- the polymers of the various layers are preferably chosen to have similar rheological properties, e.g., melt viscosities, so that they can be co-extruded without significant flow disturbances.
- Extrusion conditions are chosen to adequately feed, melt, mix, and pump the respective polymers as feed streams or melt streams in a continuous and stable manner.
- Temperatures used to form and maintain each of the melt streams may be chosen to be within a range that avoids freezing, crystallization, or unduly high pressure drops at the low end of the temperature range, and that avoids material degradation at the high end of the range.
- Multilayer films 1 and 2 were made in this fashion from Cast Web 1 under the following conditions:
- the thickness of the untreated film in the neighborhood of the treated square was 24 microns with variations between 23 and 25 microns.
- the thickness of the treated zone was likewise measured as 24 microns over various locations, with variations between 24 and 25 microns.
- the transmission and reflection spectra of the treated zone and a neighboring untreated zone of Patterned Film 1, for normally incident light were measured using the Perkin-Elmer 950 spectrophotometer as presented in FIGS. 13A and 13B respectively.
- the IR-dye containing masterbatch was extruded into material stream 2 to achieve a nominal loading of 0.3 wt% in that material stream for Cast Web 4d.
- Different loading amounts were used for the other Cast Webs 4a-c, which were otherwise made in identical fashion to Cast Web 4d.
- the IR dye loadings of Cast Webs 4a, 4b, and 4c were calculated as 0.062, 0.105, and 0.185 wt %, respectively, and the loading for Cast Web 4d was 0.3 wt % as reported above.
- the stack may also have one or more second areas or zones with a second degree of processing, a second reflective characteristic, and a second degree of birefringence.
- the stack may further include one or more third areas or zones with a third degree of processing, a third reflective characteristic, and a third degree of birefringence, and so forth without limitation.
- the first, second, third, etc. zones or areas of the stack may be arranged in any desired manner. The transition from an unprocessed first zone to a fully processed second zone may be spatially abrupt or gradual. If gradual, then areas of the film between the first and second zones may be characterized as third, fourth, etc. zones having intermediate levels of processing.
