- the shape of the negative electrode current collector 221 is a rectangular sheet with protrusions on the negative electrode lead 22 side when viewed in a plan view in the thickness direction. The protrusions of the negative electrode current collector 221 are connected to the negative electrode lead 22.
- the negative electrode coating layer 222 is a layer containing copper (Cu) and an element M other than copper.
- the negative electrode coating layer 222 is, for example, a layer made of an alloy of copper and an element M other than copper.
- containing copper and an element M other than copper means that the copper content is 10 mol% or more and the content of the element M other than copper is 10 mol% or more.
- a copper content of 10 mol% or more ensures good bonding of the negative electrode coating layer 222 to the negative electrode current collector 221, and also prevents the element M from forming an alloy with copper, thereby suppressing bonding between the element M and lithium. This makes it possible to prevent diffusion of lithium ions into the negative electrode coating layer 222 and diffusion of the element M into the lithium metal layer 224.
- the anode coating layer 222 has a higher affinity with lithium metal than the dendrite prevention layer 223, and therefore the lithium metal layer 224 can be successfully formed on the dendrite prevention layer 223 side of the anode coating layer 222 during the charging process.
- Element M other than copper is a metal or semimetal element that can reduce the absolute value of the lithium nucleation overpotential, such as at least one of silver (Ag), tin (Sn), zinc (Zn), gold (Au), indium (In), platinum (Pt), lead (Pd), nickel (Ni), aluminum (Al), magnesium (Mg), silicon (Si), calcium (Ca), cadmium (Cd), and germanium (Ge).
- This increases the difference in lithium nucleation overpotential between the dendrite suppression layer 223 and the anode coating layer 222, effectively promoting the precipitation of lithium metal on the dendrite suppression layer 223 side of the anode coating layer 222.
- the presence or absence of the negative electrode coating layer 222, the Cu content, and the element type and content of element M can be measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) on the surface of the negative electrode 220 from which the dendrite prevention layer 223 has been peeled off.

- dendrites may form on the surface of the lithium metal layer formed on the surface of the negative electrode active material during charging.
- these dendrites will be referred to as dendrites D.
- dendrites D As shown in Figure 5, if dendrites D form on the surface of the deposited lithium metal layer 224X, they will have a sharp shape and may penetrate the separator 230 and reach the positive electrode 210, causing an internal short circuit and potentially causing the battery to overheat or catch fire.
- a dendrite suppression layer 223 containing CNTs is laminated on an anode coating layer 222 containing copper and an element M other than copper.
- the lithium nucleation overpotential refers to the voltage at which the potential of lithium metal deposited on the anode 220A1 drops below 0 V (vs. Li/Li + ) when charging is performed using lithium metal as the positive electrode and the measurement target as the negative electrode.
- the energy barrier for lithium metal nucleation is low, and thus lithium metal is more likely to deposit.
- the lithium metal layer 224 can be formed between the negative electrode coating layer 222 and the dendrite prevention layer 223.
- the dendrite prevention layer 223 can protect the separator 230 and the positive electrode 210 from the dendrites D, thereby improving the safety of the secondary battery 1.
- the dendrite suppression layer 223 is preferably made of a material that does not undergo lithium intercalation reactions.
- a material that does not undergo lithium intercalation reactions refers to a material that satisfies the condition that, when a half cell is fabricated using lithium metal as the positive electrode and the material as the negative electrode, it does not have a reversible capacity of 1.0 mAh/ cm2 or more in a region where the charging potential of the negative electrode is 0 V (vs. Li/Li + ) or higher.
- the lithium nucleation overpotential of the dendrite suppression layer 223 can be measured by the following method. A half cell is fabricated using the dendrite suppression layer 223 removed from the secondary battery as the negative electrode. Then, by conducting a charging test on the fabricated half cell in the first charging mode and the second charging mode described below, the nucleation overpotential of lithium in the dendrite suppression layer 223 can be measured.
- the dendrite suppression layer 223 is preferably conductive.
- the dendrite suppression layer 223 being conductive means that the sheet resistance of the dendrite suppression layer 223 is 500 ⁇ / cm2 or less.
- the lithium metal layer 224 is peeled off from the anode 220 and the resistivity of the peeled dendrite suppression layer is measured according to ASTM F 1529-97.
- FIG. 6 is a diagram showing a binarized, black-and-white inverted image of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of the dendrite prevention layer according to the first embodiment, viewed in a planar view in the thickness direction.
- the dendrite prevention layer 223 has multiple gaps G surrounded by CNT fibers.
- the average size of these gaps G is preferably 0.01 ⁇ m 2 or more and 0.25 ⁇ m 2 or less, when viewed in a planar view in the thickness direction of the dendrite prevention layer 223.
