本発明は、 燃料電池用の電解質膜とそれを備える燃料電池に関する。 背景技術
燃料電池の一形態として固体高分子形燃料電池が知られている。 固体高分子形燃料電池 は他の形態の燃料電池と比較して作動温度が低く (一 3 0 °C〜 1 2 0 °C程度) 、 低コス ト、 コンパク ト化が可能なことから、 自動車の動力源等として期待されている。
図 5に示すように、 固体高分子形燃料電池 1は、 膜電極接合体 (M E A) 2を主要な構 成要素とし、 それを、 燃料 (水素) ガス流路 2 1を備えたアノード側セパレータ 2 0およ び空気 (酸素) 流路 3 1を備えた力ソード側セパレート 3 0で挟持して、 単セルと呼ばれ る 1つの燃料電池 1を形成している。 膜電極接合体 2は、 イオン交換膜である固体高分子 電解質膜 1 0の一方側にアノード側の触媒層 1 3 aとガス拡散層 1 4 aからなるアノード 側電極 1 5 aを積層し、 他方の側に力ソード側の触媒層 1 3 bとガス拡散層 1 4 bからな るカソード側電極 1 5 bを積層した構造を持つ。
固体高分子型燃料電池において、 電解質膜としては、 フッ素系電解質樹脂 (イオン交換 樹脂) であるパーフルォロスルホン酸ポリマーの薄膜 (米国、 デュポン社、 ナフイオン 膜) が主に用いられる (特許文献 1等) 。 また、 電解質樹脂単独の薄膜では十分な強度が 得られないことから、 延伸多孔質の補強膜 (例えば、 P T F Eやポリオレフイン樹脂等を 延伸して作成した薄膜) に、 溶媒に溶解した電解質樹脂を含浸させ乾燥させた補強膜型電 解質膜が用いられる (特許文献 2、 特許文献 3等) 。
また、 固体高分子型燃料電池で用いられるフッ素系電解質樹脂は、 含水することにより プロ トン伝導性を発現する。 プロ トン伝導性は含水量の大小に伴い変化し、 含水量が小さ いとプロ トン伝導性も小さくなる。 一方、 近年の燃料電池では、 システムの簡素化と、 コ ス ト低減のため、 より低加湿での運転が求められるようになっているが、 低加湿での運転 では、 プロ トン伝導性が低下することから、 高加湿のときと比べて発電性能が大幅に低下 する。 すなわち、 低加湿での運転状態になると、 燃料電池のアノード側は、 プロドンの移動に つれて、 力ソード側に水が移動する電気浸透現象が生じ、 より乾燥した状態となる。 ァノ 一ド側が乾燥するとァノード側の電解質のプロ トン伝導性が小さくなり、 電池全体と'して も抵抗が上がり、 電池性能が大幅に低下する。 このようなアノード側の乾燥を回避するた めに、 力ソード側でのプロ トン酸化反応により生成する生成水を、 うまくアノード側に移 動させる逆拡散水効果を利用することで、 低加湿状態での性能低下を回避する試みが検討 されている。
' 一般的には、 電解質膜の膜厚をより薄くすることで、 逆拡散水の移動距離を短く し、 ま た乾燥しているアノード側と湿潤な力ソード側との間の水の濃度勾配が大きくなり、 水の 移動度を大きく してカソ一ド側の生成水をアノード側に逆拡散水として移動させることが できる。

発明が解決しようとする課題
前記したように、 カソ一ド側の生成水をアノード側に逆拡散水として移動させ発電性能 の低下を防止する試みは、 主に電解質膜を薄膜化することによって行われている。 し力、し、 電解質膜の薄膜化も、 膜強度の問題や電池の耐久性の観点から、 大幅に薄くすることはで きず限界がある。 膜強度の向上を図る電解質膜として、 前記のように、 延伸多孔質膜を補 強膜に持つ補強膜型電解質膜が用いられるが、 補強膜を備えるためにやはり薄膜化には限 界があり、 十分な逆拡散水効果を期待することはできない。
