<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Among the very many automatic speed variators already proposed, an embodiment is known in which the transmission is provided by a belt on an extendable pulley, the diameter of this pulley varying under the action of a device controlled by centrifugal force.
The present invention relates to mechanisms of this kind.
It is essentially aimed at producing a device which is particularly suitable for the application of automatic speed loading to mopeds. However, in order to be commercial, this application requires a construction which is constructively simple and inexpensive, with a very small footprint, and requiring little maintenance. The new solution proposed here meets all these requirements.
The automatic centrifugal speed variator which is the subject of the invention is essentially characterized by the combination, with an extendable pulley with two movable flanges, wedged on the output axis of the motor, of a belt tensioning device. belonging to the primary stage of the moped reduction relay, and causing the displacement of the axis of rotation of this same pulley.
According to another characteristic of the invention; this movement is carried out on a path in an arc of a circle, the center of which coincides with the upper point of suspension of the engine on the frame of the moped.
To this end, and in accordance with yet another characteristic, the entire engine block acts as an oscillating lever arm, and it is at an appropriate point of this lever arm that the compensation spring acts. variation of the useful diameter of the driving pulley, in order to ensure a practically constant tension of the belt.
Such a provision offers particular advantages, precisely as regards the application in question. Indeed :
1.- the motor output pulley is the one where the centri- fugal forces are the most important, since it is the one that rotates at the highest speed.
2. - the extendable pulley being with two symmetrically movable flanges in the opposite direction, the transmission line remains respected at all speeds, which is important precisely because of the small center distance which separates the mobile driving pulley from the pulley primary of the gear reduction relay.
3. - the belt tension being ensured by the sole movement of the extensible pulley, the normal reduction relay does not undergo any modification.
4.- as the variation takes place on the primary stage of the transmission, the belt is driven at a high linear speed, which facilitates the operation of the extendable pulley.
5. - since the engine block is used as a lever to transmit the force of the compensating spring for variations in the useful diameter of the extendable pulley, the normal upper attachment point of this engine plays at the same time the role of pivot for this lever, thus rendering any particular articulation member unnecessary.
6.- the normal primary belt tension buttonholes can be used directly as guides for the circular arc movement of the engine block around its upper pivot point.
The invention will be described in more detail with reference to the appended drawings which represent an automatic centrifugal speed variator according to the invention, applied to a known moped, manufactured by the Applicant, to which it is particularly adapted. happy, although it is also likely to be incorporated into other mopeds, subject to the detailed modifications necessary for this adaptation.

In these drawings,
FIG. 1 shows in elevation the engine block and the primary transmission of a moped equipped with the centrifugal automatic variator according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a section through line II-II of Figure 1.
FIG. 3 shows in longitudinal section the extensible pulley fixed on the output shaft of the motor.
FIG. 4 is an elevational view of one of the two extending cheeks of this pulley.
The engine block 1 with its carburetor 2, its exhaust pipe 3 and its silencer 4 oscillates freely around the upper attachment point 5 normally provided on the frame 6 of the moped. At its lower end, the motor can be guided in the buttonholes formed in the existing lugs 7, and originally intended to allow the tension of the trapezoidal belt 8 which winds on the one hand on the output pulley 9 of the engine, and on the other hand on the primary pulley 10 of the reduction relay which, danx this type of moped, turns crazy on the axis 11 of the crankset.
The drawing shows: The assembly occupying a position close to the transmission position at the highest speed, a position to which the center G corresponds. The position of the lowest transmission speed is that where the axis of the pulley 9 coincides with the center P.
The centrifugal member of the automatic variator described and shown is, according to the invention, combined with the driving pulley 9 (see Figures 3 and 4). This pulley comprises a hub 12 wedged on the output shaft 13 of the motor 1, and two frustoconical cheeks 14, 15 with opposite tops, sliding freely in the axial direction on this hub, but made integral in rotation with it. here, by means of needles 16 forming keys. Two flanges 17, 18 rigidly assembled to the hub 12 by the screws 19, 20 outwardly limit the travel of the cheeks 14, 15 between which the primary trapezoidal belt 8 is wound. These flanges act both as guide means and protective members for the balls belonging to the centrifugal device.