- the average size of the gaps G can be measured using the following method. First, the surface of the dendrite suppression layer 223 is observed with an SEM to obtain a secondary electron image (acceleration voltage 3.0 kV) measuring 3.5 ⁇ m wide and 2.5 ⁇ m long. In the obtained image, as shown in FIG.
- the area occupied by the gaps G on the surface of the dendrite suppression layer 223 is extracted by binarizing the image using image processing with image analysis software (ImageJ). More specifically, the threshold for binarization is set to the peak color of the grayscale distribution of the SEM observation image, i.e., the color appearing in the observation image with the largest number of pixels, and areas of colors blacker than the threshold are extracted as gap G areas (white areas in FIG. 6 ). Areas where the extracted gaps G occupy an area of 0.01 ⁇ m2 or more are then extracted, and the arithmetic mean of the areas of these areas is defined as the size of the gaps G.
- ImageJ image analysis software
- the porosity of the dendrite prevention layer 223 is preferably 20% or more and 70% or less. This allows lithium ions to pass through the dendrite prevention layer 223 easily, promoting the dissolution of the lithium metal layer 224 during discharge and improving the safety of the secondary battery 1.
- the porosity can be measured as follows: The surface of the dendrite prevention layer 223 is observed using an SEM to obtain a secondary electron image (acceleration voltage 3.0 kV) measuring 3.5 ⁇ m in width and 2.5 ⁇ m in height. In the obtained image, as shown in Figure 6, the area occupied by the gaps G on the surface of the dendrite prevention layer 223 is binarized and extracted using image processing using image analysis software (ImageJ).
- the binarization threshold is set to the peak color of the grayscale distribution of the SEM observation image, i.e., the color with the largest number of pixels among the colors appearing in the observation image, and the area of color on the black side of the threshold is extracted as the gap G area (white area in Figure 6).
- the sum of the areas of the extracted gaps G is then measured, and the ratio of this sum to the area of the entire observation image is calculated to obtain the porosity of the dendrite suppression layer.
- the thickness of the dendrite suppression layer 223 is preferably 1 ⁇ m or more. This prevents dendrites D from penetrating the dendrite suppression layer 223 even if they form on the surface of the lithium metal layer 224 formed between the negative electrode coating layer 222 and the dendrite suppression layer 223. Furthermore, the thickness of the dendrite suppression layer 223 is preferably 50 ⁇ m or less. This prevents a decrease in the conductivity of lithium ions from the positive electrode 210 to the negative electrode coating layer 222.
- the thickness of the dendrite suppression layer 223 is calculated by observing the area including the dendrite suppression layer 223 in the thickness direction with an SEM, and then calculating the arithmetic average of the lengths of the dendrite suppression layer 223 in the thickness direction measured from the SEM observation image.
- the dendrite prevention layer 223 does not have to be made of CNTs alone, and may contain other substances.
- the dendrite prevention layer 223 may contain multiple CNT films and metal particles between the layers of the CNT films.
- the metal particles are preferably particles of a metal that does not form an alloy with lithium metal, such as copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), or chromium (Cr).

- the anode according to the first embodiment includes an anode coating layer 222 containing copper and elements other than copper, and a dendrite prevention layer 223 containing carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Therefore, since the anode coating layer 222 has a higher affinity for lithium metal than the dendrite prevention layer 223, a lithium metal layer 224 forms between the anode coating layer 222 and the dendrite prevention layer 223 during charging, and the lithium metal layer 224 is coated by the dendrite prevention layer 223. This prevents dendrites from reaching the positive electrode 210, even if they form on the surface of the lithium metal layer 224 deposited on the anode coating layer 222 opposite the anode coating layer 222, thereby improving safety.
- CNTs carbon nanotubes
- the dendrite prevention layer 223 is electrically conductive. This allows the dendrite prevention layer 223 to remove electrons from the lithium metal layer 224 during discharge, oxidizing it and dissolving it into lithium ions. As a result, the lithium ions dissolved during discharge can once again contribute to charging and discharging. This prevents the lithium metal layer 224 from accumulating excessively between the anode coating layer 222 and the dendrite prevention layer 223, thereby preventing the formation of dendrites D on the surface of the lithium metal layer 224 and preventing short circuits.
- the dendrite prevention layer 223 is made of a material that does not undergo lithium intercalation reactions.
- the dendrite prevention layer 223 has low reactivity with lithium, so that during charging, a lithium metal layer 224 forms between the negative electrode coating layer 222 and the dendrite prevention layer 223, making it easier for the lithium metal layer 224 to be coated by the dendrite prevention layer 223. Therefore, even if dendrites D form on the surface of the lithium metal layer 224, the dendrites D can be more effectively prevented from reaching the positive electrode 210, further improving safety.
