리튬 이차 전지용 분리막 및 이를 포함하는 리튬 이차 전지에 관한 것이다.
전기 화학 전지용 분리막은 전지 내에서 양극과 음극을 격리하면서 이온 전도도를 지속적으로 유지시켜 주어 전지의 충전과 방전이 가능하게 하는 중간막이다. 그런데 전지가 비이상적인 거동으로 인해 고온의 환경에 노출되면, 분리막은 낮은 온도에서의 용융 특성으로 인해 기계적으로 수축되거나 손상을 입게 된다. 이 경우 양극과 음극이 서로 접촉하여 전지가 발화되는 현상이 일어나기도 한다. 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위해 분리막의 수축을 억제하고 전지의 안정성을 확보할 수 있는 기술이 필요하다.
관통 안전성 및 열 안전성이 동시에 향상될 수 있는 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막 및 이를 포함하는 리튬 이차 전지를 제공하고자 한다.
일 구현예에서는 다공성 기재 및 상기 다공성 기재의 적어도 일면에 위치하는 내열층을 포함하고, 상기 내열층은 알루미나를 포함하는 적어도 하나의 제1 코팅층, 및 수산화마그네슘을 포함하는 적어도 하나의 제2 코팅층을 포함하며, 상기 제1 코팅층 및 상기 제2 코팅층은 상기 다공성 기재 상에 연속하여 교대로 적층된 형태로 위치하는 것인, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막을 제공한다.
다른 구현예에서는 양극, 음극, 및 상기 양극과 상기 음극 사이에 위치하는 상기 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막을 포함하는 리튬 이차 전지를 제공한다.

상기 내열층은 알루미나(Al2O3) 및 수산화마그네슘(Mg(OH)2)을 동시에 포함하는 코팅층을 포함함으로써 온도 상승이나 관통에 의해 분리막이 급격히 수축되거나 변형되는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
특히, 알루미나만으로 구성된 무기물층을 포함하는 경우 관통 안정성에 취약하고, 수산화마그네슘만으로 구성된 무기물층을 포함하는 경우 온도 상승에 따른 열안정성에 취약한 반면, 일 구현예에 따른 분리막은 온도 상승에 따른 안정성이 높은 알루미나와 관통에 따른 안정성이 높은 수산화마그네슘을 각각 별도의 층으로 형성하고, 이를 순차로 적층함으로써 150℃ 이상의 고온 노출 또는 관통 시에 전지 발화 폭발이 방지될 수 있고, 이에 따라 고온 및 관통 안정성이 모두 향상된 분리막을 구현할 수 있다.
상기 알루미나의 평균 입경은 500 nm 내지 800 nm일 수 있고, 예컨대 600 nm 내지 800 nm일 수 있으며, 더욱 구체적으로 700 nm 내지 800 nm일 수 있다.
상기 수산화마그네슘의 평균 입경은 600 nm 내지 1 ㎛일 수 있고, 예컨대 800 nm 내지 1 ㎛일 수 있으며, 더욱 구체적으로 800 nm 내지 850 nm일 수 있다.
수산화마그네슘의 평균 입경이 600 nm 미만인 경우, 통기도가 저하될 수 있고, 1 ㎛를 초과하게 되면 입자의 분산성 저하 및 분리막의 코팅 균일성 저하를 야기할 수 있다. 따라서, 평균 입경 600 nm 내지 1 ㎛인 수산화마그네슘을 포함함으로써 분리막의 우수한 통기도, 분산성 및 코팅 균일성을 구현할 수 있다.
상기 평균 입경은 누적 분포 곡선(cumulative size-distribution curve)에서 부피비로 50%에서의 입자 크기(D50)일 수 있다.
상기 알루미나의 평균 입경에 대한 상기 수산화마그네슘의 평균 입경 비는 1 내지 1.6일 수 있고, 예컨대 1 내지 1.3일 수 있으며, 더욱 구체적으로 1 내지 1.1일 수 있다.
내열층(100)의 두께는 3.5㎛ 내지 7㎛일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 3.5㎛ 내지 6㎛, 또는 3.5㎛ 내지 5㎛일 수 있다.
다공성 기재의 두께에 대한 내열층의 두께의 비율은 0.05 내지 0.5일 수 있고, 예를 들어 0.05 내지 0.4, 또는 0.05 내지 0.3일 수 있다. 이 경우 다공성 기재와 내열층을 포함하는 분리막은 우수한 통기도와 내열성을 나타낼 수 있다.
제1 코팅층(120) 및 제2 코팅층(130)의 두께는 각각 1.5 ㎛ 초과 및 3.5 ㎛ 이하일 수 있고, 예를 들어, 2 ㎛ 내지 3.5 ㎛, 또는 2 ㎛ 내지 3 ㎛일 수 있다.
제1 코팅층 및 제2 코팅층 중 적어도 하나의 두께가 1.5 ㎛ 이하인 경우 극판과의 접착력 감소로 열안정성 및 관통 안정성이 저하될 수 있다.
즉, 제1 코팅층 및 제2 코팅층의 두께가 상기 범위인 경우, 열안전성 및 관통 안정성이 향상된 분리막을 구현할 수 있다.
