Abstract

Description

ナノカーボンの製造装置およびナノ力一ボンの製造方法 技術分野
本発明は、 ナノカーボンの製造装置およびナノカーボンの製造方法に関す る。
背景技術 細
近年、 ナノカーボンの工学的応用が盛んに検討されている。 ナノカーボン とは、 カーボンナノチューブやカーボンナノホーン等に代表される、 ナノス ケールの微細構造を有する炭素物質のことをいう。 このうち、 カーボンナノ ホーンは、 グラフアイトのシートが円筒状に丸まったカーボンナノチューブ の一端が円錐形状となった管状体の構造を有しており、 その特異な性質から、 様々な技術分野への応用が期待されている。 カーボンナノホーンは、 通常、 各々の円錐部間に働くファンデルワールス力によって、 チューブを中心にし 円錐部が角 (ホーン) のように表面に突き出る形態で集合している。
カーボンナノホーン集合体は、 不活性ガス雰囲気中で原料の炭素物質 (以 下適宜グラフアイトターゲットと呼ぶ) に対してレーザー光を照射するレー ザ一蒸発法によって製造されることが報告されている (特許文献 1 )。

本発明者は、 レーザー蒸発法によりナノカーボンを安定的に大量生産する 技術について鋭意検討をおこなった。 その結果、 以下の知見が見出された。
レーザー蒸発法では、 一度レーザー光を照射されたグラフアイト夕一ゲッ トの表面は粗面化される。 これを、 円筒形のグラフアイトターゲットの側面 にレーザ一光が照射される場合を例に説明する。 図 3は円筒形のグラフアイ ト夕ーゲットを用いた場合について、この様子を例示する図である。図 3 ( c ) は 1回目にレーザー光 1 0 3が照射される際のグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の 長さ方向に垂直な断面図であり、 図 3 ( a ) はレーザー光 1 0 3照射部の拡 大図である。
図 3 ( a )、 図 3 ( c ) に示すように、 1回目にレーザ一光 1 0 3が照射さ れる側面は平滑面であるため、 プルーム 1 0 9が一定方向に生じる。 一方、 図 3 ( d ) は図 3 ( c ) において 1回以上レーザー光 1 0 3が照射された後 の側面に再度レ一ザ一光 1 0 3を照射する様子を示す図である。 図 3 ( b ) はレーザ一光 1 0 3照射部の拡大図である。 図 3 ( b )、 (d ) に示すように、 一度レーザー光 1 0 3が照射されるとグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の側面は粗 面化する。 粗面化された部位に再度レーザー光 1 0 3を照射すると、 照射位 置におけるパワー密度にばらつきが生じ、 プルーム 1 0 9の発生方向にも乱 れが生じる。
一度レーザー光 1 0 3が照射された面は粗面化されているため、 再度レー ザ一光 1 0 3を照射すると、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射角やグラフアイトロッ ド 1 0 1側面での光照射面積が変化し、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1側面にお けるレーザー光 1 0 3のパワー密度が変化してしまうことが見出された。 こ のため、 カーボンナノホーン集合体を安定的に大量生産することが困難であ つた。
このように、 従来、 カーボンナノホーン集合体を連続的、 安定的に製造す る方法が見出されておらず、 カーボンナノホーン集合体を実用化する上では、 大量生産技術の開発が重要な課題である。
本発明は上記事情に鑑みてなされたものであり、 その目的は、 カーボンナ ノホーン集合体を安定的に大量生産するための製造方法および製造装置を提 供することにある。 また、 本発明の別の目的は、 ナノカーボンを安定的に大 量生産するための製造方法および製造装置を提供することにある。
本発明によれば、 グラフアイトターゲットの表面に光照射し、 前記グラフ アイト夕ーゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノ力一ボンとして回収するとと もに、 光が照射された前記グラフアイト夕一ゲットの表面を平滑化する工程 と、 平滑化された前記グラフアイトターゲットの表面に、 再度、 光照射し、 前記グラフアイトターゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノカーボンとして回 収する工程と、 を含むことを特徴とするナノカーボンの製造方法が提供され る。
また本発明によれば、 グラフアイトターゲットの表面に光を照射するため の光源と、 光を照射された前記グラフアイト夕ーゲットの表面を平滑化する ための表面処理手段と、 光の照射によりグラフアイトターゲットから蒸発し た炭素蒸気をナノカーボンとして回収するための回収手段と、 を備えること を特徴とするナノ力一ボンの製造装置が提供される。
本発明において、 「平滑化」 とは、 処理前に比べてグラフアイトターゲット の表面の凹凸の程度を相対的に小さくする処理をいう。 本発明に係るナノ力 —ボンの製造方法によれば、 光照射によりグラフアイトターゲット表面は粗 面化するが、 これを平滑化し、 再度平滑化された部位に光照射を行う。 した がって、 光が照射されるグラフアイトターゲット表面は常に平滑な状態に維 持される。 したがって、 グラフアイトターゲット表面の照射部位におけるパ ヮー密度が一定に保たれるため、 ナノカーボンを安定的に大量合成すること が可能となる。 なお、 本明細書において、 「パワー密度」 とは、 グラフアイト 夕ーゲット表面に実際に照射される光のパワー密度、 すなわちグラフアイト ターゲット表面の光照射部位におけるパワー密度を指すものとする。
