Definitions
- the present invention relates to effect pigments with an aluminum or aluminum alloy core and an aluminum or aluminum oxide or hydroxide-containing layer enveloping the aluminum or aluminum alloy core, obtainable by wet chemical oxidation of platelet-shaped aluminum or aluminum alloy pigments, the content of metallic aluminum in the aluminum or aluminum alloy core is not more than 90% by weight based on the total weight of the pigment. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for producing these effect pigments and to the use thereof.
- Effect pigments create an optical impression that depends on the angle of incidence or observation of the application. This is due on the one hand to the parallel orientation of the platelet-shaped pigments within the application medium and on the other hand to the specific optical properties of the effect pigment. Because of their high reflection of visible light, aluminum pigments in particular look like an ensemble of small mirrors. This manifests itself in a pronounced light-dark contrast (“brightness flop") when viewed from the glancing angle to steeper viewing angles. Such pigments can be coated with different layers of refractive and / or colored materials of different strengths. The result is brilliant colored effect pigments Coloring is a mixture of absorption, interference and reflection phenomena, and effect pigments with strong color flops are achieved in particular by taking advantage of interference phenomena.
- gold bronze pigments which are alloys of copper and zinc, can produce golden shades.
- Additional colored metal pigments can be produced by coating them with colored and / or high-index oxides.
- iron oxide-coated aluminum pigments which have intense golden to orange hues at the gloss angle, are described in EP 33 457 and under the trade name "Paliocrom ® " from BASF, Ludwigshafen, Germany. These are only aluminum pigments coated with iron oxide.
- the coloring is a mixture of the absorption color of the reddish iron oxide in the hematite modification, interference effects on the iron oxide layer (refractive index: approx. 2.3) and reflection on the aluminum surface.
- the iron oxide layer as the coating has intimate contact with the underlying aluminum pigment, this very exothermic reaction can be started after a certain activation energy has been applied. Due to the finely divided nature of the pigments, "burning through” is associated with considerable safety risks. In practice, this means that the iron oxide layer must be limited to a layer thickness which corresponds to a sub-stoichiometric amount of iron oxide. In this way, for example, strong red tones are not Such shades of color would appear due to the interference spiral only with higher iron oxide layer thicknesses after the shades of gold, orange and copper. The production of these effect pigments is carried out by CVD processes in a fluidized bed reactor Aluminum pigments like.
- effect pigments are also known in which a coating made of a material with a low refractive index is first applied and then a partially transparent coating with a high-index material.
- the latter coating is metal layers or high-index metal oxides or sulfides.
- pigments are first provided with a coating made of a low-refractive material (n ⁇ 1.65) and then with a partially transparent metal coating. Optically extremely homogeneous and even layers are created. These pigments have the disadvantage that they are not completely covered on the sides by the outer layers due to their method of manufacture. If the metal core consists or the outer layers are made of corrosion-prone aluminum, the use of these pigments in water-based paints, for example, would lead to gassing problems due to the evolution of hydrogen. The outer metal layers can also cause corrosion problems. Another disadvantage is the extremely high manufacturing costs. They also prevent the use of these pigments in many market segments.
- EP 0 668 329 A2 describes an effect pigment in which aluminum pigments are first coated wet-chemically with silicon oxide or oxide hydrate or with aluminum oxide or oxide hydrate. This is followed by coating with metal using the CVD process or by electroless wet-chemical metal deposition. Alternatively, non-selectively absorbing (colorless) metal oxides are separated from organic metal compounds in an organic solvent by a CVD process in a fluidized bed reactor or wet-chemically.
- EP 0 708 154 A2 describes effect pigments with first a coating with a refractive index n ⁇ 1.8 and then a colored coating with n> 2.0.
- the high-index coating is preferably applied by CVD processes in the fluidized bed reactor, but wet-chemical processes by hydrolytic decomposition of organic metal compounds are also described here. Colored effect pigments are obtained which have an extraordinarily strong color flop. When using iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) as a high-index layer, pigments in the gold-red range are accessible.
- the aluminum pigments must first be passivated. Treatment with hydrogen peroxide or nitric acid is mentioned here as options. However, these processes do not result in well passivated pigments. If the treatment is too violent, the optical properties (brilliance, brightness) of the pigments will be significantly damaged. This poses the problem of insufficient gassing stability during the further oxide coatings and in the end product.