내열층(100)에 포함되는 제1 코팅층(120) 및 제2 코팅층(130)은 각각 수용성 고분자 바인더(미도시)를 더 포함할 수 있다. 수용성 고분자 바인더는 내열층(100)에 포함된 무기 입자들, 즉 알루미나 사이 혹은 수산화마그네슘 사이를 점 접촉, 또는 면 접촉 방식으로 연결하여, 무기 입자들이 탈리되는 것을 방지한다.
상기 알루미나 및 상기 수산화마그네슘은 내열층(100) 전체 중량 대비 85 중량% 내지 98 중량% 포함될 수 있다. 즉, 상기 알루미나 및 상기 수산화마그네슘 : 상기 수용성 고분자 바인더의 중량비는 85 : 15 내지 98 : 2 일 수 있다.
코팅층에 포함되는 무기입자, 즉 알루미나 및 수산화마그네슘의 함량이 85 중량% 미만인 경우 통기도가 저하되고, 98 중량%를 초과하게 되면 분산액의 분산 안정성이 저하되어 다공성 기재 및 코팅층 간 결착력이 저하되므로 코팅층이 박리될 수 있다. 즉, 무기입자의 함량이 85 중량% 내지 98 중량%일 경우 분리막은 내열 안정성은 물론 우수한 통기도 및 내구성을 나타낼 수 있다.
예컨대, 상기 알루미나 및 수산화마그네슘은 내열층(100) 전체 중량 대비 88 중량% 내지 98 중량%일 수 있으며, 일 예로, 90 중량% 내지 98 중량%, 94 중량% 내지 98 중량%, 또는 95 중량% 내지 98 중량% 일 수 있다.
구체적인 일 실시예에서, 상기 알루미나는 상기 제1 코팅층 전체 중량 대비 85 중량% 내지 98 중량%, 88 중량% 내지 98 중량%일 수 있으며, 더욱 구체적인 일 예로, 90 중량% 내지 98 중량%, 94 중량% 내지 98 중량%, 또는 95 중량% 내지 98 중량% 일 수 있다.
또한, 상기 수산화마그네슘은 상기 제2 코팅층 전체 중량 대비 85 중량% 내지 98 중량%, 88 중량% 내지 98 중량%일 수 있으며, 더욱 구체적인 일 예로, 90 중량% 내지 98 중량%, 94 중량% 내지 98 중량%, 또는 95 중량% 내지 98 중량% 일 수 있다.
일 구현예에 따른 수용성 고분자 바인더는 (메트)아크릴계 바인더, 셀룰로오스계 바인더, 비닐리덴플루오라이드계 바인더, 또는 이들의 조합을 포함할 수 있다.
(메트)아크릴계 바인더는 일 예로, 알킬 (메트)아크릴레이트 모노머 유래 반복단위를 포함하는 모노머 유래 반복단위를 포함하는 아크릴계 공중합체를 포함할 수 있다. 상기 알킬 (메트)아크릴레이트 모노머의 예로는, n-부틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 에틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 프로필 (메트)아크릴레이트, t-부틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 이소부틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 펜틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 헥실(메트)아크릴레이트, 헵틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 이소옥틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 옥틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 노닐(메트)아크릴레이트, 데실(메트)아크릴레이트, 운데실(메트)아크릴레이트, 라우릴 (메트)아크릴레이트, 메틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 이소보닐(메트)아크릴레이트, 사이클로헥실 (메트)아크릴레이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상을 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들어, 직쇄 또는 분지쇄의 탄소수 1 내지 20의 알킬 (메트)아크릴레이트, 또는 직쇄 또는 분지쇄의 탄소수 1 내지 20의 알킬 (메트)아크릴레이트가 사용될 수 있다.
(메트)아크릴계 공중합체는 OH기, COOH기, CN기, 아민기 및 아마이드기로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택되는 1종 또는 2종 이상의 작용기를 포함하는 공중합체일 수 있다.
이 (메트)아크릴계 공중합체는 1종 이상의 제 1 작용기 및 1종 이상의 제 2 작용기를 포함하는 공중합체일 수 있다. 여기서, 상기 제 1 작용기는 OH기 및 COOH기로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택되고, 상기 제 2 작용기는 CN기, 아민기 및 아마이드기로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택될 수 있다.
상기 (메트)아크릴계 공중합체는 제 1 작용기를 갖는 단량체로부터 유래되는 반복단위 및 제 2 작용기를 갖는 단량체로부터 유래되는 반복단위를 가질 수 있다.
상기 제 1 작용기를 갖는 단량체의 비제한적인 예로는 (메트)아크릴산, 2-(메트)아크릴로일옥시 아세트산, 3-(메트)아크릴로일옥시 프로필산, 4-(메트)아크릴로일옥시 부틸산, 아크릴산 이중체, 이타콘산, 말레산, 말레산 무수물, 2-히드록시에틸 (메트)아크릴레이트, 2-히드록시프로필 (메트)아크릴레이트, 4-히드록시부틸 (메트)아크릴레이트, 6-히드록시헥실 (메트)아크릴레이트, 8-히드록시옥틸 (메트)아크릴레이트, 2-히드록시에틸렌글리콜 (메트)아크릴레이트 및 2-히드록시프로필렌글리콜 (메트)아크릴레이트로 이루어진 군으로부터 선택된 1종 이상일 수 있다.