本発明は、 上記の事情に鑑みてなされたものであり、 補強膜型電解質膜において、 補強 膜を備えながらも高い逆拡散水効果を発揮できるようにした補強膜型電解質膜、 およびそ れを持つ燃料電池を提供することを課題とする。 課題を解決するための手段
上記の課題を解決すべく、 本発明者らは多くの研究を行うことにより、 従来の補強膜型 電解質膜は、 延伸多孔質膜である補強膜が電解質膜の厚み方向の中央に位置しており、 補 強膜の両面に形成されている電解質榭脂層の厚さが等しいことから、 双方の電解質樹脂層 の理論吸水量は等しく、 補強膜型電解質膜の厚さに一義的に起因する以上の逆拡散水効果 を発揮できなかったところ、 補強膜型電解質膜の厚さ方向に吸水率勾配を積極的に形成す ることで、 従来厚さに一義的に起因していた以上の逆拡散水効果を補強型電解質膜に持た せる得ることを見出し、 本発明をなすにいたった。
すなわち、 本出願の第 1の発明による補強膜型電解質膜は、 電解質榭脂の中に延伸多孔 質膜を補強膜として埋設した補強膜型電解質膜であって、 前記埋設した補強膜の一方の面 側に形成される電解質樹脂層の厚みが他方の面側に形成される電解質榭脂層の厚みと比較 して厚くされていることを特徴とする。
また、 本出願の第 2の発明による補強膜型電解質膜は、 電解質樹脂の中に延伸多孔質膜 を補強膜として埋設した補強膜型電解質膜であって、 前記埋設した補強膜は気孔率の異な る複数枚の延伸多孔質膜よりなり、 該複数枚の延伸多孔質膜は気孔率の大きい順に電解質 膜の厚さ方向に配列していることを特徴とする。
本出願の第 3の発明による燃料電池は、 前記第 1の発明による補強膜型電解質膜の両面 に電極を積層した膜電極接合体をアノード側および力ソード側のセパレータで挟持した燃 料電池であって、 前記膜電極接合体はその補強膜型電解質膜における前記厚みの厚い方の 電解質樹脂層がカソード側のセパレ一タ側となるようにして、 両セパレータ間に挟持され ていることを特徴とする。
また、 本出願の第 4の発明による燃料電池は、 前記第 2の発明による補強膜型電解質膜 の両面に電極を積層した膜電極接合体をアノード側および力ソード側のセパレータで挟持 した燃料電池であって、 前記膜電極接合体はその補強膜型電解質膜における最も大きな気 孔率の延伸多孔質膜が力ソード側のセパレータ側となるようにして、 両セパレータ間に挟 持されていることを特徴とする。
本発明において、 電解質膜を構成する電解質樹脂としては、 パーフルォロ系高分子電解 質、 または炭化水素系高分子電解質を適宜選択して用いることができる。
本発明において、 延伸多孔質膜としての補強膜としては、 限定されないが、 ポリテトラ フルォロエチレン (P T F E ) が好ましく例示される。 その延伸量を制御することにより、 所望の引っ張り強度と気孔率を備えた延伸多孔質膜とすることができる。 気孔率は 5 0〜 9 5 %であることが電解質樹脂溶液を含浸させるのに適している。
本発明において、 電極は触媒層と拡散層からなる。 触媒層は、 電解質樹脂と触媒 (例え ば白金が例として挙げられる力 、 これに限らない) を担持した導電性材料 (例えばカーボ ンが例として挙げられる、 これに限らない) からなる混合物であり、 燃料電池で一般に用 いられるものであってよい。 拡散層も燃料電池で一般に用いられるものであってよぐ、 力 一ボンペーパーや力一ボンシー卜が例として挙げられる。
本発明において、 セパレータは燃料流路と酸化剤流路を形成する溝が形成されかつ集電 体として機能するものであり、 燃料流路を備えたものがアノード側セパレ一タ、 酸化剤流 路を備えたものが力ソード側セパレ一タである。 いずれのセパレータも燃料電池で一般に 用いられるものであってよい。