- the original thickness of the aluminum pigment is thus also present in the interference pigment as a reflector core. Due to the manufacturing process, however, this thickness is far above the layer thickness that would be necessary for optical opacity and thus very good hiding power. Therefore, the aluminum cores in the pigments disclosed in the above-mentioned documents are thicker than necessary. This manifests itself in a loss of coverage. All other coatings also increase the total layer thickness of the effect pigment, which leads to reduced gloss, glossy fog problems in the coating and poor image sharpness.
- EP 0 848 735 describes wet-chemical oxidized aluminum pigments which are oxidized in a mixture of water and an organic solvent.
- the pigments do not need to be degreased before oxidation.
- the pigments have colors ranging from nickel, light gold to bronze. However, these colors are only weak and the range of colors is very limited.
- the published patent application DE 26 27 428 describes a process for the production of colored aluminum powder.
- the deposition of a metal salt and an organic chelating agent from a weakly alkaline solution is disclosed.
- the aluminum pigments can be coated with a superficial smooth boehmite film.
- the surface and smooth boehmite film produced according to the teaching of DE 26 27 428 is limited in its layer thickness and lies far below the range from which this layer is effective as an interference path for the generation of interference colors.
- colored pigments are obtained which are only in the gold range. Red or green pigments are not available with this.
- the object of the present invention is to provide colored and weather-resistant effect pigments which have a minimal overall thickness, firmly adhering oxide layers and are safe in terms of safety. Furthermore, the effect pigments should have a soft color flop or an intense color without a significant color flop. Compared to the known interference pigments, they should have a significantly improved opacity. Another object of the present invention is to develop an inexpensive method for producing these colored aluminum pigments.
- the object on which the invention is based is achieved by effect pigments having an aluminum or aluminum alloy core and an aluminum oxide or aluminum oxide / hydroxide-containing layer enveloping the aluminum or aluminum alloy core, obtainable by wet chemical oxidation of platelet-shaped aluminum or aluminum alloy pigments, the content of metallic aluminum in the aluminum or aluminum alloy core is not more than 90% by weight, based on the total weight of the pigment, the oxidized aluminum or aluminum alloy pigments having at least one high-index metal chalcogenide layer with a refractive index of> 1.95 and between the high-index metal chalcogenide layer and a mixed layer is formed in the enveloping aluminum oxide or aluminum oxide / hydroxide-containing layer.
- the aluminum pigments used have a minimum purity of 98% by weight, more preferably at least 99% by weight, even more preferably at least 99.5% by weight, in each case based on the weight of the starting pigment used ,
- the metal content different from aluminum is preferably at least 5% by weight, based on the metal content of the starting pigment used.
- the aluminum alloy preferably contains iron, manganese, copper, vanadium, chromium, nickel, cobalt, silicon, magnesium, zinc and / or titanium.
- the aluminum oxide layer or aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer produced in the effect pigments according to the invention by wet chemical oxidation can be a pure aluminum oxide layer or a mixed layer of aluminum oxide and aluminum hydroxide. For the sake of simplicity of writing, the following is mainly referred to as an aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer.
- the metal chalcogenides are preferably metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal selenides, metal tellurides or mixtures thereof.
- the metal chalcogenides are particularly preferably metal oxides.
- the oxidized aluminum pigments obtained by wet chemical oxidation have an oxide / hydroxide layer with a pronounced porosity.
- a mixture layer preferably an oxide mixture layer, can be formed in the further coating with a higher refractive index metal chalcogenide, preferably metal oxide, since the precipitated metal chalcogenide, preferably metal oxide, at least partially penetrates into the pores with a refractive index> 1.95.
- the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer produced by wet chemical oxidation furthermore represents an effective barrier for possible aluminothermic reactions of the aluminum core and the metal chalcogenide layer, preferably metal oxide layer, with a refractive index> 1.95.
- step (b) applying at least one metal chalcogenide layer with a refractive index of> 1.95 to the pigments oxidized in step (a), with a difference between the Metal chalcogenide layer and the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer forms a mixed layer.
- the object of the invention is further achieved by the use of the effect pigments prepared according to one of claims 1 to 27 in coatings, lacquers, automotive lacquers, powder lacquers, printing inks, inks, plastics, glasses, ceramics or cosmetic preparations.
- effect pigments according to the invention are particularly suitable for use in cosmetic preparations such as nail polish, lipstick, make-up, hair care products, skin care products, mascara, eye shadows, eyeliner, blush, perfume, eau de toilette, powder (loose or pressed) or tattoo formulations.
