 傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を生成する複数の参照信号生成部をさらに備え、複数の前記比較部は、前記アナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部により生成された参照信号と比較することができる。
 複数の前記参照信号生成部は、互いに同一のタイミングで前記参照信号の生成を開始することができる。
 傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成した後、前記ランプ波とその他の傾きのランプ波とが電圧的に交差しないタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始することができる。

 本開示の他の側面は、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を、互いに異なるタイミングで生成する複数の参照信号生成部と、光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部が生成した前記参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタとを備える撮像素子である。
 傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成した後、前記ランプ波とその他の傾きのランプ波とが電圧的に交差しないタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始するようにすることができる。
 傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成する前のタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始するようにすることができる。
 選択されたカウンタが対応する比較器が利用する参照信号の電圧範囲を示すフラグ情報が、前記カウント値とともに出力されるようにすることができる。
 本開示の他の側面は、また、撮像素子の制御方法であって、複数の参照信号生成部が、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を、互いに異なるタイミングで生成し、複数の比較部が、光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部が生成した前記参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力し、複数のカウンタが、互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する制御方法である。
 本開示の他の側面は、さらに、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を、互いに異なるタイミングで生成する複数の参照信号生成部と、光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部が生成した前記参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタとを有する撮像素子と、前記撮像素子より出力される撮像画像のデジタルデータを画像処理する画像処理部と、前記画像処理部により画像処理された前記撮像画像のデジタルデータを記憶する記憶部とを備える撮像装置である。
 本開示の一側面においては、光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号が、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号と比較され、比較結果が出力され、互いに異なる比較部について、比較結果が反転するまでがカウントされ、カウント値がデジタルデータとして出力され、アナログ信号と傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波以外のランプ波の参照信号との比較を行う比較部が比較を開始する前に、垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号が保持され、比較部が比較を行う間、垂直信号線と比較部との間が電気的に切断されるとともに、保持しているアナログ信号が比較部に供給される。
 本開示の他の側面においては、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号が、互いに異なるタイミングで生成され、光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号が、互いに異なる参照信号生成部が生成した参照信号と比較され、比較結果が出力され、互いに異なる比較部について、比較結果が反転するまでがカウントされ、カウント値がデジタルデータとして出力される。
 本開示によれば、被写体を撮像することができる。特に、より高画質な画像を得ることができる。

 以下、本技術を実施するための形態(以下実施の形態とする)について説明する。なお、説明は以下の順序で行う。

 [積分型A/D変換]
 最初に、ランプ波形を参照電圧として利用する積分型A/D(Analog / Digital)変換について説明する。ランプ波形を参照電圧とした時間積分型のA/D変換器は、線形性やノイズ特性が良く、他のA/D変換方式と比較してCMOS(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)イメージセンサとの相性が良いので、CMOSイメージセンサにおいて広く利用されている。
 CMOSイメージセンサにおいては、例えば、画素列毎にA/D変換器(カラムADC(Analog Digital Converter)とも称する)が設けられ、垂直信号線出力(画素値等)がA/D変換される。このようにA/D変換器(カラムADC)を画素列毎に配置することにより、複数個のA/D変換器を同時に動作させる(各列のA/D変換を並行して行う)ことができるので、A/D変換器1個あたりの動作周波数を低減させることができる。
 時間積分型のA/D変換器の場合、このように複数配置されたA/D変換器同士で参照電圧生成器を共有することが出来るため、面積・電力効率が良い。したがって、画素列毎のA/D変換器(カラムADC)として好適である。
 しかしながら、時間積分型のA/D変換器の場合、高階調化と変換速度がトレードオフの関係にある。そのため、出力データのビット階調を増やすためにはフレームレートを犠牲にする(フレームレートを低減させる)必要があった。
 図1は、センサ出力を1ビット増やした場合の1度のA/D変換時間を示している。あるビット階調出力が、参照電圧生成回路のゲイン0dBの傾きをもったランプ波参照電圧と時間Tをかけて比較動作を行うとする。出力ビット数を1ビット増やすためには参照電圧のゲインを6dBとして動作させ、参照電圧のランプ波傾きを2分の1にするため、ダイナミックレンジを損なわずにフルスケールのA/D変換をしようとすると2倍の変換時間2Tがかかる。フレームレートを犠牲にせずに出力ビット数を増やす手法としては、カウント周波数を上げる手法も有効だが動作の信頼性を考慮すると使用できる周波数には限界がある。A/D変換器を倍増して並列に処理させる手法も考えられるが、消費電力や回路面積が倍増してしまう。
 そこで、撮像素子への入力(光の強さ)に対して複数の区間に区分けして出力の傾きを設定し、それぞれ複数の線形A/D変換器を同時並列動作させる方法が考えられた。しかしながら、この方法の場合、複数のA/D変換器が接続されるため、あるA/D変換器におけるキックバックの発生による入力信号の揺らぎが、他の動作中のA/D変換器に伝搬し、A/D変換が不正確なものとなり、結果として画像にノイズが生じてしまい、画質が低減する恐れがあった。
 図2は、キックバックによるノイズの発生の様子の例を説明する図である。傾きの異なる複数のランプ波で同時に比較動作を開始した場合、比較する画素信号レベルは同じであるため、必ず傾きの急なランプ波の方の比較器が先に出力を反転する。図2に示されるように、この比較器の出力反転がフィードバック経路を介して伝わり、画素垂直信号線の画素信号が揺らいでしまう恐れがあった。
 複数の比較器の入力として垂直信号線を共有しているため、この揺らいだ画素信号が、もう一方の傾きの緩やかなランプ波との比較動作に影響を及ぼし、理想的なカウント値よりも先に比較器を反転させてしまう恐れがあった。すなわち、最も精度の必要な信号であるのに、大きなノイズの乗った信号として出力されてしまう恐れがあった。つまり、この場合、より高精度が求められる低照度の画素信号に大きなノイズが乗っているので、画像に視覚的な影響が大きい(より目立つ可能性の高い)ノイズが乗ることになり、画質が大幅に低減する恐れがあった。
 [イメージセンサ]
 そこで、本開示では、このようなキックバックによるノイズの発生を抑制する技術について説明する。
 図3は、本技術を適用したイメージセンサの一部の構成例を示すブロック図である。図3に示されるCMOS(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)イメージセンサ100は、被写体を撮像し、撮像画像のデジタルデータを得る撮像素子である。
 CMOSイメージセンサ100は、互いに階調の異なる参照信号を用いてA/D変換を行う複数のA/D変換部を1垂直信号線に対して設けることにより、フレームレートを犠牲にせずに部分的に高階調なA/D変換動作を実現する。
 CMOSイメージセンサ100は、そのA/D変換中において、最も高階調でない参照信号を用いるA/D変換部の垂直信号線入力を、他の回路と電気的に切断することにより、キックバックの影響の、他のA/D変換部への伝搬を抑制する。このようにすることにより、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、キックバックによるノイズの発生を抑制することができる。
 以下に、より具体的に説明する。
 図3に示されるように、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、半導体基板(以下、「チップ」と記述する場合もある)101上に形成された画素アレイ部102と、当該画素アレイ部102と同じチップ101上に集積された周辺回路部とを有する構成となっている。本例では、周辺回路部として、例えば、行走査部103、カラム処理部104、列走査部105、およびシステム制御部106が設けられている。
 画素アレイ部102には、入射光量に応じた電荷量の光電荷を発生して内部に蓄積する光電変換素子を有する単位画素(以下、単に「画素」と記述する場合もある)120が行列状に2次元配置されている。図3において画素アレイ部102中の正方形がそれぞれ画素120を示している。なお、図3においては、行列状に配列された画素120の内、右上端の画素120にのみ符号をふっているが、特に区別して説明する必要が無い場合、行列状に配列されたどの画素も「画素120」と称する。
 画素アレイ部102にはさらに、行列状の画素配列に対して画素行ごとに画素駆動線107が水平方向/行方向(画素行の画素の配列方向)に沿って配線され、画素列ごとに垂直信号線108が垂直方向/列方向(画素列の画素の配列方向)に沿って配線されている。画素駆動線107は、画素から信号を読み出すための駆動を行う駆動信号を伝送する。図3では、画素駆動線107について1本の配線として図示しているが、1本に限られるものではない。画素駆動線107の一端は、行走査部103の各行に対応した出力端に接続されている。