On the outer face of each of the cheeks 14, 15 are formed radial cells such as 21, in each of which is housed a ball 22. The bottom 23 of each cell constitutes a ramp whose profile is such that, under the action of the centrifugal force, the balls which take support on the one hand on this ramp, and on the other hand on the internal faces of the flanges 17, 18 plane and perpendicular to the motor axis, tend to bring one of the l the other both cheeks 14, 15, moving radially outward.
This action is opposed to the antagonistic effect of a compensating spring 24 (see FIG. 2), which constantly tends to move the extendable pulley 9 away from the fixed pulley 10 of the relay, and consequently to move one of the relay away. 'other the two cheeks 14, 15, by means of the trapezoidal belt 8. This spring 24 is interposed between two cups, one of which designated by 25, is adjustable by screwing on a central rod 26, while the other , designated by 27, slides freely on it. Figure 2 clearly shows that the compressed spring 24 tends to move the pins 28, 29 apart, one of which is engaged in the buttonholes of the tabs 7, and the other of which is integral with the motor housing 1.
An adjustable stop 30 on the rod 26 and interposed between two ears 31, 32 belonging to the axis 29, limits the travel of this axis in both directions, consequently that of the entire engine block.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the device is com-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
piety by a system of compass or broken lever whose two branches 33, 34 are constituted by yokes articulated one on the other by the axis 35, and articulated respectively on the axis 28 engaged in the buttonholes of the legs 7 on the one hand, and on a pin 36 engaged in lugs belonging to the motor housing 1 on the other hand. The function of the compass 33, 34 is to ensure the lateral fixedness of the engine block 1, by relieving the axis 5 on which it pivots at its upper part, and thus to guarantee a rigorously constant transmission line.
The operation of the device is as follows, assuming the engine is off. The spring 24 then pushes the motor to the right, in FIG. 1, and the tension thus exerted on the trapezoidal belt 8 moves the two frustoconical cheeks 14, 15 of the pulley 9 away from one another, which then take the position shown in the upper part of the figure
3, and in the right-hand part of FIG. 4, the position in which they abut against the flanges 17, 18, the balls 22 then being pushed back towards the center, lodging it in the depths of their cells 21. This corresponds to - lays at the lowest speed (position P).
When the motor accelerates, the increasing centrifugal force exerted on the balls 22 urges them outwards. Resting on the parallel faces of the flanges 17, 18, these balls push the frustoconical cheeks 14, 15 towards one another, according to the law determined by the profile of the bottom 23 of the cells, thus forcing the belt 8 to follow a circumference of gradually increasing diameter, until the cheeks 14, 15 come into contact with each other (position indicated by the lower part of figure 3, and the left part of figure 4, correspond- at the highest speed).
The belt 8 being inextensible, the increase in its winding diameter can only be effected if the whole of the engine block 1 moves at the same time to the left in FIG. 1, against the action of the calibrated spring 24 which compresses, until the motor reaches point G.
All the intermediate speeds correspond to a position of equilibrium between the opposing actions of the centrifugal force exerted on the balls 22 on the one hand, and the calibrated force of the spring 24 on the other hand.
During the movements of the motor, the two branches of the stop 33, 34 articulate without opposing its oscillating movements, while effectively absorbing the lateral or torsional reactions of the transmission.
It is quite obvious that numerous constructive modifications could be made to the device described and represented here by way of simple non-limiting example, in particular when it comes to adapting it to mopeds of another model.
Thus the coil spring 24 which constitutes a simple and economical means of action on the lever arm formed by the engine block according to the invention, could be replaced by a more complex mechanism of cams, ramps or levers. any, always stressed by an elastic device, in order to obtain the appropriate law of tension of the belt, and this without departing from the scope of the invention.
Conversely, if the lateral guidance provided by the tabs 7 is deemed sufficient, the mechanism can be simplified by removing the compass 33, 34, the axis 36 sliding directly in the buttonholes of these tabs.
