結合基Z1からZ3を生成する方法に関して、最初にスキームを示す。次に、方法(1)から(11)でスキームに記載した反応を説明する。このスキームにおいて、MSG1(またはMSG2)は少なくとも1つの環を有する1価の有機基である。スキームで用いた複数のMSG1(またはMSG2)が表わす一価の有機基は、同一であってもよいし、または異なってもよい。化合物(1A)から(1J)は化合物(1)に相当する。
公知の方法で合成されるアリールホウ酸(21)とハロゲン化物(22)とを、炭酸塩およびテトラキス(トリフェニルホスフィン)パラジウムのような触媒の存在下で反応させて化合物(1A)を合成する。この化合物(1A)は、公知の方法で合成されるハロゲン化物(23)にn-ブチルリチウムを、次いで塩化亜鉛を反応させ、ジクロロビス(トリフェニルホスフィン)パラジウムのような触媒の存在下でハロゲン化物(22)を反応させることによっても合成される。
ハロゲン化物(23)にn-ブチルリチウムを、続いて二酸化炭素を反応させてカルボン酸(24)を得る。公知の方法で合成される化合物(25)とカルボン酸(24)とをDCC(1,3-ジシクロヘキシルカルボジイミド)とDMAP(4-ジメチルアミノピリジン)の存在下で脱水させて化合物(1B)を合成する。
化合物(1B)をローソン試薬のような硫黄化剤で処理してチオノエステル(26)を得る。チオノエステル(26)をフッ化水素ピリジン錯体とNBS(N-ブロモスクシンイミド)でフッ素化し、化合物(1C)を合成する。M. Kuroboshi et al., Chem. Lett., 1992,827.を参照。化合物(1C)はチオノエステル(26)をDAST((ジエチルアミノ)サルファートリフルオリド)でフッ素化しても合成される。W. H. Bunnelle et al., J. Org. Chem. 1990, 55, 768.を参照。Peer. Kirsch et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2001, 40, 1480. に記載の方法によってこの結合基を生成させることも可能である。
ハロゲン化物(22)をn-ブチルリチウムで処理した後、DMF(N,N-ジメチルホルムアミド)などのホルムアミドと反応させてアルデヒド(28)を得る。公知の方法で合成されるホスホニウム塩(27)をカリウムt-ブトキシドのような塩基で処理してリンイリドを発生させる。このリンイリドをアルデヒド(28)に反応させて化合物(1D)を合成する。反応条件によってはシス体が生成するので、必要に応じて公知の方法によりシス体をトランス体に異性化する。
化合物(1D)をパラジウム炭素のような触媒の存在下で水素化することにより、化合物(1E)を合成する。
ホスホニウム塩(27)の代わりにホスホニウム塩(29)を用い、方法(4)の方法に従って-(CH2)2-CH=CH-を有する化合物を得る。これを接触水素化して化合物(1F)を合成する。
ホスホニウム塩(27)の代わりにホスホニウム塩(30)を、アルデヒド(28)の代わりにアルデヒド(31)を用い、方法(4)の方法に従って化合物(1G)を合成する。反応条件によってはトランス体が生成するので、必要に応じて公知の方法によりトランス体をシス体に異性化する。
ジクロロパラジウムとハロゲン化銅との触媒存在下で、ハロゲン化物(23)に2-メチル-3-ブチン-2-オールを反応させたのち、塩基性条件下で脱保護して化合物(32)を得る。ジクロロパラジウムとハロゲン化銅との触媒存在下、化合物(32)をハロゲン化物(22)と反応させて、化合物(1H)を合成する。
ハロゲン化物(23)をn-ブチルリチウムで処理したあと、テトラフルオロエチレンを反応させて化合物(33)を得る。ハロゲン化物(22)をn-ブチルリチウムで処理したあと化合物(33)と反応させて化合物(1I)を合成する。
アルデヒド(28)を水素化ホウ素ナトリウムなどの還元剤で還元して化合物(34)を得る。化合物(34)を臭化水素酸などで臭素化して臭化物(35)を得る。炭酸カリウムなどの塩基存在下で、臭化物(35)を化合物(36)と反応させて化合物(1J)を合成する。
J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2001, 123, 5414. に記載された方法に従い、ジケトン(-COCO-)をフッ化水素触媒の存在下、四フッ化硫黄でフッ素化して-(CF2)2-を有する化合物を得る。
