<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>

Prepayment vending machine.
The present invention relates to coin-operated automatic vending machines and its main objects are: a) to allow the rapid and easy display and distribution of a large variety of different goods, of varied dimensions and which can be chosen by the customer. consumer. b) to allow the sale, in the same device, of objects of different nature and price by successively introducing, into the same opening for all the objects, a number of coins or tokens of predetermined value corresponding to corresponding to the price of the chosen object.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
c) allow the same device to operate by means of a single coin selector, a single coin locking device regardless of the variety of goods that may be distributed and chosen by the consumer , and whatever the variety of prices thereof, thus considerably reducing the importance, the bulk and the manufacturing price of the operating mechanism required by known devices, relative to the variety of goods which can be be distributed by the same device. d) to allow the same device of small volume, the multiple dispensing of objects of the same category, the device being able to include in itself a variable number of secondary dispensers.
e) to remove from the upper horizontal part of the machine any device for driving the goods-carrying bases and any accessories of any kind generally provided for :; radial box devices of known types, in order to be able to use the latter to place objects.
The invention consists essentially in the use of the upper horizontal part of a table, partially transparent and superficially of any shape, comprising in itself a movable distributor plate which supports a number of compartments arranged. radially, which plate can receive from the outside a rotational movement caused by the consumer, this plate possibly remaining fixed relative to the movable elements.
All the compartments can store and distribute goods of similar or different natures and prices, subject to prepayment by the consumer of the predetermined number of pieces corresponding to the price of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the object chosen, each compartment may also contain only one object or constitute by itself a secondary distributor of multiple objects of the same nature, a single compartment or secondary distributor not being able to * be ac- both transferable by the consumer with each payment.
The invention also relates to the various means which meet the various aims stated above and which will be described below with reference to the drawings which show various embodiments of the invention.
Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the invention in its schematic form.
FIG. 2 is a view corresponding to FIG. 1 in plan and in section.
Figure 3 shows in section the detailed assembly of the dispensing mechanism.
Figure 3a is a detail view.
Figure 4 is a plan and sectional view corresponding to Figure 3.
Figures 5 to 10, and 13 to 17, relate to alternative embodiments.
FIGS. 11 and 12 show more specifically a variant in which a table of shape other than round is used.
In the attached drawings (figure 1), 1 designates a fixed base which is integral with a column 2 resting on a foot 3. This fixed base is provided with a flange 4, so as to form a space in which rotates a movable part 5 formed of a number of compartments 6 which may be of different shapes and sizes which are arranged radially and which are each intended to receive a similar or different commodity, for example: ciga- rettes, sweets, chocolates, sandwiches, cold dishes, etc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The space formed by the base 1 and the rim 4 is closed upwards preferably by a glass 7 comprising a central opening receiving a plate 8. This plate is provided with bevelled edges 9 cooperating with corresponding edges. ice 7 preventing any displacement thereof. The outer edge of the glass rests on a projection 10 of the rim 4 via a seal 11.
Plate 8 and its opening in ice are convenient; the role of / plate 8 is to secure the glass and provide easy access to the mechanism without having to remove the glass. The plate 8 may include all board games, advertising devices, an ashtray, etc. The mirror could be fixed to the projection 10 by any removable clamping device, for example by screwed metal legs; in this case, the slot for introducing the coin (not shown) would be made in / ice and not in plate 8.
The ice cream can be transparent over its entire surface, thus leaving all boxes b visible, or else be partially transparent, for example by softening certain parts and thus leaving only one or more boxes visible, all boxes possibly being visible. simultaneously for the rotation of the part 5.
In this case, the closure or lens 7 can be replaced by any other hard, non-transparent material in which viewing windows provided with a transparent lens would be provided.
The mirror can also be movable, for example in a frame juxtaposed to the projection 10 or replacing the latter and fixed by means of articulations or appropriate locks to the rim 4. In this case, the plate 8 is removed, access to the mechanism as well as the loading of the compartments can be done from the top of the device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The fixed base 1 has projections 12 (Figures 1 and 2) by which it rests on a plate 13 which rests on the column 3. Bolts 14 (in number corresponding to the projections 12) assemble the plate 13, the base 1 and the crown 15. The base 1 and the plate 13 could form only one and the same element, preferably metallic.
The fixed base instead of being round could be of any shape, for example square or rectangular depending on the desired table shape.
The bolts 14 carry upwards a crown 15 between which and the plate 8 and the lens 7 is clamped a seal 16, Each bolt 14 is also lined with a roller 17 provided with a flange 18 cooperating with a circular projection 19 with which the movable part 5 is provided.