本発明によれば、 円筒形のグラフアイト夕 ゲッ卜を中心軸周りに回転さ せながら、 前記グラフアイトターゲットの表面に光照射し、 前記グラフアイ ト夕ーゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノカーボンとして回収するとともに、 光が照射された前記グラフアイトターゲッ卜の表面を平滑化する工程と、 前 記グラフアイトターゲットを中心軸周りに回転させながら、 平滑化された前 記表面に、 再度、 光照射し、 前記グラフアイトターゲットから蒸発した炭素 蒸気をナノカーボンとして回収する工程と、 を含むことを特徴とするナノ力 一ボンの製造方法が提供される。 また本発明によれば、 円筒状のグラフアイトターゲットを保持するととも に該グラフアイトタ一ゲットを中心軸周りに回転させる夕一ゲット保持手段 と、 前記グラフアイトターゲットの表面に光を照射するための光源と、 光を 照射された前記グラフアイトターゲットの表面を平滑化するための表面処理 手段と、 光の照射により前記グラフアイトターゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気 をナノカーボンとして回収するための回収手段と、 を備えることを特徴とす るナノカーボンの製造装置が提供される。
本発明によれば、 円筒形のグラフアイト夕一ゲットが中心軸周りに回転さ れるため、たとえば光照射により粗面化された側面が平滑化される。そして、 平滑化された側面に再度光照射される。 このように、 円筒形のグラフアイト ターゲットを回転させながら光照射と平滑化の工程を行うことにより、 ナノ カーボンを連続的に効率よく大量生産することが可能となる。
なお、 本発明において、 「中心軸」 とは、 円筒形のグラフアイトターゲット の長さ方向に垂直な断面中心を通り、 長さ方向に水平な軸のことをいう。 ま た、 円筒形のグラフアイトターゲットとして、 たとえばグラフアイトロッド が利用可能である。 ここで、 「グラフアイ小ロッド」 とは、 ロッド状に成形さ れたグラフアイトターゲットのことをいう。 ロッド状であれば、 中空、 中実 の別は問わない。 また、 光が照射される円筒形のグラフアイトターゲットの 表面は、 上述のように、 円筒形のグラフアイトターゲットの側面であること が好ましい。 ここで、 「円筒形のグラフアイトターゲットの側面」 とは、 円筒 の長さ方向に平行な曲面 (円筒面) のことを指す。
本発明によれば、 平板状のグラフアイト夕一ゲッ卜を保持するとともに該 グラフアイトターゲットを表面の法線方向に 1 8 0度回転させるターゲット 保持手段と、 前記グラフアイト夕一ゲッ卜の表面に光を照射するための光源 と、 光を照射された前記グラフアイトターゲットの表面を平滑化するための 表面処理手段と、 光の照射により前記グラフアイトターゲットから蒸発した 炭素蒸気をナノカーボンとして回収するための回収手段と、 を備えることを 特徴とするナノカーボンの製造装置が提供される。 また、 本発明によれば、 平板状のグラフアイトターゲットの表面に光照射 し、 前記グラフアイトタ一ゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノカーボンとし て回収する工程と、 光が照射された前記グラフアイトターゲットを、 前記表 面の法線方向に 1 8 0度回転させた後、 光が照射された前記グラフアイトタ 一ゲットの前記表面を平滑化する工程と、 平滑化された前記表面に、 再度、 光照射し、 前記グラフアイトタ一ゲッ卜から蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノカーボ ンとして回収する工程と、 を含むことを特徴とするナノ力一ボンの製造方法 が提供される。
本発明においては、 平板状のグラフアイトターゲットの一の面に光照射を 行った後、 これを反転させて他方の面に光照射を行う。 そして、 他の面に光 照射をしつつ、 一の面を平滑化することができる。 平滑化された一の面はグ ラフアイトターゲットの再度の反転の後、 再度の光照射に供される。 再度の 光照射の間、 他の面が平滑化される。 このように、 本発明においては、 平板 状グラフアイト夕ーゲットにおける光照射面を反転させながら光照射を行い、 一の面に光を照射している間に他の面の平滑化を行うことができるように構 成されている。 このため、 平板状のグラフアイトターゲットを用いて所望の 性状のナノカーボンを高い純度で効率よく安定的に製造することができる。 本発明のナノカーボンの製造方法において、 前記グラフアイトターゲット の表面に光照射する工程および該グラファイトタ一ゲット表面に再度光照射 する工程で、 光の照射位置を移動させながら光照射することができる。
また本発明のナノカーボンの製造装置において、 前記光源に対する前記グ ラファイト夕ーゲットの相対的位置を移動させる移動手段をさらに備えるこ とができる。 移動手段として、 たとえば、 円筒形のグラフアイトターゲット を中心軸周りに回転させながら光照射する場合、 グラフアイト夕ーゲットの 長さ方向の照射位置を移動させるようにグラフアイトターゲットの位置を移 動させる態様を採用することができる。
こうすることにより、 光照射、 平滑化、 再度の光照射の工程をより一層効 率よく連続的に行うことができるため、 ナノカーボンを効率よく大量生産す ることができる。
たとえば本発明によれば、 グラフアイトターゲットをチャンバ一内に設置 し、 前記グラフアイトターゲットの表面に対し、 照射位置を移動させながら 光照射し、 前記グラフアイトターゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノカーボ ンとして回収するとともに光が照射された前記グラフアイトターゲットの表 面を平滑化する工程と、 前記チャンバ一から前記グラフアイトターゲットを 取り出すことなく、 平滑化された前記グラフアイトターゲットの表面に対し、 照射位置を移動させながら再度、 光照射し、 前記グラフアイト夕一ゲットか ら蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノカーボンとして回収する工程と、 を含むことを特 徴とするナノカーボンの製造方法が提供される。
本発明のナノカーボンの製造方法において、 光を照射された表面を平滑化 する前記工程は、 前記グラフアイトターゲットの表面の一部を除去する工程 を含むことができる。
また本発明のナノ力一ボンの製造装置において、 前記表面処理手段は、 前 記光の照射位置と異なる箇所において前記グラフアイト夕ーゲットの表面の 一部を除去することができる。
こうすることにより、 光照射により粗面化したグラフアイトターゲット表 面を、 効率よく平滑化することができる。 グラフアイトターゲット表面を平 滑化することができれば、 その一部を除去する方法に特に制限はないが、 た とえば、 切削、 研削、 研磨などが挙げられる。