- the present invention relates to the provision of effect pigments with a soft color flop and good hiding power. They are built up first of all from a wet-chemically oxidized platelet-shaped aluminum or aluminum alloy pigment with a metallic aluminum content of not more than 90% by weight, based on the total weight. To create and intensify the color, it is combined with at least one other
- a mixed layer is formed which has a refractive index which lies between the refractive index of the pure aluminum oxide layer or hydroxide layer and the refractive index of the pure metal chalcogenide layer, preferably a metal oxide layer.
- Effect pigments with a core made of aluminum are on the market under the trade name "Variocrom ® " and are offered by BASF.
- a thick, low-refractive SiO 2 layer is wet-chemically struck on aluminum flakes using the sol-gel process and then in Fluid bed process made of iron pentacarbonyl precipitates an iron oxide layer.
- the aluminum core serves as a reflector material and, as a completely opaque material, significantly increases the opacity compared to interference pigments such as pearlescent.
- the SiO 2 layer serves as a low-refractive interference path.
- Products on the market (“Magic Red TM "Magic and gold TM" have Si0 2 layer thicknesses of 320 to 400 nm (R. Schmidt, N. Mronga, V.
- Effect pigments with a soft interference color flop are advantageously built up from layers that are not completely homogeneous in terms of appearance EP 0 848 735, which is hereby incorporated by reference, provide excellent starting pigments in order to provide effect pigments with a soft color flop after further coating with highly refractive metal chalcogenide layers, preferably metal oxide layers, and it has also been found that the wet chemical oxidation of aluminum flakes is carried out in a controlled manner
- the aluminum oxide or aluminum hydroxide layer serves on the one hand as an interference color path and on the other hand around the subsequently applied metal chalcogenide layer ten, preferably metal oxide layers, reliable and firmly anchored.
- the aluminum core or the aluminum alloy core can act as a barrier layer and effectively prevent the aluminothermic reaction between the aluminum core or the aluminum alloy core and the high-index metal chalcogenide layer, preferably metal oxide layer. This ensures that the effect pigments according to the invention are safe in terms of safety.
- the metallic core i.e. the aluminum core or aluminum alloy core
- the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer grows partly into the core and partly onto the core.
- the metallic core is roughened to a great extent, which can be demonstrated by cross-sections using electron microscopy. This very roughened metal surface causes a greater scatter of incident light compared to smooth metal surfaces. This in turn contributes to a soft color flop of the effect pigments according to the invention.
- the aluminum oxide or hydroxide layer produced by wet chemical oxidation has a porous structure. Pores arise, among other things, from the hydrogen gas released during wet chemical oxidation, which makes its way through the resulting aluminum oxide or hydroxide layer: 2 AI + (n + 3) H 2 O ⁇ AI 2 O 3 x nH 2 O + 3 H 2 t
- the porous structure is noticeable, for example, in an increase in the specific surface area compared to the untreated aluminum pigment.
- This can be done using BET measurements can be reproduced:
- the specific surface area It. BET increases by at least a factor of 2.5, preferably at least by a factor of 7, particularly preferably at least by a factor of 10 and very particularly preferably at least a factor of 15 compared to the untreated pigment.
- the layer thicknesses of the aluminum oxide / hydroxide depend on the degree of oxidation of the aluminum and on the layer thickness of the aluminum pigment used. They are 20 to 500 nm, preferably 30 to 450 nm, more preferably 50 to 400 nm and even more preferably 70 to 300 nm.
- the porosity of the aluminum oxide layer means that the metal chalcogenide layer with a refractive index> 1.95 is initially at least partially precipitated into the pores. This creates a distinctive mixed oxide layer. This is connected to a gradient of the refractive index within the layer package and perpendicular to the pigment surface.
- the refractive index varies between the refractive index of the pure aluminum oxide or hydroxide layer and the refractive index of the pure high-index metal chalcogenide layer. All of these effects ultimately contribute to a soft, subtle color flop of the effect pigment according to the invention. Only when coating with larger amounts of oxide does a largely homogeneous oxide layer with a higher refractive index arise.
- the mixed layer formed between the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer and the applied metal chalcogenide layer, preferably metal oxide layer layer, preferably has a layer thickness of at least 10 nm, more preferably of at least 20 nm, even more preferably of at least 30 nm.
- the high-index metal chalcogenide layer preferably a metal oxide layer, with a refractive index> 1.95 can, on the one hand, be colored and comprise materials such as iron oxides, iron oxide hydrates, vanadium oxides, tungsten oxides, chromium oxides and / or molybdenum sulfide. It can consist of successive layers of these materials, of mixed layers of these materials or of successive layers of the pure layers and / or of the mixed layers of these materials.
