Definitions
- HEL High Energy Laser
- the invention relates to the system structure of a weapon system having a plurality, but at least two HEL effectors on an object, in particular with regard to the aspects of system weight, volume, integration concept and installation effort.
- HEL effectors are used for the protection of objects, movable or stationary type.
- a HEL effector is used to combat different goals.
- Multiple HEL effectors can be targeted simultaneously to one or more targets. These may include static targets, such as mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), etc., as well as dynamic targets, such as rockets, artillery shells or RAM missiles, etc. These goals are then destroyed and / or destroyed as part of the defense against the threat.
- LSS targets also include so-called UAVs (Unmanned Air Vehicles), such as drones, which are often used abusively to transport explosives.
- UAVs Unmanned Air Vehicles
- a HEL effector Key components of a HEL effector include a laser source and beam delivery system.
- the subassemblies Feinimagingsystems (FIS), Feintrackingsystems (FTS), telescope and, if necessary, at least one adaptive optics (AO) may be housed.
- Known laser sources are gas lasers, such as CO2 lasers, as well as solid-state lasers, such as diode lasers, fiber lasers etc.
- the high-power fiber laser includes one or more pump sources, such as. B. one or more pumping diode (s).
- the pump light is coupled into an active fiber and very good in laser light Beamquafity converted.
- High-power fiber lasers are constructed either as pure oscillators (an active fiber with a resonator) or as multi-stage oscillators - amplifier systems so-called MOPA (Master Oscillator and Power Amplifier). In the MOPA setup, the power of one oscillator is coupled into subsequent amplifier stages (active fibers) and amplified to higher power.
- MOPA Master Oscillator and Power Amplifier
- the laser light is then emitted via the beam guidance system to a target, etc., to combat the target.
- All optical components are usually connected to optical fibers (passive transport fibers).
- the power supply and cooling system which supply and cool the pump source and master oscillators Power Amplifier of the individual laser sources.
- the power supply and cooling system may be part of the laser source.
- the lengths of the transport fibers must be e.g. B. between the MOPA or oscillator and the beam guidance system at high powers in the multi-kW range are limited.
- fiber parameters, fiber structure, wavelength or similar a maximum possible fiber length of a few meters may result.
- the beam quality M2 is a decisive factor for the effect of HEL effectors.
- the beam quality value M2 should be as small as possible, preferably smaller than 2.
- HEL effectors like other weapon systems, can be lafetted on a fixed or mobile platform.
- Weapon stations are also referred to as platforms. These platforms, in turn, may be mounted on stationary objects (e.g., houses, bunkers, containers, etc.) or moving objects (e.g., land, air and sea vehicles, containers, etc.). Larger objects often use multiple platforms.
- HEL-effector over conventional effectors (conventional weapons) is, among other things, a high level of accuracy and a delay-free effect. An allowance does not have to be taken into account. There are also no muzzle flashes and almost no firing signatures. Likewise, there is no limit to the usability of the HEL- protagonists by a magazine stock.
- HEL-effector To realize the required beam quality of a HEL-effector is to strive to accommodate the MOPA or the oscillator very close to the weapon station or platform.
- the components of the HEL-effector are in practice housed in a compartment. This leads to the restriction with respect to the construction sites and the achievable maximum laser power. Especially on maritime objects, such a restriction has a negative effect.
- DE 10 2010 051 097 A1 discloses a laser system for generating high or compact power densities on the object.
- the power is split over several lasers or laser weapons and these are geometrically superimposed on the target, so that in total at the target a total power density of all individual power densities is achieved.
- the individual lasers or laser weapons form a weapon system for combating an attacking object. These laser weapons are aligned with the object via coarse and fine tracking.
- the laser weapons may be mounted on a moving or stationary platform. According to the document, such lasers can also be used for material processing, for example at a greater distance, as a processing laser.
- WO 2006/103655 A2 describes a laser or a laser weapon in which a laser generating unit is spatially separated from a telescope to be aimed at the target. While the telescope is on a movable platform of a mobile vehicle along with a target acquisition, the laser generation unit is firmly integrated with the mobile vehicle or a separate unit. The functional connection between the telescope and the laser generating unit is made by an optical fiber.