本発明のナノカーボンの製造装置において、 前記表面処理手段にて発生す る前記グラフアイトターゲットの屑を回収するための屑回収手段をさらに備 えることができる。 こうすることにより、 グラフアイトターゲット表面の切 削化により生じた切削屑を、 生成したナノカーボンと効率よく分離し、 回収 することが可能となる。
本発明のナノカーボンの製造方法において、 光照射する前記工程は、 レー ザ一光を照射する工程を含むことができる。 こうすることにより、 光の波長 および方向を一定とすることができるため、 グラフアイトタ一ゲット表面へ の光照射条件を、 精度良く制御することができる。 したがって、 所望のナノ カーボンを選択的に製造することが可能となる。
本発明のナノカーボンの製造方法において、 ナノカーボンを回収する前記 工程は、 カーボンナノホーン集合体を回収する工程を含むことができる。 また、 本発明のナノ力一ボンの製造装置において、 前記ナノ力一ボンは力 一ボンナノホーン集合体とすることができる。
こうすることにより、 カーボンナノホーン集合体の大量合成を効率よく行 うことができる。 本発明において、 カーボンナノホーン集合体を構成する力 一ボンナノホーンは、 単層カーボンナノホーンとすることもできるし、 多層 力一ボンナノホーンとすることもできる。
また、 ナノカーボンとしてカーボンナノチューブを回収することもできる。 以上説明したように本発明によれば、 光が照射されたグラフアイト夕一ゲ ットの表面を平滑化し、 平滑化されたグラフアイトターゲットの表面に、 再 度、 光照射し、 グラフアイトターゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノカーボ ンとして回収することにより、 ナノカーボンを安定的に大量生産することが できる。 また本発明によれば、 カーボンナノホーン集合体を安定的に大量生 産することができる。 図面の簡単な説明

以下、 ナノ力一ボンが力一ボンナノホーン集合体である場合を例に、 本発 明に係るナノ力一ボンの製造装置および製造方法の好ましい実施の形態につ いて説明する。
(第一の実施形態)

レーザー光 1 0 3照射の夕一ゲットとなる固体炭素単体物質として、 ダラ ファイトロッド 1 0 1を用いる。 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1は回転装置 1 1 5に固定されており、 中心軸周りに軸として回転可能である。 またグラファ イトロッド 1 0 1は位置移動も可能である。 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の側 面にレーザー光源 1 1 1からレーザ一光 1 0 3が照射される。 図 1では、 グ ラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の側面の頂部よりも少し下がった位置にレーザー光 1 0 3が照射され、 プルーム 1 0 9は、 照射面の法線方向に発生する。 図 1 の装置では、 プルーム 1 0 9の発生方向真上に近い方向にナノカーボン回収 チャンバ一 1 1 9が設けられているため、 生成したカーボンナノホーン集合 体 1 1 7はナノカーボン回収チャンバ一 1 1 9に回収される。 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1は回転装置 1 1 5により回転しているため、 レ 一ザ一光 1 0 3が照射された領域は、 切削バイト 1 0 5がグラフアイトロッ ド 1 0 1に当接する箇所に導かれ、 この箇所で切削され側面が平滑化される。 切削バイト 1 0 5によるグラフアイ卜ロッド 1 0 1の切削屑は、 切削グラフ アイト回収チャンバ一 1 2 1に回収され、 生成したカーボンナノホーン集合 体 1 1 7と分離される。
図 1の装置では、 レーザー光源 1 1 1および切削バイト 1 0 5の位置は固 定されている。 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1がその中心軸周りに回転するため、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射位置が、 速やかに切削バイト 1 0 5に当接する位置 へと移動し、 切削バイト 1 0 5によって平滑化される。 このとき、 グラファ イトロッド 1 0 1がその長軸方向に移動することにより、 レーザ一光 1 0 3 の照射位置が変化する。 切削バイト 1 0 5による切削部位も、 照射位置の変 化に対応して変化する。
この様子を図 2に示す。 図 2は、 図 1のナノ力一ボンの製造装置における グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1とレーザー光 1 0 3、 切削バイト 1 0 5の位置関 係を示す図である。 図 2に示すように、 レーザー光 1 0 3は、 照射位置とグ ラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の長さ方向に垂直な断面中心とを結ぶ線分と、 水平 面とのなす角、 すなわち本実施形態における照射角が一定となるように照射 される。 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射角を一定に保ちながら、 グラフアイトロッ ド 1 0 1をその長さ方向にスライドさせることにより、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の長さ方向にレーザー光 1 0 3を一定のパワー密度で連続的に照射す ることができる。
このときの照射角は 3 0 ° 以上 6 0 ° 以下とすることが好ましい。 なお上 述のように、 本明細書において、 照射角とは、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射位置 におけるグラフアイトターゲッ卜の表面に対する垂線とレーザ一光 1 0 3と のなす角のことである。 円筒形のグラフアイトターゲットを用いる場合、 照 射角は、 図 2、 図 3 ( c ) および図 3 ( d ) に示すように、 グラフアイト口 ッド 1 0 1の長さ方向に垂直な断面において、 照射位置と円の中心とを結ぶ 線分と、 水平面とのなす角となる。