 行走査部103は、シフトレジスタやアドレスデコーダ等によって構成され、画素アレイ部102の各画素120を、全画素同時あるいは行単位等で駆動する画素駆動部である。この行走査部103はその具体的な構成については図示を省略するが、一般的に、読出し走査系と掃出し走査系の2つの走査系を有する構成となっている。
 読出し走査系は、単位画素から信号を読み出すために、画素アレイ部102の単位画素を行単位で順に選択走査する。単位画素から読み出される信号はアナログ信号である。掃出し走査系は、読出し走査系によって読出し走査が行われる読出し行に対して、その読出し走査よりもシャッタスピードの時間分だけ先行して掃出し走査を行う。
 この掃出し走査系による掃出し走査により、読出し行の単位画素の光電変換素子から不要な電荷が掃出されることで、当該光電変換素子がリセットされる。そして、この掃出し走査系による不要電荷の掃出し(リセット)により、いわゆる電子シャッタ動作が行われる。ここで、電子シャッタ動作とは、光電変換素子の光電荷を捨てて、新たに露光を開始する(光電荷の蓄積を開始する)動作のことを言う。
 読出し走査系による読出し動作によって読み出される信号は、その直前の読出し動作または電子シャッタ動作以降に入射した光量に対応するものである。そして、直前の読出し動作による読出しタイミングまたは電子シャッタ動作による掃出しタイミングから、今回の読出し動作による読出しタイミングまでの期間が、単位画素における光電荷の蓄積期間(露光期間)となる。
 行走査部103によって選択走査された画素行の各画素120から出力される信号は、垂直信号線108の各々を通してカラム処理部104に供給される。カラム処理部104は、画素アレイ部102の画素列ごとに、行走査部103による選択行の各画素120から垂直信号線108を通して出力される信号に対して所定の信号処理を行うとともに、信号処理後の画素信号を一時的に保持する。
 具体的には、カラム処理部104は、単位画素120の信号を受けて当該信号に対して、例えばCDS(Correlated Double Sampling;相関二重サンプリング)によるノイズ除去や、信号増幅や、A/D変換等の信号処理を行う。
 CDSによるノイズ除去処理は、例えば、単位画素(実際には、後述するフローティングディフュージョン部)をリセットしたときに読み出されるリセットレベルと、光電変換素子で光電変換した信号電荷に応じて読み出される信号レベルとの差分をとることによって行われる。このノイズ除去処理により、リセットノイズや増幅トランジスタの閾値ばらつき等の画素固有の固定パターンノイズが除去される。なお、ここで例示した信号処理は一例に過ぎず、信号処理としてはこれらに限られるものではない。
 カラム処理部104には、画素列毎のカラムADCが設けられている。上述した画素列毎のA/D変換は、これらのカラムADCにより行われる。カラムADCの詳細については後述するが、カラム処理部104は、複数の参照信号生成回路を有する。各参照信号生成回路は参照信号としてランプ波を生成する。ただし、各参照信号生成回路が生成するランプ波の傾きは、互いに異なる。
 カラムADCは、上述したように、1垂直信号線に対して複数のA/D変換部を有する。この複数のA/D変換部は、互いに異なる参照信号生成回路が生成した参照信号を利用する。つまり、各A/D変換部は、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波を利用する。ランプ波の傾きが緩やかである程、A/D変換部は、より高階調なA/D変換を行うことができる(出力ビット数を増大させることができる)。つまり、カラムADCは、複数種類の階調でA/D変換を行うことができる。
 上述したようにランプ波の傾きが緩やかになるとA/D変換の処理時間が増大する恐れがある。そこで、カラムADCは、垂直信号線出力が取りうる値の範囲を複数の領域(照度領域)に分割し、一部の照度領域についてのみ、傾きが緩やかなランプ波を利用して高階調なA/D変換を行う。一般的に、より精度の細かい画像データが要求されるのは、画素出力信号の小さい低照度領域である。
 したがって、カラムADCは、予め設定された最も低照度な領域についてのみ、傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波を利用して最も高階調なA/D変換を行い、全体に対しては、傾きが急なランプ波を利用して最も高階調でないA/D変換を行う。
 このようにすることにより、カラム処理部104のカラムADCは、フレームレートを犠牲にせずに部分的に高階調なA/D変換動作を実現することができる。
 図3の例の場合、参照信号生成回路として、参照信号生成回路131および参照信号生成回路132が設けられている。参照信号生成回路131が、高階調なA/D変換に用いられる参照信号を生成し、参照信号生成回路132が、低階調なA/D変換に用いられる参照信号を生成する。つまり、参照信号生成回路131は、参照信号生成回路132よりも傾きが緩やかなランプ波を参照信号として生成する。参照信号生成回路131および参照信号生成回路132が生成した各参照信号(ランプ波)は、各カラムADCの、それぞれに対応するA/D変換部に供給される。
 図3の例の場合、各垂直信号線に対して2つずつA/D変換部が設けられている。その内の一方のA/D変換部が、参照信号生成回路131が生成した傾きが緩やかなランプ波を利用して高階調なA/D変換を行い、他方のA/D変換部が、参照信号生成回路132が生成した傾きが急なランプ波を利用して低階調なA/D変換を行う。
 列走査部105は、シフトレジスタやアドレスデコーダ等によって構成され、カラム処理部104の画素列に対応する単位回路を順番に選択する。この列走査部105による選択走査により、カラム処理部104で信号処理された画素信号が順番に水平バス109に出力され、当該水平バス109を介して出力端子(Vout)110に供給され、その出力端子110から半導体基板101(CMOSイメージセンサ100)の外部へ伝送される。
 システム制御部106は、半導体基板101の外部から与えられるクロックや、動作モードを指令するデータなどを受け取り、また、CMOSイメージセンサ100の内部情報などのデータを出力する。システム制御部106はさらに、各種のタイミング信号を生成するタイミングジェネレータを有し、当該タイミングジェネレータで生成された各種のタイミング信号を基に、直接的または間接的に、行走査部103、カラム処理部104、および列走査部105などの周辺回路部の駆動制御を行う。
 例えば、システム制御部106は、カラム処理部104の参照信号生成回路131および参照信号生成回路132による参照信号の生成を制御する。また、例えば、システム制御部106は、列走査部105を制御することにより、カラム処理部104内の各カラムADCの動作を制御する。
 [画素構成]
 図4は、画素120の回路構成の一例を示す回路図である。図4に示されるように、画素120は、光電変換部である例えばフォトダイオード121に加えて、例えば転送トランジスタ122、リセットトランジスタ123、増幅トランジスタ124、および選択トランジスタ125の4つのトランジスタを有する。
 ここでは、この4つのトランジスタ(転送トランジスタ122乃至選択トランジスタ125)として、例えばNチャネルのMOS(Metal Oxide Semiconductor)トランジスタを用いている。ただし、ここで例示した転送トランジスタ122、リセットトランジスタ123、増幅トランジスタ124、および選択トランジスタ125の導電型の組み合わせは一例に過ぎず、これらの組み合わせに限られるものではない。
 この画素120に対して、画素駆動線107として、例えば、転送線107-1、リセット線107-2および選択線107-3の3本の駆動配線が同一画素行の各画素について共通に設けられている。これら転送線107-1、リセット線107-2、および選択線107-3は、各一端が行走査部103の各画素行に対応した出力端に画素行単位で接続されており、画素120を駆動する駆動信号である転送パルスφTRF、リセットパルスφRST、および選択パルスφSELを伝送する。
 フォトダイオード121は、アノード電極が負側電源(例えば、グランド)に接続されており、受光した光をその光量に応じた電荷量の光電荷(ここでは、光電子)に光電変換してその光電荷を蓄積する。フォトダイオード121のカソード電極は、転送トランジスタ122を介して増幅トランジスタ124のゲート電極と電気的に接続されている。増幅トランジスタ124のゲート電極と電気的に繋がったノード126をFD(フローティングディフュージョン)部と呼ぶ。
 転送トランジスタ122は、フォトダイオード121のカソード電極とFD部126との間に接続されている。転送トランジスタ122のゲート電極には、高レベル(例えば、Vddレベル)がアクティブ(以下、「Highアクティブ」と記述する)の転送パルスφTRFが転送線107-1を介して与えられる。これにより、転送トランジスタ122はオン状態となり、フォトダイオード121で光電変換された光電荷をFD部126に転送する。
 リセットトランジスタ123は、ドレイン電極が画素電源Vddに、ソース電極がFD部126にそれぞれ接続されている。リセットトランジスタ123のゲート電極には、HighアクティブのリセットパルスφRSTがリセット線107-2を介して与えられる。これにより、リセットトランジスタ123はオン状態となり、FD部126の電荷を画素電源Vddに捨てることによって当該FD部126をリセットする。
 増幅トランジスタ124は、ゲート電極がFD部126に、ドレイン電極が画素電源Vddにそれぞれ接続されている。そして、増幅トランジスタ124は、リセットトランジスタ123によってリセットした後のFD部126の電位をリセット信号(リセットレベル)として出力する。増幅トランジスタ124はさらに、転送トランジスタ122によって信号電荷を転送した後のFD部126の電位を光蓄積信号(信号レベル)として出力する。
 選択トランジスタ125は、例えば、ドレイン電極が増幅トランジスタ124のソース電極に、ソース電極が垂直信号線108にそれぞれ接続されている。選択トランジスタ125のゲート電極には、Highアクティブの選択パルスφSELが選択線107-3を介して与えられる。これにより、選択トランジスタ125はオン状態となり、画素120を選択状態として増幅トランジスタ124から出力される信号を垂直信号線108に中継する。
 なお、選択トランジスタ125については、画素電源Vddと増幅トランジスタ124のドレインとの間に接続した回路構成を採ることも可能である。
 また、画素120としては、上記構成の4つのトランジスタからなる画素構成のものに限られるものではない。例えば、増幅トランジスタ124と選択トランジスタ125とを兼用した3つのトランジスタからなる画素構成のものなどであっても良く、その画素回路の構成は問わない。
 [カラムADC]
 図5は、カラム処理部104のカラムADCの主な構成例を示すブロック図である。図5に示されるカラムADC140は、1垂直信号線分の構成例である。図5に示される構成のカラムADC140は、各垂直信号線に対して設けられる。
 上述したようにカラムADC140は、互いに異なる階調のA/D変換を行う複数のA/D変換部を有する。図5の例の場合、カラムADC140は、高階調なA/D変換を行うA/D変換部と、低階調なA/D変換を行うA/D変換部との2つのA/D変換部を有する。図5の例において、点線枠で囲まれるカラムADC140内の左の構成が、高階調なA/D変換を行うA/D変換部(高階調A/D変換部とも称する)であり、カラムADC140内の右の構成が、低階調なA/D変換を行うA/D変換部(低階調A/D変換部とも称する)である。
 つまり、高階調A/D変換部は、コンデンサ151および152、比較器153、スイッチ(ΦAZ)154、およびU/Dカウンタ155を有する。低階調A/D変換部は、コンデンサ161および162、比較器163、スイッチ(ΦAZ)164、およびU/Dカウンタ165を有する。なお、HSCAN105-1およびHSCAN105-2は、それぞれのA/D変換部に対する列走査部105の機能(列走査部105から供給される制御信号)を模式化したものであり、実際には、カラム処理部104内には存在しない。