- DE 33 18 686 A1 discloses a device for aligning a laser beam. This device is designed to be able to pivot a high-energy laser beam in a fixed parallelogram orientation for orientation of further devices located on a platform.
- the laser source is located off the platform.
- the laser beam is transmitted via deflecting mirror! transferred to optical elements.
- the beam irradiation unit comprises at least one laser generation unit which has at least one seed laser unit and at least one pump laser unit.
- the seed laser unit as well as the pump laser unit are connected to the output stage element (eg, amplifier) using one optical fiber at a time.
- the output stage element eg, amplifier
- the individual laser powers in one Beam coupler merged and also fed via an optical fiber to the output stage element. This ensures that the mass can be reduced on the voilbeweglichen part. The total weight on the object, however, does not change.
- the object of the invention is to optimize the system structure with regard to the required mass, the space requirement and the integration effort when using two or more HEL effectors.
- the invention is based on the idea not to associate with each HEL effector all key components of a HEL effector. So not every HEL effector should be e.g. have their own, complete laser source, or parts thereof. Rather, it is provided that this key component, or parts thereof, is shared by several HEL effectors. This key component, or parts thereof, is defined as a sharable component.
- a HEL effector need only have its own key component, namely at least one beam guidance system as an individual component.
- the individual beam guidance systems can accommodate the subassembly fine tuning system (FIS), fine tracking system (FTS), telescope and, if necessary, at least one adaptive optics (AO).
- the sharable key component, or parts thereof is in turn connected to the individual key component (s) of the HEL effector so as to ensure the function of at least one HEL effector.
- the present invention therefore proposes, in a weapon system having at least two HEL effectors having at least one beam guiding system, e.g. to use only one laser source or one pump source for the at least two HEL effectors.
- the beam guiding systems of the HEL effectors access the common laser source or common pump source.
- the laser source comprises at least one pump source with at least one pump diode, preferably several, as well as at least one MOPA, alternatively at least one oscillator.
- the laser source can also be assigned an energy supply and cooling system.
- the central laser source is the key component of all HEL effectors.
- the optical connections are realized by means of optical fibers or free jet.
- the laser source which can be used by several HEL effectors, can in turn be placed centrally on the object. It should be noted that a necessary beam quality is maintained in the beam transport.
- the optical switching unit may be an optical switch or an optical switch.
- An optical switch point is characterized by the fact that it switches quickly, accurately and always reliably.
- the optical switching unit should also be designed to be able to split the laser light onto at least two outputs of the optical switching unit, also simultaneously.
- the division should be stepless or in several stages feasible. There are at least two stages to be provided, e.g. over end stops.
- the laser light should be able to be split from 0 to 100%.
- the single HEL effector thus consists in a first embodiment of a shared laser source and at least one own beam guiding system. This creates the possibility that only the individual beam guidance system of the respective HEL effector on a platform, as already defined, needs to be lafettiert. Although this possible implementation is not favored, it is technically feasible.
- each HEL effector is assigned its own Master Oscillator + Amplifier (MOPA) or oscillator.
- MOPA Master Oscillator + Amplifier
- This MOPA or oscillator can then be mounted in the vicinity, also in the immediate vicinity, to the respective platform, but also on the respective platform.
- Each amplifier of the MOPA or each oscillator is optically connectable to the pump source.
- the master oscillator (MO) can be accommodated in the area of the pump source or the amplifier.
- Other amplifiers may also be integrated in front of the individual beam guidance systems of the HEL effectors.
- the optical switching unit in turn serves to divide the pump power of the pump source to at least two outputs of the optical switching unit. In the case of several pump sources, these can also be distributed via the optical switching unit to at least two outputs of the optical switching unit.
- the outputs of the optical switching unit (s) for the pump power are in turn connected to at least one input of the amplifiers (PA) of the HEL effectors, preferably by means of optical fibers.
- the distribution of the pumping power should be stepless or in several stages feasible. There are at least two stages to be provided, e.g. over end stops.
- the pumping power should be split from 0 to 100%. It is further envisaged that the division at several outputs of the optical switching unit is possible at the same time.
- a simultaneous distribution of the pump power to the amplifiers (PA) of the HEL effectors makes it possible to bring several HEL effectors into operation at the same time.