この照射角を 3 0 ° 以上とすることにより、 照射するレーザー光 1 0 3が 反射して戻り光が発生するのを抑制することができる。 また、 発生するプル ーム 1 0 9がレーザー光窓 1 1 3を通じてレンズ 1 2 3へ直撃することが防 止される。 このため、 レンズ 1 2 3を保護し、 またカーボンナノホーン集合 体 1 1 7のレーザー光窓 1 1 3への付着防止に有効である。 よって、 グラフ アイトロッド 1 0 1に照射される光のパワー密度を安定化し、 カーボンナノ ホーン集合体 1 1 7を高い収率で安定的に製造することができる。
また、 レーザー光 1 0 3を 6 0 ° 以下で照射することにより、 ァモルファ スカーボンの生成を抑制し、 生成物中のカーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7の 割合、 すなわちカーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7の収率を向上させることが できる。 また、 照射角は 4 5 ° とすることが特に好ましい。 4 5 ° で照射す ることにより、 生成物中のカーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7の割合をより一 層向上させることができる。
また、 ナノカーボン製造装置 3 4 7では、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の側 面にレーザー光 1 0 3を照射する構成となっているため、 レンズ 1 2 3の位 置を固定した状態で側面の照射角度を変えることにより容易に変えることが できる。 このため、 パワー密度を可変とし、 確実に調節することができる。 たとえば、 レンズ 1 2 3の位置を固定した場合において、 たとえば、 照射角 を 3 0 ° とすれば、 パワー密度を高くすることができる。 また、 たとえば照 射角度を 6 0 ° とすることにより、 パワー密度を低く制御できる。
また、 図 3を用いて前述したように、 一度レーザー光 1 0 3が照射される とグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の側面は粗面化する。 粗面化された部位に再度 レーザー光 1 0 3を照射すると、 照射位置におけるパワー密度にばらつきが 生じ、 プルーム 1 0 9の発生方向にも乱れが生じる。 このように、 一度レ一 ザ一光 1 0 3が照射された面に再度レーザー光 1 0 3を照射すると、 照射位 置におけるパワー密度を一定とすることができないため、 カーボンナノホー ン集合体 1 1 7の収率が低下する。 そこで、 図 1の装置においては、 図 2に示すように、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の下部に切削バイト 1 0 5が設けられている。 レーザー光 1 0 3の照 射部位よりも下部に切削バイト 1 0 5を配置すると、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照 射されたグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1側面が順次回転されて切削バイト 1 0 5 の位置に移動し、 切削されるため、 照射位置を連続的に平滑化することがで きる。 このため、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射面は、 常に平滑面となる。 よって、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1を製造チャンバ一 1 0 7から取り出して平滑化の 処理を行わなくても、 レーザー光 1 0 3照射部位のパワー密度を一定とする ことができる。 したがって、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1を製造チャンパ一 1 0 7に設置したままでレーザー光 1 0 3を連続的に照射することが可能とな り、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を効率よく大量生産することができる。 また、 図 2のようにレーザー光 1 0 3を照射すると、 プルーム 1 0 9は上 方に生じるため、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7は上方に向かって生成す る。 したがって、 切削バイト 1 0 5をグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の下部に設 けておけば、 生成したカーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7と切削バイト 1 0 5 によって切削された原料であるグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の切削屑とを効率 よく分離することが可能となる。
なお、 図 2のように、 切削バイト 1 0 5の設置部位は、 レーザ一光 1 0 3 の照射部位から、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1が長軸に平行に移動する方向に 対して等しいかまたはやや後方となる位置に設けることが好ましい。 こうし ておけば、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の側面がレーザー光 1 0 3の照射前に 切削されてしまうという不具合を確実に防止することができる。
以上のように、 図 1のナノ力一ボンの製造装置においては、 円筒形のダラ ファイトロッド 1 0 1の側面に照射されるレーザー光 1 0 3の部位が連続的 に変化し、 かつ照射部位が回転することによって切削パイト 1 0 5によって 平滑化されるため、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を連続的に製造するこ とが可能である。 また、 グラフアイトターゲットであるグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1を繰り返しレーザ一光 1 0 3照射に供することができるため、 グラフ アイトロッド 10 1を有効利用することが可能である。
次に、 図 1の製造装置を用いたカーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7の製造方 法について具体的に説明する。
