<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Method of mounting crankshafts on grinding machines, device and centering apparatus used for the application of this method."
The present invention relates to a method for grinding crankshaft journals, as well as the corresponding mechanical devices and accessory devices for mounting the workpiece in a crankshaft reotifying machine.
Crankshaft grinding machines are generally constituted by a table which can slide longitudinally on a bench or in a corresponding rectilinear slideway, exactly set up, table which carries at one end a lathe doll also called knock-out headstock or drive plate, carrying one end of the crankshaft by means of a plate or a mounting device and imparting a rotational movement to it, and at the other end, a tailstock, also called a tailstock bearing or running headstock, which carries the other end of the crankshaft during grinding, also by means of a plate or a mounting device.
A reciprocating motion can be imparted to the table and the two headstocks, as well as the rotating crankshaft mounted between them, relative to the grinding mechanism, which is usually mounted on an insert or on the headstock. a corresponding support connected to the bench and in such a way that the grinding tool can be brought closer to and away from the axis of rotation of the workpiece, and that its position can be adjusted very exactly with respect to this axis.
The grinding tool may be an ordinary track grinding wheel (peripheral grinding) or a so-called face surface grinding head wheel, or any other grinding tool which can pass between the arms of the crankshaft and whose position can be adjusted. set very precisely with respect to the common axis of rotation of the plates or the corresponding mounting devices in which the crankshaft is immobilized. This axis of rotation, which in short becomes the axis of the surface formed by the grinding on the journal, will be called later, by abbreviation, the "line of points", but it does not need to be. materialized on the machine by points or similar material centers.
The term “line of points” therefore simply means the geometric axis of rotation of the rotating part, an axis which is determined by the assembly headstock of the machine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The process hitherto used for mounting a crankshaft, which involves rectifying the connecting rod journals, is based on the use of two centering jigs each mounted on their plate, by means of a sliding carriage. radially. The main outer journals of the crankshaft are mounted in these centering jigs, after which one centers as exactly as possible, with respect to the line of points, by a radial displacement of the centering jigs and by rotation of the crankshaft in these jigs, the journals of the connecting rods which must be rectified in the assembly in question.
This process is extremely long and complicated, especially for grinding operations for crankshaft repairs, on which generally the journals only have to be grinded as necessary to eliminate the ovality due to. wear and tear.
The centering jigs cannot be adjusted in advance to the exact radius of the crankshaft, on the one hand, because it is difficult to carry out with all the necessary precision the radial adjustment of the centering jigs on the plates. and, on the other hand and in particular, because in reality the radius of the crankshaft is unknown due to the wear of the connecting rod journals. It is therefore necessary to be satisfied with a relatively coarse preliminary adjustment, then to examine, by constant control measurements carried out by means of the comparator, the runout of rotation of the connecting rod journals, in order to reduce this runout. round as possible by continual improvements in the position of the centering jigs on the plates and the position of the crankshaft in the centering jigs.
It is also necessary to ensure that the two centering jigs are adjusted in position exactly at the same distance from the line of points, and exactly in the same radial plane because, otherwise, the assembly of the crankshaft would be distorted, which would make the precision with which the rectification itself is carried out is utterly illusory. It is necessary, for the same reason, to completely disengage the two control unit jigs between two successive corrections of the position adjustment, an operation during which there is a risk of the crankshaft slipping, which would destroy all the adjustment carried out until then.
The fact that the crankshaft is only supported at its ends during the entire grinding work is also unfavorable because the deflection produced by the crankshaft's own weight distorts the indications of the comparator; this then results in a non-calculable precision defect, when the crankshaft is mounted for rectification in the usual grinding glasses.