炭酸カリウムなどの塩基存在下で、臭化物(35)を化合物(37)と反応させて化合物(1K)を合成する。
1,4-シクロヘキシレン、1,4-フェニレン、2-フルオロ-1,4-フェニレン、または2,6-ジフルオロ-1,4-フェニレンのような環に関しては出発物が市販されているか、または生成法がよく知られている。テトラヒドロピラン-2,5-ジイルの生成については特開2013-241397号公報の段落0084から0107を参照のこと。1,3-ジオキサン-2,5-ジイルの生成については特開2009-132927号公報の段落0096から0119を参照のこと。ピリミジン-2,5-ジイルおよびピリジン-2,5-ジイルの生成については国際公開2010/047260号公報の段落0086から0094を参照のこと。
化合物(1)を合成する方法の例は、次のとおりである。一例として、化合物(1B)のZ2がCF2Oであり、Y1が水素である化合物(50)の合成法を以下に示す。市販されているカルボン酸(41)に塩化オキサリルを反応させて酸塩化物(42)を得る。酸塩化物(42)に塩化アルミニウム存在下、エチレンガスを反応させてケトン(43)を得る。ケトン(43)にNBS(N-ブロモスクシンイミド)の存在下、臭化水素酸を反応させてフェノール(44)を得る。フェノール(44)にTBAB(テトラブチルアンモニウムブロミド)と炭酸カリウムの存在下、公知の方法で合成できる化合物(45)を反応させて化合物(46)を得る。化合物(46)にBuLi、次いでヨウ素を反応させて化合物(47)を得る。化合物(47)にPd(PPh3)2Cl2およびヨウ化銅存在下、トリメチルシリルアセチレンを反応させて化合物(48)を得る。化合物(48)に炭酸カリウムを反応させて化合物(49)を得る。化合物(49)にヨウ化銅およびTMEDA(テトラメチルエチレンジアミン)と炭酸カリウムの存在下、TMSCF3を反応させて化合物(50)を合成する。これらの化合物において、R1、環A1などの記号の定義は、項1に記載した記号の定義と同一である。
3-1.成分化合物
本発明の液晶組成物について説明をする。この組成物は、少なくとも1つの化合物(1)を成分Aとして含む。この組成物は、2つまたは3つ以上の化合物(1)を含んでもよい。組成物の成分が化合物(1)のみであってもよい。組成物は、化合物(1)の少なくとも1つを1重量%から99重量%の範囲で含有することが、優良な物性を発現させるために好ましい。誘電率異方性が正である組成物において、化合物(1)の好ましい含有量は5重量%から60重量%の範囲である。誘電率異方性が負である組成物において、化合物(1)の好ましい含有量は30重量%以下である。
液晶組成物は公知の方法によって調製される。例えば、成分化合物を混合し、そして加熱によって互いに溶解させる。用途に応じて、この組成物に添加物を添加してよい。添加物の例は、重合性化合物、重合開始剤、重合禁止剤、光学活性化合物、酸化防止剤、紫外線吸収剤、光安定剤、熱安定剤、色素、消泡剤などである。このような添加物は当業者によく知られており、文献に記載されている。
液晶組成物は、PC、TN、STN、OCB、PSAなどの動作モードを有し、アクティブマトリックス方式で駆動する液晶表示素子に使用できる。この組成物は、PC、TN、STN、OCB、VA、IPSなどの動作モードを有し、パッシブマトリクス方式で駆動する液晶表示素子にも使用することができる。これらの素子は、反射型、透過型、半透過型のいずれのタイプにも適用ができる。
実施例により本発明をさらに詳しく説明する。実施例は典型的な例であるので、本発明は実施例によって制限されない。本発明は、使用例1の組成物と使用例2の組成物との混合物を含む。本発明は、使用例の組成物の少なくとも2つを混合した混合物をも含む。化合物(1)は、下記の手順により合成した。合成した化合物は、NMR分析などの方法により同定した。化合物や組成物の物性、および素子の特性は、下記の方法により測定した。
窒素雰囲気下、公知の方法で合成した化合物(S-1)(1.75g、9.71mmol)、化合物(S-2)(3.96g、9.71mmol)、炭酸カリウム(2.82g、20.4mmol)、テトラブチルアンモニウムブロミド(0.157g、0.49mmol)、およびDMF(20ml)を反応器に入れて、90℃に加熱し3時間撹拌した。反応混合物を水へ注ぎ込み、水層をトルエンで抽出した。合わせた有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー(ヘプタン/酢酸エチル=10/1、容積比)で精製して、化合物(S-3)(3.77g、収率76.6%)を得た。
