Description

明 細 書 プラズマディスプレィパネル 技術分野
本発明は、 プ スプレイパネルに関し、 特にその放電特性と 蛍光体特性を安定させたプラズマディスプレイパネルに関する。 背景技術
近年、 コンピュータやテレビなどの画像表示に用いられているカラ一 表示デバイスにおいて、 プラズマディスプレイパネル (以下、 PD Pと いう) を用いたプラズマディスプレイ表示装置が、 大型で薄型軽量を実 現することのできるカラ一表示デバィスとして注目されている。
P D Pは前面板と背面板とを所定の放電空間を設けて封着し構成して いる。 前面板と背面板とには、 それぞれ電極や誘電体層、 あるいは隔壁 や蛍光体層などが有機バインダを含む構造物を焼成して形成されている PD Pの製造工程のうち、 特に前面板と背面板とを封着する封着工程 において、 封着材に用いるガラスフリット中に含まれる有機バインダな どが熱分解した不純物ガスが P D P内に拡散する。 不純物ガス成分とし ては主に水蒸気、 炭酸ガス、 炭化水素ガスであるが、 これらの不純物ガ スが PD P内の蛍光体などに吸着して、 放電特性の悪化や輝度の低下な どの問題を引き起こすことが、 例えば特開 2 0 0 3— 2 8 1 9 94号公 報や F PDテクノロジー大全((株)電子ジャーナル 2 0 0 0年 1 0月 2 5日 P P 6 1 5— 6 1 8) などに開示されている。
そのため PD P内部の不純物ガスを低減し、 放電特性の安定化、 経時 変化の抑制など、 信頼性を向上させることが重要な課題の一つとなって いる。
この目的のため、 前面板と背面板とを封着した後に、 PD P内部を加 熱しながら真空排気し、 P D P内の不純物ガスを除去した後に放電ガス を注入するという方法が広く行われている。 図 6は、 このような従来の P D P製造装置を示す断面図である。 P D P本体 6 0は前面板 6 1 と背 面板 6 2とにより構成され、 背面板 6 2には隔壁 6 3や蛍光体層 64が 形成されている。 前面板 6 1と背面板 6 2とは封着部材 7 2によりその 周囲が封着されている。 P D P本体 6 0の背面板 6 2には排気管 6 5が 接続されている。 また、 P D P本体 6 0はヒ一ター 6 6を備えた炉 6 7 内に配置されている。 排気管 6 5の他端は二方に分岐され、 その一方は 弁 6 8を介して真空ポンプ 7 0に接続され、 もう一方は弁 6 9を介して ボンべ 7 1に接続されている。
このような製造装置において、 まずヒータ一 6 6によって P D P本体 6 0を加熱しながら、 弁 6 8を開放して真空ポンプ 7 0によって P D P 本体 60内部を減圧し、 P D P内部の不純物ガスを排出する。 その後、 弁 6 8を閉じて弁 6 9を開け、 ボンべ 7 1からネオンとキセノンからな る放電ガスを PD P内部に注入し、 最後に PDP近傍の排気管 6 5をバ —ナ一などで加熱溶融し封じきることによって放電ガスが封入された P DPを完成させている。
また、 このようにして P DP本体 6 0内の不純物ガスを排出するだけ でなく、 PD P本体 6 0内部にゲッ夕一を設けて不純物ガスを吸着する 方法が特開 2 0 0 0— 3 1 1 5 8 8号公報に開示され、、排気管 6 5の内 部にゲッターを設けて不純物ガスを吸着する方法が特開平 1 1一 3 2 9 246号公報に開示されている。 しかしながら、 上記従来の方法では、 排気管を通じて放電ガスを注入 するため、 P D P内から排気された不純物ガスが排気管の内壁に吸着し、 放電ガスの供給時に放電ガスとともに再び P D P内に入ってしまい不純 物ガスの除去は不十分なものであった。 また、 P D P内部にゲッターを 設けて不純物ガスを吸着する方法では、 放電空間が隔壁によって仕切ら れているため全領域にゲッター効果を作用させることができず、 不純物 ガスの残存する領域が発生し表示むらの原因になる。 さらに、 放電中に ゲッターが加熱されて不純物ガスが再び P D P内に放出されるなどの課 題がある。 また排気管内部にゲッターを設けて不純物ガスを除去する方 法では、 ゲッターに不純成分が次第に蓄積され、 不純物ガスを除去する 能力が徐々に低下するという課題がある。
本発明は上記の課題を解決して、安定して P D P内部の清浄化を実現し, 誤放電や輝度低下を抑制して、 表示特性が向上した蛍光体劣化の少ない 信頼性の高い P D Pを実現するものである。 発明の開示
上記課題を解決するために、 本発明の P D Pは、 内部を排気するため の排気孔を有する P D Pにおいて、 排気孔の近傍の P D P内部に、 非蒸 発型のゲッ夕一を配設している。
