Method of grinding a watch case part having a bevelled surface and device for implementing this method The present invention relates to a method of grinding a watch case part having a beveled surface and a device for the implementation of this method, this device comprising a flat grinding wheel and a support provided with a free rotating spindle and intended to receive the part to be ground.
Watch cases frequently have bevelled surfaces, that is to say made up of cone elements with a circular base which must undergo very fine grinding and then polishing and brightening.
To carry out these operations on parts such as the backs, cases or bezels of watch cases, a support has been used until now having approximately the shape of a sleeve through which a free rotating spindle passes. The piece to be grinded is mounted on the spindle and the worker who performs the grinding presses it against the flat face of a rotating wheel and moves it on this flat surface so that the bevel to be grinded is in contact by one of its generators with the grindstone.
The object of the present invention is to allow as extensive a mechanization as possible of these operations so that a single worker can simultaneously service several machines performing the grinding automatically.
Grinding wheels are already known which are equipped with a support keeping the workpiece in contact with the grinding wheel during the grinding operation. These supports generally include a lever pivoting on an axis and it is at the end of this lever that the workpiece must be fixed. In certain cases, when the workpiece to be grinded is circular, it is carried by a free spindle in rotation around its axis. However, in these known devices, the arm which carries the workpiece does not move relative to the grinding wheel during the grinding operation.
However, experience has shown that the bevelled surfaces of watch cases can only be ground very finely and under conditions liable to subsequently give rise to polishing if the part is moved against the flat surface of the watch. grinding wheel. Thus, until now, there has been no grinding process or any positive device making it possible to grind watch case parts automatically.
To achieve the aim, the method according to the invention is characterized in that said part is mounted coaxially on a free rotating spindle on an oscillating support, the surface to be ground is pressed against the flat face of a grinding wheel so that it comes into contact with said grinding wheel according to one of the generatrices of the twin bucket and the support is made to oscillate around an axis parallel to that of the grinding wheel.
The device according to the invention is characterized in that the support is mounted on a shaft parallel to that of the grinding wheel and in that the device comprises a drive mechanism capable of causing the support to oscillate with respect to the axis. shaft and move it along this axis.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device, object of the invention. Fig. 1 is a partial and partially cut away side elevational view thereof, FIG. 2, a top plan view, and FIG. 3, a front elevational view.
The drawing shows a device which comprises a base 1 to which. is fixed an upright 2 on which is rotatably mounted a circular flat grinding wheel 3. This grinding wheel is rotated by a pulley 4 from a motor not shown.
The upright 2 supports and guides a shaft 5 with an axis parallel to the grinding wheel 3. To this shaft is fixed an arm 6 which is secured to a rod 7 parallel to the shaft 5 and sliding inside a cylinder 8. It carries at its end housed inside the cylinder a piston which can move alternately to the right and to the left under the action of a fluid entering the cylinder 8 by one or the other of its ends. The connections of the cylinder with a source of pressurized fluid and the electromagnetic valves which control the motor fluid are not shown in the drawing; these elements being of known constructions.
Locking rings 9 make the arm 6 integral with the shaft 5 in the axial direction while allowing this shaft to rotate on itself, so that the rod 7 and its piston control the shaft 5 axially. In the vicinity of its left end in fig. 1, the shaft 5 also carries a crankpin 10 which is held in a fixed axial position by two circular arc ribs 12 and 13 provided by a protective cover 14 fixed to the upright 2. This crankpin is connected to the 'shaft 5 by a key 11.
It bones between two positions inclined at 450 on the horizontal horizon, driven by a connecting rod 15 articulated, on the one hand, at the end of the crankpin 10 and, on the other hand, on a disc 16 fixed at the end of the shaft 17 of an electric motor.
The shaft 5 bears at its right end, in FIG. 1, a bush 18 whose outer profile is approximately rectangular, as seen in FIG. 3, and which is keyed to the shaft 5 by means of a key 19 so as to be driven with the shaft 5 during the oscillating movements of the latter. The sleeve 18 is pressed axially against a locking ring 20 by a res out 21 mounted between the sleeve 18 and an end collar 22 of the shaft 5.