窒素雰囲気下、化合物(S-3)(3.77g、7.44mmol)およびTHF(60ml)を反応器に入れて、-70℃に冷却した。そこへn-BuLi(1.55M;n-ヘキサン溶液;5.04ml)をゆっくりと滴下した。滴下後、-70℃を維持して1時間攪拌した。次に、ヨウ素(2.27g、8.93mmol)のTHF(10ml)溶液をゆっくりと滴下した。滴下後、室温まで昇温し、さらに室温で12時間撹拌した。反応混合物を水へ注ぎ込み、水層を酢酸エチルで抽出した。合わせた有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルクロマトグラフィー(ヘプタン/酢酸エチル=10/1、容積比)で精製して、化合物(S-4)(4.03g、収率85.6%)を得た。
窒素雰囲気下、化合物(S-4)(4.03g、6.37mmol)、トリメチルシリルアセチレン(0.97ml、7.01mmol)、Pd(PPh3)2Cl2(0.447g、0.64mmol)、ヨウ化銅(0.121g、0.64mmol)、およびトリエチルアミン(60ml)を反応器に入れて、室温で2時間攪拌した。反応混合物を水へ注ぎ込み、水層をトルエンで抽出した。合わせた有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー(ヘプタン/トルエン=10/1、容積比)で精製して、化合物(S-5)(3.33g、収率86.7%)を得た。
窒素雰囲気下、化合物(S-5)(3.33g、5.53mmol)、ジクロロメタン(16ml)、およびメタノール(20ml)を反応器に入れて、室温で攪拌した。そこへ炭酸カリウム(0.916g、6.63mmol)を少しずつ加え、室温で6時間攪拌した。反応混合物を水へ注ぎ込み、水層をトルエンで抽出した。合わせた有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー(ヘプタン/トルエン=5/1、容積比)で精製して、化合物(S-6)(2.62g、収率89.4%)を得た。
空気下、ヨウ化銅(1.27g、6.64mmol)、炭酸カリウム(1.84g、13.3mmol)、TMEDA(1.00ml、6.64mmol)、およびDMF(20ml)を反応器に入れて、室温で15分攪拌した。そこへルパート試薬(1.32ml、8.86mmol)を加え、室温で5分攪拌した後、0℃に冷却した。そこへ0℃に冷却した化合物(S-6)(2.35g、4.43mmol)およびルパート試薬(1.32ml、8.86mmol)のDMF(20ml)溶液を加え、0℃を維持して30分攪拌した。その後室温まで昇温し、さらに室温で12時間撹拌した。反応混合物を水へ注ぎ込み、水層をトルエンで抽出した。合わせた有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー(ヘプタン/トルエン=20/1、容積比)で精製した。さらにIPA/酢酸エチル=5/1(容積比)の混合溶媒からの再結晶により精製して、化合物(No.290)(0.82g、収率27.8%)を得た。
窒素雰囲気下、公知の方法で合成した化合物(S-1)(1.83g、10.2mmol)、化合物(S-7)(4.91g、10.2mmol)、炭酸カリウム(2.95g、21.3mmol)、テトラブチルアンモニウムブロミド(0.164g、0.51mmol)、およびDMF(50ml)を反応器に入れて、90℃に加熱し5.5時間撹拌した。反応混合物を水へ注ぎ込み、水層をトルエンで抽出した。合わせた有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー(ヘプタン/トルエン=10/1、容積比)で精製して、化合物(S-8)(3.51g、収率59%)を得た。
合成例1と同様の方法で合成し、化合物(S-9)(7.19g、収率89.4%)を得た。
合成例1と同様の方法で合成し、化合物(S-10)(6.89g、収率100%)を得た。
合成例1と同様の方法で合成し、化合物(S-11)(5.79g、収率94.0%)を得た。
合成例1と同様の方法で合成し、化合物(No.614)(2.22g、収率38.7%)を得た。
上限温度、光学的異方性、および誘電率異方性の測定には、化合物と母液晶との割合が5重量%:95重量%である試料を用いた。
転移温度:C 102 SA 205 N 212 I.