상기 제 2 작용기를 갖는 단량체로는 측쇄에 CN기, 아민기 및 아마이드기 중 1종 이상을 포함하는 것이 있으며, 그의 비제한적인 예로는 2-(((부톡시아미노)카보닐)옥시)에틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 2-(디에틸아미노)에틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 2-(디메틸아미노)에틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 3-(디에틸아미노)프로필(메트)아크릴레이트, 3-(디메틸아미노)프로필(메트)아크릴레이트, 메틸 2-아세토아미도(메트)아크릴레이트, 2-(메트)아크릴아미도글리콜산, 2-(메트)아크릴아미도-2-메틸-1-프로판설폰산, (3-(메트)아크릴아미도프로필)트리메틸 암모늄 클로라이드, N-(메트)아크릴로일아미도-에톡시에탄올, 3-(메트)아크릴로일 아미노-1-프로판올, N-(부톡시메틸)(메트)아크릴로아마이드, N-tert-부틸(메트)아크릴아마이드, 디아세톤(메트)아크릴아마이드, N,N-디메틸(메트)아크릴아마이드, N-(이소부톡시메틸)아크릴아마이드, N-(이소프로필)(메트)아크릴아마이드, (메트)아크릴아마이드, N-페닐(메트)아크릴아마이드, N-(트리스(히드록시메틸)메틸)(메트)아크릴아마이드, N-N'-(1,3-페닐렌)디말레이미드, N-N'-(1,4-페닐렌)디말레이미드, N-N'-(1,2-디하이드록시에틸렌)비스아크릴아마이드, N-N'-에틸렌비스(메트)아크릴아마이드, N-비닐피롤리디논, (메트)아크릴로나이트릴, 알켄나이트릴, 시아노알킬(메트)아크릴레이트 또는 2-(비닐옥시)알칸나이트릴일 수 있다. 여기서 알켄은 C1 내지 C20 알켄, C1 내지 C10 알켄 또는 C1 내지 C6 알켄일 수 있고, 상기 알킬은 C1 내지 C20 알킬, C1 내지 C10 알킬 또는 C1 내지 C6 알킬일 수 있고, 또한 상기 알칸은 C1 내지 C20 알칸, C1 내지 C10 알칸 또는 C1 내지 C6 알칸일 수 있다.
상기 알켄나이트릴은 예를 들어 사이아나이드알릴, 4-펜텐나이트릴, 3-펜텐나이트릴, 2-펜텐나이트릴 또는 5-헥센나이트릴 등일 수 있다. 상기 시아노알킬(메트)아크릴레이트는 예를 들어 시아노메틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 시아노에틸(메트)아크릴레이트, 시아노프로필(메트)아크릴레이트 또는 시아노옥틸(메트)아크릴레이트 등일 수 있다. 상기 2-(비닐옥시)알칸나이트릴은 예를 들어 2-(비닐옥시)에탄나이트릴 또는 2-(비닐옥시)프로판나이트릴 등일 수 있다.
이러한 아크릴계 공중합체의 예로는 (메트)아크릴계 공중합체, (메트)아크릴-스타이렌 공중합체, (메트)아크릴-아크릴로니트릴 공중합체, (메트)아크릴-스타이렌계 공중합체, (메트)아크릴-아크릴로니트릴 공중합체, (메트)아크릴산-아크릴로니트릴-아크릴아마이드 공중합체, 실리콘-(메트)아크릴계 공중합체, 에폭시-(메트)아크릴계, 폴리부타디엔, 폴리이소프렌, 부타디엔-스틸렌 랜덤 공중합체, 이소프렌-스타이렌 랜덤 공중합체, (메트)아크릴로니트릴-부타디엔 공중합체, (메트)아크릴로니트릴-부타디엔-스타이렌 공중합체, 에틸렌-비닐아세테이트 공중합체, (메트)아크릴-우레탄 공중합체, 및 비닐아세테이트계 공중합체 중에서 선택된 어느 하나 이상을 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
셀룰로오스계 바인더는 일 예로, 카르복실메틸셀룰로오스, 히드록시프로필셀룰로오스, 디아세틸셀룰로오스, 셀룰로오스 아세테이트, 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 부티레이트, 셀룰로오스 아세테이트 프로피오네이트, 시아노에틸셀룰로오스, 시아노에틸수크로오스, 플루란, 카르복시메틸셀룰로오스, 또는 이들의 염을 포함할 수 있다.
비닐리덴플루오라이드계 바인더는, 예를 들어, 비닐리덴플루오라이드 모노머 유래 구조단위만을 포함하는 호모폴리머, 또는 비닐리덴플루오라이드 유래 구조단위와 다른 모노머 유래 구조단위와의 코폴리머를 포함할 수 있다. 상기 코폴리머는 예를 들어, 비닐리덴플루오라이드 유래 구조단위와 클로로트리플루오로에틸렌, 트리플루오로에틸렌, 헥사플루오로프로필렌, 에틸렌 테트라플루오라이드 및 에틸렌 모노머에서 유래한 구조단위 중 1종 이상일 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들어, 상기 코폴리머는 비닐리덴플루오라이드 모노머 유래 구조단위와 헥사플루오로프로필렌 모노머 유래 구조단위를 포함하는 폴리비닐리덴플루오라이드-헥사플루오로프로필렌(PVdF-HFP) 코폴리머일 수 있다.