図 1の製造装置において、 グラフアイトロッド 10 1として、 高純度ダラ ファイト、 たとえば丸棒状焼結炭素や圧縮成形炭素等を用いることができる。 また、 レーザ一光 103として、 たとえば、 高出力 C02ガスレーザ一光な どのレーザー光を用いる。 なお、 レーザ一光窓 1 1 3およびレンズ 1 23の 材料は、 使用するレーザー光 103の種類に応じて適宜選択される。 たとえ ば、 C02ガスレーザ一光を用いる場合、 レーザー光窓 1 13およびレンズ 1 23の材料を Z n S eとすることができる。
レ一ザ一光 1 03のグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1への照射は、 A r、 He等 の希ガスをはじめとする反応不活性ガス雰囲気、 たとえば 1 03P a以上 105 P a以下の雰囲気中で行う。 また、 製造チャンバ一 1 07内を予めたとえば 1 0— 2P a以下に減圧排気した後、 不活性ガス雰囲気とすることが好ましい。 また、 グラフアイトロッド 10 1の側面におけるレーザ一光 1 03のパヮ —密度がほぼ一定、 となるようにレーザ一光 1 03の出力、 スポット径、 お よび照射角を調節することが好ましい。
また、 グラフアイトロッド 10 1の側面におけるレーザー光 1 03のパヮ 一密度がほぼ一定、たとえば 5 kW/ cm2以上 30 kWZcm2以下、たとえ ば 20 ± 10 kWZcm2となるようにレーザー光 103の出力、スポット径、 および照射角を調節することが好ましい。
レーザー光 103の出力はたとえば 1 kW以上 50 kW以下とする。 また、 レーザー光 1 03のパルス幅はたとえば 0. 02秒以上、 好ましくは 0. 5 秒以上と、 さらに好ましくは 0. 7 5秒以上とする。 こうすることにより、 グラフアイトロッド 10 1の表面に照射されるレーザー光 1 03の累積エネ ルギーを充分確保することができる。 このため、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を効率よく製造することができる。 また、 レーザー光 1 03のパルス 幅はたとえば 1. 5秒以下とし、 好ましくは 1. 25秒以下とする。 こうす ることにより、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の表面が過剰に加熱されることに より表面のエネルギー密度が変動し、 カーボンナノホーン集合体の収率が低 下するのを抑制することができる。 レーザ一光 1 0 3のパルス幅は、 0 . 7 5秒以上 1秒以下とすることがさらに好ましい。 こうすれば、 カーボンナノ ホーン集合体 1 1 7の生成率および収率をともに向上させることができる。 また、 レーザ一光 1 0 3照射における休止幅は、 たとえば 0 . 1秒以上と することができ、 0 . 2 5秒以上とすることが好ましい。 こうすることによ り、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1表面の過加熱をより一層確実に抑制すること ができる。
また、 照射時のレ一ザ一光 1 0 3のグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1側面へのス ポット径は、 たとえば 0 . 5 mm以上 5 mm以下とすることができる。 また、 好ましい照射角度は、 図 2を用いて前述した通りである。
レーザー光 1 0 3照射時に、 回転装置 1 1 5によってグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1を円周方向に一定速度で回転させる。 回転数はたとえば 1 r p m以上 2 0 r p m以下とする。
また、 レーザー光 1 0 3のスポットを、 たとえば 0 . O l mmZ s e c以 上 5 5 mm/ s e c以下の速度 (周速度) で移動させることが好ましい。 た とえば、 直径 1 0 O mmのグラフアイトターゲットの表面にレーザー光 1 0 3を照射する場合には、 回転装置 1 1 5によって直径 1 0 O mmのグラファ イトロッド 1 0 1を円周方向に一定速度で回転させ、 回転数をたとえば 0 . 0 1 r p m以上 1 0 r p m以下とすると、 上記周速度を実現できる。 なお、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の回転方向に特に制限はないが、 レーザ一光 1 0 3から遠ざかる方向に回転させることが好ましい。 こうすることにより、 力 一ボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7をより一層確実に回収することができる。 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の下部に設ける切削バイト 1 0 5は、 グラファ イトロッド 1 0 1側面を平滑化することができる構成であれば特に制限はな く、 種々の形状、 材質のものを用いることができる。 また、 図 1の製造装置 では切削バイト 1 0 5を用いているが、 これに代わり種々の切削部材、 また たとえばやすり等の研磨部材やたとえば、 研磨紙 (サンドペーパー) が上面 に設けられたローラ一を用いることができる。 このとき、 たとえば研磨紙の 設けられた口一ラーの上面が面に直交する中心軸周りに回転し、 グラフアイ トロッド 1 0 1の円筒面を平滑化する構成とすることができる。 部材などを 用いてもよい。 また、 切削グラフアイト回収チャンバ一 1 2 1を設ける位置 には、 切削バイト 1 0 5による切削屑を力一ボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7と 分離して回収することができる位置であれば特に制限はない。
図 1の装置では、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射によって得られたすす状物質が ナノカーボン回収チャンバ一 1 1 9に回収される構成となっているが、 適当 な基板上に堆積して回収することや、 ダストバッグによる微粒子回収の方法 によって回収することもできる。 また、 不活性ガスを反応容器内で流通させ て、 不活性ガスの流れによりすす状物質を回収することもできる。