このような構成により、 非蒸発型のゲッ夕一であるガス吸着層に、 P D P内部あるいは外部から持ち込まれる不純物ガスを吸着させることが でき、不純物ガスによる蛍光体の輝度劣化などを抑制することができる。 図面の簡単な説明

以下、 本発明の実施の形態について、 図面を参照しながら説明する。
(第 1の実施の形態)
図 1は、 本発明の第 1の実施の形態における P D Pの概略構造を示す 平面図である。 また、 図 2は、 本発明の第 1の実施の形態における P D Pの画像表示領域の一部の概略構成を示す断面斜視図である。 また、 図 3は、 本発明の第 1の実施の形態における P D Pの概略構成を示し図 2 における X方向の断面図である。
P D P 1は、 一対の前面板 2と背面板 3とが、 隔壁 4を挟んで対向し た構造である。 前面板 2は、 前面ガラス基板 5の一主面上に形成した走 査電極 6と維持電極 7とからなる表示電極 8と、 その表示電極 8を覆う ように形成した誘電体層 9と、 さらにその誘電体層 9を覆うように形成 した、 例えば M g Oによる保護層 1 0とを有する構造である。 走査電極 6と維持電極 7とは、 透明電極 6 a、 7 aにパス電極 6 b、 7 bを積層 した構造である。
背面板 3は、 背面ガラス基板 1 1の一主面上に形成したデ一夕電極 1 2と、 そのデ一夕電極 1 2を覆うように形成した誘電体層 1 3と、 誘電 体層 1 3上のデータ電極 1 2の間に相当する位置に形成した隔壁 4と、 隔壁 4間に形成した赤色、 緑色、 青色の蛍光体層 1 4 R、 1 4 G、 1 4 Bと、 排気孔 1 5とを有する構造である。
そして、 上述のように構成した前面板 2と背面板 3とを、 表示電極 8 とデータ電極 1 2とが直交するように隔壁 4を挟んで放電空間 1 6を形 成するように対向配置している。 前面板 2と背面板 3とは、 前面板 2お よび/または背面板 3の周辺部、 すなわち画像表示領域 1 7外の部分の 所定の箇所に形成した封着部材 1 8により貼り合わされて封着している ( また、 排気孔 1 5近傍の P D P 1内部の、 例えば背面板 3側に非蒸発 型ゲッタ一 1 9を配設している。 そして、 排気孔 1 5を囲って、 背面板 3の外側には排気管 2 0が接合して設けられている。 排気管 2 0は、 P D P Iの製造工程時には、 内部の真空排気や、 内部への放電ガスの封入 のために用いられ、 その後、 排気管 2 0が封止されて P D P 1として完 成する。
放電空間 1 6には、 放電ガスとして、 ヘリウム、 ネオン、 アルゴン、 キセノンのうち、 少なくとも 1種類の希ガスが 6 6 5 0 0 P a ( 5 0 0 T o r r ) 程度の圧力で封入されており、 隔壁 4によって仕切られたデ 一夕電極 1 2と表示電極 8である走査電極 6および維持電極 7との交差 部が単位発光領域である放電セル 2 1として動作する。
すなわち、 点灯させようとする放電セル 2 1において、 表示電極 8と データ電極 1 2との間、 および表示電極 8の走査電極 6と維持電極 7と の間に、 周期的な電圧を印加することで放電を発生させ、 この放電によ る紫外線で蛍光体層 1 4 R、 1 4 G、 1 4 Bを励起して可視光を発生さ せる。 そして各色の放電セル 2 1の点灯、 非点灯の組み合わせによって 画像表示が行われる。
—方、 このような PDPの排気工程、 放電ガス封入工程について図 4 を用いて説明する。 排気装置、 放電ガス封入装置は図 6に示す従来と同 様の装置を用いている。ヒーター 6 6によって PD P 1を加熱しながら、 弁 6 8を開放して真空ポンプ 7 0によって排気管 2 0を通じて PD P 1 内部を減圧し、 PD P 1内部の不純物ガスを排出する。 その後、 弁 6 8 を閉じて弁 6 9を開けて、 ボンべ 7 1から希ガスからなる放電ガスを P D P 1内部に注入し、 最後に排気管 2 0をバーナーなどで加熱溶融し封 じきることによって放電ガスが封入された P D P 1を完成させている。 このように、 ヒーター 6 6で P D P 1を加熱しながら、 真空ポンプ 7 0を作動させて P D P 1内部の不純物ガスを含む気体を排気し、 不純物 ガスの大半を PD P 1から排出することができる。 しかしながら、 従来 はこれら不純物ガスが排気管 2 0の内面に付着し、 これらの排気経路か ら完全に除去されずに残存している。 したがって、 次の封入工程でこれ らの不純物ガスが PDP 1内分に逆送されて、 微量の不純物ガスが PD P 1内部に残留し、 蛍光体の輝度劣化などに影響を与える。