이때, 상기 내열층(100)은 폴리비닐알코올계 보조 바인더(미도시)를 더 포함할 수 있다. 상기 폴리비닐알코올계 보조 바인더는 폴리비닐알코올, 변성 폴리비닐알코올 또는 이들의 조합을 포함할 수 있다. 이때, 변성 폴리비닐알코올은 카르복실기, 술폰산기, 아미노기, 실란올기, 티올기 등의 관능기로 변성된 폴리비닐알코올일 수 있다.
상기 내열층(100)이 폴리비닐알코올계 보조 바인더를 더 포함하는 경우, 내열층 형성을 위한 코팅층 조성물과 다공성 기재와의 젖음성(wetting)이 향상되어 내열층(100)의 코팅 균일성을 확보할 수 있다.
상기 폴리비닐알코올계 보조 바인더는 상기 내열층(100)의 전체 중량에 대하여, 0.25 중량% 내지 3.0 중량%로 포함될 수 있다.
폴리비닐알코올계 보조 바인더가 상기 범위로 포함되는 경우, 일 구현예에 따른 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막의 기재 및 내열층의 결착력이 더욱 향상되어 내구성 및 내열성이 보다 향상될 수 있다.
더욱 구체적으로 상기 폴리비닐알코올계 보조 바인더는 상기 내열층(100)의 전체 중량에 대하여 0.27 중량% 내지 2.8 중량%, 예컨대 0.3 중량% 내지 2.0 중량%일 수 있다.
한편, 코팅층 형성용 조성물은 상기 알루미나, 수산화마그네슘, 수용성 고분자 바인더, 폴리비닐알코올계 보조 바인더 이외에, 개시제 및 용매를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 개시제는 예컨대 광 개시제, 열 개시제 또는 이들의 조합을 사용할 수 있다. 상기 광 개시제는 자외선 등을 이용한 광 중합에 의해 경화시킬 경우 사용될 수 있다.
상기 광 개시제의 예로는, 디에톡시아세토페논, 2-하이드록시-2-메틸-1-페닐프로판-1-온, 벤질디메틸케탈, 1-하이드록시사이클로헥실-페닐케톤, 2-메틸-2-모르핀(4-티오메틸페닐)프로판-1-온 등의 아세토페논류; 벤조인메틸에테르, 벤조인에틸에테르, 벤조인이소프로필에테르, 벤조인이소부틸에테르 등의 벤조인에테르류; 벤조페논, o-벤조일안식향산메틸, 4-페닐벤조페논, 4-벤조일-4'-메틸디페닐아황산, 4-벤조일-N,N-디메틸-N-[2-(1-옥소-2-프로페닐옥시)에틸] 벤젠메타나미늄블로미드, (4-벤조일벤질)트리메틸암모늄클로라이드 등의 벤조페논류; 2,4-디에틸티옥산톤, 1-클로로-4-디클로로티옥산톤 등의 티옥산톤류; 2,4,6-트리메틸벤조일디페닐벤조일옥사이드 등을 들 수 있고, 이들을 단독으로 또는 2종 이상 혼합하여 사용할 수 있다.
상기 열 개시제는 열 중합에 의해 경화시킬 경우 사용될 수 있다. 상기 열 개시제로는 디아실퍼옥사이드류, 퍼옥시케탈류, 케톤 퍼옥사이드류, 하이드로퍼옥사이드류, 디알킬퍼옥사이드류, 퍼옥시에스테르류, 퍼옥시디카보네이트류 등의 유기 과산화물 유리 라디칼 개시제를 사용할 수 있고, 예를 들면, 라우로일 퍼옥사이드, 벤조일 퍼옥사이드, 사이클로헥사논 퍼옥사이드, 1,1-비스(t-부틸퍼옥시)-3,3,5-트리메틸사이클로헥산, t-부틸하이드로퍼옥사이드 등을 단독으로 또는 2종 이상 혼합하여 사용할 수 있다.
상기 용매는 전술한 알루미나, 수산화마그네슘, 수용성 고분자 바인더, 폴리비닐알코올계 보조 바인더 및 개시제를 용해 또는 분산시킬 수 있으면 특별히 한정되지 않으며, 예컨대 물(순수, 초순수, 증류수, 이온 교환수 등); 메탄올, 에탄올, 이소프로필알코올과 같은 알코올; 디메틸포름아미드, 디메틸아세트아미드, 테트라메틸우레아, 트리에틸포스페이트, N-메틸-2-피롤리돈, 디메틸셀폭시드, 아세톤, 메틸에틸케톤, 메틸이소부틸케톤, 사이클로헥사논 또는 이들의 조합을 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 경화는 광 경화, 열 경화 또는 이들 조합의 방법으로 수행될 수 있다. 상기 광 경화는 예컨대 150 nm 내지 170 nm의 자외선(UV)를 5초 내지 60초 동안 조사하여 수행할 수 있다.