 垂直信号線108を介して画素アレイ部102から供給される信号(垂直信号線出力)は、コンデンサ151を介して比較器153の一方の入力に供給される(VSLFi)。また、比較器153の他方の入力には、参照信号生成回路131から供給される参照信号、すなわち、傾きが緩やかなランプ波が、コンデンサ152を介して供給される(DACFi)。
 比較器153は、両入力を比較し、その比較結果(どちらが大きいか)を示す信号を出力する(VCOF)。スイッチ154は、適宜、比較器153の入力と出力とを接続することによりアナログCDSを行い、比較器153のオフセットを除去する。
 U/Dカウンタ155は、HSCAN105-1の制御に従い、比較器153による比較の開始とともに、所定のペースでのカウント(カウント値のインクリメント)を開始する。比較器153の出力が反転する(ランプ波の信号レベルが垂直信号線出力より小さくなる)か、若しくは、カウント値が飽和する(ランプ波の信号レベルが最小値に達する)と、U/Dカウンタ155は、カウントを終了し、それまでのカウント値を保持し、HSCAN105-1の制御に従い、適宜、水平バス109に出力する。
 このようにして高階調A/D変換部は、低照度領域の高階調なA/D変換を行う。
 また、垂直信号線出力は、コンデンサ161を介して比較器163の一方の入力に供給される(VSLCi)。また、比較器163の他方の入力には、参照信号生成回路132から供給される参照信号、すなわち、傾きが急なランプ波が、コンデンサ162を介して供給される(DACCi)。
 比較器163は、両入力を比較し、その比較結果(どちらが大きいか)を示す信号を出力する(VCOC)。スイッチ164は、適宜、比較器163の入力と出力とを接続することによりアナログCDSを行い、比較器163のオフセットを除去する。
 U/Dカウンタ165は、HSCAN105-2の制御に従い、比較器163による比較の開始とともに、所定のペースでのカウント(カウント値のインクリメント)を開始する。比較器163の出力が反転する(ランプ波の信号レベルが垂直信号線出力より小さくなる)か、若しくは、カウント値が飽和する(ランプ波の信号レベルが最小値に達する)と、U/Dカウンタ165は、カウントを終了し、それまでのカウント値を保持し、HSCAN105-2の制御に従い、適宜、水平バス109に出力する。
 このようにして低階調A/D変換部は、全領域の低階調なA/D変換を行う。
 ただし、図5に示されるように、カラムADC140は、サンプルホールド部170をさらに有する。サンプルホールド部170は、垂直信号線108とコンデンサ161との間に設けられる。サンプルホールド部170は、スイッチ(ΦS/H)171およびコンデンサ(CS/H)172を有する。スイッチ171は、垂直信号線108とコンデンサ161とを電気的に接続したり切断したりする。コンデンサ172は、垂直信号線出力を保持する。
 スイッチ171は、低階調A/D変換部がA/D変換を行う間、開放し、垂直信号線108とコンデンサ161とを電気的に切断する。比較器163では、回路構成上、入出力間に寄生容量が生じ易く、出力の反転が入力側に影響を及ぼし、入力信号の信号レベルが揺らぐ恐れがある(キックバックが発生する恐れがある)。
 この信号レベルの揺らぎが高階調A/D側に伝搬すると、比較器153において比較結果に誤差が生じる恐れがある。この誤差がノイズとなって出力されてしまう恐れがある。このような現象に対して、スイッチ171は、A/D変換中において垂直信号線108とコンデンサ161とを電気的に切断することにより、この揺らぎの伝搬を抑制することができる。すなわち、スイッチ171は、キックバックによるノイズの発生を抑制することができる。
 ただし、垂直信号線108とコンデンサ161とが電気的に切断されていると、垂直信号線出力が比較器163に入力されない。そこで、スイッチ171は、低階調A/D変換部によるA/D変換が行われていない間は、垂直信号線108とコンデンサ161とが電気的に接続する。このようにすることにより、垂直信号線出力の信号レベルがコンデンサ172に蓄積される。つまり、スイッチ171が切断された後は、低階調A/D変換部には、このコンデンサ172に蓄積された信号レベルが供給される。
 以上のように、サンプルホールド部170は、キックバックによる信号レベルの揺らぎの伝搬を抑制し、キックバックによるノイズの発生を抑制することができる。したがって、カラムADC140は、簡単な構成で、フレームレートを犠牲にせずに、キックバックによるノイズの発生を抑制しながら、部分的に高階調なA/D変換を行うことができる。したがって、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、より高画質な画像を得ることが出来る。
 なお、このようなサンプルホールド部170を付加するとkT/Cノイズ増加の懸念がある。ところで、高階調A/D変換部が低照度な領域のA/D変換を行うため、低階調A/D変換部のA/D変換結果は、実際には、高照度な領域についてのみ採用される。つまり、低階調出力・高照度側の信号は光ショットノイズがノイズの支配的要因となる。したがって、kT/Cノイズが増加しても、全体のノイズ量には大きな影響を及ぼさない。
 したがって、サンプルホールド部170を高階調A/D変換部の入力にではなく、低階調A/D変換部の入力に設けることにより、ノイズの増大を抑制することができる。
 なお、以上のような構成のカラムADC140は、画素の水平方向ピッチに収まるようにレイアウトしなければならないが、本技術の場合、上述したように簡易な構成のサンプルホールド部170を付加するのみにより、キックバックによるノイズの発生を抑制することができるので、より容易に、カラムADC140を実現することができる。
 [動作例]
 以下に具体的な動作例について説明する。最初に低照度側の出力が選択されるケース(画素値が小さい場合)について説明する。図6は、低照度側の出力が選択される場合の、画素信号のA/D変換の様子の例を示す図である。
 図6の最上段には、画素120から垂直信号線108を介してカラムADCに供給される信号(垂直信号線出力)の波形である垂直信号線画素信号201と、参照信号生成回路131が生成するランプ波の波形である低照度信号取得用参照電圧202とが示されている。また、図6の上から2段目には、サンプルホールド部170の出力信号の波形であるS/H回路画素信号204と、参照信号生成回路132が生成するランプ波の波形である高照度信号取得用参照電圧205とが示されている。
 なお、上述したように、S/H回路画素信号204は、垂直信号線画素信号201がコンデンサ172に保持されたものであるので、実質的に垂直信号線画素信号201と同様の波形となる。
 図6の下側には、U/Dカウンタ155によるカウントの様子を示す低照度信号取得用カウンタ203、U/Dカウンタ165によるカウントの様子を示す高照度信号取得用カウンタ206、および、スイッチ171のオン・オフ(接続・切断)を切り替える制御信号の波形であるφS/H207が示されている。
 なお、この例では、画素ごとの固定パターンノイズを除去するために、デジタルCDSが行われる。デジタルCDSにおいては、時刻T0乃至T3の区間においてFDのリセット電圧が画素の黒レベルとして先に読み出され、時刻T4乃至T7の区間においてその画素の画素信号(画素値)が読み出され、後に読み出された画素信号の信号レベルから、先に読み出された黒レベルが減算される。
 なお、デジタルCDSの動作は、任意であり、これ以外であってもよい。例えば、後段にフレームメモリを置き減算処理をさせても良いし、取得した黒レベルのカウント値を反転させて(ダウンカウント)、画素信号のA/D変換の初期値としてアップカウントさせても良い。
 図6に示されるように、FDのリセット電圧に対するA/D変換が開始されるT0の前において、φS/H207がオンになり、スイッチ171は接続状態(オン)となる。したがって、垂直信号線出力(FDのリセット電圧)がコンデンサ172に保持される。時刻T0になると、φS/H207がオフになり、スイッチ171は切断状態(オフ)となる。この状態で時刻T0からT3まで、FDのリセット電圧に対するA/D変換が行われる。したがって、比較器163のキックバックによる信号レベルの揺らぎの伝搬が抑制される。
 同様に、FDのリセット電圧に対するA/D変換が終了する時刻T3から、画素信号に対するA/D変換が開始される時刻T4までの間、φS/H207がオンになり、スイッチ171は接続状態(オン)となる。したがって、垂直信号線出力(画素信号レベル)がコンデンサ172に保持される。時刻T4になると、φS/H207がオフになり、スイッチ171は切断状態(オフ)となる。この状態で時刻T4からT7まで、画素信号に対するA/D変換が行われる。したがって、比較器163のキックバックによる信号レベルの揺らぎの伝搬が抑制される。
 図6に示されるように、時刻T5において、高照度信号取得用参照電圧205がS/H回路画素信号204より小さくなり比較器163の出力が反転する。したがって、高照度信号取得用カウンタ206の波形に示されるように、時刻T5において、U/Dカウンタ165によるカウントが終了し、そのカウント値が保持される。
 そして、時刻T6において、低照度信号取得用参照電圧202が垂直信号線画素信号201より小さくなり比較器153の出力が反転する。したがって、低照度信号取得用カウンタ203の波形に示されるように、時刻T6において、U/Dカウンタ155によるカウントが終了し、そのカウント値が保持される。
 これらの複数のデジタル出力値から、最もカウント値が大きく、かつ飽和していないものが1つ選択され、後段に出力される。高照度信号取得用参照電圧205のランプ波の方が傾きが急であるため、高照度信号取得用カウンタ206の方が先に終了する。そのため、低照度信号取得用カウンタ203のカウント値が飽和しない場合、低照度信号取得用カウンタ203のカウント値の方が大きい。
 つまり、低照度信号取得用カウンタ203のカウント値が飽和しない場合、U/Dカウンタ155のカウント値が出力として選択される。
 図7は、高照度側の出力が選択される場合の、画素信号のA/D変換の様子の例を示す図である。図7の構成は、基本的に図6と同様である。
 図7に記載の例の場合、時刻T8において、高照度信号取得用参照電圧205がS/H回路画素信号204より小さくなるものの、低照度信号取得用参照電圧202は、時刻T7までに垂直信号線画素信号201より小さくならない。つまり、低照度信号取得用カウンタ203のカウント値が飽和する。このような場合、U/Dカウンタ165のカウント値が出力として選択される。
 以上のようなことから、いずれの信号レベルが選択され出力されたかを示す必要がある。そこで、システム制御部106は、U/Dカウンタ155のカウント値(低照度信号取得用カウンタ203のカウント値)が飽和するか否かに従って、いずれの信号レベルが選択され出力されたかを示すフラグ情報を設定し、そのフラグ情報を、画素信号とともに出力させる。
 図8に、照度領域を2つに分けて2つのA/D変換器で取得した場合の、画素入力光量とセンサ出力の関係の例を示す。この例では、それぞれの最大カウント値を同じ値としているが、必ずしも同じである必要はない。
 階調の異なる照度領域による区分けの方法としては、量子化ノイズ、回路的なkT/Cノイズ、光ショットノイズなどを考慮して決定するのが現実的である。光ショットノイズは照度が高くなるほど大きくなる性質を持ったランダムノイズであり、ある照度においてkT/Cノイズよりも大きくなる。S/H回路の付加により増加したkT/Cノイズが、光ショットノイズと比較して無視できるように照度領域を区切り、高照度側の読み出しにS/H回路を付加するのが適切である。また、それぞれの照度領域で量子化ノイズが無視できるように、A/D変換の階調を決定するのが適切である。