図 1の装置を用いて得られたすす状物質は、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を主として含み、 たとえば、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7が 9 O w t %以上含まれる物質として回収される。
図 5は、 本実施形態に係るナノカーボン製造装置の別の構成を示す図であ る。 図 5のナノ力一ボン製造装置 3 3 3の基本的な構成は図 1の装置と同じ であるが、 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の側面におけるレーザー光 1 0 3の照 射位置が異なる。 これによりプルーム 1 0 9の発生方向が異なるため、 搬送 管 1 4 1の延在方向が異なる。 さらに、 ナノカーボン製造装置 3 3 3は、 不 活性ガス供給部 1 2 7、 流量計 1 2 9、 真空ポンプ 1 4 3、 および圧力計 1 4 5を備える。
レーザ一光 1 0 3を照射すると、 プルーム 1 0 9は、 レーザ一光 1 0 3の 照射位置におけるグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の接線に垂直方向に発生する。 ナノカーボン製造装置 3 3 3では、 レーザー光 1 0 3がグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の側面に照射され、 照射角が 4 5 ° となっている。 そして、 鉛直に対 して 4 5 ° をなす方向に搬送管 1 4 1が設けられている。 このため、 グラフ アイトロッド 1 0 1の接線に垂直方向に搬送管 1 4 1が設けられた構成とな つている。 よって、 効率よく炭素蒸気をナノカーボン回収チャンバ一 1 1 9 に導き、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を回収することができる。 また、 照射角が 4 5 ° であるため、 上述したように、 戻り光の発生が抑制され、 力 一ボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を高い収率で安定的に製造することができる。
(第二の実施形態)
第一の実施形態では円筒形のグラフアイトタ一ゲットを用いたが、 平板状 のグラフアイトターゲットを用いることもできる。 図 6は、 本実施形態に係 るナノカーボン製造装置 3 4 1の構成を模式的に示す断面図である。
ナノカーボン製造装置 3 1の基本構成は図 1および図 5の装置と同様で あるが、 回転装置 3 3 7およびフライス 3 3 9を有する点が異なる。
回転装置 3 3 7は、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5を保持する。 そして、 グラファ イト板 3 3 5を面方向に移動させるとともに、 照射面を反転させる回転機構 を備えている。
フライス 3 3 9は、 所定の位置で長軸まわりに回転し、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5の表面を切削する。 フライス 3 3 9をグラフアイト板 3 3 5の下部に設 けておけば、 生成したカーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7とフライス 3 3 9に よって切削された切削屑とを効率よく分離することができる。
なお、 フライス 3 3 9の設置部位は、 たとえば、 レーザ一光 1 0 3の照射 部位からグラフアイト板 3 3 5が面方向に移動する方向に対して等しいかま たはやや後方となる位置に設けることができる。 こうすれば、 レーザ一光 1 0 3を照射する際に確実にグラフアイト板 3 3 5の裏面を平滑化することが できる。
グラフアイト板 3 3 5は、 その両面をレーザー光 1 0 3の照射面として提 供できればよく、 たとえば平板状またはシート状のグラフアイトを用いるこ とができる。 グラフアイト板 3 3 5は、 その表面の幅が厚みよりも大きい形 状とすることができる。 こうすれば、 表面に効率よくレーザ一光 1 0 3を照 射することができるため、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を効率よく生産 することができる。 また、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5を矩形とすることができる。 こうすれば、 グ ラファイト板 3 3 5の移動方向の調節を容易に行うことができる。 たとえば、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5を矩形の長辺に平行な方向に直線移動させながらレー ザ一光 1 0 3を照射して、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を効率よく生産 することができる。
図 7 ( a ) 〜図 7 ( c ) は、 ナノカーボン製造装置 3 4 1を用いたカーボ ンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7の製造の手順を説明する図である。 まず、 グラフ アイ卜板 3 3 5を表面に水平方向に移動させながら、 レーザー光 1 0 3を照 射する (図 7 ( a ) )。 たとえば、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5を長手方向に移動さ せながら、 第一の面 3 4 3に照射する。 このとき、 レーザー光 1 0 3は製造 チャンパ一 1 0 7内の所定の位置に照射されるため、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5 を水平移動させることにより、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射位置を移動させなが ら第一の面 3 4 3にレーザー光 1 0 3を照射することができる。 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射により、 第一の面 3 4 3が粗面化される。