- the chalcogenide layer preferably a metal oxide layer
- modifications such as hematite, goethite and / or magnetite or mixtures thereof are preferably used. Red iron oxide layers are predominantly present in the hematite modification. Color pigments of this type are of particular interest in terms of color, particularly for the gold-red range.
- chromium (III) hydroxide is used as the metal oxide, effect pigments in the green range are preferably obtained.
- the layer thicknesses of both the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer and the high-index metal chalcogenide layer preferably metal oxide layer
- effect pigments with very subtle color flops can be obtained. If one adjusts the layer thickness of the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer in such a way that it enhances the intrinsic color of the colored metal chalcogenide, preferably metal oxide, for example red
- Iron oxide hematite
- green in the case of chromium hydroxide, so strong effect pigments are accessible without an essential, preferably without, color flop.
- the color flop ⁇ H * anchor is quantified as the maximum difference between the individual H * anchor values of the five anchor angles 257140 °; 457150 °; 457 120 °; 757120 ° and 75790 ° understood. The details of this and the application system are described below.
- ⁇ H * Ank ⁇ r values from 1.5 to 50, preferably from 2.0 to 45, particularly preferably from 2.5 to 40 and further particularly preferably from 2.5 to 35 are used in the context of this invention Roger that.
- the effect pigments according to the invention therefore have an angle of incidence of 45 ° and an observation angle of 110 ° in relation to that in the application system described below and the specified measurement conditions
- Surface level preferably at least one chroma C * of 15, more preferably of 20, particularly preferably of 25 and further particularly preferably of 35.
- the effect pigments according to the invention can advantageously have only inorganic coatings and are therefore extremely weather-stable.
- iron oxide layers there is basically an inherent security risk as a coating material for aluminum pigments. If iron oxide is deposited directly on the finely divided aluminum flakes, there is a risk of a thermite reaction after the appropriate activation energy has been added:
- the pigments according to the invention offer the great advantage that the aluminum oxide / hydroxide produced by wet chemical oxidation acts as a barrier layer between iron oxide and aluminum.
- the layer thickness of this aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer is preferably at least 20 nm, more preferably 30 to 40 nm. According to a further preferred embodiment, the layer thickness is in the range from 80 to 300 nm.
- the metal chalcogenide layer preferably metal oxide layer, with a refractive index> 1.95 has no significant intrinsic color. In this case, materials such as titanium oxide, zirconium oxide, zinc oxide, tin oxide and / or cerium oxide are preferably used.
- a further embodiment according to the invention finally relates to coatings with metal chalcogenides, preferably metal oxides, with a refractive index> 1.95, in which colored and non-colored layers alternate. Up to 4 layers can be applied in this way. In this way, particularly strong interference colors can be achieved. If there are more than 4 layers, the effect pigment loses coverage due to the ever lower relative aluminum content.
- colorless or layers can be alternated with colored layers without substantial self-coloring.
- layer packets such as TiO 2 / Fe 2 O 3 can be deposited on the wet-chemically oxidized aluminum.
- Another significant advantage of the wet chemical oxidation of aluminum pigments to produce an aluminum oxide / hydroxide is the fact that the oxide or oxide / hydroxide formed - in contrast to all known coating methods - partly grows out of the aluminum core, but partly in it grows.
- the pigments according to the invention are therefore not a coating by precipitation of aluminum oxide / hydroxide, as is conventionally applied to pigments, but rather the production of an aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer from and on the aluminum pigment or aluminum alloy pigment.
- Anchoring aluminum surfaces in the coatings which have been further noticed is much worse than on the rugged or roughened surface of the aluminum or aluminum alloy pigments prepared according to the invention.
- Another advantage is the reduction in the thickness of the aluminum core due to the growing in aluminum oxide or hydroxide. As a result, the relative hiding power of the effect pigment is significantly increased. For good coverage, it is sufficient, for example, if the reflector core made of aluminum or aluminum alloy in the colored effect pigment is on average not more than 70 nm, preferably 70 to 40 nm thick, since it is practically opaque in these cases too.
- the aluminum core of the effect pigments according to the invention generally has an average thickness of 10 to 250 nm, preferably 15 to 200 nm, preferably 20 to 150 nm, further preferably 30 to 100 nm and even more preferably 40 to 80 nm Controlling the degree of oxidation and by selecting aluminum pigments or aluminum alloy pigments of a certain thickness, the properties of the effect pigment can be specifically influenced.
