Definitions
- the present invention relates to a technique for electrochemically hydrogenating aromatic compounds.
- Cyclic organic compounds such as cyclohexane and decalin are known to be efficiently obtained by nuclear hydrogenation of corresponding aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (benzene, naphthalene) using hydrogen gas. Since this reaction requires high-temperature and high-pressure reaction conditions, it is not suitable for small to medium-scale production. In contrast, an electrochemical reaction using an electrolytic cell does not require handling of gaseous hydrogen because water can be used as a hydrogen source, and the reaction conditions are relatively mild (room temperature to about 200 ° C., normal pressure). ) Is known to proceed.
- the present inventors examined a method for introducing an aromatic hydrocarbon compound directly into the reduction electrode side of the electrolytic cell as a liquid as an improvement measure.
- the electrolytic hydrogenation reaction can proceed at a higher current density than the method of introducing the vaporized aromatic hydrocarbon compound.
- a technique for extending the life of an electrolytic cell that performs a nuclear hydrogenation reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon compound supplied as a liquid has not been sufficiently studied, and remains as a future problem.

- the mass ratio I / C is lower than 0.1, it may be difficult to obtain sufficient ionic conductivity.

There is a possibility that the organic substance cross-leaks to the oxygen generation electrode 130 side through the electrolyte membrane 110. For this reason, on the oxygen generating electrode 130 side, the organic substance or a compound in which the organic substance is oxidized by the noble potential oxygen generating electrode 130 (for example, an oxygen-containing compound such as aldehyde or carboxylic acid) is used. There may be substances that adversely affect the electrode 130.
- an oxygen-containing compound such as aldehyde or carboxylic acid
- the catalyst on the anode side is a problem of agglomeration of the catalytic metal, corrosion of the base material, peeling of the catalytic metal layer and the base material due to a small amount of organic matter.
- the concentration of the organic substance to which the oxygen generating electrode 130 is exposed is much higher than that of the existing water electrolysis and salt electrolysis (digits are different).
- the oxygen generating electrode 130 is required to maintain electrode performance for a predetermined time in a state where a large amount of an aromatic compound and an oxygen-containing compound coexist. Since the oxygen generating electrode 130 is exposed to an acid, an aromatic compound, oxygen, and the like, all of the metal substrate, the interface between the metal substrate and the catalyst, and the catalyst are easily deteriorated.
- the electrochemical reduction device 10 Under such circumstances, in the electrochemical reduction device 10, a large amount of an aromatic compound and an oxygen-containing compound coexist by holding the catalyst 136 on the metal substrate 132 covered with the protective layer 134 in the oxygen generating electrode 130. Under such conditions, aggregation of the catalyst 136, corrosion of the metal substrate 132, and separation of the catalyst 136 from the metal substrate 132 can be suppressed. As a result, the electrode performance of the electrode unit can be maintained for a longer period.
- the protective layer 134 preferably contains at least one of Nb, Mo, Ta, W and oxides thereof.
- Table 1 shows the configurations of the electrode units of Example 1 and Comparative Example 1. Durability evaluation of each electrode unit was performed using toluene as an aromatic compound.
- FIG. 5 is a graph showing changes in the potential and overvoltage of the oxygen generating electrode when the electrode units of Example 1 and Comparative Example 1 are used. A constant concentration of toluene was supplied to the reducing electrode side. As shown in FIG. 5, the electrode unit of Example 1 having a protective layer between the metal substrate and the catalyst has a longer initial performance than the electrode unit of Comparative Example 1 having no protective layer. It was confirmed that the electrode performance close to 1 can be maintained. In Comparative Example 1, the rate of increase in the potential of the oxygen generating electrode after the nuclear hydrogenation reaction was continued for 1000 hours was 15.8%.
- Example 1 the increase rate was suppressed to 1.2%. Therefore, for example, even if the durability target of the electrode unit is set to 5% / 1000 h, it was confirmed that sufficient durability can be secured. Moreover, in the comparative example 1, the increase rate of the overvoltage after continuing the nuclear hydrogenation reaction for 1000 hours was 61.9%. On the other hand, in Example 1, the increase rate was suppressed to 4.5%. Therefore, for example, even when the durability target of the electrode unit is set to 10% / 1000 h, it was confirmed that sufficient durability can be secured.
- Electrochemical reduction device 20 Power control unit, 30 Organic storage tank, 40 Water storage tank, 50 Air / water separation unit, 60 Control unit, 100 Electrode unit, 112, Reference electrode, 113 Current detection unit, 114 Voltage detection unit, 110 electrolyte membrane, 120 reduction electrode, 122 reduction electrode catalyst layer, 130 oxygen generation electrode, 132 metal substrate, 134 protective layer, 136 catalyst, 140 diffusion layer, 142 dense layer, 150 separator, 160 current collector