These drawbacks are also felt in the grinding of new crankshafts, although to a lesser degree, since in this case it is possible to save, since the grinding can be carried out in series, part of the adjustment work, that which has the object is the radial adjustment of the centering jigs, this adjustment being the same for all new crankshafts of the same model. However, it is not possible to suppress or to simplify appreciably in the production work, the adjustment in position of the crankshaft by an angular movement, in relation to the centering jigs and by the careful monitoring of the said crankshaft, in view to avoid any false assembly or roof warping, and the same applies to the drawbacks arising from the bending of the crankshaft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
All these drawbacks are eliminated by the process according to the invention, which makes it possible to reduce to a small fraction of the time essential in the usual processes, the time necessary to carry out a precise mounting and centering of the crankshafts, this process consisting in cen - Trer first the connecting rod journals to be rectified in the assembly according to the invention, independently of the tailstock plates, or of the corresponding assembly devices, that is to say without the crankshaft being fixed thereto, this centering being such that the axis of the crankshaft coincides with the line of points, and it is only when this operation has been carried out that the main external journals are fixed to the plates,
or to the mounting devices in their position determined by the centering of the connecting rod journals.
In the method according to the invention, instead of first fixing the crankshaft to the plates, then correcting the fixing until the connecting rod journals are centered, we therefore proceed in the opposite direction, and we center them. connecting rod journals by any means relative to the line of points. It follows that the main external journals automatically come to occupy a position such with respect to the mounting devices that, after fixing to these devices, they no longer require the slightest correction of their position.
The only thing to which it is necessary to take care is that no involuntary warping occurs when fixing the main journals, this result can moreover be obtained automatically as we will see later, with the aid of a device adapted to the machine and which forms part of the present invention.
According to a practical mode of application of the method which is the subject of the invention, the turning of the connecting rods is centered by means of planes, forming angles between them, the points of intersection of the bisectors of these angles are made to coincide with the line points, by means of the bearing surfaces, arranged on the machine and the periphery of the journals is supported on these planes. One thus obtains, firstly, a very fast and reliable centering, for which one needs neither comparator, nor other central tool and which does not consequently require particularly qualified workers; it is also possible, if desired, to perform. ' centering so that, when it comes to parting work, the original centering line of the journal is not displaced by grinding.
In fact, the wear of a connecting rod journal is limited to a very small part of the periphery of this journal, a part which forms a determined angle with respect to the radius along which the corresponding crank is directed and it is therefore easy to moment of centering, to put in contact with the centering planes, the unworn parts of the periphery of the journal.
We can therefore rectify the new journal with the same line of points as the original journal or give the crankshaft a position such that the grinding removes as little material as possible, that is to say that the grinding is carried out on the circle inscribed in the worn journal (inner circle). journals
To perform the centering of the connecting rod journals, it is appropriate to use, according to the invention, centering brackets each having two centering forks directed transversely, one towards the other, and in which the journals are placed. , so that their axes ...
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
automatically coincide with the junction line '' of points of intersection of the bisectors of the angles of the two fourohes of each bridge, after which the centering plates are mounted on the grinding machine with the crankshaft they carry , this assembly being obtained by means of bearing surfaces integral with the centering forks, parallel to the bisectors of the angles of these forks and cooperating with corresponding bearing surfaces provided on the grinding machine, so that the intersection points of the bisectors automatically coincide with the line of points.
If necessary, the crankshaft can be mounted on the centering forks of the centering brackets before it is placed on the grinding machine, the centering work can thus be started while the machine is still occupied for grinding. previous one, and thus makes it possible to further increase the efficiency of the grinding machine which is very expensive.
The invention also comprises devices adapted to machines for grinding crankshafts for the application of the process in question, these devices can be more or less integral parts of the machine, or they can be accessories. suitable for a crankshaft grinding machine, which has been built for the application of the new process, or accessories by means of which already existing crankshaft grinding machines can be used for the application of the new process. new process, if necessary, after small modifications.
These devices or accessories according to the invention consist of means allowing the centering, independently of the plates or mounting devices, of the connecting rod journals located on the same crank radius, so that their axis coincides with the line of points of the grinding machine, as well as by means for the subsequent fixing of the main outer journals to the plates or to the mounting devices, in the position determined by the basic centering of the connecting rod journals.
The means serving to fix the main journals to the plates or to the mounting devices can be of any type known per se; it is only necessary that they make it possible to ensure an assembly and a perfect unshakeable fixing and without warping of the crankshafts, nor other maladjustment of its centering with respect to the line of points.
According to a practical embodiment of the invention, these fixing means are constituted by a clamping yoke, or by a similar clamping device, formed so as to be able to be fixed first to the main journal, then to the plate, or to the mounting device in the position determined by the attachment to the main journal.