上限温度(TNI)=158℃;誘電率異方性(Δε)=52.1;光学異方性(Δn)=0.297.
窒素雰囲気下、化合物(S-12)(10.7g、62.2mmol)、化合物(S-13)(10.0g、51.8mmol)、Pd-132(0.367g、0.518mmol)、炭酸セシウム(33.8g、103mmol)、およびアセトニトリル(215ml)を反応器に入れて5時間加熱還流した。反応混合物を水へ注ぎ込み、水層をトルエンで抽出した。合わせた有機層を塩化アンモニウム水溶液および水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー(ヘプタン)で精製して、化合物(S-14)(12.9g、収率87.8%)を得た。
窒素雰囲気下、化合物(S-14)(12.9g、45.4mmol)およびTHF(100ml)を反応器に入れて、-70℃に冷却した。そこへn-BuLi(1.64M;n-ヘキサン溶液;29.1ml)をゆっくりと滴下した。滴下後、-70℃を維持して1時間攪拌した。次に、ジブロモジフルオロメタン(10.5g、49.9mmol)のTHF(15ml)溶液をゆっくりと滴下した。滴下後、-70℃を維持して1時間攪拌した。その後室温まで昇温し、さらに室温で1時間撹拌した。反応混合物を水へ注ぎ込み、水層を酢酸エチルで抽出した。合わせた有機層を水で洗浄し、無水硫酸マグネシウムで乾燥した。この溶液を減圧下で濃縮し、残渣をシリカゲルクロマトグラフィー(ヘプタン)で精製して、化合物(S-15)(13.7g、収率73.1%)を得た。
合成例2と同様の方法で合成し、化合物(S-16)(5.49g、収率38.0%)を得た。
合成例1と同様の方法で合成し、化合物(S-17)(4.18g、収率61.4%)を得た。
合成例1と同様の方法で合成し、化合物(S-18)(5.08g、収率100%)を得た。

物性の比較
比較化合物として下記の化合物(C-1)を選んだ。この化合物はナフタレン環の代わりにベンゼン環を有している点で本発明の化合物とは異なるからである。この化合物は、公知の方法で合成した化合物(S-50)を出発物質に用いて、合成例1と同様にして合成した。
化合物(1)は、上に記載した「2.化合物(1)の合成」および合成例に従って合成する。このような化合物の例として、以下に示す化合物(No.1)から(No.120)、(No.130)から(No.539)、および(No.550)から(No.679)を挙げることができる。
実施例により本発明をさらに詳しく説明する。実施例は典型的な例であるので、本発明は実施例によって制限されない。例えば、本発明は、使用例の組成物に加えて、使用例1の組成物と使用例2の組成物との混合物を含む。本発明は、使用例の組成物の少なくとも2つを混合することによって調製した混合物をも含む。使用例における化合物は、下記の表3の定義に基づいて記号により表した。表3において、1,4-シクロヘキシレンに関する立体配置はトランスである。記号化された化合物の後にあるかっこ内の番号は、化合物が属する化学式を表す。(-)の記号は、化合物(1)から(15)とは異なる液晶性化合物を意味する。液晶性化合物の割合(百分率)は、添加物を含まない液晶組成物の重量に基づいた重量百分率(重量%)である。最後に、組成物の物性値をまとめた。物性は、先に記載した方法にしたがって測定し、測定値を(外挿することなく)そのまま記載した。