A crown 21 is screwed onto a bushing 20 integral with the plate 13, on which rests a rotary plate 22 which can be actuated by arms 23 provided at their ends with spheres 24 or joined together by a ring forming a steering wheel (FIGS. 11 and 12). These arms have the function of imparting a rotational movement to the movable part 5 by means of rollers 25, preferably lined with rubber, the pins 26 of which are mounted in slides 27 formed by the. plate 13 (figure 3).
The tightening of the crown 21 has the effect of ensuring the clamping of the rollers between the plate 22 and the projection of the movable part 5, so that the movement of the arms 23 can be transmitted to this movable part. Either a single roller (figure 1) or two superimposed rollers (figure 3) can be used so as to obtain for the movable part 5 the same direction of rotation as for the arms 23. Each roller 25 or each pair of rollers is located between two projections 12 of the fixed base 1 (Figure 2).
On the upper edge of the compartments 6 and the inner side can be fixed shelves.

ques or a circular band 28 indicating for each compartment, on the one hand, the number of monetary units of the same value or tokens to be introduced into the apparatus to obtain the desired object, and on the other hand, the nature or brand of the object contained therein, which increases the advertising power of the device.
Each compartment also carries a small arrow 29 (figure 2) preferably fixed on each plate or on the circular strip 28. When using the device, the arrow 29 of the compartment containing the desired goods must be brought opposite. a fixed arrow (30) (Figure 2) which is fixed either to the crystal or to the crown 15, or to the plate 8 or to any other fixed part of the device.
In this position, the chosen compartment is
1 ve in front of an opening 31 which is located in the wall 4 and which can be closed by a movable shutter 31.
When the consumer is not using the appliance, the shutter 31 is held in its closed position by a coin or token locking device which will be described later and which is given only to as an example.
The opening of the shutter can only be obtained by actuating the single locking device for all the compartments by the introduction of a determined number of coins or tokens by a single opening for all the compartments. goods (not shown and made in the plate 8 or in the ice 7) in a channel 32 (figure 3) which is provided with a single currency selector device 321 of any known type, partially shown and acting so that counterfeit coins or tokens not corresponding to the set value are directed outwards into a receptacle 331 after having passed through channel 33.
The appropriate coins or tokens are directed into the locking device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
lage located in the central void of the mobile part 5 above the reservoir 35.
The coin (s), after acting on the locking device, fall into a coin reservoir located in the foot of the device (figure 1) and replaced in the case of figure 3 by a tube of short length which itself forms a coin reservoir and which is terminated at / base by a movable closure 352 provided with a lock 353, the entire apparatus resting on the ground by any feet 36 *
The locking device comprises (Figures 3 and 4) a part 37 of rectangular section which rests on the plate 13 by two shoulders 38, which plunges into the reservoir 35 and which has an opening 39 for the passage of the parts.
The part 37 is crossed by pins 40 which protrude inside the channel so as to form stops for the parts *
Each pin includes a part 41 (Figure 3a) having a smaller diameter. On the other hand, each pin 40 rests against a rod 42 which extends vertically and which is curved, forming a horizontal branch 43 extending by an arm 44 terminated by a roller 45, with the exception of the horizontal branch. lower 43 which does not have an arm 44 or a roller 46. Each element 42, 43 and 44 oscillates around one of the bolts 14 and is subjected to. the action of a spring 46. Each pin 40 is subjected at its end opposite to the rod 42 to a spring 47, of less power than that of the spring 46.
The movable part 5 carries at its center downwards a preferably metallic lining 48 provided with cams 49 which are intended to act on the rollers 45.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The shutter 31 is provided with a button 50 integral with a rod 51 on which is fixed a rod 52 which slides in a guide b3 fixed on the base 1 and in a guide 54 fixed on the plate 13. The rod b2 is provided with a window 55 located so as to correspond with the lower opening of the channel 32 and with the opening 39 of the part 37.
This slot 55 widens at 57 so that the trin- gle 52 ends (FIG. 4) with two branches 58-59.
In the widened slot 57 is housed a pawl 60 which is mounted on a pivot 61 carried by the branches 58-59.
On the end of the bar b2 is fixed a cam 62, the role of which will be explained below.