상기 열 경화는 예컨대 60℃ 내지 120℃의 온도에서 1 시간 내지 36 시간 동안, 예를 들어, 80℃ 내지 100℃의 온도에서 10 시간 내지 24 시간 동안의 조건으로 수행할 수 있다.
일 구현예에 따른 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막은 우수한 통기도를 나타낼 수 있고, 예를 들어 1000sec/100cc 미만, 예를 들어 300 sec/100cc 미만, 예를 들어 250 sec/100cc 이하, 또는 230 sec/100cc 이하의 통기도 값을 가질 수 있다. 여기서 통기도는 100cc의 공기가 상기 분리막의 단위 두께를 투과하는데 걸리는 시간(초)을 의미한다. 단위 두께당 통기도는 분리막 전체 두께에 대해 통기도를 측정한 후, 두께로 나누어 구할 수 있다.
일 구현예에 따른 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막은 공지된 다양한 방법에 의해 제조될 수 있다. 예를 들어 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막은 다공성 기재의 일면 또는 양면에 코팅층 형성용 조성물을 도포한 후 건조하여 형성될 수 있다.
상기 도포는 예컨대 스핀 코팅, 딥 코팅, 바 코팅, 다이 코팅, 슬릿 코팅, 롤 코팅, 잉크젯 인쇄 등에 의해 수행될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 건조는 예컨대 자연 건조, 온풍, 열풍 또는 저습풍에 의한 건조, 진공 건조, 원적외선, 전자선 등의 조사에 의한 방법으로 수행될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다. 상기 건조 공정은 예를 들어 25℃ 내지 120℃의 온도에서 수행될 수 있다.
리튬 이차 전지용 분리막은 전술한 방법 외에, 라미네이션, 공압출 등의 방법으로 제조될 수도 있다.
이하 전술한 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막을 포함하는 리튬 이차 전지에 대하여 설명한다.
리튬 이차 전지는 사용하는 분리막과 전해액의 종류에 따라 리튬 이온 전지, 리튬 이온 폴리머 전지 및 리튬 폴리머 전지 등으로 분류될 수 있고, 형태에 따라 원통형, 각형, 코인형, 파우치형 등으로 분류될 수 있으며, 사이즈에 따라 벌크 타입과 박막 타입으로 나눌 수 있다. 이들 전지의 구조와 제조 방법은 이 분야에 널리 알려져 있으므로 상세한 설명은 생략한다.
여기서는 리튬 이차 전지의 일 예로 파우치형 리튬 이차 전지를 예시적으로 설명한다. 도 4에 일 구현예에 따른 리튬 이차 전지를 개략적으로 나타내었다. 도 4를 참고하면, 본 기재의 일 실시예에 따른 리튬 이차 전지(1)는 케이스(20)와 케이스(20) 내에 삽입된 전극 조립체(10) 및 전극 조립체와 전기적으로 연결된 양극 단자(40)와 음극 단자(50)를 포함한다.
전극 조립체(10)는, 도 4에 나타낸 것과 같이, 띠 형상의 양극(11)과 음극(12) 사이에 분리막(13)이 개재되어 권취된 후 가압하여 납작한 구조로 이루어질 수 있다. 또는 도시하지는 않았으나, 사각 시트(sheet) 형상으로 이루어진 복수 개의 양극과 음극이 분리막을 사이에 두고 교대로 적층된 구조로 이루어질 수도 있다.
케이스(20)는 하부 케이스(22) 및 상부 케이스(21)로 이루어질 수 있고, 전극 조립체(10)는 하부 케이스(22)의 내부 공간(221)에 수용된다.
전극 조립체(10)가 케이스(20)에 수용된 후 하부 케이스(22)의 테두리에 위치하는 밀봉부(222)에 밀봉재를 도포하여 상부 케이스(21) 및 하부 케이스(22)를 밀봉한다. 이때 양극 단자(40) 및 음극 단자(50)가 케이스(20)와 접촉하는 부분에는 절연 부재(60)를 감싸 리튬 이차 전지(1)의 내구성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
또한, 양극(11), 음극(12) 및 분리막(13)은 전해액에 함침되어 있을 수 있다.
상기 양극(11)은 양극 집전체 및 상기 양극 집전체 위에 형성되는 양극 활물질층을 포함할 수 있다. 상기 양극 활물질층은 양극 활물질, 양극 바인더 및 선택적으로 도전재를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 양극 집전체로는 알루미늄, 니켈 등을 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다.
상기 양극 활물질로는 리튬의 가역적인 인터칼레이션 및 디인터칼레이션이 가능한 화합물을 사용할 수 있다. 구체적으로 코발트, 망간, 니켈, 알루미늄, 철 또는 이들의 조합의 금속과 리튬과의 복합 산화물 또는 복합 인산화물 중에서 1종 이상을 사용할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 양극 활물질은 리튬 코발트 산화물, 리튬 니켈 산화물, 리튬 망간 산화물, 리튬 니켈 코발트 망간 산화물, 리튬 니켈 코발트 알루미늄 산화물, 리튬 철 인산화물 또는 이들의 조합일 수 있다.