本発明による補強膜型電解質膜およびそれを用いた燃料電池によれば、 従来の同じ厚さ でありかつ厚さ方向の中央部に補強膜を備えた補強膜型電解質膜と比較して、 あるいは同 じ厚さでありかつ同じ気孔率の補強膜の複数枚が膜中に配列している補強膜型電解質膜と 比較して、 発電時に、 アノード側で低く力ソード側で高い含水率勾配を膜内に積極的に形 成することで水の濃度勾配を大きくすることができる。 それにより、 力ソード側からァノ ード側に水を移動させる逆拡散水効果を大きくすることができ、 低加湿運転で生じがちな アノード側のドライアップを効果的に防止することができる。 また、 力ソード側触媒層で 生成される生成水を吸収する能力も向上するので、 高加湿運転時に生じがちな力ソード側 電極でのフラッティングも防止できる。
さらに、 補強型電解質膜における力ソード側の吸水能力が向上することで、 発電時に力 ソード側触媒層の生成水をより多く吸収できるようになり、 低温時において触媒層中で発 生しがちな水の凍結を防止することができる。 それにより、 燃料電池の低温起動性能も向 上する。 図面の簡単な説明

図 1 (a) に示す本発明による補強型電解質膜 1 OAは、 電解質樹脂 1 1と、 延伸多孔 質膜である 1枚の補強膜 1 2とから構成され、 補強膜 1 2は補強型電解質膜 1 OAの厚さ 方向の一方側に偏位して電解質樹脂 1 1中に埋設している。 それにより、 補強膜 1 2の一 方の面側 (図で力ソード側として示す) に形成される電解質樹脂層 1 l bの厚みが、 他方 の面側 (図でアノード側として示す) に形成される電解質樹脂層 1 1 aの厚みと比較して 厚くなつている。 そのために、 補強型電解質膜 1 OAの厚み方向での含水率は、 アノード 側で小さく、 カソード側で大きくなる。
ちなみに、 図 1 (b) に示す従来の電解質膜 10では、 延伸多孔質膜である補強膜 1 2 が厚さ方向の中央に位置している。 そのために、 その両側に形成される電解質樹脂層 1 1 c, 1 1 cの厚さは等しく、 含水率は同じである。
図 2 (a) に示す本発明による補強型電解質膜 1 0 Bは、 電解質樹脂 1 1と、 気孔率の 異なる 2枚の延伸多孔質膜である補強膜 1 2 a, 1 2 bとから構成されており、 2枚の補 強膜 1 2 a, 1 2 bは、 補強型電解質膜 1 0 Bの厚さ方向にほぼ等しい間隔をおいて電解 質樹脂 1 1中に埋設している。 そして、 図で力ソード側に位置する補強膜 1 2 bは、 その 気孔率が、 図でアノード側に位置する捕強膜 1 2 aの気孔率よりも大きい。 気孔率の大き い方の補強膜 1 2 b内には、 比較して気孔率の小さい補強膜 1 2 aと比較して、 より多く の電解質樹脂 1 1が含浸する。 そのために、 補強型電解質膜 1 0 Bにおいても、 その厚み 方向での含水率は、 アノード側で小さく、 力ソード側で大きくなる。
ちなみに、 図 2 (b) に示す従来の電解質膜 1 0では、 気孔率が等しい 2枚の延伸多孔 質膜である補強膜 1 2、 1 2が、 補強型電解質膜 1 0の厚さ方向にほぼ等しい間隔をおい て電解質樹脂 1 1中に埋設している。 この場合には、 双方の補強膜 1 2、 1 2に含浸する 電解質樹脂 1 1の量は等しく、 補強型電解質膜 10における含水率は、 アノード側とカソ 一ド側でほぼ等しくなる。
上記の本発明による補強膜型電解質膜 1 ◦ A ( 1 0 B) を備えた燃料電池 1の模式的な 図が図 3に示される。 燃料電池 1において、 補強膜型電解質膜 1 0 A (1 OB) のァ'ノ一 ド側として説明した側に、 ァノ一ド側の触媒層 1 3 aとガス拡散層 14 aからなるァノー ド側電極 1 5 aを積層し、 力ソードと側として説明した側には、 力ソ一ド側の触媒層 1 3 bとガス拡散層 14 bからなるカソード側電極 1 5 bを積層して、 膜電極接合体 2を形成 している。 その膜電極接合体 2が、 燃料ガス入口 22と出口 23を備えたアノード側セパ レータ 20と、 酸化剤入口 32と出口 33を備えたカソード側セパレ一タ 30で挟持され て単セルとしての燃料電池 1とされている。