Under these conditions, if, as explained above, the arrow 29 of the compartment containing the desired goods has been brought opposite the fixed arrow 30, and if this product is to be sold for example four francs, three cams will be arranged on the lining 48 in a position allowing them to act on the three rollers 45. When these rollers and the cams meet, the three upper levers 43-44 oscillate around a bolt 14 at 2 'against springs 46 and drive the corresponding rods 42 which move away from the pins 40, 402, and 403 so that these three upper pins 401, 402 and 403 move under the action of the springs 47 and that the par- Ties 41 of smaller diameter are placed in the axis of the opening 39.
If then, four coins are introduced, for example one franc, the first coin will pass through the channel 32 through the opening b5 and will fall into the opening 39 in the bottom of which it will be stopped by the lower pin 40; the other three pieces will be placed above the first, as shown in figure 3. If then, a pull is exerted on the button 50 and consequently on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
rods bl and 52, the pawl 60 will lift up sliding over the edge of the upper coin and the rods 51-52 move outward together with the shutter 31 so that it is possible to 'remove the article.
However, this movement of the rods bl - 52 is only possible if the parts are in the position indicated, given that in the absence or an insufficient number of these, the pawl 60 comes abut against a stop 63 by preventing the opening of the shutter 31.
The movement of the rod 52 causes that of the cam 62 which acts on the rod 42 which corresponds to the pin 404 which moves under the action of the spring 474 releasing the four parts which fall into the reservoir 35.
If the price of the item to be debited is set at 3 francs, there are only two cams on the trim 48 (those which must allow the release of the pins 401 and 402) so that the first part inserted comes to rest on pin 403. The various phases of operation are reproduced in the same way.
If the price of the item to be debited is for example 2 francs, there is only one cam 49 on the lining (the one which must allow the release of the spindle 40 so that the first part inserted comes to rest. on pin 402). The various operating phases are repeated in the same way.
If the price of the item to be debited is, for example, 1 franc, there is no cam 49 on the lining 48 and the part comes to rest on the spindle 40. The various operating phases occur in the same way *
Q, whatever the number of parts used, they are found during each maneuver released from the pins 401, 402, 403 and 404 by the displacement of those-
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
ci under the action of their respective springs 47 and subsequently to the displacement of the rods 42 caused by the action of the cam b2 driven by the rod 52.
It is easy to understand that the apparatus can 'be designed to operate with a number of coins less than or greater than four which, in the latter case, increases the variety of prices of the items to be distributed and thus increases the power of the dispenser. sale of the device; it suffices for this to reduce or increase the number of pins 40 and the corresponding number of parts putting them into action.
When moving the rod 52, the pawl 60, after leaving the part 37, meets an inclined plane 64 on which it rises so as to prevent it from coming into abutment against the inner edge of the base 1.
The rod 52 could be provided with a return spring (not shown) whose role would be to return the shutter 31 to its closed position after each operation. On the other hand, the rod 51 could form one and the same part with the rod 52.
In order to prevent the consumer from being able, during the same maneuver, to have access to the objects in the neighboring compartments, means have been provided such that the shutter 31 can only release the orifice 311. when the compartment is located in a precise manner opposite the opening 31 and the mobile part 5 is immobilized during this opening. For this purpose, a rectangular crown 86 is provided on the lower face of the part TObile 5. This crown is provided with notches 87. This arrangement is such that the opening of the door is not possible. @ble only if the rod 52 can pass through the notch 87 and does not time the crown 86.
The rod 52 engaged in the notch 87 immobilizes the mobile part o.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
This arrangement can be replaced by any other and device for locking the rod 52 / of the movable part 5, for example a pawl supported by the. fixed base 1 or guide 53 and actuated by a number of cams corresponding to the compartments and fixed to the movable part 5, preferably at the location and replacing notch 87. The same pawl can also, by releasing rod 52, immobilize the cam having actuated this pawl and thereby immobilize the moving part 5.
Furthermore, in order to considerably increase the dispensing power of the apparatus, a removable device 65 has been designed which will be referred to hereinafter - "Store" - itself constituting a secondary dispenser of the device. multiple objects, preferably rectangular or square in shape and of appropriate dimensions to those of the merchandise to be distributed.
The desired number of stores can be adapted to the moving part 5, this number not however exceeding the number of compartments 6 achievable in the moving part 5. The spaces that can be found between each magazine can constitute boxes 61 for objects. unique. The magazine is put into action by moving the button 50 as detailed below. The store can constructively form part of box 6 or even constitute it; in this case, the walls of the boxes 61 are formed by the same walls of the mgasin. It can also be one and the same element with the moving part 5.
The magazine as described in Figures 3 and 4 comprises a frame 65 provided with an optional bottom 66 which rests on the movable part 5.
