<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

- PATENT OF INVENTION - Automatic tensioner for flexible transmission components, The present invention relates to an automatic tensioner for flexible transmission components such as belts, cables, etc., applicable to any machine including start-ups, variations. of absorbed force and other causes tire and lengthen the belts, causing a lack of grip which causes slippage which is always detrimental to their performance.
This invention aims at a means capable of reducing the tension of the belts at rest, consequently avoiding the exaggerated tensions too often given to them and of radically opposing any slippage of these same flexible members in motion.
These conditions are obtained automatically by ensuring that the resistance to be overcome causes the belt to stick and that the reduction in the force required lets it let go.
8 'is precisely this automation which will be capable of achieving the constant speed relation between the control pulley and the controlled pulley and which, by eliminating any unnecessary work imposed on the belt, will ensure a much longer running time. -
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is clear that in a transmission of rotational movement by belt, the starts and variations in absorbed force quickly strain and lengthen them and that the resulting lack of grip becomes favorable to slipping which is especially noticeable at each start. new and each time the controlled machine must pass one of the highest points on its diagram.
We know that in any belt coming into action, the strand rising on the pulley which controls is over-stretched and that on the other hand the other strand relaxes and sometimes floats, which makes it lose, under the action of the centrifugal force. , part of its envelope on the controlled pulley thus promoting slippage t The imagined automatic tensioner that we will describe is based on the following principle, namely:
gallop or small suspended idler pulley, brought into contact with the rising strand or strand which is over-stretched from a belt, will receive from it an impulse which will be transmitted, amplified to the appropriate extent and transformed into pressure exerted by a another gallop or little mad hen, on the opposite strand or strand which relaxes. to not only maintain its envelopment but also to increase it and consequently the adhesion of the belt.
Several mechanical means can be employed to realize this principle. By way of example we will describe a device capable of the desired result finding its application for a drive belt of any machine having variations of. absorbed force.
FIGS. 1 to 7 attached to the present description relate to the apparatus as it has been designed to meet the stated principle.
In 1, elevational view of the device showing the arrangement of the canters and the oscillating arms which carry them as well as the device capable of varying, according to the needs, the angle of said arms; 2, side view in a parallel plane

5, 6 and 7, figures relating to an application of the automatic tensioner as a starter with means of easily placing this tensioner on the commandero electric motor. Referring to these drawings, it can be seen that this automatic tensioner is composed of soft arms 1 and 2 pivoting on a shaft A suspended as appropriate on a different support depending on the type of machine which is to hold it. This support is fitted or not with a slide B allowing A to be moved according to the spacing of the strands of the R belt wound on the N pulley of the machine to be controlled.
Let 2 arms carrying galopins D and E whose axes are fixed in slides d and e provided on 1 and 2, these slides making it very easy to quickly obtain the desired ratio between the action lengths of the arms The angle 0 (. of these arms can be changed by means of a screw, with handwheel, tightening nut and compression spring, whose xy axis follows the variations of the angle [alpha]. o As can be seen in the drawing, figures 1 and 2, this screw F

A flywheel I allows via an optional spring J to modify the angle [alpha] and a tightening nut L immobilizes this flywheel
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
A ring or nut M is useful, if necessary to limit the working length of the spring J when it is used, whatever the values of the angle of the two arms.
Note that this spring would be useful whenever the machine to be controlled is subject to jerks.
Operation. - With the machine at rest, the device does not exert its action on the strands of the belt R, the belt then prescribing the minimum tension (see the dotted position of jacks D and E). strand which over-stretches (see direction of travel indicated by the arrow of the controlled pulley N) acting on the runner E, it follows that the pressure determined by the resistance opposed by the controlled machine is exerted on the strand which relaxes or slack strand through the galopin D not only to maintain its envelopment but to increase it within the desired limits.
If the required force is constant, the tensioner is fixed in a more or less invariable position. If, on the contrary, the requested force varies, the tensioner thus combined oscillates between the tension and the slackening of the belt while always maintaining the adhesion of the slack strand. In sum, it can be seen that this automatic tensioner device based on a principle different from the tensioners employed hitherto only acts effectively on the belt when the latter is working.
@ * 'is how this automatic tensioner such as it was imagined can be used advantageously:

2 - as self-regulating belt or cable tension.
3 - as, a member capable of avoiding having to constantly retighten the belts or to allow one or other of the pulleys in action to be changed without having to modify the length of the belts or cables.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
It will be observed (see fig. 3 and 4) that the rollers D and E are never equidistant either from the axes of the pulleys or from the axis of their oscillating supports. The pivot A of the tensioner is fixed as required between the two strands straps in cables or outside of them.It may in no case be on the center line 00 '.
As for arms 1 and 2 supporting rollers D and E, the latter will always be of unequal length.63 It is precisely this essential feature which gives the multiplication of action, determines the efficiency of the system and makes its use useful, economical or useful. essential in the cases listed above.
We know that machine controls, in general by individual motor, are economical, but that so far, this control method has not been extended as it should be to slow-speed looms presenting heavy jerks or many stops.
The short distances between the axes, the lack of envelopment of the control pulley, the lack of flexibility in the transmissions are serious obstacles to be reckoned with. All these obstacles are removed by making use of the automatic mower described.
Figures 5, 6 and 7 relate to an application on an electric motor. At 5, front view of the motor showing a mode of adaptation of the tensioner acting at the same time as a starter; 6, side view showing the ring gear integral with the motor and the axis or pivot of the tensioner (not shown);?, front view of the $ crown or swell.
As can be seen by examining these figures, the assembly of the tensioner is easy, being done by means of the crown K fixed to the engine by lengthening the studs k fixing the flanges and providing them with additional nuts of This ring gear K is drilled with holes k 'corresponding to the studs k and carries the pin A of the tensioner at the desired location.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
As for the tensioner itself, it consists of simple supports 1 and 2 articulated in A, bosses H, H 'are provided on 1 and on the extension of 2 so as to allow the passage of the adjustment screw. spring J. The levers 1 and 2 being simple, there is no longer any need to spare the spacers provided in figures 1 and 2.