次に、 回転装置 3 3 7によりグラフアイト板 3 3 5を 1 8 0 ° 回転させる (図 7 ( b ) )。 こうすると、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射面が反転し、 レーザ一 光 1 0 3の照射面として平滑な第二の面 3 4 5が提供される。 このとき、 レ 一ザ一光 1 0 3の照射は休止する。
そして、 第二の面 3 4 5にレーザ一光 1 0 3を照射する。 また、 同時に、 フライス 3 3 9を回転させて、 第一の面 3 4 3を平滑化する。 フライス 3 3 9は製造チャンパ一 1 0 7内の所定の位置で回転するため、 第二の面 3 4 5 の面方向にグラフアイト板 3 3 5を移動させながらレーザ一光 1 0 3を照射 することにより、 フライス 3 3 9による切削位置を移動させながら第一の面 • 3 4 3を切削することができる。 フライス 3 3 9によるグラフアイト板 3 3 5の切削屑は、 切削グラフアイト回収チャンバ一 1 2 1に回収され、 生成し たナノカーボン回収チャンパ一 1 1 9に回収されるカーボンナノホーン集合 体 1 1 7と分離される。
本実施形態において、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射条件は第一の実施形態と同 様とすることができる。 また、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5の表面にレーザー光 1 0 3を照射しながら、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5を並進移動させるときの移動速 度は、 たとえば 0 . 4 mmZm i n以上 4 . 8 mm/m i n以下とする。 4 . 8 mm/m i n以下とすることにより、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5の表面に確実 にレーザー光 1 0 3を照射することができる。 また、 0 . A mmZm i n以 上とすることにより、 効率よくカーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を製造する ことができる。
ナノカーボン製造装置 3 4 1では、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射面を反転させ ることが可能であり、 グラフアイト板 3 3 5の二つの面に交互にレーザー光 1 0 3を照射する。 また、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射後、 フライス 3 3 9で表 面を平滑化した後再度の照射に供する。 このため、 照射面におけるレーザー 光 1 0 3のパワー密度のぶれを抑制することができる。 よって、 所定の性質 のカーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を高い収率で安定的に製造することがで さる。
以上の実施形態に係るナノカーボン製造装置を用いることにより、 レーザ —光 1 0 3が照射されたグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1側面を平滑化し、 再度の レーザ一光 1 0 3照射に供することができるため、 カーボンナノチューブの 製造においてもこれを安定的に大量生産することが可能である。
なお、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7を構成するカーボンナノホーンの 形状、 径の大きさ、 長さ、 先端部の形状、 炭素分子やカーボンナノホーン間 の間隔等は、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射条件などによって様々に制御すること が可能である。
以上、 本発明を実施形態に基づき説明した。 これらの実施形態は例示であ り様々な変形例が可能なこと、 またそうした変形例も本発明の範囲にあるこ とは当業者に理解されるところである。
たとえば、 以上の実施形態に記載のナノカーボン製造装置は、 レーザー光
1 0 3の照射、 グラフアイトターゲットの移動もしくは回転、 または切削パ ィトゃフライスの駆動を制御する制御部を有していてもよい。 また、 以上においてはナノカーボンとしてカーボンナノホーン集合体を製 造する場合を例に説明したが、 以上の実施形態に係る製造装置を用いて製造 されるナノカーボンはカーボンナノホーン集合体には限定されない。
たとえば、 図 1の製造装置を用いてカーボンナノチューブを製造すること もできる。 カーボンナノチューブを製造する場合、 グラフアイトロッド 10 1の側面におけるレーザー光 103のパワー密度がほぼ一定、 たとえば 50 ± 10 kW/cm2となるようにレーザー光 103の出力、 スポット径、 およ び照射角を調節することが好ましい。
また、 グラフアイトロッド 101には、 触媒金属をたとえば 0. 0001 w t %以上 5 %以下添加する。 金属触媒として、 たとえば N i、 Coなどの 金属を用いることができる。
(実施例)
本実施例では、 図 1に示す構成のナノ力一ボンの製造装置を用いてカーボ ンナノホーン集合体 117を作製した。
グラフアイトロッド 101として直径 100mm、 長さ 250 mmの焼結 丸棒炭素を用い、 これを製造チャンバ一 107内の回転装置 115に固定し た。製造チャンパ一 107内を 10— 3P aにまで減圧排気した後、 A rガスを 105P aの雰囲気圧となるように導入した。 次いで、 室温中にてグラフアイ トロッド 101を回転数 6 r pmで回転させ、 また 0. 3mmZs e cにて 水平移動させながら、 その側面にレ一ザ一光 103を照射した。
レーザ一光 103には高出力の C〇2レーザー光を用い、 その出力は 3〜 5 kW、 波長 10. 6 ΠΙ、 パルス幅 5 s e cの連続発振とした。 また、 ダラ ファイトロッド 101の長さ方向に垂直な断面において、 照射位置と円の中 心とを結ぶ線分と、 水平面とのなす角、 すなわち照射角を 45° とし、 ダラ ファイトロッド 101側面でのパワー密度は 20 kWZcm2土 10 kWZc m2とした。