- the smaller thickness of the aluminum or aluminum alloy core in the effect pigments according to the invention likewise reduces their total layer thickness. This results in better orientation and
- Stacking of the pigments in the application medium such as a varnish. For example, increased gloss, reduced gray haze and better image sharpness (DOI) are the result.
- the total layer thickness of the effect pigments according to the invention is preferably less than 900 nm, more preferably less than 800 nm, even more preferably less than 700 nm and furthermore preferably less than 600 nm.
- the total layer thickness can be, for example, 300 nm or 400 nm.
- the form factor, ie the quotient of the length of the pigments and their thickness, is preferably more than 20, more preferably more than 25, even more preferably more than 30 and further preferably more than 40 for the effect pigments according to the invention.
- the length of the pigments is here represented by the d 50 value of the total passage distribution of the volume distribution of laser diffraction size determinations.
- an iron oxide layer is applied to the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer of the aluminum pigment or aluminum alloy pigment produced by wet chemical oxidation.
- the wet-chemical oxidized aluminum pigment is first provided with a low-index oxide before coating with a high-index metal chalcogenide, preferably metal oxide, with a refractive index> 1.95.
- the refractive index is preferably ⁇ 1.8. This measure can, for example, increase the gassing stability of the effect pigment. This could be advantageous in aggressive media such as water-based paints due to the high porosity of the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer.
- SiO 2 , boron oxide, wet-chemical precipitated aluminum oxide or mixtures thereof are preferably used as suitable materials for such a coating.
- this oxide layer with a refractive index ⁇ 1.8 preferably does not completely fill the pores obtained in the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer produced by wet chemical oxidation.
- This optional additional oxide layer is preferably applied in amounts of 1 to 15% by weight, more preferably 2 to 10% by weight and further preferably 3 to 7% by weight, in each case based on the weight of the entire effect pigment , Below 1% by weight, the coating with an oxide with a refractive index ⁇ 1.8, for example with regard to gassing stabilization, is not effective.
- the mixed layer can also consist essentially or completely of low-refractive oxide and the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer produced by wet chemical oxidation.
- the thickness of this common mixed layer is preferably at least 10 nm. More preferably, the thickness of the mixed layer is at least 20 nm, even more preferably at least 30 nm.
- metal chalcogenide particles with an oxide having a refractive index ⁇ 1.8 are used during the coating process Refractive index> 1.95 added.
- the metal chalcogenide particles preferably have an average size which allows them to be largely incorporated into the porous aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer. An average size of these metal chalcogenide particles of less than 40 nm, preferably less than 30 nm, is preferred.
- the metal chalcogenide particles are preferably nanoscale metal oxide particles and particularly preferably nanoscale iron oxide particles.
- a mixed layer is formed from the aluminum oxide / hydroxide, the oxide with a refractive index ⁇ 1.8 and the metal chalcogenide with a refractive index> 1.95.
- At least one further layer with a refractive index ⁇ 1.8 can likewise be precipitated on the metal chalcogenide layer, metal oxide layer, with a refractive index> 1.95.
- This layer can also give the colored effect pigment gassing stability as a further protective layer and thus improve its use in, for example, water-based paints.
- These additionally coated effect pigments can optionally also be provided with reactive orientation agents, as described, for example, in EP 1 084 198, which is hereby incorporated by reference. This enables a better connection to the paint system, which, for example, enables better condensation resistance.
- the further layer with a refractive index ⁇ 1.8 is preferably composed of silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide and / or hydroxide, boron oxide or mixtures thereof.
- a silicon oxide layer and subsequently an iron oxide layer are first applied to a wet-chemical oxidized aluminum or aluminum alloy pigment.
- the process for producing the pigments according to the invention is divided into two steps. First, the aluminum pigments are oxidized based on the method disclosed in accordance with the teaching of EP 0 848 735. The disclosure of EP 0 848 735 is hereby incorporated by reference.
- aluminum pigments are preferably suspended in an organic solvent, brought to the reaction temperature, and the oxidation reaction is started by adding oxidizing agent, preferably water, and optionally a catalyst.
- oxidizing agent preferably water, and optionally a catalyst.
- the aluminum or aluminum alloy pigments are preferably oxidized at pH 7 to pH 12 in a mixture of water and one or more water-miscible organic solvents.