상기 양극 바인더는 양극 활물질 입자들을 서로 잘 부착시킬 뿐 아니라 양극 활물질을 양극 집전체에 잘 부착시키는 역할을 하며, 구체적인 예로는 폴리비닐알코올, 카르복시메틸셀룰로오스, 히드록시프로필셀룰로오스, 디아세틸셀룰로오스, 폴리비닐클로라이드, 카르복실화된 폴리비닐클로라이드, 폴리비닐플루오라이드, 에틸렌 옥사이드 함유 폴리머, 폴리비닐피롤리돈, 폴리우레탄, 폴리테트라플루오로에틸렌, 폴리비닐리덴 플루오라이드, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌, 스티렌-부타디엔 러버, 아크릴레이티드 스티렌-부타디엔 러버, 에폭시 수지, 나일론 등이 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다. 이들은 단독으로 또는 2종 이상 혼합하여 사용할 수 있다.
상기 도전재는 전극에 도전성을 부여하는 것으로, 그 예로 천연흑연, 인조흑연, 카본블랙, 탄소섬유, 금속 분말, 금속 섬유 등이 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다. 이들은 단독으로 또는 2종 이상 혼합되어 사용될 수 있다. 상기 금속 분말과 상기 금속 섬유는 구리, 니켈, 알루미늄, 은 등의 금속일 수 있다.
음극(12)은 음극 집전체 및 상기 음극 집전체 위에 형성되는 음극 활물질층을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 음극 집전체로는 구리, 금, 니켈, 구리 합금 등을 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다.
상기 음극 활물질층은 음극 활물질, 음극 바인더 및 선택적으로 도전재를 포함할 수 있다. 상기 음극 활물질로는 리튬 이온을 가역적으로 인터칼레이션 및 디인터칼레이션할 수 있는 물질, 리튬 금속, 리튬 금속의 합금, 리튬을 도프 및 탈도프할 수 있는 물질, 전이금속 산화물 또는 이들의 조합을 사용할 수 있다.
상기 리튬 이온을 가역적으로 인터칼레이션 및 디인터칼레이션할 수 있는 물질로는 탄소계 물질을 들 수 있으며, 그 예로는 결정질 탄소, 비정질 탄소 또는 이들의 조합을 들 수 있다. 상기 결정질 탄소의 예로는 무정형, 판상 (plate-shape), 인편상(flake), 구형 또는 섬유형의 천연흑연 또는 인조흑연을 들 수 있다. 상기 비정질 탄소의 예로는 소프트 카본 또는 하드 카본, 메조페이스 피치 탄화물, 소성된 코크스 등을 들 수 있다. 상기 리튬 금속의 합금으로는 리튬과 Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Si, Sb, Pb, In, Zn, Ba, Ra, Ge, Al 및 Sn으로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 금속의 합금이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 리튬을 도프 및 탈도프할 수 있는 물질로는 Si, SiOx(0<x<2), Si-C 복합체, Si-Y 합금, Sn, SnO2, Sn-C 복합체, Sn-Y 등을 들 수 있고, 또한 이들 중 적어도 하나와 SiO2를 혼합하여 사용할 수도 있다. 상기 원소 Y로는 Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra, Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, Rf, V, Nb, Ta, Db, Cr, Mo, W, Sg, Tc, Re, Bh, Fe, Pb, Ru, Os, Hs, Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, B, Al, Ga, Sn, In, Tl, Ge, P, As, Sb, Bi, S, Se, Te, Po 및 이들의 조합으로 이루어진 군에서 선택될 수 있다. 상기 전이금속 산화물로는 바나듐 산화물, 리튬 바나듐 산화물 등을 들 수 있다.
음극(12)에 사용되는 음극 바인더와 도전재의 종류는 전술한 양극(11)에서 사용되는 양극 바인더와 도전재와 같을 수 있다.
양극(11)과 음극(12)은 각각의 활물질 및 바인더와 선택적으로 도전재를 용매 중에 혼합하여 각 활물질 조성물을 제조하고, 상기 활물질 조성물을 각각의 집전체에 도포하여 제조할 수 있다. 이때 상기 용매는 N-메틸피롤리돈 등을 사용할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다. 이와 같은 전극 제조 방법은 당해 분야에 널리 알려진 내용이므로 본 명세서에서 상세한 설명은 생략하기로 한다.
상기 전해액은 유기 용매와 리튬염을 포함한다.
상기 유기 용매는 전지의 전기화학적 반응에 관여하는 이온들이 이동할 수 있는 매질 역할을 한다. 상기 유기 용매로는 예컨대 카보네이트계, 에스테르계, 에테르계, 케톤계, 알코올계 또는 비양성자성 용매를 사용할 수 있다. 상기 카보네이트계 용매로는 디메틸 카보네이트, 디에틸 카보네이트, 디프로필 카보네이트, 메틸프로필 카보네이트, 에틸프로필 카보네이트, 메틸에틸 카보네이트, 에틸렌 카보네이트, 프로필렌 카보네이트, 부틸렌 카보네이트 등이 사용될 수 있으며, 상기 에스테르계 용매로는 메틸 아세테이트, 에틸 아세테이트, n-프로필 아세테이트, 1,1-디메틸에틸 아세테이트, 메틸프로피오네이트, 에틸프로피오네이트, γ-부티로락톤, 데카놀라이드(decanolide), 발레로락톤, 메발로노락톤(mevalonolactone), 카프로락톤(caprolactone) 등이 사용될 수 있다. 상기 에테르계 용매로는 디부틸 에테르, 테트라글라임, 디글라임, 디메톡시에탄, 2-메틸테트라히드로퓨란, 테트라히드로퓨란 등이 사용될 수 있으며, 상기 케톤계 용매로는 시클로헥사논 등이 사용될 수 있다. 또한 상기 알코올계 용매로는 에틸알코올, 이소프로필 알코올 등이 사용될 수 있으며, 상기 비양성자성 용매로는 R-CN(R은 C2 내지 C20의 직쇄상, 분지상 또는 환 구조의 탄화수소기이며, 이중결합 방향족 고리 또는 에테르 결합을 포함할 수 있음) 등의 니트릴류 디메틸포름아마이드 등의 아마이드류, 1,3-디옥솔란 등의 디옥솔란류 설포란(sulfolane)류 등이 사용될 수 있다.
