- the cover cap opens in one direction away from the driver so that there can be no injury. Due to the fact that the airbag module is arranged laterally next to the steering column, the entire steering wheel can be made somewhat flatter, but there are limits to this height reduction due to the axial design of the airbag module.

- the radial extent of a steering wheel is anyway relatively large, so that the accommodation of the airbag module arranged in this way results in only a small additional space requirement.

- the expanding airbag 28 opens the flap 23 of the housing 22 at the predetermined breaking point 23a (see FIG. 2) and initially expands essentially radially. During the further expansion, the airbag 28 passes axially through the free area between the steering wheel rim 11 and the hub 13 in order to finally take up the entire space in front of the steering wheel (see FIG. 5 in this regard).
- the airbag has a hose-like section 28a and a cushion section 28b adjoining it at its end facing the diffuser.
- the tubular section 28a is eccentric, asymmetrical to the cushion section 28b.
- the filled airbag thus has the structure of an "oblique mushroom", as can be seen clearly from FIG. 6.