A circular arc plate 23 provided along its arcuate edge, with graduations 24, pivots at 25 on the upper face of the sleeve 18, the axis of the pivot 25 being parallel to the plane of the grinding wheel 3. A locking lever 26 ensures the position of the plate 24 in any orientation, this orientation being identified by means of a line 27 engraved in the sleeve 18.
The plate 23 carries a sleeve 28 in which pi votes a pin 29 whose axis is also perpendicular to the axis of the pivot 25, so that, in the position shown in FIG. 2, for example, the axes of spindle 29 and grinding wheel 3 are parallel. At its anterior end, the pin 29 has a clamp 30 which can be actuated by means of a lever (not shown) mounted on the sleeve 28 and which can fix a hollow circular part by spacing its jaws. Thus, the clamp 30 carries, in FIG. 2, a circular bottom-cap 31 of a watch case.
This base-cap has a bevelled surface 32, one of the horizontal generatrices of which can be brought into a position parallel to the plane of the grinding wheel 3 by rotating the plate 23 around the pivot 25 in the anti-clockwise direction. When we then approach the bottom 31 of the grinding wheel 3, by controlling a displacement of the rod 7 to the left of FIG. 1 until the bottom 31 comes to rest against the grinding wheel under the action of the spring 21, the spindle 29 is rotated by the friction of the grinding wheel and the speed of rotation corresponds to that of the portion of the grinding wheel which is in contact with the surface 32.
As seen in fig. 3, the crankpin 10 is in a horizontal position when the bottom 31 is in contact with the grinding wheel in a region located in the vicinity of its axis, where, therefore, the speed is relatively low. When starting the motor 17, the shaft 5 and the support (18, 23, 28) oscillate so that the contact zone between the bottom 31 and the flat grinding wheel 3 moves in an arcuate path 33 (fig. 3).
The spindle 29 is driven faster and faster as said contact zone approaches the periphery of the grinding wheel. However, due to its inertia, and the fact that the directions of the surface speeds 32 and of the grinding wheel in the contact zone are not the same, there is constant friction between the deu. rooms.
With each complete oscillation of the support 28, the direction of rotation of the spindle 29 changes twice.
It has been observed that three or four complete oscillations of the support 28, that is to say about ten seconds, were sufficient for the bevel of the bottom 31 to be completely ground. The grain of the grinding wheel 3 can be chosen extremely fine. Thus, for example, one can use as a grinding wheel a disc on which is mounted an emery paper.
After the support 28 has performed the necessary number of oscillations, the motor 17 is stopped, and this at a precise moment, such that the crankpin 10 is exactly in the horizontal position, and the bottom 31 is kept pressed against the grinding wheel for a few moments before ordering a displacement of the shaft 5 to the right. In this way, the circular zone located in the vicinity of the axis of the grinding wheel 3 is found to be somewhat stripped of grains more quickly than the rest.
During the time when the support 28 is kept pressed motionless against this zone, the grinding lines are marked on the bevel 32 in a symmetrical manner which is reproduced identically for each background and which is perfectly regular. These lines being very few, it suffices to then perform a sharpening so that the bevel is fully polished.
Of course, the device described above automatically controls the various operations necessary for grinding a base. The control device has not been shown in detail, since it is formed of elements well known per se.
It comprises a push-button which actuates simultaneously: an electromagnetic valve, controlling the entry of the fluid into the cylinder 8, a contactor for starting the motor 17 and a time delay relay. This, after about ten seconds, puts in the preparation position a circuit for triggering the motor 17, this circuit comprises in series with the preparation relay, a contact which is actuated by a cam mounted on disc 16. This contact opens under the action of the cam and causes the motor 17 to stop at the precise moment when the crank pin 10 is in a horizontal position.
Finally, another time delay relay controls the solenoid valve which causes the udder to return to its initial position approximately one second after stopping the motor 17.
The device described above makes it possible to carry out the grinding of bevelled surfaces having any inclination thanks to the possibilities of adjustment of the sleeve 28. Thus it makes it possible to carry out very quickly and automatically the grinding of surfaces. conical with a very large aperture, appearing to the eye to be practically flat, and thus form an axially symmetrical grinding on the rear face of a base. The device also makes it possible to grind the bevels of bezels or middle parts.