상기 유기 용매는 단독으로 또는 2종 이상 혼합하여 사용할 수 있으며, 2종 이상 혼합하여 사용하는 경우의 혼합 비율은 목적하는 전지 성능에 따라 적절하게 조절할 수 있다.
상기 리튬염은 유기용매에 용해되어, 전지 내에서 리튬 이온의 공급원으로 작용하여 기본적인 리튬 이차 전지의 작동을 가능하게 하고, 양극과 음극 사이의 리튬 이온의 이동을 촉진시키는 물질이다. 상기 리튬염의 예로는, LiPF6, LiBF4, LiSbF6, LiAsF6, LiN(SO3C2F5)2, LiN(CF3SO2)2, LiC4F9SO3, LiClO4, LiAlO2, LiAlCl4, LiN(CxF2x+1SO2)(CyF2y+1SO2)(x 및 y는 자연수임), LiCl, LiI, LiB(C2O4)2 또는 이들의 조합을 들 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
상기 리튬염의 농도는 0.1M 내지 2.0M 범위 내에서 사용할 수 있다. 리튬염의 농도가 상기 범위 내인 경우, 전해액이 적절한 전도도 및 점도를 가지므로 우수한 전해액 성능을 나타낼 수 있고, 리튬 이온이 효과적으로 이동할 수 있다.
이하, 실시예를 통하여 상술한 본 발명의 측면들을 더욱 상세하게 설명한다. 다만, 하기의 실시예는 단지 설명의 목적을 위한 것이며 본 발명의 범위를 제한하는 것은 아니다.
실시예
실시예
1
알루미나 (AES11, Sumitomo Chemical) 55 중량%, (메트)아크릴계 공중합체(HCM-100S, 한솔케미칼) 1.1 중량%, 및 DI water 43.9 중량%를 비드밀로 혼합하여 D50 0.8 ㎛의 알루미나 분산액을 제조한다. 상기 알루미나 분산액 70.71 중량%, PVA (대정화금) 0.33 중량%, 및 DI water 28.96 중량%를 기계적 교반장치로 혼합하여 고형분 40 중량%의 제1 코팅층 조성물을 제조한다. 상기 제1 코팅층 조성물을 이용하여 폴리에틸렌 다공성 기재 (Toray, 14 ㎛)의 단면에 그라비아 코팅방식으로 2 ㎛ 두께로 코팅한 다음 70 ℃에서 10분 동안 건조하여 제1 코팅층을 형성하였다.
수산화마그네슘 (Kisuma5, Kisuma Chemical) 50 중량%, (메트)아크릴계 공중합체(HCM-100S, 한솔케미칼) 1.0 중량%, 및 DI water 49 중량%를 비드밀로 혼합하여 D50 0.8 ㎛의 수산화마그네슘 분산액을 제조한다. 상기 수산화마그네슘 분산액 87.5 중량%, PVA (대정화금) 0.375 중량%, 및 DI water 12.125 중량%를 기계적 교반장치로 혼합하여 고형분 45 중량%의 제2 코팅층 조성물을 제조한다. 상기 제2 코팅층 조성물을 이용하여 상기 제1 코팅층 상단면에 그라비아 코팅방식으로 2 ㎛ 두께로 코팅한 다음 70 ℃에서 10분 동안 건조하여 제2 코팅층을 형성함으로써 2층의 무기물층으로 구성된 이차전지용 분리막을 제조하였다.
실시예

폴리에틸렌 다공성 기재 (Toray, 14 ㎛)의 단면에 상기 실시예 1의 제2 코팅층을 먼저 형성하고, 이어서 상기 실시예 1의 제1 코팅층을 상기 제2 코팅층 상단면에 형성한 것을 제외하고는, 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 이차전지용 분리막을 제조하였다.
비교예
1
제2 코팅층을 형성하지 않고, 제1 코팅층을 4 ㎛의 두께로 코팅한 것을 제외하고는, 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 이차전지용 분리막을 제조하였다.

제1 코팅층을 형성하지 않고, 다공성 기재 상에 제2 코팅층을 4 ㎛의 두께로 코팅한 것을 제외하고는, 상기 실시예 1과 동일한 방법으로 이차전지용 분리막을 제조하였다.