- the dendrite suppression layer 223 has a plurality of gaps G.
- the average size of the plurality of gaps G is 0.01 ⁇ m2 or more and 0.25 ⁇ m2 or less. This prevents the dendrites D from penetrating the dendrite suppression layer 223, even if dendrites D form on the surface of the lithium metal layer 224, and allows lithium ions to easily pass through the dendrite suppression layer 223. Furthermore, since this promotes dissolution of the lithium metal layer 224 during discharge, it is possible to prevent the lithium metal layer 224 from accumulating excessively in the negative electrode, further improving safety.
- the porosity of the dendrite prevention layer 223 is 20% or more and 70% or less. This allows lithium ions to easily pass through the dendrite prevention layer 223, promoting the dissolution of the lithium metal layer 224 during discharge, thereby preventing excessive accumulation of the lithium metal layer 224 on the negative electrode and further improving safety.
- the thickness of the dendrite prevention layer 223 is 1 ⁇ m or more and 50 ⁇ m or less. This further prevents the dendrite D from reaching the positive electrode 210, even if dendrites D form on the surface of the lithium metal layer 224, while also preventing a decrease in the conductivity of lithium ions from the positive electrode 210 to the negative electrode coating layer 222.
- the element M other than copper is at least one of silver, tin, zinc, gold, indium, platinum, lead, nickel, aluminum, magnesium, silicon, calcium, cadmium, and germanium. This increases the difference in lithium nucleation overpotential between the dendrite prevention layer 223 and the anode coating layer 222, thereby effectively promoting the deposition of lithium metal on the dendrite prevention layer 223 side of the anode coating layer 222.
- the secondary battery according to the first embodiment includes a positive electrode 210, a negative electrode 220 according to the first embodiment, and an electrolyte. This improves safety.
- Example 1 shows the configurations and experimental results of the negative electrodes according to Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1 to 3.
- Presence or Absence of Dendrite Suppression Layer in Table 1, "Y” indicates that a dendrite suppression layer was provided, and “N” indicates that a dendrite suppression layer was not provided.
- Presence or Absence of Negative Electrode Coating Layer in Table 1, “Y” indicates that a negative electrode coating layer was provided, and “N” indicates that a negative electrode coating layer was not provided.
- the negative electrode according to Example 1 was fabricated by the following method. First, a copper foil having a thickness of 12 ⁇ m was prepared as a negative electrode current collector, and the prepared negative electrode current collector was placed in a sample holder of a sputtering apparatus (manufactured by ULVAC, Inc.). Then, a voltage was simultaneously applied to an Ag target and a Cu target loaded in the sputtering apparatus, and while rotating the sample holder, pre-sputtering and main sputtering were performed in this order under the following conditions, thereby forming a 70 nm-thick negative electrode coating layer containing Cu and Ag.
- the molar composition ratio of Cu to Ag in the negative electrode coating layer was 1:1.
- Target power applied during pre-sputtering DC 500 W Pre-sputtering time: 120 seconds
- Target power applied in main sputtering DC 500 W
- Main sputtering time 47 seconds
- Atmosphere gas argon Atmosphere gas flow rate: 70 mL/m
- Sample holder rotation speed 40 rpm Thereafter, the negative electrode current collector on which the negative electrode coating layer was formed was punched out to a diameter of 12 mm, and a 4 ⁇ m thick CNT film (Hamamatsu Carbonix Co., Ltd.) cut to a diameter of 12 mm was laminated on the negative electrode coating layer as a dendrite suppression layer to produce the negative electrode according to Example 1.
- a half-cell was then fabricated using the fabricated negative electrode.
- the positive electrode of the half-cell was a 0.1 mm thick lithium metal foil punched to a diameter of 11.3 mm.
- the separator of the half-cell was a porous polyolefin film (F20BHE, manufactured by Toray Industries, Inc.) punched to a diameter of 19 mm.
- the electrolyte of the half-cell was a solution prepared by dissolving lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ) as an electrolyte salt in a liquid mixture of ethyl carbonate and dimethyl carbonate in a volume ratio of 3:7 as a solvent. The content of the electrolyte salt relative to the solvent was adjusted to 1 mol/cm 3.
- the half-cell was assembled in the following manner.
- the separator was impregnated with 20 ⁇ L of electrolyte solution and laminated on the positive electrode.
- the fabricated negative electrode was then laminated on the separator so that the negative electrode coating layer side of the negative electrode faced the positive electrode.