この形態の燃料電池 1では、 前記のように補強膜型電解質膜 1 OA (10 B) のァノ一 ド側とカソ一ド側で含水率が異なることから、 発電時に、 ァノード側で低くカソード側で 高い含水率勾配が補強膜型電解質膜 1 OA (10 B) 内に形成される。 それにより、 電解 質膜内での水の濃度勾配を大きくすることができ、 結果として、 図 1 (a) , 図 2 (a) に示すように、 カソード側からアノード側に水を移動させる逆拡散水効果を大きくするこ とができる。
そのために、 低加湿運転で生じがちなアノード側のドライアップを効果的に防止するこ とができる。 また、 補強膜型電解質膜 1 OA (1 0 B) の力ソード側において、 力ソード 側触媒層 1 3 bで生成される生成水を吸収する能力も向上するので、 高加湿運転時に生じ がちな力ソード側電極 1 5 bでのフラッティングも防止できる。 さらに、 補強型電解質膜 1 0 A ( 1 0 B) における力ソード側の吸水能力が向上することで、 発電時に力ソード側 触媒層 1 3 bの生成水をより多く吸収できるようになり、 低温時における触媒層中での水 の凍結を防止できることから、 燃料電池の低温起動性能も向上する。 実施例
以下、 実施例と比較例により本発明を説明する。
[実施例 1 ]
(1) PTFEを 2軸方向に延伸して、 引っ張り強度が樹脂換算で 20 OMp a, 気孔率 60%の第 1の延伸多孔質補強膜 1 2 aと、 引っ張り強度が樹脂換算で 1 0 OMp a, 気 孔率 80%の第 2の延伸多孔質補強膜 1 2 bとを用意した。
(2) 電解質樹脂の溶液 (高分子鎖末端が一 S03H、 デュポン社製高分子溶液 DE 20 20) を、 ガラス基板上に Sいた第 1の多孔質補強膜 12 aに注ぎ、 その上に第 2の多孔 質補強膜 12 bを置いて、 さらに前記電解質樹脂の溶液を注いた。 それを 70°Cで: I時間 乾燥させることにより、 図 2 (a) に示す構成を持つ厚さ約 30 / mの補強膜型電解質膜 を得た。
[実施例 2 ]
( 1 ) 実施例 1と同様の延伸多孔質補強膜 12 a、 12 bとを用意した。
(2) 電解質樹脂の前駆体高分子 (高分子鎖末端が一 S02F、 デュポン社製高分子 NE 1 11 F) を押出し成形機にて押し出し、 厚み約 8 μπιの薄膜を得た。
(3) 3枚の前記電解質樹脂前駆体薄膜と延伸多孔質補強膜 12 a、 12 bとを交互に積 層して図 2 (a) に示す層構造となるようにし、 230°Cの真空環境下、 5 k g/cm2 の圧力にて含浸処理を行い、 透明の膜を得た。
(4) 上記透明膜を、 1 mo 1 ZL水酸化ナトリウム水溶液とアルコールの混合溶液で加 水分解後、 1 mo I ZL硫酸水溶液で高分子鎖末端を酸型 (一 S03H) に変換した。'
(5) イオン交換能が付与された膜を純水により洗浄後、 乾燥して厚さ約 30 / mの補強 膜型電解質膜を得た。
[比較例 1 ]
(1) PTFEを 2軸方向に延伸して、 引っ張り強度が樹脂換算で 10 OMp a, 気孔率 80 %の延伸多孔質補強膜を 2枚用意した。
(2) 電解質樹脂の溶液 (高分子鎖末端が一 S03H、 デュポン社製高分子溶液 DE 2◦ 20) を、 ガラス基板上に置いた 1枚の多孔質補強膜 12に注ぎ、 その上にもう 1枚の多 孔質補強膜 12を置いて、 さらに前記電解質榭脂の溶液を注いた。 それを 70°Cで 1時間 乾燥させることにより、 図 2 (b) に示す構成を持つ厚さ約 30 μιηの補強膜型電解質膜 を得た。