According to another embodiment of the invention, a fixing device of this type may consist of two carriages, one of which is controlled, as to its sliding movement, in an entirely or substantially radial groove, made in the plate. , or in a corresponding support adapted to the spindle of the mounting bracket, while the other carriage can slide transversely to this groove, in a groove of the first carriage and carries the clamping device of the main journal; a clamping mechanism advantageously constituted by a bolt passing through the two carriages, makes it possible to immobilize the two carriages one on the other and par'rapport to the corresponding plate or support.

The centering members of the connecting rod journals consist, in a practical embodiment of the invention, by two sets of transverse angular surfaces, for example. two centering forks, the bisectors of which are respectively parallel to one of the bearing surfaces of the centering oaths and at a distance from this bearing surface equal to that of the line of points at the corresponding bearing surface of the table.
The counteracting means may be constituted, in accordance with the invention, by a centering appéàreµ1, formed of two trestles each composed of two parts each carrying a centering fork, the bisectors of these two forks overlapping and truuvant preferably one in the horizontal plane and the other in the vertical plane, these forks being able to be displaced relative to each other parallel to their bisectors, so that their two branches can be applied simultaneously to the circumference of the journal, whatever its diameter, then fix them one in relation to the other.
According to a practical embodiment of the centering apparatus according to the invention, each trestle comprises a part having a bearing surface intended for mounting on the table of the grinding machine, and carrying a fork of fixed centering, of which the bisector, which is parallel to the erected surface of the table, is at the same distance from the surface @ of the table, as the line of points, as well as a part connected to the first, which can slide parallel to the erected surface of the table, and carrying a centering fork which can slide transversely, preferably vertically with respect to the erected surface of the table, and whose bisector is parallel to the direction of movement, this fork having a bearing surface parallel to this direction and whose distance,
at the bisector mentioned, is equal to the distance between the line of points and the erect side edge or a table adjustment surface parallel to this edge.
The assembly method, the devices and apparatus to be centered, object of the invention, are described below in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. Fig. 6. is a side elevation of this plateau.
Fig. 7. is a plan of the plate in fig. 5.
The centering easel shown in fig. I to 4, consists of two parts 1 & 2, and it is intended to be mounted on the raised surface of the table not shown, of the grinding machine, by means of the bearing surfaces, 21 & 22, of the partial '. Part I carries a centering fork 16, permanently fixed, and whose bisector is exactly parallel to the plane determined by the bearing surfaces 21 & 22 and are located at a distance from this plane which is exactly equal to the distance between the line of machine points, grind and the dressed surface of the table. This distance, which we call the height ...

of centers, is denoted by H in, The drawing.
Part 2 is slidably mounted on part 1 by means of a tongue-and-groove assembly 13, exactly parallel to the plane of the bearing surfaces 21, 22, and it carries a centering fork 7 sliding perpendicularly to it. this plane, and guided with gentle friction in a recess of part 2, the bisector of this fork being strictly perpendicular to the plane of the bearing surfaces 21, 22.
In addition, the part has a bearing surface 4 which is strictly parallel to the bisector of the angle of the fork 7 and whose distance B at this bisector is exactly the same as the distance between the line of points and the upright side edge of the table or a bearing surface parallel to the table lying thereon. A clamping bolt 14 passes through part 2, passes through a longitudinal slot 8 made in the fork 7, and through a longitudinal slot 23 normal to the slot 8 made in part I, and carries a clamping nut 15 of l 'other side of this part.
Part 2 carries a shaft end 12 on which is mounted a lever has two arms, 11 of which one of the arms constitutes an operating handle, while the other arm engages under a shaft end carried by the fork 7, and exits through a slot 6 made in part 2.
An inclined groove 5 made in the lower part of the part 2, serves as a housing for a bolt, not shown, and the head of which is located in an inclined T-shaped groove made in the table of the grinding machine. A support surface 3 applying to the upper surface of the table is made on the lower face of part 2, near groove 5.
Part 1 has, at its upper part, an open groove, in which is housed a bolt 17, carrying a fixing finger 18, and a nut 19, under which is a ring 20, cut at an angle and applying on a corresponding oblique surface, formed at the upper part of part I.