特に、 不純物ガスのうち、 炭化水素ガスについては、 水の 1Z100 〜: L Z 1000程度、 炭酸ガスの 1Z10〜1Z100程度という低濃 度であっても、 緑色蛍光体 14 Gや青色蛍光体 1 4 Bの特性劣化を引き 起こすことがわかってきた。 そのメカニズムは、 緑色蛍光体として Z n2 S i 04: Mnを用いた場合には、 Z n2S i 〇4: Mnのガス吸着力が大 きいためであり、 青色蛍光体として B a M g A 110O17: E uを用いた場 合は、 炭化水素ガスが放電のエネルギーで水素と炭素に分解されて、 こ れら水素によって還元されて酸素欠陥を生じたりするからである。
以上の、 本発明の実施の形態による P D P 1の特徴的な点は、 排気孔 1 5の近傍の P D P 1の内部に、 非蒸発型のゲッ夕一 1 9を配設したこ とである。
このように構成することで、 前面板 2と背面板 3とを貼り合わせて封 着した後、 P D P 1内を排気し放電ガスを封入する際に、 従来の構成で は排気孔 1 5の近傍に吸着 ·残留している不純物ガスが、 本実施の形態 では非蒸発型のゲッター 1 9に吸着される。 そのため、 排気孔 1 5近傍 に吸着 ·残留する不純ガスを低減することができ、 誤放電や輝度低下な どを抑制することが可能となる。
なお、 非蒸発型のゲッター 1 9を、 画像表示の妨げにならないように 画像表示領域 1 7外に配設することは言うまでもない。 '
また、 本発明の実施の形態では、 ゲッター 1 9は、 排気孔 1 5近傍の P D P 1内に、 封着工程の前に配設する必要があるが、 封着工程は大気 中でガラスフリットの焼成温度にまで加熱する工程である。したがって、 この際に、 ゲッター 1 9が活性化されてしまう場合がある。 そのような 場合には、 ゲッタ一 1 9が大気を吸着してしまうこととなるので、 P D P 1内での不純物ガスを吸収するという本来の目的に対する効果が弱ま つてしまうという問題が発生する。 このような問題を回避するため、 例 えば、 封着時の温度が、 少なくともゲッ夕一 1 9が活性化される温度に まで上昇した後は、 以降の工程の雰囲気をアルゴンガスなど不活性ガス 雰囲気とすることや、 ゲッター 1 9の材料として、 封着工程時に吸着し てしまった大気を、 次の排気工程で排出するとともに、 再度活性化され るてガス吸着作用を回復することができる材料を選択することが望まし い。
なお、 以上の説明においては、 ゲッ夕一 1 9は、 排気孔 1 5近傍の、 P D P 1内部の背面板 3側に配設した例を示したが、 特にこれに限るも のではなく、 前面板 2側に配設した構成や、 両方に配設した構成などで あってもかまわない。
また、 本実施の形態では、 表示特性に影響を及ぼす大きさから、 不純 物ガスとして封着部材 1 8から排出される不純物ガスの除去を主眼とす る場合には、非蒸発型のゲッ夕一 1 9としてゼォライ トを用いるとよい。 ゼォライ トとしては、 イオン交換ゼォライ ト、 リチウムイオン交換型モ ルデナイト、 ナトリゥムイオン交換型モルデナィ 卜、 カルシウムイオン 交換型フォージャサイト (X型) 、 クリノプチ口ライトなどを用いると 効果的である。 また、 ゼォライ トは安価であるため、 ゲッター ¾用いる より安価で同様の効果を得ることが可能である。
(第 2の実施の形態)
図 5は本発明の第 2の実施の形態における P D P 1の背面板 3の平面 図である。 本実施の形態によれば、 画像表示領域 1 7と封着部材 1 8と の間の非画像表示領域 3 0の全周に非蒸発型のゲッター 1 9であるゼォ ライ トを配置している。
このように構成することにより、 ゼォライ トによる吸着面積を大きく することができ不純物ガスの除去効果をさらに高めることができる。 なお、 このような P D P内への非蒸発型ゲッターの配置構成は、 任意 の選択することが可能であり、 ゼォライ トを含むペース卜などを非画像 表示領域 3 0の任意の領域に塗布することによって容易に形成すること が可能である。 産業上の利用可能性
本発明にかかわる P D Pは、 輝度劣化がなく画像表示品質に優れた信 頼性の高い P D Pを実現し、 壁掛けテレビや大型モニタ一などのディス プレイ装置として有用である。

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . 内部を排気するための排気孔を有するプラズマディスプレイパネ ルにおいて、 前記排気孔の近傍のプラズマディスプレイパネル内部に、 非蒸発型のゲッターを配設したことを特徴とするプラズマディスプレイ パネル。
2 . 非蒸発型のゲッターがゼォライ卜であることを特徴とする請求項 1に記載のプラズマディスプレイパネル。