- each pump source can be routed to its own optical switching unit and be divided by this on at least two outputs. Furthermore, with the aid of a plurality of optical switching units having at least two outputs, a cascaded arrangement of 2 n outputs can be realized.
- the individual HEL effector consists in this second embodiment of a shared, central pump source, as well as at least one own MOPA or at least one own oscillator and at least one own beam guidance system.
- the respective MOPA or the respective oscillator of the HEL effectors can be accommodated in the vicinity of the beam guidance system of the HEL effector.
- a direct connection to the platform together with the beam guidance system is also conceivable.
- the optical connection between the pump source and the amplifiers of the MOPA or the oscillators is preferably via optical fibers.
- a free jet variant is also possible.
- the optical connection of the central pump source with the oscillators or the amplifiers of the MOPA is also done here via at least one optical Schaitmaschine.
- the optical switching unit can also be an optical switch or an optical switch.
- the optical switching unit can result in this embodiment, for example, a line of action: pumping unit - fiber (optical path) - optical switching unit - fiber (optical path) - oscillator or amplifier. If several oscillators are used, the outputs of the optical switching unit (s) are connected to a pump input (active medium) of the oscillator, preferably by means of optical fibers.
- an optical connection (fiber, free jet) between the at least one optical switch and the amplifiers or oscillators can be realized with a significantly greater distance than a few meters. Modifications in which an optical path is missing, but are also conceivable in this embodiment.
- Another possibility is to provide a shared master oscillator (MO) separate from the pump source instead of the many individual master oscillators.
- MO master oscillator
- the optical connections between the pump source and the amplifiers of the HEL effectors are carried out according to the second embodiment.
- the created central master oscillator can be located near the pump source, which simplifies the power supply and cooling of the master oscillator.
- the output of the master oscillator can be switched via at least one further optical switching unit to at least one input of the amplifiers (PA) of the HEL effectors.
- the optical connection e.g. optical fiber, between master oscillator and the amplifiers different allowable fiber lengths.
- the single HEL effector in this third, likewise favored version consists of a shared central pump source, a shared Master Oscillator (MO), its own amplifiers (PA) and its own beam guidance systems.
- MO Master Oscillator
- PA amplifiers
- the optical switching units can in turn be spaced from the central laser source or the central pump source and possibly from the central master oscillator (MO). Due to the low beam quality of the pump diodes, an optical connection (fiber, free jet) can be realized here, in particular between the optical switch units and the amplifiers or oscillators, with a significantly greater distance than a few meters. With poorer beam quality, the beam transport into fibers with a larger core diameter takes place at a reduced intensity, so that non-linear processes are reduced.
- MO central master oscillator
- optical switching unit By means of the optical switching unit it is also possible to separate the laser source or the pumping unit from the other components of the HEL effectors.
- the HEL effectors can be transferred to a safety state via the optical switching unit (s).
- central laser sources may be provided as shared key components. This allows the creation of a redundant system. It is also possible to combine several HEL effectors into groups, which can then be operated in parallel.
- a laser source alternatively a pump source, etc.
- a pump source etc.
- the decentralized arrangement of the common, central laser source or pump source, etc. for the multiple HEL effectors also provides the opportunity to accommodate them protected from environmental influences on or in the object.
- the laser sources, pump source possibly the central master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) or the central master oscillator (MO) or central oscillator can now preferably within the object, eg in the hull of a ship or vehicle, are housed. These components are no longer exposed to the environmental requirements of the object. By a local separation also results in another advantage.
- the individual components can be installed in smaller spaces on the object, for example in niches.
- the saving of components is a huge gain.
- Such a slimming of components makes the use of HEL effectors on such objects possible and financially feasible.
- the HEL effectors can be offered more cheaply.
- existing platforms, as of conventional effectors, can be used. For example, the platform of a marine light gun, etc., can be used to hold individual components of the HEL effectors.
- these advantages also apply to other vehicles on land, water and in the air and can be transferred to other objects.
- a target or a threat is detected, it is determined, for example by means of a weapon deployment system, which or soft of the beam guiding system ⁇ e) on the object of the HEL effectors can bring about the best possible defense or neutralization of the threat as quickly as possible.
- the weapon deployment system decides which beam delivery system (s) to use. Alternatively, this may also cause an operator.