The front face 651 of the frame is provided with a slot 67, the height of which is slightly greater than the thickness of one of the objects to be debited. On each of the side walls
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
A leaf spring 68 is attached to them. These leaves move towards the center of the magazine. Between the last object and the bottom 66 is interposed a false bottom 69 which folds under the movable part 5 so as to form a hook 70 cooperating with a hook 71 fixed to the rod 51. At its other end, the false bottom 69 forms a fold 72 directed upwards and being introduced between the blades 68 so as to keep them apart, and to allow the object to come to be placed between the blades 68.
This fold can be replaced by a block of any material (for example wood) fixed in any way to the false bottom 69. On the other hand, the leaf springs 68 can be replaced by any other hook system. mobile also actuated by the false bottom 69 or the fold 72.
On the other hand, on the stack of objects acts the finger 73 which is fixed to the flanges 74 formed by the frame 65 and which is subjected to the action of a spring 75. This finger constantly exerts on the stack of objects. a pressure which forces them to descend as the flow rate. it goes without saying that this finger can be of any other shape or be actuated differently, or even be replaced by a mass of any heavy material, preferably transparent, (a block of ice for example) simply fixed on the stack of 'objects or by a spring of suitable shape, preferably spiral, acting directly on it.
The traction exerted on the button 50, the running of which has previously been made possible on the one hand by the introduction into the apparatus of the necessary number of pieces to choose the price of the goods / and on the other hand by the passage of the rod 52 between the notch 87 has the effect of advancing the false bottom 69 by means of the hook 71 and of dragging on and with it, thanks to the fold 72, the lower object of the stack
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
which passes through the slot 67. As the object exits, the blades 68 approach and constitute a support for the object located immediately above; when the loop 72 has reached the end of its travel, it also serves as a support for the next object.
If we exert a push on the button bO, to put the shutter 31 in its closed position, the loop 72 again separates the blades 68 and the objects no longer being supported by either the loop 72 or the blades 68 and further undergoing pressure using the finger 73, descend from the height of an object.
In order to avoid that during the distribution of an object one cannot remove the store with its merchandise, in the event that the latter does not form a single element with the moving part 5, it is maintained in the apparatus by means of any attachment device, this device being able to be actuated only by the customer, either directly internally, by the opening 7 of the mirror, or externally by the action a key in order to allow the retailer to be able to leave the store through the orifice 311 for the purpose of loading it with goods.
To this end, the flanges 74 are provided with a notch 76, in which can engage the curved end of a lever 77 whose bevelled end 78 cooperates with a bolt 79 at right angles to a lock 80 provided. a second bolt 81 which engages in a projection 82 of the crown 15. One of the branches of the bolt 79 penetrates a projection 83. The lock is constructed in such a way that during a first turn of key, the vertical branch of the bolt 79 releases the lever 77 which can oscillate around the pivot 84 under the action of a spring 85; this allows the magazine 65 to come out after exerting a pull on the button 50.
The second turn of the lock releases the pins 79 and 81 from the projections * 82 and 83, this
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
which makes it possible to remove Plate 8 for example, with a view to adjusting the mechanism.
The layout of stores at. Exhibit 5 is optional; this room may only consist of boxes 62 or 63 (figure- b). In the embodiment according to Figures 5 and 6, the shutter instead of opening by pulling slides parallel to the rim 4.
A rod 52 provided with a button 50 is provided with a notch 118 in which engages an angled lever 119 which oscillates around the pivot 120. The other end of this lever engages by a fork 121 on a spindle. 122 which is provided with a single leg 123 integral with the shutter 31.
Under these conditions, when the button 50 is pulled, the ends of the lever 119 move respectively along curves 125 and 126, so that the shutter receives a sliding movement.
This shutter system also allows a half-opening of the latter in the case of a compartment of dimensions equal to half those of an ordinary compartment 62 and 6.
For this purpose, the bar b2 is provided with an extra thickness 127 which must pass through the notches 87, but which is stopped by stops 114 which are located externally with respect to the crown 86.
This shutter system can also be double, each shutter being provided with a tab 123, a pin 122 and being actuated by a lever 119 cooperating with a single rod 52 provided with a button 50. Of the two shutters work in reverse order and allow an opening of double width for the distribution of cold dishes, for example.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
In this arrangement, the part of the rod located between the notch 118 and the button 50 could be omitted. The button 50 could then be fixed to the shutter 31 which could then open by a lateral displacement of the button and) 'after the compartment has been put in place and prior payment.