 以上のように、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、フレームレート、画素数を犠牲にせずに、キックバックの影響を低減した良好な高階調な画像信号が取得できる。本技術は従来技術と比較して消費電力および面積を低減させることができ、コストを低減させることができる。
 カウント周波数を一定とすると、従来技術の場合、1ビット増やすごとに、画素アレイ1行当たりの垂直信号線数を2倍にして並列に処理するため、それぞれの比較器、カウンタ、信号線負荷が倍増していく。
 それに対して、本技術は、増加させるビット数に係わらずカウンタと比較器が2倍となり、参照電圧生成器が1+α倍(参照電圧生成器が2個の場合は1+α<2)となる。たとえば、フルスケールに対して4分の1の照度領域で2ビット高階調化した場合、電流値が0.25倍の回路ブロックが1つ増えるため、参照電圧生成器の消費電力は1.25倍である。したがって、消費電力・占有面積の両観点で従来技術と比較すると、要求される出力ビット数が増えるほど、本技術の効果が高くなる。
 [画像信号出力制御処理の流れ]
 次に、以上のようなCMOSイメージセンサ100により実行される処理について説明する。最初に、図9のフローチャートを参照して、画像信号出力制御処理の流れの例を説明する。画像信号出力制御処理は、例えば図6や図7を参照して説明したように画像信号を出力させるための制御処理である。
 画像信号出力制御処理が開始されると、システム制御部106は、ステップS101において、行走査部103および列走査部105等を制御し、未処理の画素を処理対象(注目画素)として選択する。
 ステップS102において、カラム処理部104は、システム制御部106の制御に従って、信号読み出し処理を実行し、注目画素のFDのリセット電圧を画素の黒レベルとして読み出し、A/D変換する。
 ステップS103において、カラム処理部104は、システム制御部106の制御に従って、信号読み出し処理を実行し、垂直信号線出力を画素信号レベルとして読み出し、A/D変換する。
 ステップS104において、カラム処理部104は、ステップS103において読み出された画素信号レベルから、ステップS102において読み出された黒レベルを減算し、デジタルCDSを行う。
 以上のように注目画素の画素値が読み出されると、システム制御部106は、ステップS105において、画素アレイ部102の全ての画素120の画素信号を処理したか否かを判定する。未処理の画素が存在する場合、システム制御部106は、処理をステップS101に戻し、それ以降の処理を繰り返す。
 また、以上のようにステップS101乃至ステップS105の処理を繰り返すことにより、ステップS105において全ての画素を処理したと判定した場合、システム制御部106は、画像信号出力制御処理を終了する。
 [信号読み出し処理の流れ]
 次に、図10のフローチャートを参照して、図9のステップS102またはステップS103において実行される信号読み出し処理の流れの例を説明する。
 図9のステップS102とステップS103においては、処理する信号が異なるのみの互いに同一の信号読み出し処理が実行される。以下においては、説明の便宜上、ステップS103において行われる画素信号に対する信号読み出し処理についてのみ説明する。
 なお、信号読み出し処理開始時、スイッチ171は、オン(接続状態)である。
 信号読み出し処理が開始されると、コンデンサ172は、ステップS121において、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)を記憶する。ステップS121終了後、画素信号のA/D変換が開始されるまでの間に、ステップS122において、スイッチ171は、切断状態(オフ)に移行し、垂直信号線108とコンデンサ161とを電気的に切断する。
 ステップS123において、U/Dカウンタ155およびU/Dカウンタ165は、高階調出力用カウントおよび低階調出力用カウントを開始する。ステップS124において、比較器163は、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値と、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)との比較を開始する。
 ステップS125において、比較器153は、高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値と、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)との比較を開始する。
 ステップS126において、比較器163は、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいか否かを判定し、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいと判定されるまでこの判定を繰り返す。ステップS126において、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいと判定された場合、比較器163は、処理をステップS127に進める。
 ステップS127において、U/Dカウンタ165は、低階調出力用カウントを終了する。また、ステップS128においいて、そのU/Dカウンタ165は、カウントを終了した時点のカウント値である低階調出力用カウント値を記憶する。
 ステップS129において、比較器153は、高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいか否かを判定する。なお、実際には、この処理は、ステップS126等の低階調側の処理と並行して行われるが、この場合、低階調側が必ず先に反転するので、低階調側が反転した後のステップS129の処理として説明する。高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいと判定された場合、比較器153は、処理をステップS130に進める。
 ステップS130において、U/Dカウンタ155は、高階調出力用カウントを終了する。ステップS131において、U/Dカウンタ155は、低照度側を示すフラグ情報を出力する。ステップS132において、U/Dカウンタ155は、高階調出力用カウント値を選択して出力する。ステップS132の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ155は、信号読み出し処理を終了し、処理を図9に戻す。
 また、ステップS129において、比較器153は、高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さくないと判定された場合、処理をステップS133に進める。
 ステップS133において、比較器153は、高階調出力用カウント値が飽和したか否かを判定し、飽和していないと判定された場合、処理をステップS129に戻し、それ以降の処理を繰り返す。
 また、ステップS133において、垂直信号線出力に対するA/D変換が終了した(時刻T7に達した)と判定され、高階調出力用カウント値が飽和したと判定した場合、比較器153は、処理をステップS134に進める。
 ステップS134において、U/Dカウンタ155は、高階調出力用カウントを終了する。ステップS135において、U/Dカウンタ155は、高照度側を示すフラグ情報を出力する。ステップS136において、U/Dカウンタ165は、ステップS128において記憶された低階調出力用カウント値を選択して出力する。ステップS136の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ165は、信号読み出し処理を終了し、処理を図9に戻す。
 以上のように各処理を実行することにより、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、フレームレートを犠牲にせずに高階調のより高画質な画像を出力することができる。
 [A/D変換開始時刻制御1]
 以上においては、最も高階調のA/D変換処理と、それ以外の階調のA/D変換処理とを互いに同時刻に開始するように説明したが、これに限らず、互いに異なる時刻に開始するようにしてもよい。
 複数あるランプ波の開始時間をずらして駆動することにより、よりキックバック低減の効果を高めることができる。
 例えば、図11に示されるように、傾斜の最も緩やかなランプ波を先に開始させ、先に高階調信号取得用の比較器153を反転させるようにしてもよい。このようにするためには、まず、傾斜の最も緩やかなランプ波を先に開始させ(時刻T10)、その後、傾斜の最も緩やかなランプ波と、傾斜の急なランプ波の電圧値が交差しないタイミング(時刻T11)で、傾斜の急なランプ波を開始させればよい。そして、そのタイミングに合わせてU/Dカウンタ155やU/Dカウンタ165によるカウントを開始・終了させればよい。
 この場合、図11に示されるように、信号が低照度側にある場合は必ず高階調信号取得用の比較器153が先に出力を反転させる(時刻T12)。つまり、低照度信号取得用参照電圧252の方が、高照度信号取得用参照電圧253よりも先に、垂直信号線(S/H回路)画素信号251より小さくなる。
 この比較器153の反転により発生するキックバックが、サンプルホールド部170を介して低階調取得用の比較器163の入力端を揺らして大きなノイズが乗る可能性もある。しかしながら、この場合、低階調信号は選択されないため、U/Dカウンタ165のカウント値にいくらノイズが乗っても問題ない。
 逆に、低階調信号が選択される場合、つまり、注目画素の画素値が高照度領域に存在する場合、高階調信号は飽和する(比較器153の出力は反転しない)ので、キックバックは発生しない。
 したがって、この場合、カラムADC140は、キックバックによる信号レベルの揺らぎの伝搬をさらに抑制することができる。つまり、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、さらに高画質な画像を出力することができる。
 なお、高階調信号取得用の比較器155が出力を反転させた時点で、U/Dカウンタ165による低階調信号取得用のカウント動作を停止させるようにしてもよい。このようにすることにより、カラムADC140は、不要な処理の実行を低減させ、消費電力を低減させることができる。
 [信号読み出し処理の流れ]
 この場合も、画像信号出力制御処理は、図9のフローチャートを参照して説明した場合と同様に実行される。ただし、信号読み出し処理は、図12のフローチャートのように実行される。図12のフローチャートを参照して、その信号読み出し処理の流れの例を説明する。なお、ステップS102の処理とステップS103の処理は互いに同様に実行されるので、以下においては、図10の場合と同様に、ステップS103の画素信号レベルのA/D変換についてのみ説明する。
 ステップS201およびステップS202の各処理は、ステップS121およびステップS122の各処理と同様に実行される。
 ステップS203において、U/Dカウンタ155は、高階調出力用カウントを開始する。ステップS204において、比較器153は、高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値と、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)との比較を開始する。
 ステップS205において、U/Dカウンタ165は、所定時間待機する。その後、U/Dカウンタ165は、ステップS206において、低階調出力用カウントを開始する。ステップS207において、比較器163は、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値と、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)との比較を開始する。