알루미나 (AES11, Sumitomo Chemical) 55 중량%와 (메트)아크릴계 공중합체(HCM-100S, 한솔케미칼) 1.1 중량%, DI water 43.9 중량%를 비드밀로 혼합하여 D50 0.8 ㎛의 알루미나 분산액을 제조한다. 수산화마그네슘 (Kisuma5, Kisuma Chemical) 50 중량%와 (메트)아크릴계 공중합체(HCM-100S, 한솔케미칼), DI water 49 중량%를 비드밀로 혼합하여 D50 0.8 ㎛의 수산화마그네슘 분산액을 제조한다. 상기 알루미나 분산액 30.9 중량%와 상기 수산화마그네슘 분산액 56.0 중량%, PVA (대정화금) 0.35 중량%, DI 12.75 중량%를 기계적 교반장치로 혼합하여 고형분 45 중량%의 코팅층 조성물을 제조한다.
상기 코팅층 조성물을 이용하여 폴리에틸렌 다공성 기재 (Toray, 14 ㎛)의 단면에 그라비아 코팅방식으로 4 ㎛ 두께로 코팅한 다음 70 ℃에서 10분 동안 건조하여 이차전지용 분리막을 제조하였다.
평가예
실시예 1 내지 2 및 비교예 1 내지 3에 따른 분리막을 이용하여 1.5Ah 용량의 파우치 셀을 제작한 후, 하기 방법에 따라 열 노출 안정성 평가 및 관통 안정성 평가를 수행하였고 그 결과를 하기 표 1에 나타내었다.
(열 노출 안정성 평가 방법)
4.3 V, 1.5 Ah의 셀을 챔버에 넣고 3 ℃/min의 승온 속도로 챔버 온도 170 ℃까지 상승시켜 전지의 안정성을 평가하였다.
(관통 안정성 평가 방법)
4.3 V의 1.5 Ah 셀을 챔버에 넣고 2.5 파이의 Nail을 이용하여 80 cm/min의 속도로 셀을 관통시켜 전지의 안정성을 평가하였다.
(평가 기준)
L0: 반응 없음
L1: 전지의 성능에 가역적 손상이 발생함
L2: 전지의 성능에 비가역적 손상이 발생함
L3: 전지의 전해액의 무게가 50% 미만 감소함
L4: 전지의 전해액의 무게가 50% 이상 감소함
L5: 발화 또는 불꽃이 발생함(파열 혹은 폭발은 없음)
L6: 전지 파열(폭발 없음)
L7: 전지 폭발

종합하면, 실시예에서 제조한 분리막은 특정 조성 및 구조의 내열층을 포함함으로써, 우수한 열 안정성 및 관통 안정성이 동시에 향상된 이차 전지를 구현할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
이상에서 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예들에 대하여 상세하게 설명하였지만 본 발명의 권리 범위는 이에 한정되는 것은 아니고 다음의 청구 범위에서 정의하고 있는 본 발명의 기본 개념을 이용한 당업자의 여러 변형 및 개량 형태 또한 본 발명의 권리 범위에 속하는 것이다.
Claims (11)
- 다공성 기재 및 상기 다공성 기재의 적어도 일면에 위치하는 내열층을 포함하고,상기 내열층은 알루미나를 포함하는 적어도 하나의 제1 코팅층, 및 수산화마그네슘을 포함하는 적어도 하나의 제2 코팅층을 포함하며,상기 제1 코팅층 및 상기 제2 코팅층은 상기 다공성 기재 상에 연속하여 교대로 적층된 형태로 위치하는 것인, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에서,상기 다공성 기재의 적어도 일면에 상기 제1 코팅층이 위치하고, 상기 제1 코팅층 상에 상기 제2 코팅층이 위치하는 것인, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에서,상기 다공성 기재의 적어도 일면에 상기 제2 코팅층이 위치하고, 상기 제2 코팅층 상에 상기 제1 코팅층이 위치하는 것인, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에서,상기 알루미나의 평균 입경은 500 nm 내지 800 nm 이고,상기 수산화마그네슘의 평균 입경은 600 nm 내지 1 ㎛인, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에서,상기 알루미나의 평균 입경에 대한 상기 수산화마그네슘의 평균 입경 비는 1 내지 1.6인, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에서,상기 제1 코팅층 및 상기 제2 코팅층의 두께는 각각 1.5 ㎛ 초과 및 3.5 ㎛ 이하인, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 제1항에서,상기 제1 코팅층 및 상기 제2 코팅층은 각각 수용성 고분자 바인더를 더 포함하는, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 제7항에서,상기 알루미나 및 상기 수산화마그네슘 : 상기 수용성 고분자 바인더의 중량비는 85 : 15 내지 98 : 2인, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 제7항에서,상기 수용성 고분자 바인더는 아크릴계 바인더, 셀룰로오스계 바인더, 비닐리덴플루오라이드계 바인더, 또는 이들의 조합을 포함하는, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 제7항에서,상기 제1 코팅층 및 상기 제2 코팅층은 각각 폴리비닐알코올계 보조 바인더를 더 포함하는, 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막.
- 양극, 음극, 및 상기 양극과 상기 음극 사이에 위치하는 제1항 내지 제10항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 리튬 이차 전지용 분리막을 포함하는 리튬 이차 전지.