In the. FIG. 7, the shutter 128 instead of opening by pulling oscillates around a vertical hinge 132. It is provided with a sector 129 provided with a ridge
130 penetrating into a notch 87 of a crown 86 when the compartment is located exactly in front of the shutter and when a pull is exerted on the button 131.
With the shutter 128 also cooperates a flexible steel blade 133 cooperating with a rod similar to the rod 52 of Figures 3 and 4 and playing the same role.
Instead of a single shutter, one can use a double shutter 134-135 (figure 8) provided with two buttons 136 and 137 which also allows the use of compartments of dimensions equal to half of those of 'an ordinary compartment 62 and 63.
The crown 86 has small notches 87 and larger notches 871 so that, in the case of a small size compartment, only one shutter (shutter 134) can be opened since the The corresponding ridge 1 38 can penetrate into the notch 87 while the ridge 139 is stopped by the crown 86. On the other hand, when the slot 871 is in front of the edges 138 and 139, the latter may s 'ihtroduce both into this slot and the two shutters 134 and 135 can be opened.
In Figures 9 and 10, the shutter instead of opening by pulling or sliding oscillates around a horizontal hinge. The inner face of the mo-

bile 5 is provided on its upper edge with notches 140 in which can engage the curved end of a lever 141 which is fixed on a rod 142 provided with an arm 143 which engages in a hook 144 fixed on shutter 145.
At its other end, rod 142 cooperates with a coin locking device.
As soon as a compartment has been placed exactly in front of the shutter, the folded end of the lever 141 will be able to descend into the corresponding notch 140 thanks to the action of the coin, it follows that the movable part 5 is thus wedged; on the other hand, the end of the arm 143 rises and releases the hook 144 so that the shutter can open.
The shaft 146 is provided with a return spring 147 which acts so as to always return the shutter 145 to its closing potion. a shutter, preferably transparent, not shown in the figures, can be placed in the horizontal surface part 7 or 8 of the device and be fixed for example to a rod 142 cooperating at one end with the locking device using currency and can at the other end be operated by the consumer by means of a button, lever or any lever.
Figures 11 and 12 show a variant in which the spheres 24 of the arms 23 are replaced by a circle 1141 forming a flywheel. This variant is mainly intended for the use of a table of shape other than round. The mode of action of this handwheel is absolutely the same as in the case of spheres 24. whether the table is designed in a square or rectangular shape, it goes without saying that the fixed part 1 (figure 1) can, depending on the case, be square or rectangular, or be round (as shown in Figure 1) and be surrounded by a square or rectangular frame.
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
Figures 13 to 15 relate to variants of the driving mode of the mobile part 5.
In FIG. 13, one or more small maneuvering wings 158 places horizontally are used; each of them drives a chain lb3 which passes on chain wheels lb4-155. The wheel 154 is preferably fixed on a roller 17 which drives the mobile part 5.
In FIG. 14, one or more handwheels 159 placed vertically are used; each of them controls a pin 160 carrying at its end a roller 161, preferably lined with rubber. This roller can be replaced by a pinion controlling a ring gear fixed to the movable part 5.
By actuating any one of these handwheels, the movable part which is centered and guided by the rollers 17 is rotated.
In figure 15, the fixed base 1 is non-existent and the glass 7 and the rim 4 are replaced by an element 8 of any material fixed to the plate 13 by bolts 14. In the fixed part 8 is fitted one or more manholes. glass under which the different boxes are simultaneously visible 6.
The rotation of the movable part is effected either by means of arms 166 fixed to the movable part 5, or by a circular rim not appearing in the drawing integral with the movable part 5 and coming outside the rim 4.
Unlocking the shutter is obtained by means of a rod 167 passing above the movable part and ending in a coin-operated locking mechanism housed in the space 154.
In Figures 16 and 17, use is made of a sliding shutter 31 which is provided with a tab 168 provided with an er-

got 169 cooperating with a lever 170 forming a sector the eye and oscillating around a pivot 172 fixed to the base 1. This sector comprises a ridge 173 able to penetrate into the notches 87 of a ring 86. At this ridge 173 is attached a flexible steel blade 174 which serves to control the coin release system, for example the rod b2 shown in figure 3.
A stop 114 makes it possible to limit the stroke of the lever 170 in order to allow the use of compartments of dimensions equal to half of those of an ordinary compartment.
In general, it should be noted that the mechanical arrangements described can be adapted to any practical embodiment of a prepayment dispensing device.