 ステップS208乃至ステップS214の各処理は、ステップS129乃至ステップS135の各処理と同様に実行される。
 ステップS215において、比較器163は、ステップS126の場合と同様に、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が、垂直信号線出力(サンプルホールド部170の出力)より小さいか否かを判定する。なお、実際には、この処理は、ステップS208等の高階調側の処理と並行して行われるが、この場合、高階調側が必ず先に反転する(若しくは飽和する)ので、高階調側が飽和した後のステップS215の処理として説明する。
 ステップS215において、比較器163は、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいと判定されるまでこの判定を繰り返し、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいと判定された場合、処理をステップS216に進める。
 ステップS216において、U/Dカウンタ165は、低階調出力用カウントを終了する。また、ステップS217において、そのU/Dカウンタ165は、カウントを終了した時点のカウント値である低階調出力用カウント値を選択して出力する。
 ステップS217の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ165は、信号読み出し処理を終了し、処理を図9に戻す。
 以上のようにすることにより、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、さらに高画質な画像を出力することができる。
 [A/D変換開始時刻制御2]
 また、逆に、例えば、図13に示されるように、傾斜の急なランプ波を先に開始させ、所定時間経過後に、最も傾斜の緩やかなランプ波を開始させるようにしてもよい。
 つまり、まず、傾斜が急なランプ波を先に開始させ(時刻T20)、所定時間経過後(時刻T21)、傾斜の最も緩やかなランプ波を開始させればよい。そして、そのタイミングに合わせてU/Dカウンタ155やU/Dカウンタ165によるカウントを開始・終了させればよい。
 この場合、図13に示されるように、それぞれのランプ波の電圧値が、図6や図7を参照して説明した場合と比べて、所定時間待機した分だけ離れる。したがって、図13に示されるように、低階調側のキックバックにより垂直信号線出力の信号レベルに揺らぎが発生しても(時刻T22)その揺らぎが高階調側の反転を誘発する可能性が低くなる。このように、キックバックによる反転が生じなければ、高階調側においても正確なカウント値(時刻T23)を得ることができる。
 つまり、この場合も、カラムADC140は、キックバックによる信号レベルの揺らぎの伝搬をさらに抑制することができる。つまり、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、さらに高画質な画像を出力することができる。
 [信号読み出し処理の流れ]
 この場合も、画像信号出力制御処理は、図9のフローチャートを参照して説明した場合と同様に実行される。ただし、信号読み出し処理は、図14のフローチャートのように実行される。図14のフローチャートを参照して、その信号読み出し処理の流れの例を説明する。なお、ステップS102の処理とステップS103の処理は互いに同様に実行されるので、以下においては、図10の場合と同様に、ステップS103の画素信号レベルのA/D変換についてのみ説明する。
 ステップS231およびステップS232の各処理は、ステップS121およびステップS122の各処理と同様に実行される。
 ステップS233において、U/Dカウンタ165は、低階調出力用カウントを開始する。ステップS234において、比較器163は、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値と、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)との比較を開始する。
 ステップS235において、U/Dカウンタ155は、所定時間待機する。その後、U/Dカウンタ155は、ステップS236において、高階調出力用カウントを開始する。ステップS237において、比較器153は、高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値と、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)との比較を開始する。
 ステップS238乃至ステップS248の各処理は、ステップS129乃至ステップS136の各処理と同様に実行される。
 以上のようにすることにより、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、さらに高画質な画像を出力することができる。
 [A/D変換開始時刻制御3]
 なお、上述したように、最も高階調のA/D変換処理、および、それ以外の階調のA/D変換処理を、互いに異なる時刻に開始するようにするだけでも、キックバックの影響の伝搬を抑制することができる。したがって、この場合、サンプルホールド部170を省略し、その入出力を常時短絡させる(低階調側のA/D変換部の構成であるコンデンサ161を常時垂直信号線108に接続する)ようにしてもよい。このようにすることにより、カラムADC140の構成をより簡易化することができる。
 これは、最も傾斜が緩やかランプ波を先に開始させ、所定時間経過後に、傾斜が急なランプ波を開始させる場合(図11)と、傾斜が急なランプ波を先に開始させ、所定時間経過後に、最も傾斜が緩やかなランプ波を開始させる場合(図13)との、どちらの場合にも適用することができる。
 なお、信号読み出し処理は、図12の場合、ステップS201およびステップS202の各処理を省略すればよく、図14の場合、ステップS231およびステップS232の各処理を省略すればよい。つまり、この場合、信号読み出し処理も容易化することができる。
 [3領域分割]
 以上においては、垂直信号線出力の信号レベル(画素値)が取り得る値の範囲を低照度領域と高照度領域の2つに分割したが、分割後の領域数は任意であり、3領域以上に分割してもよい。
 その場合、3領域以上に分けて読み出しを行う場合、最も読み出し期間の長い領域の信号読み出し中に、その他の複数の照度領域の信号を読み出すようにすればよい。
 以下に、高照度領域、中照度領域、および低照度領域の3領域に分割する場合を例に、より具体的に説明する。4領域以上に分割する場合も基本的にこの場合と同様にすればよい。
 図15は、画素値が中照度領域に位置する場合の、A/D変換の様子の例を示す図である。
 図15に示されるように、この場合、読み出し時間が最も長い低照度領域の信号の読み出し(高階調のA/D変換)と並行して、中照度領域の読み出し(中階調のA/D変換)を行い、さらに高照度領域の読み出し(低階調のA/D変換)を行う。
 つまり、まず、参照信号生成回路131が、傾きが最も緩やかな高階調用のランプ波の生成を開始するのと同時に、参照信号生成回路132が、傾きが2番目に緩やかな中階調用のランプ波の生成を開始する。そして、参照信号生成回路131が高階調用のランプ波を生成している間に、参照信号生成回路132が中階調用のランプ波と、傾きが最も急な低階調用のランプ波とを順次生成するようにする。
 図15の例のように、画素値が中照度領域にある場合、比較器163は、中照度信号取得用参照電圧303が垂直信号線(S/H回路)画素信号301より小さくなる時刻T31において出力を反転させる。この場合、低照度信号取得用カウンタ305の値は飽和する(低照度信号取得用参照電圧302は、垂直信号線(S/H回路)画素信号301より小さくならない)。
 このように、高階調のA/D変換において飽和し、中階調のA/D変換において飽和しない場合、中・高照度信号取得用カウンタ306のカウント値が中階調のA/D変換結果として選択され、出力される。
 図16は、画素値が高照度領域に位置する場合の、A/D変換の様子の例を示す図である。
 図16の例のように、画素値が高照度領域にある場合、中照度信号取得用参照電圧303は、垂直信号線(S/H回路)画素信号301より小さくならず、時刻T41において、中階調のA/D変換は飽和する。その後時刻T42において、傾きが最も急な低階調用のランプ波の生成が開始される。比較器163は、高照度信号取得用参照電圧304が垂直信号線(S/H回路)画素信号301より小さくなる時刻T43において出力を反転させる。この場合も、低照度信号取得用カウンタ305の値は飽和する(低照度信号取得用参照電圧302は、画素信号301より小さくならない)。
 このように、高階調および中階調のA/D変換において飽和し、低階調のA/D変換において飽和しない場合、中・高照度信号取得用カウンタ306のカウント値が低階調のA/D変換結果として選択され、出力される。
 なお、図示は省略するが、高階調のA/D変換において飽和しない場合、低照度信号取得用カウンタ305のカウント値が高階調のA/D変換結果として選択され、出力される。
 なお、選択され、出力されるカウント値が、どの階調のA/D変換結果であるかを示すフラグ情報も、そのカウント値とともに出力される。このフラグ情報の値は、各階調のA/D変換が飽和するか否か、すなわち、比較器153および比較器163の出力が反転するか否かに基づいて、容易に設定することができる。
 つまり、例えば、比較器153の出力が反転する場合、フラグ情報は、選択されたカウント値が高階調のA/D変換結果であることを示す値に設定される。また、例えば、比較器153の出力が反転せず、かつ、比較器163の出力が、時刻T40乃至時刻T41の間に反転する場合、フラグ情報は、選択されたカウント値が中階調のA/D変換結果であることを示す値に設定される。さらに、例えば、比較器153の出力が反転せず、かつ、比較器163の出力が、時刻T42乃至時刻T43の間に反転する場合、フラグ情報は、選択されたカウント値が低階調のA/D変換結果であることを示す値に設定される。
 なお、図15に示される例の場合、低階調のA/D変換は不要になる。したがって、時刻T31より後において、U/Dカウンタ165は停止させたままにしてもよい。このように、後の高照度領域(低階調信号)のランプ波が開始されてもカウンタは動作させないでおくと消費電力を低減させることができる。
 図17に、本例で取得できる、画素入力光量とセンサ出力の関係の例を示す。この場合、低照度領域で取得する最大のカウント値は、中照度領域および高照度領域の最大カウント値を加算したものよりも大きくなる。
 以上のように、垂直信号線1本当たりのA/D変換器の数と、階調の異なる照度領域の区分け数は、互いに同一でなくても良い。本実施例の動作により、カラムADC140は、消費電力や面積を低減させることができる。
 [信号読み出し処理の流れ]
 この場合も、画像信号出力制御処理は、図9のフローチャートを参照して説明した場合と同様に実行される。ただし、信号読み出し処理は、図18のフローチャートのように実行される。図18のフローチャートを参照して、その信号読み出し処理の流れの例を説明する。なお、ステップS102の処理とステップS103の処理は互いに同様に実行されるので、以下においては、図10の場合と同様に、ステップS103の画素信号レベルのA/D変換についてのみ説明する。
 ステップS301およびステップS302の各処理は、ステップS121およびステップS122の各処理と同様に実行される。
 ステップS303において、カラムADC140の高階調側のA/D変換部は、高階調信号読み出し処理を行い、高階調のA/D変換を行う。この処理と並行して、ステップS304において、カラムADC140の中低階調側(高階調側でない方)のA/D変換部は、中低階調信号読み出し処理を行い、中階調および低階調のA/D変換を行う。