[比較例 2 ]
( 1 ) 比較例 1と同様の延伸多孔質補強膜 12を 2枚用意した。
(2) 電解質樹脂の前駆体高分子 (高分子鎖末端が一 S02F、 デュポン社製高分子 NE 11 I F) を押出し成形機にて押し出し、 厚み約 8 μΐηの薄膜を得た。
(3) 3枚の前記電解質樹脂前駆体薄膜と 2枚の延伸多孔質補強膜 12を交互に積層して 図 2 (b) に示す層構造となるようにし、 230°Cの真空環境下、 5 k gZcm2の圧力 にて含浸処理を行い、 透明の膜を得た。 (4) 上記透明膜を、 1 mo 1ノし水酸化ナトリウム水溶液とアルコールの混合溶液で加 水分解後、 1 mo 1 /L硫酸水溶液で高分子鎖末端を酸型 (一 S03H) に変換した。
(5) イオン交換能が付与された膜を純水により洗浄後、 乾燥して厚ざ約, 3Ό·μπι'の補強 膜型電解質膜を得た。
実施例 2および比較例 1, 2で得られた補強型電解質膜のそれぞれの両面に、 同じ 触媒層を転写し、 同じ力一ボンペーパーをガス拡散層として積層して、 膜電極接合体とし た。 それぞれの膜電極接合体を、 その補強型電解質膜における気孔率の大きい方の補強膜 1 2 b側がカソ一ド側のセパレータ側となるようにして、 ァノード側およびカソード側の セパレータで挟持して燃料電池とした。
[試験]
実施例 2および比較例 1, 2の燃料電池について、 同じ条件で発電試験を行い、 低 加湿条件および高加湿条件の双方で電池評価を行った。 その結果を、 図 4 (a) (高加湿 条件) , 図 4 (b) (低加湿条件) に示した。
[考察]
図 4 (a) , (b) に示すように、 高加湿の条件では、 それぞれに大きな違いは見られ なかったが、 高電流域において、 実施例 1, 2と比較して比較例 1, 2はセル電圧の低下 が大きい。 これは、 比較例 1, 2においてフラッティングが起こっていることが推測でき る。 一方、 低加湿条件では、 すべての電流域で、 実施例 1, 2が比較例 1, 2よりも高性 能を示している。 これは、 実施例 2では電解質膜内の水移動、 すなわち力ソード側の 生成水がアノード側へ逆拡散水として移動する量が、 比較例 1, 2と比較して多くなり、 アノード側の乾燥を抑制した結果であると考えられる。
以上のことから、 本発明によって、 より高性能な燃料電池を提供できることが立証され る。

Claims

請求の範囲
1 . 電解質樹脂の中に延伸多孔質膜を補強膜として埋設した補強膜型電解質膜であって、 前記埋設した補強膜の一方の面側に形成される電解質榭脂層の厚みが他方の面側に形成さ れる電解質樹脂層の厚みと比較して厚くされていることを特徴とする補強膜型電解質膜。
2 . 電解質樹脂の中に延伸多孔質膜を補強膜として埋設した補強膜型電解質膜であって、 前記埋設した補強膜は気孔率の異なる複数枚の延伸多孔質膜よりなり、 該複数枚の延伸多 孔質膜は気孔率の大きい順に電解質膜の厚さ方向に配列していることを特徴とする補強膜 型電解質膜。
3 . 請求項 1に記載の補強膜型電解質膜の両面に電極を積層した膜電極接合体をアノード 側およびカソード側のセパレータで挟持した燃料電池であって、 前記膜電極接合体はその 補強膜型電解質膜における前記厚みの厚い方の電解質樹脂層がカソ一ド側のセパレータ側 となるようにして、 両セパレータ間に挟持されていることを特徴とする燃料電池。
4 . 請求項 2に記載の補強膜型電解質膜の両面に電極を積層した膜電極接合体をァノ一ド 側およびカソード側のセパレータで挟持した燃料電池であって、 前記膜電極接合体はその 補強膜型電解質膜における最も大きな気孔率の延伸多孔質膜が力ソ一ド側のセパレ一タ側 となるようにして、 両セパレ一タ間に挟持されていることを特徴とする燃料電池。