- optical linking of the selected beam delivery system (s) occurs as already described.
- the switching of the optical switching unit (s) can be done pneumatically, hydraulically, as well as electrically or electro-optically, other possibilities are not excluded. The switching is controlled by the central control unit.

- FIG. 1 shows a laser source 1 and at least two beam guidance systems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 as key components of several, at least two HEL effectors 5.1, 5.2, 5.3.
- the laser source 1 includes at least one pump source 10, which is formed by at least one pump diode.
- the pump source 10 can be supplied with power and cooled by an energy supply and cooling system 11. This energy supply and cooling system 11 may be part of the laser source 1.
- a master oscillator power amplifier (OPA) 12 e.g., seed laser + amplifier
- OPA master oscillator power amplifier
- an oscillator (single resonator) 13 may be used.
- the individual beam guidance systems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 of the HEL effectors 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 can be connected to the laser source 1 via an optical switching unit 4.
- the HEL effectors 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 thus have a common laser source 1 and individual beam guidance systems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 as their key components.
- the optical switching unit 4 may be an optical switch or an optical switch.
- the optical switching unit has at least one input and at least two outputs.
- the optical switching unit 4 should be designed to be able to divide the laser power (optical power) generated in the laser source 1 for the beam guides 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 of the HEL effectors 5.1, 5.2, 5.3.
- the division can be made continuously or in several stages.
- the optical power can be split between 0 and 100%. It is further provided that a division of the optical power is simultaneously possible, so that a plurality of beam guides 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 can be supplied by the optical switching unit 4 with optical power simultaneously.
- a cascade can be set up with the aid of a plurality of optical switching units 4, via which a division of the laser power onto the beam guides 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 can be realized (FIG. 5).
- the output of the laser source 1 is optically (15) connected to an input of the optical switching unit 4, ideally by an optical fiber. A freewheel is also possible.
- the multiple outputs of the optical switching unit 4 are guided on inputs of the Stra l holdersssysteme 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 via optical connections 15.

- the beam guidance systems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 can in turn be lafettiert on a platform 7, 8, 9.
- the platforms 7, 8, 9 are in turn preferably movable, so that the beam guidance systems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 of the HEL effectors 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 can be pivoted in azimuth and / or elevation. This makes it possible to direct the HEL effectors 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 to the threat (s).
- the HEL effectors 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 are formed in a first embodiment by the common, central laser source 1, the optical switching unit 4, the own beam guidance systems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and the optical connections 15, ideally optical fibers.
- HEL effectors 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 can be combined into one weapon system 100.
- a weapon deployment system e.g. a fire control (not shown in detail) determined which beam guidance system 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 would achieve a good defense against the threat.
- this information is given to the controller 6. This in turn switches the optical switching unit 4 such that the optical power of the laser source 1 is transmitted via the switched output of the optical switching unit 4 and the input of the selected beam guidance system 2.1.
- This beam guiding system 2.1 radiates the optical power against the threat.
- the optical power of the laser source 1 can also be throttled (less than 100%) to the beam guiding system 2.1 by the optical switching unit 4. Should the fire control determine that more than one beam-guiding system 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 is needed for defense, the optical power of the laser source 1 will be split and this split optical power will be distributed to the inputs of the anti-defense systems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 directed. From these, the optical power can then be turned away. the threat against this will be emitted. In this case, the beam guidance systems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 can be addressed together as a threat, as well as separately for different threats.
- FIGS. 2 and 3 show a variant of the solution according to FIG. 1 as a second exemplary embodiment.

- the optical switching unit 4 supplies the amplifiers of the MOPA 22.1, 22.2, 22.3 with pump power of the pump source 10. The mode of operation and the switching of the optical switching unit 4 take place as described for FIG.
- the HEL effectors 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 are in these embodiments by a common pump source 10 (plus power supply and cooling device 11), the optical switching unit 4, the oscillators 21.1, 21.2, 21.3 and MOPA 22.1, 22.2, 22.3 and their own Beam guides 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and the optical connections 15, ideally optical fibers formed.
- FIG 3 shows the variant according to which the entire MOPA 22.2, 22.3 is separated from the pump source 10 in the vicinity of the pumping elements 10 or the beam guiding systems 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 can be attached.