 ステップS303およびステップS304の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ155およびU/Dカウンタ165は、ステップS305において、ステップS303およびステップS304の処理により設定されたフラグ情報の値に基づいて、カウント値を選択し、フラグ情報とともに出力する。
 ステップS305の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ155およびU/Dカウンタ165は、信号読み出し処理を終了し、処理を図9に戻す。
 [高階調信号読み出し処理の流れ]
 次に、図19のフローチャートを参照して、図18のステップS303において実行される高階調信号読み出し処理の流れの例を説明する。
 高階調信号読み出し処理が開始されると、コンデンサ172は、ステップS321において、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)を記憶する。ステップS321終了後、画素信号のA/D変換が開始されるまでの間に、ステップS322において、スイッチ171は、切断状態(オフ)に移行し、垂直信号線108とコンデンサ161とを電気的に切断する。
 ステップS323において、U/Dカウンタ155は、高階調出力用カウントを開始する。ステップS324において、比較器153は、高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値と、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)との比較を開始する。
 ステップS325において、比較器153は、高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいか否かを判定する。高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいと判定された場合、比較器153は、処理をステップS326に進める。
 ステップS326において、U/Dカウンタ155は、高階調出力用カウントを終了する。ステップS327において、U/Dカウンタ155は、低照度側を示すフラグ情報を設定し、記憶する。ステップS328において、U/Dカウンタ155は、ステップS326においてカウントを終了した時点の高階調出力用カウント値を記憶する。ステップS328の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ155は、高階調信号読み出し処理を終了し、処理を図18に戻す。
 また、ステップS325において、比較器153は、高階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さくないと判定された場合、処理をステップS329に進める。
 ステップS329において、比較器153は、高階調出力用カウント値が飽和したか否かを判定し、飽和していないと判定された場合、処理をステップS325に戻し、それ以降の処理を繰り返す。
 また、ステップS329において、高階調出力用カウント値が飽和したと判定した場合、比較器153は、処理をステップS330に進める。
 ステップS330において、U/Dカウンタ155は、高階調出力用カウントを終了する。ステップS331において、U/Dカウンタ155は、中高照度側を示すフラグ情報を設定し、記憶する。ステップS331の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ155は、高階調信号読み出し処理を終了し、処理を図18に戻す。
 [中低階調信号読み出し処理の流れ]
 次に、図20のフローチャートを参照して、図18のステップS304において実行される中低階調信号読み出し処理の流れの例を説明する。
 中低階調信号読み出し処理が開始されると、コンデンサ172は、ステップS351において、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)を記憶する。ステップS351終了後、画素信号のA/D変換が開始されるまでの間に、ステップS352において、スイッチ171は、切断状態(オフ)に移行し、垂直信号線108とコンデンサ161とを電気的に切断する。
 ステップS353において、U/Dカウンタ165は、中階調出力用カウントを開始する。ステップS354において、比較器163は、中階調出力用ランプ波の信号値と、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)との比較を開始する。
 ステップS355において、比較器163は、中階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいか否かを判定する。中階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいと判定された場合、比較器163は、処理をステップS356に進める。
 ステップS356において、U/Dカウンタ165は、中階調出力用カウントを終了する。ステップS357において、U/Dカウンタ165は、中照度側を示すフラグ情報を設定し、記憶する。ステップS358において、U/Dカウンタ165は、ステップS356においてカウントを終了した時点の中階調出力用カウント値を記憶する。ステップS358の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ165は、中低階調信号読み出し処理を終了し、処理を図18に戻す。
 また、ステップS355において、比較器163は、中階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さくないと判定された場合、処理をステップS359に進める。
 ステップS359において、比較器163は、中階調出力用カウント値が飽和したか否かを判定し、飽和していないと判定された場合、処理をステップS355に戻し、それ以降の処理を繰り返す。
 また、ステップS359において、中階調出力用カウント値が飽和したと判定した場合、比較器163は、処理をステップS360に進める。
 ステップS360において、U/Dカウンタ165は、中階調出力用カウントを終了する。ステップS361において、U/Dカウンタ165は、高照度側を示すフラグ情報を設定し、記憶する。
 ステップS361の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ165は、ステップS362において、低階調出力用カウントを開始する。ステップS363において、比較器163は、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値と、垂直信号線出力(注目画素の画素信号レベル)との比較を開始する。
 ステップS364において、比較器163は、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいか否かを判定する。低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さいと判定された場合、比較器163は、処理をステップS366に進める。
 また、ステップS364において、低階調出力用ランプ波の信号値が垂直信号線出力より小さくないと判定された場合、比較器163は、処理をステップS365に進める。
 ステップS365において、比較器163は、低階調出力用カウント値が飽和したか否かを判定し、飽和していないと判定された場合、処理をステップS364に戻し、それ以降の処理を繰り返す。
 また、ステップS365において、低階調出力用カウント値が飽和したと判定した場合、比較器163は、処理をステップS366に進める。
 ステップS366において、U/Dカウンタ165は、低階調出力用カウントを終了する。ステップS367において、U/Dカウンタ165は、ステップS366においてカウントを終了した時点の低階調出力用カウント値を記憶する。ステップS367の処理が終了すると、U/Dカウンタ165は、中低階調信号読み出し処理を終了し、処理を図18に戻す。
 以上のように各処理を実行することにより、CMOSイメージセンサ100は、カラムADC140の、消費電力や面積を低減させることができる。
 [A/D変換部並列構成]
 以上においては、1垂直信号線に対するカラムADC140として、互いに異なる階調のA/D変換を行う複数のA/D変換部を設けるように説明したが、各階調のA/D変換部は、1つずつであるように説明した。しかしながら、各階調のA/D変換部の数は任意である。例えば、互いに同一の参照信号(同じ傾きのランプ波)を用いてA/D変換を行う複数のA/D変換部を設けるようにしてもよい。
 図21は、その場合のカラムADCの主な構成例を示すブロック図である。
 図21に示されるカラムADC440は、図5を参照して説明したカラムADC140と基本的に同様の処理部である。ただし、カラムADC440は、図21に示されるように、高階調用のA/D変換部として、並列に動作する2つのA/D変換部(図中、左の2列)を有し、低階調用のA/D変換部として、並列に動作する2つのA/D変換部(図中、右の2列)を有する。
 つまり、カラムADC440内の左の2列のA/D変換部は、参照信号生成回路131が生成する高階調なA/D変換用の参照信号(傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波)を用いてA/D変換を行う。また、カラムADC440内の右の2列のA/D変換部は、参照信号生成回路132が生成する低階調なA/D変換用の参照信号(傾きが急なランプ波)を用いてA/D変換を行う。
 このように複数のA/D変換部を並列に動作させ、互いに同じ階調の信号を複数取得し、後段の信号処理(例えば、図21の加算平均算出部491)で加算平均し、1つのデジタルデータを得るようにする。このようにすることにより、ランダムノイズを抑制し、精度の良い画像信号を取得することができる。
 例えば2つのA/D変換部を用いて上述したように2つの信号を生成し、加算平均を取ると、ランダムノイズを1/√2倍にすることができ、S/N比を3dB改善することができる。
 なお、並列動作させるA/D変換部の数は、任意であり、3つ以上であってもよい。また、その数は、階調毎に独立して設定される。したがって、各階調のA/D変換部の数は、全て互いに同一であってもよいし、同一でなくてもよい。
 なお、本技術を適用した撮像素子(撮像装置)は、上述した構成に限らず、他の構成であってもよい。
 例えば、カラムADCの参照信号生成回路は、互いに傾きが異なるランプ波形の参照信号を生成するものが複数設けられればよく、その数は3つ以上であってもよい。カラムADCには、1垂直信号線に対して、それぞれの参照信号に基づいてA/D変換を行うA/D変換部が少なくとも1つずつ設けられる。すなわち、カラムADCにおいては、1垂直信号線に対して、参照信号生成回路の数と同数の種類の階調のA/D変換が実行される。この場合、各階調のA/D変換を並列に実行することができる。
 なお、サンプルホールド部170は、階調毎に設けるようにしてもよいし、図5の場合と同様に、最も高階調なA/D変換を行うA/D変換部以外のA/D変換部と垂直信号線108との間にのみ設けるようにしてもよい。
 また、参照信号生成回路は、生成された参照信号が、上述したようにカラムADC内の各A/D変換部に供給される限り、カラムADCの外部に設けられるようにしても良いし、CMOSイメージセンサ100の外部に設けられるようにしても良い。
 <2.第2の実施の形態>
 [撮像装置]