- the oxidation of the aluminum or aluminum alloy pigments is usually carried out at a temperature between room temperature and the boiling point of the solvent.
- the precipitation of metal chalcogenide, preferably metal oxide, with a refractive index> 1.95 can preferably be carried out by dissolving a metal salt in a predominantly organic medium and preferably at a constant pH and preferably constant temperature to give a dispersion or suspension of the oxidized aluminum pigments is metered in predominantly organic medium.
- an oxide layer with a refractive index ⁇ 1.8 is first applied before the application of a high-index metal chalcogenide layer, preferably a metal oxide layer, with a refractive index> 1.95.
- Suitable metal salts are the halides, in particular the chlorides, and nitrates or acetates of the corresponding metals, provided that they are soluble in the predominantly organic medium used. It is also possible to use complex salts. Acetylacetonates such as Ti (acac) 4 , for example, can be used as complex ligands.
- the pH depends on the metal chalcogenide to be precipitated, preferably metal oxide, and can be readily determined by a person skilled in the art.
- the pH can optionally be brought to a desired value before the respective precipitation by adding suitable acids or bases.
- suitable acids are in particular mineral acids such as HCl or H 2 SO 4 .

- a particular advantage of this predominantly organic solvent is the fact that the oxidized aluminum pigments are not attacked even at extreme pH values such as ⁇ 3 and> 8 compared to a purely aqueous medium.
- the object on which the invention is based is further achieved by providing a coating composition which contains effect pigments according to the invention.
- the coating agent is preferably selected from the group consisting of coatings, lacquers,

- Oxidation The aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer was produced in accordance with the process disclosed in EP 0 848 735. 100 g of aluminum pigment in the form of a paste with 240 g of isopropanol were placed in a flat-section reaction vessel of sufficient size and dispersed for 10 minutes. A mixture of demineralized water (demineralized water) and base (for amounts, see Table 1) was then added to the vessel. The suspension was heated to just before the boiling point. After a heating time of 7 hours, the suspension was allowed to cool. 16 hours later, the mixture was sucked off through a Buchner funnel and the filter cake was dried in a vacuum drying cabinet at 100 ° C. for 6 hours under a N 2 purge.

- Comparative Example 10 + 11 The marketable products Paliocrom ® L2000 and L2800 Paliocrom ® (BASF, Ludwigshafen, Germany) Analytical data, and gloss values of drawdowns of Examples and Comparative Examples are given in Table 2 below.
- Comparative Example 15 E900 aluminum powder (Eckart, Theory, Germany): Very fine commercially available aluminum powder.
- Tab. 1 Reaction parameters for the preparation of Examples 1-5 and 12-14 according to the invention.
- Example 1 shows an SEM image of a cross section of the pigments according to the invention (from Example 3).
- the pigment has been measured at an extremely flat angle. As a result, the interface is very well resolved.
- the aluminum oxide / hydroxide phase can be seen as a dark contrast to the pure aluminum phase, while iron oxide produces a light contrast.
- the iron oxide layer has a pronounced particulate structure.
- a mixed layer can be clearly seen at the iron oxide / aluminum oxide phase boundary. Small iron oxide particles are recognizably embedded in the porous aluminum oxide layer.
- the table also lists the gloss values measured on doctor blade deductions (see below). It can be seen that especially the Variocrom ® pigments, which have a small grain size distribution and a very high thickness due to their high SiO 2 content, clearly have the worst luster properties. Examples 1-5 according to the invention show reduced gloss compared to comparative example 7 (oxidized aluminum pigment without Fe 2 O 3 coating) or comparative example 6 due to the additional iron oxide layer. However, their gloss is higher than the Paliocrom ® products coated only with iron oxide and significantly higher than the Variocrom ® products. Various tests were performed on some of the examples and are described below.
- the Waring Blendor Test In industry, many paints are processed in circulatory systems. The paint components are exposed to high shear forces. The Waring Blendor Test now simulates these conditions and is used to determine the loop or shear stability. Pigments in particular, whose coating is not adequately anchored to the carrier material, show strong deviations in the brightness values from the untreated applications in this test. The Waring Blendor Test can thus be understood as a measure of the intermediate adhesion of the individual coatings to shear forces.
- the pigment paste was weighed out and gradually pasted with a conventional wet lacquer based on hydroxy-functional acrylates in an 880 mL beaker. After that was adjust the viscosity with butyl acetate / xylene 1: 1 to 17 "in a DIN 4 mm beaker. A total of 600 g of lacquer were produced, of which 400 g were filled into a double-walled 1 kg container with water cooling and placed under the dispenser (Waring Blendor) The stirring time was 8 minutes at 13,500 rpm, then 200 g of lacquer were removed and the rest was stirred for a further 12 minutes.