- Charging test A charging test was conducted on the fabricated half-cell. In the test, CC charging was performed at 0.3 mA/ cm2 until the capacity reached 3 mAh/ cm2 . In the charging test, charging was continued until the voltage dropped in the range of 0 V (vs. Li/Li + ) or less in the charging curve and then increased again. At this time, in the charging curve obtained by this measurement, the minimum voltage in the region of the voltage below 0 V (vs. Li/Li + ) in the charging curve was measured as the nucleation overpotential of lithium.
- Comparative Example 1 For the negative electrode according to Comparative Example 1, a half cell was prepared in the same manner as in Example 1, except that no negative electrode coating layer was formed, i.e., sputtering was not performed on the negative electrode current collector, and a charging test and SEM observation were performed.
- Comparative Example 2 For the negative electrode of Comparative Example 2, a half cell was prepared in the same manner as in Example 1, except that no dendrite prevention layer was provided, i.e., no dendrite prevention layer was laminated, and a charging test was performed.
- Comparative Example 3 For the negative electrode of Comparative Example 3, a half cell was prepared in the same manner as in Example 1, except that the negative electrode coating layer and the dendrite prevention layer were not provided, i.e., the negative electrode current collector was not subjected to sputtering, and no dendrite prevention layer was laminated, and a charging test was performed.
- Figure 9 shows the charging curves for half-cells of the examples and comparative examples. From the graph in Figure 9, the lithium nucleation overpotentials were the values shown in Table 1. As shown in Figure 9 and Table 1, in Comparative Example 3, which consisted only of copper foil, the absolute value of the lithium nucleation overpotential was higher than in Comparative Example 1, in which only a CNT film was laminated on the copper foil. Meanwhile, in Comparative Example 2, in which only a layer containing Cu and Ag was laminated on the copper foil, the absolute value of the lithium nucleation overpotential was lower than in Comparative Example 1, in which only a CNT film was laminated on the copper foil.
- a lithium metal layer is less likely to form on the surface of the copper foil than on the surface of the CNT film, it is believed that by forming a layer containing Cu and Ag on the copper foil, a lithium metal layer is more likely to form on the surface of the layer containing Cu and Ag than on the surface of the CNT film.
- Example 1 in which a layer containing Cu and Ag and a CNT film were laminated on copper foil, the nucleation overpotential of lithium was the same as in Comparative Example 2, in which only a layer containing Cu and Ag was laminated on copper foil.
- Comparative Example 2 in which only a layer containing Cu and Ag was laminated on copper foil.
- FIG. 10 shows an SEM image of the separator-side surface of the negative electrode according to Example 1.
- FIG. 11 shows an SEM image of a cross section of the negative electrode according to Example 1.
- FIG. 12 shows an SEM image of the separator-side surface of the negative electrode according to Comparative Example 1.
- FIG. 13 shows an SEM image of a cross section of the negative electrode according to Comparative Example 1.
- a lithium metal layer 224X with dendrites D formed on the surface was formed on the separator-side surface of the negative electrodes according to Comparative Examples 1 and 2.
- no lithium metal layer was formed on the separator-side surface (the surface of the dendrite prevention layer 223) of the negative electrode according to Example 1.
- FIG. 10 shows an SEM image of the separator-side surface of the negative electrode according to Example 1.
- a lithium metal layer 224 was formed between the negative electrode coating layer 222 and the dendrite prevention layer 223. This shows that by stacking the negative electrode in the order of negative electrode current collector 221, negative electrode coating layer 222 containing Cu and Ag, and dendrite suppression layer 223 containing CNT, a lithium metal layer 224 is formed between the negative electrode coating layer 222 and the dendrite suppression layer 223 during charging, and the lithium metal layer 224 is coated by the dendrite suppression layer 223. From the results in Figure 9, this is thought to be because the lithium metal layer is formed preferentially on the surface of the negative electrode coating layer 222 containing Cu and Ag rather than on the dendrite suppression layer 223 containing CNT.
- the present invention can take the following forms.
- a negative electrode of a secondary battery a negative electrode current collector mainly composed of copper; a negative electrode coating layer provided on the negative electrode current collector and containing copper and an element other than copper; a dendrite prevention layer containing carbon nanotubes, the dendrite prevention layer being provided on the opposite side of the negative electrode coating layer from the negative electrode current collector.

リチウム含有複合酸化物の具体例は、LiNiO2、LiCoO2、LiCo0.98Al0.01Mg0.01O2、LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2、LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2、LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2、Li1.2Mn0.52Co0.175Ni0.1O2、Li1.15(Mn0.65Ni0.22Co0.13)O2、LiMn2O4などである。リチウム含有リン酸化合物の具体例は、LiFePO4、LiMnPO4、LiFe0.5Mn0.5PO4、LiFe0.3Mn0.7PO4などである。