 図22は、本技術を適用した撮像装置の主な構成例を示す図である。図22に示される撮像装置500は、被写体を撮像し、その被写体の画像を電気信号として出力する装置である。図22に示されるように、撮像装置500は、レンズ群501等を含む光学系、撮像素子502、カメラ信号処理部であるDSP(Digital Signal Processor)503、フレームメモリ504、表示装置505、記録装置506、操作系507、および電源系508等を有する。そして、DSP503、フレームメモリ504、表示装置505、記録装置506、操作系507、および電源系508がバスライン509を介して相互に接続されている。
 レンズ群501は、被写体からの入射光(像光)を取り込んで撮像素子502の撮像面上に結像する。撮像素子502は、レンズ群501によって撮像面上に結像された入射光の光量を画素単位で電気信号に変換して画素信号として出力する。この撮像素子502として、上述した実施形態に係るCMOSイメージセンサ100等の固体撮像装置を用いることができる。DSP503は、周知のカメラ信号処理を行う。
 表示装置505は、液晶表示装置や有機EL(electro luminescence)表示装置等よりなり、撮像素子502で撮像された動画または静止画を表示する。記録装置506は、撮像素子502で撮像された動画または静止画を、ビデオテープやDVD(Digital Versatile Disc)等の記録媒体に記録する。
 操作系507は、ユーザによる操作の下に、本撮像装置が持つ様々な機能について操作指令を発する。電源系508は、DSP503、フレームメモリ504、表示装置505、記録装置506、および操作系507の動作電源となる各種の電源を、これら供給対象に対して適宜供給する。
 このような撮像装置500は、ビデオカメラやデジタルスチルカメラ、さらには携帯電話機等のモバイル機器向けのカメラモジュールに適用される。撮像素子502として上述したCMOSイメージセンサ100を用いることにより、撮像装置500は、キックバックによるノイズの発生を低減させることができ、より高画質な撮像画像を得ることができる。
 なお、本技術を適用した撮像素子や画像処理部を備える撮像装置は、上述した構成に限らず、他の構成であってもよい。
 <3.第3の実施の形態>
 [コンピュータ]
 上述した一連の処理は、ハードウエアにより実行することもできるし、ソフトウエアにより実行することもできる。一連の処理をソフトウエアにより実行する場合には、そのソフトウエアを構成するプログラムが、コンピュータにインストールされる。ここで、コンピュータには、例えば、図3のシステム制御部106のような、専用のハードウエアに組み込まれているコンピュータや、各種のプログラムをインストールすることで各種の機能を実行することが可能な汎用のコンピュータなどが含まれる。
 図23は、そのような汎用のコンピュータの主な構成例を示す図である。図23において、汎用のコンピュータ600のCPU(Central Processing Unit)601は、ROM(Read Only Memory)602に記憶されているプログラム、または記憶部613からRAM(Random Access Memory)603にロードされたプログラムに従って各種の処理を実行する。RAM603にはまた、CPU601が各種の処理を実行する上において必要なデータなども適宜記憶される。
 CPU601、ROM602、およびRAM603は、バス604を介して相互に接続されている。このバス604にはまた、入出力インタフェース610も接続されている。
 入出力インタフェース610には、キーボード、マウスなどよりなる入力部611、CRT(Cathode Ray Tube)やLCD(Liquid Crystal Display)などよりなるディスプレイ、並びにスピーカなどよりなる出力部612、ハードディスクなどより構成される記憶部613、モデムなどより構成される通信部614が接続されている。通信部614は、インターネットを含むネットワークを介しての通信処理を行う。
 入出力インタフェース610にはまた、必要に応じてドライブ615が接続され、磁気ディスク、光ディスク、光磁気ディスク、或いは半導体メモリなどのリムーバブルメディア621が適宜装着され、それらから読み出されたコンピュータプログラムが、必要に応じて記憶部613にインストールされる。
 上述した一連の処理をソフトウエアにより実行させる場合には、そのソフトウエアを構成するプログラムが、ネットワークや記録媒体からインストールされる。
 この記録媒体は、例えば、図23に示されるように、装置本体とは別に、ユーザにプログラムを配信するために配布される、プログラムが記録されている磁気ディスク(フレキシブルディスクを含む)、光ディスク(CD-ROM(Compact Disc - Read Only Memory),DVD(Digital Versatile Disc)を含む)、光磁気ディスク(MD(Mini Disc)を含む)、若しくは半導体メモリなどよりなるリムーバブルメディア621により構成されるだけでなく、装置本体に予め組み込まれた状態でユーザに配信される、プログラムが記録されているROM602や、記憶部613に含まれるハードディスクなどで構成される。
 なお、コンピュータが実行するプログラムは、本明細書で説明する順序に沿って時系列に処理が行われるプログラムであっても良いし、並列に、あるいは呼び出しが行われたとき等の必要なタイミングで処理が行われるプログラムであっても良い。
 また、本明細書において、記録媒体に記録されるプログラムを記述するステップは、記載された順序に沿って時系列的に行われる処理はもちろん、必ずしも時系列的に処理されなくとも、並列的あるいは個別に実行される処理をも含むものである。
 また、本明細書において、システムとは、複数のデバイス(装置)により構成される装置全体を表すものである。
 また、以上において、1つの装置(または処理部)として説明した構成を分割し、複数の装置(または処理部)として構成するようにしてもよい。逆に、以上において複数の装置(または処理部)として説明した構成をまとめて1つの装置(または処理部)として構成されるようにしてもよい。また、各装置(または各処理部)の構成に上述した以外の構成を付加するようにしてももちろんよい。さらに、システム全体としての構成や動作が実質的に同じであれば、ある装置(または処理部)の構成の一部を他の装置(または他の処理部)の構成に含めるようにしてもよい。つまり、本技術は、上述した実施の形態に限定されるものではなく、本技術の要旨を逸脱しない範囲において種々の変更が可能である。
 なお、本技術は以下のような構成も取ることができる。
 (1) 光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、
 互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタと、
 前記アナログ信号と傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波以外のランプ波の参照信号との比較を行う前記比較部が前記比較を開始する前に、前記垂直信号線を介して供給される前記アナログ信号を保持し、前記比較部が前記比較を行う間、前記垂直信号線と前記比較部との間を電気的に切断するとともに、保持している前記アナログ信号を前記比較部に供給するサンプルホールド部と
 を備える撮像素子。
 (2) 傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の電圧範囲は、kT/Cノイズが全てのノイズで最も支配的である範囲で動作する
 前記(1)に記載の撮像素子。

 (7) 傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を生成する複数の参照信号生成部をさらに備え、
 複数の前記比較部は、前記アナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部により生成された参照信号と比較する
 前記(1)乃至(6)のいずれかに記載の撮像素子。
 (8) 複数の前記参照信号生成部は、互いに同一のタイミングで前記参照信号の生成を開始する
 前記(7)に記載の撮像素子。

 傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成した後、前記ランプ波とその他の傾きのランプ波とが電圧的に交差しないタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始する
 前記(7)に記載の撮像素子。
 (10) 傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成する前のタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始する
 前記(7)に記載の撮像素子。
 (11) 傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成する間に、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、互いに傾きが異なるランプ波の参照信号を順次生成する
 前記(7)に記載の撮像素子。
 (12) 複数の前記比較部の一部または全部が、前記アナログ信号を、傾きが互いに同一のランプ波の参照信号と比較し、
 前記アナログ信号を、傾きが互いに同一のランプ波の参照信号と比較する複数の比較部のそれぞれに対応するカウンタが出力するカウント値を加算平均する加算平均部をさらに備える
 前記(1)乃至(11)のいずれかに記載の撮像素子。
 (13) 撮像素子の制御方法であって、
 複数の比較部が、光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力し、
 複数のカウンタが、互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力し、
 サンプルホールド部が、前記アナログ信号と傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波以外のランプ波の参照信号との比較を行う前記比較部が前記比較を開始する前に、前記垂直信号線を介して供給される前記アナログ信号を保持し、前記比較部が前記比較を行う間、前記垂直信号線と前記比較部との間を電気的に切断するとともに、保持している前記アナログ信号を前記比較部に供給する
 制御方法。
 (14)  光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、
  互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタと、
  前記アナログ信号と傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波以外のランプ波の参照信号との比較を行う前記比較部が前記比較を開始する前に、前記垂直信号線を介して供給される前記アナログ信号を保持し、前記比較部が前記比較を行う間、前記垂直信号線と前記比較部との間を電気的に切断するとともに、保持している前記アナログ信号を前記比較部に供給するサンプルホールド部と
 を有する撮像素子と、
 前記撮像素子より出力される撮像画像のデジタルデータを画像処理する画像処理部と、
 前記画像処理部により画像処理された前記撮像画像のデジタルデータを記憶する記憶部と
 を備える撮像装置。
 (15) 傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を、互いに異なるタイミングで生成する複数の参照信号生成部と、
 光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部が生成した前記参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、
 互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタと
 を備える撮像素子。
 (16) 傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成した後、前記ランプ波とその他の傾きのランプ波とが電圧的に交差しないタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始する
 前記(15)に記載の撮像素子。
 (17) 傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成する前のタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始する
 前記(15)に記載の撮像素子。
 (18)
 選択されたカウンタが対応する比較器が利用する参照信号の電圧範囲を示すフラグ情報が、前記カウント値とともに出力される
 前記(15)に記載の撮像素子。
 (19) 撮像素子の制御方法であって、
 複数の参照信号生成部が、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を、互いに異なるタイミングで生成し、
 複数の比較部が、光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部が生成した前記参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力し、
 複数のカウンタが、互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する
 制御方法。
 (20)  傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を、互いに異なるタイミングで生成する複数の参照信号生成部と、
  光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部が生成した前記参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、
  互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタと
 を有する撮像素子と、
 前記撮像素子より出力される撮像画像のデジタルデータを画像処理する画像処理部と、
 前記画像処理部により画像処理された前記撮像画像のデジタルデータを記憶する記憶部と
 を備える撮像装置。

Claims (20)

  1.  光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、
     互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタと、
     前記アナログ信号と傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波以外のランプ波の参照信号との比較を行う前記比較部が前記比較を開始する前に、前記垂直信号線を介して供給される前記アナログ信号を保持し、前記比較部が前記比較を行う間、前記垂直信号線と前記比較部との間を電気的に切断するとともに、保持している前記アナログ信号を前記比較部に供給するサンプルホールド部と
     を備える撮像素子。
  2.  傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の電圧範囲は、kT/Cノイズが全てのノイズで最も支配的である範囲で動作する
     請求項1に記載の撮像素子。
  3.   複数の前記カウンタの中から各比較部の比較結果に基づいて選択された、前記アナログ信号を前記アナログ信号の信号レベルに応じた照度領域に対応する参照信号と比較する比較部についてのカウントを行うカウンタが、前記カウント値を出力する
     請求項2に記載の撮像素子。
  4.  複数の前記カウンタの内、カウント値が最も大きく、かつ、自身が対応する前記比較部の前記比較結果が反転しているカウンタが選択される
     請求項3に記載の撮像素子。
  5.  選択されたカウンタが対応する比較器が利用する参照信号の電圧範囲を示すフラグ情報が、前記カウント値とともに出力される
     請求項4に記載の撮像素子。
  6.  前記サンプルホールド部は、
      前記垂直信号線と前記比較部との間を電気的に接続したり切断したりするスイッチと、
      前記スイッチにより前記垂直信号線と前記比較部との間を電気的に接続されている間に、前記垂直信号線を介して供給される前記アナログ信号を保持し、前記垂直信号線と前記比較部との間を電気的に切断されている間に、自身が保持している前記アナログ信号を前記比較部に供給するコンデンサと
     を備える請求項1に記載の撮像素子。
  7.  傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を生成する複数の参照信号生成部をさらに備え、
     複数の前記比較部は、前記アナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部により生成された参照信号と比較する
     請求項1に記載の撮像素子。
  8.  複数の前記参照信号生成部は、互いに同一のタイミングで前記参照信号の生成を開始する
     請求項7に記載の撮像素子。
  9.  傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成した後、前記ランプ波とその他の傾きのランプ波とが電圧的に交差しないタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始する
     請求項7に記載の撮像素子。
  10.  傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成する前のタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始する
     請求項7に記載の撮像素子。
  11.  傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成する間に、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、互いに傾きが異なるランプ波の参照信号を順次生成する
     請求項7に記載の撮像素子。
  12.  複数の前記比較部の一部または全部が、前記アナログ信号を、傾きが互いに同一のランプ波の参照信号と比較し、
     前記アナログ信号を、傾きが互いに同一のランプ波の参照信号と比較する複数の比較部のそれぞれに対応するカウンタが出力するカウント値を加算平均する加算平均部をさらに備える
     請求項1に記載の撮像素子。
  13.  撮像素子の制御方法であって、
     複数の比較部が、光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力し、
     複数のカウンタが、互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力し、
     サンプルホールド部が、前記アナログ信号と傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波以外のランプ波の参照信号との比較を行う前記比較部が前記比較を開始する前に、前記垂直信号線を介して供給される前記アナログ信号を保持し、前記比較部が前記比較を行う間、前記垂直信号線と前記比較部との間を電気的に切断するとともに、保持している前記アナログ信号を前記比較部に供給する
     制御方法。
  14.   光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、
      互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタと、
      前記アナログ信号と傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波以外のランプ波の参照信号との比較を行う前記比較部が前記比較を開始する前に、前記垂直信号線を介して供給される前記アナログ信号を保持し、前記比較部が前記比較を行う間、前記垂直信号線と前記比較部との間を電気的に切断するとともに、保持している前記アナログ信号を前記比較部に供給するサンプルホールド部と
     を有する撮像素子と、
     前記撮像素子より出力される撮像画像のデジタルデータを画像処理する画像処理部と、
     前記画像処理部により画像処理された前記撮像画像のデジタルデータを記憶する記憶部と
     を備える撮像装置。
  15.  傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を、互いに異なるタイミングで生成する複数の参照信号生成部と、
     光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部が生成した前記参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、
     互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタと
     を備える撮像素子。
  16.  傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成した後、前記ランプ波とその他の傾きのランプ波とが電圧的に交差しないタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始する
     請求項15に記載の撮像素子。
  17.  傾きが最も緩やかなランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が前記参照信号を生成する前のタイミングにおいて、その他の傾きのランプ波の参照信号を生成する前記参照信号生成部が、前記参照信号の生成を開始する
     請求項15に記載の撮像素子。
  18.  選択されたカウンタが対応する比較器が利用する参照信号の電圧範囲を示すフラグ情報が、前記カウント値とともに出力される
     請求項15に記載の撮像素子。
  19.  撮像素子の制御方法であって、
     複数の参照信号生成部が、傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を、互いに異なるタイミングで生成し、
     複数の比較部が、光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部が生成した前記参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力し、
     複数のカウンタが、互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する
     制御方法。
  20.   傾きが互いに異なるランプ波の参照信号を、互いに異なるタイミングで生成する複数の参照信号生成部と、
      光電変換素子を含む画素から垂直信号線を介して供給されるアナログ信号を、互いに異なる前記参照信号生成部が生成した前記参照信号と比較し、比較結果を出力する複数の比較部と、
      互いに異なる前記比較部について、前記比較結果が反転するまでをカウントし、カウント値をデジタルデータとして出力する複数のカウンタと
     を有する撮像素子と、
     前記撮像素子より出力される撮像画像のデジタルデータを画像処理する画像処理部と、
     前記画像処理部により画像処理された前記撮像画像のデジタルデータを記憶する記憶部と
     を備える撮像装置。