- the number of spray coats was chosen so that there was a dry paint layer thickness of 15-20 ⁇ m.
- effect pigments are considered to be shear-stable if the brightness difference ⁇ E * to the untreated sample is less than 1 in the application after the Waring Blendort test. This should apply to all measuring angles.
- the finished lacquer was applied on a doctor blade device with a wet film thickness of 50 ⁇ m on test cards No. 2853 from Byk Gardner (contrast paper).
- the paint applications were measured on a black and white background using a goniospectrophotometer from Optronic Multiflash, Berlin, Germany, at a measuring angle of 110 ° relative to the gloss angle.
- the quotient of the brightness values from black to white background was plotted against the pigmentation level in% by weight (FIG. 4).
- a coverage criterion a value greater than 0.98 is common in the literature for aluminum pigments, as mentioned, for example, in EP 0451 785. Because of their complete opacity for visible light and their plane-parallel orientation in the paint, aluminum pigments have excellent hiding power.
- the multi-coated effect pigments according to the invention which, like similar effect pigments from the prior art, had at least a five-layer structure, naturally had poorer coverage compared to pure aluminum pigments due to their relatively low aluminum content. Therefore, good coverage can already be assumed for this type of effect pigment with a quotient of 0.9.
- FIG. 4 shows that the best specific hiding power was achieved by the pigment of example 5 according to the invention and comparative examples 7 and 10, which as three-layer pigments each have only one coating.
- Example 5 according to the invention an extremely thin aluminum pigment (thickness only about 110 nm) was used as the starting material. For this reason, the hiding power of the coated pigment is also excellent, despite the extremely low aluminum content (only 20% by weight).
- the curves can be extrapolated to the quotient 0.9.
- the weight of pigment surface required to achieve sufficient hiding power can be calculated using the above formula.
- These values and the specific opacity are listed in Table 3.
- gloss values measured at a pigmentation level of 10% are listed for comparison.
- Example 4 has a lower hiding power, but good gloss values.
- the advantage of the effect pigments according to the invention here lies in particular in the optical properties. They have light, subtle color flops that are completely absent from the strong-colored Paliocrom ® products. Of the effect pigments according to the invention, the effect pigment of Example 4 had the strongest color flop in relative terms.
- the Variocrom ® products have strong color flops.
- the specific hiding power is comparable to Examples 1 and 2 according to the invention, but the area-related hiding power is lower.
- the gloss of doctor blade prints with these comparative pigments is significantly weaker. This is due to the low form factor of these pigments.
- the form factor is small because both the Longitudinal expansion is low and the total thickness of the pigments is high. The thickness is approx. 800 - 1,000 nm, which leads to a form factor below 25.
- the coverage properties of the pigments of the inventive example 5 are even better than those of the 3-layer pigments Paliocrom ® L 2800 or Aloxal ® 3010.
- the aluminum pigment used in this case for the oxidation had an average initial thickness of only about 110 nm.
- the effective thickness of the oxidized pigment coated with iron oxide is comparable to that of a conventional aluminum pigment such as Mex 2154, ie 300-400 nm.
- the advantages of the effect pigments according to the invention therefore result from the sum of various properties.
- the pigments according to the invention have good hiding power, good mechanical and chemical stability, high gloss and light, subtle color flops. Overall, none of the comparative pigments shows the properties mentioned in a satisfactory manner.
- a main feature of modern interference pigments is the dependence of the color on the angle of incidence of the light.
- only a change in the angle of illumination allows a sufficient description of these pigments.
- Measurements with different illumination angles and constant difference angle (eg 15 °) to the respective glancing angle lead to the so-called interference line or the interference anchor in the a * b * system. It is characteristic of every interference pigment.
- the three lighting angles 25 °, 45 ° and 75 ° as well as the difference angle shifted by +/- 5 ° to the respective gloss angle are sufficient for a sufficient assessment.
- This glancing angle includes two difference angles of + 15 ° and -15 ° respectively and thus the corresponding observation angles of 120 ° and 150 °.
- the reference point is the sample horizontal and not the normal.
- the effect anchor for interfering pigments is almost horizontal on the respective effect line.
- the size of this effect anchor is now a measure of the color flop.