To carry out the centering, two centering pegs are used and the procedure is as follows:
The centering brackets are placed on the table of the grinding machine or on a corresponding raised surface, then the crankshaft is placed by two of the connecting rod journals, which need to be rectified, in the corre- sponding easel. on the horizontal centering forks 16, lowering the vertical centering forks 7 to their lower position, the bolts 17 and the operating fingers 18 being removed. The bolts 17 are then put in place, these bolts being able to be placed from above in the grooves open from the top, and the nuts 19 are tightened.
The fixing fingers 18 are thus clamped on the connecting rod journals indicated at 9 in the drawing, and introduce them into the forks 16, these bolts not being able to tilt and come out of the grooves because of the engagement of the rings 20, under the oblique surface of parts I.
As the connecting rod journals are clamped in the forks and applied to both branches thereof, their center line will coincide, following well-known geometric laws, with the bisector of the forks and it will therefore be automatically placed at the exact distance H of the plane of the adjustment surfaces 21,22.

The handle of the lever arms II is then lowered, which has the effect of raising the vertical central fork, which thus comes into contact with the journal 9 and moves laterally until its two branches come together. - bend on the journal. During this lateral displacement, part 2 follows the movement, being controlled by the tongue and groove assembly 13.
When the two forks 7 are applied by their branches to the journals immobilized in the forks 16, the nuts 15 are tightened so as to immobilize the two parts of the centering brackets, with respect to each other. The axis of the journals then coincides exactly with the line of intersection S of the planes of the bisectors of the forks, and it is therefore exactly at the distances H & B, with respect to the adjustment surfaces 21, 22 & 4. so that by applying the trestles with the crankshafts which they carry on the table of the grinding machine so that the mentioned bearing surfaces apply to corresponding bearing surfaces of the table, one makes coincide exactly the axis of the journals 9 with the line of points of the machine.
This done, all that remains is to securely fix the main outer journals to the headstock mounting devices in the position given to them by the centering of the connecting rod journals. For this purpose, for example, the type of plate shown in Figures 5 to 7, with the corresponding clamping yokes is used.
In these figures, 24 denotes a plate mounted on the axis, not shown, of the mounting headstock, and provided with a diametral T-shaped groove 25; a bolt 26 carrying a nut 27, is engaged in this T-shaped slot. This bolt passes through a carriage 28 sliding in the T-shaped slot, being guided by a tongue and carrying another carriage 30, guided by a groove and a tongue 31, and sliding danle first carriage, perpendicular to the guide tongue 29.
The carriage 30 carries a clamping ohape 33, which can be secured by means of articulated clamping bolts cooperating with open oels, around the main journal 34, which is indicated sohematically.
The fixing of the main journal is carried out as follows. After centering the crankshafts, the plate is rotated and the carriages are moved so that the main outer journal 34 engages in the locking yoke 33, which is then firmly secured around the main journal. This done, we tighten the nut 27 so as to fix the carriages strongly one on the other and on the plate, and, when this has been done at both ends of the crankshaft, the centering members can be removed and Start grinding after carrying out the necessary balancing as usual, for example by applying counterweight to the free part of the plates.
As shown in Fig. 7, bolt 22 may have some play in one or both of the carriages, which prevents warping of the crankshaft when tightening nut 27.
In the example described, it was assumed that the table of the grinding machine is horizontal; this is why two guide forks are used, one of which is vertical and the other horizontal, this is not necessary, the centering forks can have other positions, depending on the position of the upper surface of the table, one of these forks having to be placed so that its bisector ..
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
be parallel to this surface, while the bisector of the other fork must intersect that of the first, but not necessarily at right angles.
The details of the centering trestles described and shown may be performed in other analogous ways and the centering members are not necessarily constituted by trestles intended to be mounted on the table of the grinding machine. The only essential thing is that we use simple components whose proper functioning is ensured to quickly center the connecting rod journals in relation to the line of points. Among these components, preference will be given, in accordance with the invention, to forks the bisectors of which intersect and are located at determined distances from the bearing surface corresponding to the bearing surfaces of the machine.
The new method and the devices and apparatus used for its application can also be used, without departing from the scope of the present invention, for crankshaft machining operations other than grinding, for example lathe machining and milling operations. analogous machining.
