengage it from its drive control and to keep the grinding wheel in working contact with the crankpin or the crankshaft journal while crossing its normal generator around the normal axis of rotation of the crankshaft, so that, for a single position crankshaft centering, its main journals and crankpins can be selectively ground or ground by the same grinding wheel.
An important feature of the machine is that instead of mounting the axis of the grinding wheel in fixed bearings, the bearings and therefore the grinding wheel are mounted, so that they can pivot to move closer or further away from the wheel. part, means being provided for coupling the axis of the grinding wheel to the part being grinded, so that it is the half part (in the hypothesis of a crankshaft) which imposes its pivoting movement on the part. grinding wheel, so that the periphery of the latter is constantly maintained at an invariable distance from the axis of the crankshaft, although the endless trajectory generated by the point of contact between the grinding wheel and the workpiece is not concentric with the axis of rotation and the workpiece.
This result is achieved by coupling the grinding wheel to the crankpin by a link provided at its end with a member such as a fork or a yoke engaging the crankpin.
It should be understood that a device is provided to allow the adjustments which are necessary, for example to bring the periphery of the grinding wheel to 7. ', The axis of the part, with the required precision.
For ease of understanding and industrial implementation of the invention, it is described below with reference to the appended schematic drawing which represents, by way of

A low power electric motor such as a. three-phase motor II with a force of half HP provided with a suitable reduction gear drives the mandrel shaft 4a by means of a variable speed transmission 12 such as a stepped pulley and belt transmission .
The grinding wheel is shown at 13. An originality of the machine is that the CRANKSHAFT to be grinded can be mounted in the normal centering position using the mandrel 4a and the rotary pointer 5, which allows it to be rotated around its normal axis to grind both its main journals supported exactly co-axially with the axis of rotation of the crankshaft and its crankpins or journals occupying their normal angular body position or positions radially spaced from the normal axis of the crankshaft .
To this end, instead of mounting the shaft 14 of the grinding wheel in fixed bearings, the bearings are placed in the upper ends of two parallel lateral arms 15 which form the upper fork of a substantially vertical balance 16 which pivots. between its ends on an axis by means of co-axial lateral journals 17 mounted in consoles fixed to the table 9 of the machine.
The lower end of this pivoting upright 16 forming a kind of balance is bent in the form of an inverted L as shown at 19 to house a motor (such as for example a motor 20 with three-phase current with a power of 5 CV) fixed to the vertical branch of this bent part of the balance 19 by any suitable member such as, for example, a steel band 21 stretched around the frame of the motor and fixed to this vertical branch. Thanks to this assembly, we can move the axis of the grinding wheel to approximately perpendicular or redically to the axis of the mandrel. This operating condition occurs while the crank pins or journals of the crankshaft are subjected to molding.

If it is a question of grinding the crankpin or journal of a connecting rod head, a device is provided to keep the workpiece at the correct relative distance from the axis of the grinding wheel, the pivoting post 15 being released from the nut. 23, so as to be able to oscillate freely under the action of the part. This device comprises two arms 36 radiating with respect to the shaft of the grinding wheel and supported without clamping by it by the intermediary of bearings, these arms being bent downwards as shown at 36a, that is to say towards the bottom. part approximately in the extension of the perimeter of the ordinary hood 37.

The latter thus form an articulated connection between the part and the axis of the grinding wheel, which counteracts any tendency for the part to vibrate or rebound relative to the grinding wheel or vice versa.
The amplitude of grinding or de.rectification of the niane- ton 44 subjected to the work is regulated by the handwheel 41 which can be manipulated as the grinding progresses, likewise

a very skilled worker. The parts of this machine corresponding to. those of the machine shown in fig. I and 2 have the same reference numbers.
A rigidē46 control upright is carried by the frame, and the entire grinding wheel is coupled to this upright by a telescopic connecting member 47 described in detail below.
This member 47 allows easy release 'of the entire grinding wheel from the control post 46 when one wants to work a crankpin. The head 45 is hollowed out to serve as a housing for a feed screw, the movement of which is provided by two flywheels 24 and 26, the feed screw carrying a nut supporting a ball joint 49 projecting from the head 48. The flywheel ± ± rotates the screw directly to impart a rotation to the feed screw, which results in a movement of the ball joint 49 in the antero-posterior direction, which movement is transmitted to the whole of the grinding wheel by through the connecting member 47, which allows the worker to move the grinding wheel relative to the workpiece when grinding main bearings.
The flywheel 26 is coupled by a worm screw and a threaded sleeve surrounding a fine thread portion of the advance screw, which provides fine tuning. The quick and fine adjustment mechanism is in accordance with the ordinary art and is therefore not shown.
The flywheel 26 can, however, move with respect to a suitable graduation drawn on a fixed part which surrounds its periphery, so that the worker can perform the work within very precise limits using at least one micrometer. Thus, for example, if, after a micrometric check, he finds that it is necessary to remove a hundredth of a millimeter of metal from a main bearing, he can do so with the aid of the graduation scale. fixed, the micrometer being used only for the final check.
It can be seen that the motor 20 is calculated by the balance 16 below the journal 17 and that it serves to counterbalance the grinding wheel, while the assembly of. this is held rigidly

This headstock is controlled by a single lever which serves to clamp or release the headstock from the base of the machine and to apply a certain load to the bearing center when the part is mounted. Load is important when grinding crankshafts. Its exact value is determined by the profile of the headstock and is not left to the skill of the operator.
The casing 66 constituted par.une casting is shaped so as to enclose the slide 1 by its lower part. on the lever 67 pivots a locking member 58 comprising a spout 69 below which engages one end of the lever 68 which pivots on a cross member 71.Le control lever.
72 pivots on a transverse axis 73 and carries a cam 74 profiled so as to come into contact with the levers 67 and 75. This lever 72 is engaged in a slot in the housing 66. The lever 75 can be adjusted by means of the bolt and the ball joint 76. The upper end of this lever 7.5 is engaged in a slot 77 of a centering sleeve 78. The latter is pushed forward by a spring 79. to use the headstock, the worker raises the hand lever 72, which has the effect of first pivoting the lever 75, so that the centering sleeve 78 is moved axially despite the antagonism of the spring 79 to release the part while one. upward movement releases the part on its slide.
The downward movement first locks the headstock to the pedestal, then releases the spring which moves the bending sleeve 78 forward. Thus, by a simple operation and without having to use English wrenches or other tools, the headstock can be brought into position, the load exerted on the part being constant and determined by the spring 79. ,