- the Paliocrom ® product does not form such an anchor. Rather, the effect anchor represents an extension of the effect line. A color flop is therefore virtually non-existent.
- the pigments according to the invention are different under Examples 1, 2 and 4.
- the effect anchor is distributed here to an average extent in the color space, which is why one can speak of a weak, subtle color flop.
- Variocrom ® Comparative Example 9 shows by far the greatest changes in the color locus at different viewing angles.
- the effect anchor is very pronounced and runs through the color space to a great extent, which is perceived by an independent viewer as a strong color flop.
- the color flop .DELTA.H * A is n ker as the maximum difference of the individual H * anchor values of the five armature angle 257140 ° in this invention; 457150 °; 457 120 °; 757120 ° and 75790 ° understood.
- the sixth value for 257170 ° was disregarded in this quantitative view because it is not very reproducible. Measurements are made here at an observation angle of only 10 ° against the surface plane and at such a flat angle the structure of the surface, which depends on the type of application, also makes a noticeable contribution to the measurement result.
- the reaction behavior of dusts is very strongly influenced by the grain size.
- the grain size distribution in the product is therefore closely linked to the explosion characteristics and must therefore always be taken into account when considering test results. Therefore, the beginning of explosion tests of dusts is the determination of the grain size distribution, e.g. by means of laser granulometry.
- the sample is dispersed with ultrasound in isopropanol for 300s. After briefly stirring with a magnetic stirrer, the sample is then measured using a laser granulometer.
- the D 50 value corresponds to the median value and is mostly used as a characteristic of the grain size distribution.
- the minimum ignition energy provides information about the ignitability of the whirled up dust.
- the minimum ignition energy is determined in a modified Hartmann apparatus. It is the smallest electrical energy stored in a capacitor, determined under prescribed test conditions, which is sufficient when discharging to ignite the most ignitable mixture of an explosive dust / air mixture.
- Kg This is a dust and test procedure-specific parameter that is calculated from the cubic law. In terms of numbers, it is equal to the value for the maximum temporal pressure increase in the 1 m 3 container under the test conditions specified in the guidelines VDI 3673, Blattl and VDI 2263, Blatt 1 as well as in ISO 6184/1.
- Lower explosion limit (Ex L ⁇ ): Lower limit of the concentration range in which a dust mixed with air can be caused to explode.
- Burn-off time Time it takes a powder bed of a certain volume to burn to a length of 10 cm after activation with a flame heated to 1000 ° C, whereby the activation period must not exceed 5 minutes. The determination is made according to the Manual Tests and Criteria Part III, Section 33.2.1.4 of the Federal Institute for Materials Research.
- Example 16 A nail polish formulation with the following composition was also prepared by mixing and stirring the starting components. Table 6: Composition of nail polish
- the invention therefore relates to the provision of colored effect pigments based on wet-chemical oxidized aluminum pigments. These are with a
- Metal chalcogenide layer preferably metal oxide layer, with a refractive index> 1.95 wet-chemically coated.
- a mixed layer is formed between the porous aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer and the high-index metal chalcogenide layer, preferably metal oxide layer, since the metal chalcogenide layer, preferably metal oxide layer, can at least partially penetrate into the pores of the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer.
- the effect pigments according to the invention have a soft, subtle color flop.
- the layer thickness of the aluminum oxide / hydroxide and the type and layer thickness of the high-index metal chalcogenide preferably metal oxide, a large number of colored effect pigments can be provided.
- the advantages of the effect pigments according to the invention are good hiding power combined with high gloss.
- the good hiding power also results from the fact that the oxide layer partially grows into the aluminum core during the wet chemical oxidation of the aluminum pigments. Since aluminum pigments with Thicknesses of approx. 100 - 300 nm are too thick for optically opaque behavior, by choosing suitably thick aluminum pigments, the aluminum core thickness ultimately remaining in the colored effect pigment can be optimized to a thickness of preferably 30 nm to 80 nm, thus minimizing the overall thickness of the effect pigment become. This maximizes the form factor of the pigments, which leads to good orientation in the application medium and thus to a good degree of gloss.
- the aluminum oxide / hydroxide layer produced by wet chemical oxidation also acts as a barrier layer between the aluminum core and the high-index metal chalcogenide layer, preferably a metal oxide layer. So especially at
- An aluminothermic reaction can be effectively prevented using iron oxide as a high-index metal oxide layer.
- the effect pigments according to the invention can therefore be used and produced in a manner that is safe from a safety point of view, even with high iron contents.