Claims (20)
- 式(1)で表される化合物。
式(1)において、
Rは炭素数1から15のアルキルであり、このアルキルにおいて、少なくとも1つの-CH2-は-O-または-S-で置き換えられてもよく、少なくとも1つの-CH2CH2-は-CH=CH-で置き換えられてもよく、これらの基において、少なくとも1つの水素はフッ素または塩素で置き換えられてもよく;
環A1および環A2は独立して、1,4-シクロヘキシレン、1,4-シクロヘキセニレン、1,4-フェニレン、テトラヒドロピラン-2,5-ジイル、1,3-ジオキサン-2,5-ジイル、2,6,7-トリオキサビシクロ[2.2.2]オクタン-1,4-ジイル、ナフタレン-2,6-ジイル、デカヒドロナフタレン-2,6-ジイル、1,2,3,4-テトラヒドロナフタレン-2,6-ジイル、ピリジン-2,5-ジイル、またはピリミジン-2,5-ジイルであり、これらの環において、少なくとも1つの水素はフッ素または塩素で置き換えられてもよく;
Z1およびZ2は独立して、単結合、-CH2CH2-、-CH=CH-、-C≡C-、-COO-、-OCO-、-CH2O-、-OCH2-、-CH2S-、-SCH2-、-CF2O-、-OCF2-、または-CF=CF-であり;
Y1、Y2、およびY3は独立して、水素、フッ素、または塩素であり;

環A1は、1,4-シクロヘキシレン、1,4-シクロヘキセニレン、1,4-フェニレン、2-フルオロ-1,4-フェニレン、2,6-ジフルオロ-1,4-フェニレン、テトラヒドロピラン-2,5-ジイル、1,3-ジオキサン-2,5-ジイル、2,6,7-トリオキサビシクロ[2.2.2]オクタン-1,4-ジイル、ピリジン-2,5-ジイル、ピリミジン-2,5-ジイル、ナフタレン-2,6-ジイル、1-フルオロナフタレン-2,6-ジイル、1,3-ジフルオロナフタレン-2,6-ジイル、または1,3,8-トリフルオロナフタレン-2,6-ジイルであり;
Z1は、単結合、-CH2CH2-、-CH=CH-、-C≡C-、-COO-、-OCO-、-CH2O-、-OCH2-、-CH2S-、-SCH2-、-CF2O-、または-OCF2-であり;
Y1、Y2、およびY3は独立して、水素またはフッ素である。 - 式(1A-1)から(1A-3)のいずれか1つで表される、請求項1に記載の化合物。

環A1は、1,4-シクロヘキシレン、1,4-フェニレン、2-フルオロ-1,4-フェニレン、2,6-ジフルオロ-1,4-フェニレン、1,3-ジオキサン-2,5-ジイル、2,6,7-トリオキサビシクロ[2.2.2]オクタン-1,4-ジイル、ピリジン-2,5-ジイル、ピリミジン-2,5-ジイル、ナフタレン-2,6-ジイル、1-フルオロナフタレン-2,6-ジイル、1,3-ジフルオロナフタレン-2,6-ジイル、または1,3,8-トリフルオロナフタレン-2,6-ジイルであり;

Rは、炭素数1から10のアルキル、炭素数1から9のアルコキシ、炭素数2から10のアルケニル、炭素数2から9のアルケニルオキシ、炭素数1から9のアルキルチオ、または炭素数2から9のアルケニルチオであり;