得られたすす状物質について TEM観察を行った。 また、 ラマン分光法に より、 1350 cm—1と 1590 cm の強度を比較し、 カーボンナノホーン 集合体 1 1 7の収率を算出した。
次に、 切削バイト 1 0 5によって平滑化されたグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1 側面に 2回目のレーザー光 1 0 3照射を行い、 上述の方法によりカーボンナ ノホーン集合体 1 1 7の収率を求めた。 さらに、 2回目の照射を行った部位 にさらに 3度目の照射を行い、 同様に生成物の評価を行った。
得られたすす状物質を透過型電子顕微鏡(T E M)により観察したところ、 1回目〜 3回目のいずれの照射においても、 カーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7が支配的に生成しており、 その粒子径は、 8 0 n m以上 1 2 0 n m以下の 範囲であった。 また、 1回目〜 3回目の照射後に得られた物質全体中の力一 ボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7の収率をラマン分光法によって求めたところ、 図 4に示すように、 いずれも 9 0 %以上の高収率となった。
したがって、 本実施例では、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射されたグラフアイト ロッド 1 0 1側面を切削バイト 1 0 5にて切削し、 再度レーザ一光 1 0 3を 照射することにより、 高い収率でカーボンナノホーン集合体 1 1 7が得られ た。 またこの工程は、 カーボンナノホーン集合体の大量生産に好適な連続ェ 程であることが明らかになった。
(比較例)
図 1の装置において、 切削バイト 1 0 5を用いずにカーボンナノホーン集 合体 1 1 7の製造を行った。 グラフアイトロッド 1 0 1の側面を切削バイト 1 0 5で切削しないことの他は、 実施例と同様にして行った。
その結果、 図 4に示すように、 同一のグラフアイトロッド 1 0 1に対する レーザ一光 1 0 3の照射回数が増すにつれ、 カーボンナノホーン集合体の収 率は顕著に減少した。 そこで、 レーザー光 1 0 3を 1回照射した後の側面を 肉眼で観察したところ、 レーザー光 1 0 3の照射部位に深さ約 3 mmの凹部 が形成されており、 凹部の側面も照射前の側面に比べて粗面化していた。 し たがって、 凹部の形成された側面に再度レーザー光 1 0 3が照射されたため、 レーザー光 1 0 3の入射角やパワー密度が変化するため、 カーボンナノホー ン集合体 1 1 7の収率が減少したと考えられる。

Claims

請 求 の 範 囲
1 . グラフアイトターゲットの表面に光を照射するための光源と、
光を照射された前記グラフアイトタ一ゲットの表面を平滑化するための表 面処理手段と、
光の照射によりグラフアイトターゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノ力一 ボンとして回収するための回収手段と、
を備えることを特徴とするナノカーボンの製造装置。
2 . 円筒状のグラフアイトターゲットを保持するとともに該グラファイト 夕一ゲットを中心軸周りに回転させる夕一ゲット保持手段と、
前記グラフアイトターゲットの表面に光を照射するための光源と、 光を照射された前記グラフアイ卜夕ーゲットの表面を平滑化するための表 面処理手段と、
光の照射により前記グラフアイト夕一ゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノ カーボンとして回収するための回収手段と、
を備えることを特徴とするナノカーボンの製造装置。
3 . 平板状のグラフアイトターゲットを保持するとともに該グラファイト ターゲットを表面の法線方向に 1 8 0度回転させる夕一ゲット保持手段と、 前記グラフアイトタ一ゲットの表面に光を照射するための光源と、 光を照射された前記グラフアイトタ一ゲットの表面を平滑化するための表 面処理手段と、
光の照射により前記グラフアイトターゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノ カーボンとして回収するための回収手段と、
を備えることを特徴とするナノ力一ボンの製造装置。
4 . 請求項 1乃至 3いずれかに記載のナノカーボンの製造装置において、 前記光源に対する前記グラフアイトターゲットの相対的位置を移動させる移 動手段をさらに備えることを特徴とするナノカーボンの製造装置。
5。 請求項 1乃至 4いずれかに記載のナノカーボンの製造装置において、 前記表面処理手段は、 前記光の照射位置と異なる箇所において前記グラファ ィトターゲットの表面の一部を除去することを特徴とするナノカーボンの製
6 . 請求項 5に記載のナノ力一ボンの製造装置において、 前記表面処理手 段にて発生する前記グラフアイト夕ーゲットの屑を回収するための屑回収手 段をさらに備えることを特徴とするナノ力一ボンの製造装置。
7 · 請求項 1乃至 6いずれかに記載のナノカーボンの製造装置において、 前記ナノカーボンがカーボンナノホーン集合体であることを特徴とするナノ カーボンの製造装置。
8 . グラフアイトターゲットの表面に光照射し、 前記グラフアイトタ一ゲ ットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノ力一ボンとして回収するとともに、 光が照 射された前記グラフアイ卜ターゲットの表面を平滑化する工程と、
平滑化された前記表面に、 再度、 光照射し、 前記グラフアイ卜ターゲット から蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノ力一ボンとして回収する工程と、
を含むことを特徴とするナノ力一ボンの製造方法。
9 . 円筒形のグラフアイトターゲットを中心軸周りに回転させながら、 前 記グラフアイトタ一ゲッ卜の表面に光照射し、 前記グラフアイトタ一ゲット から蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノカーボンとして回収するとともに、 光が照射さ れた前記グラフアイトタ一ゲットの表面を平滑化する工程と、
前記グラフアイトターゲットを中心軸周りに回転させながら、 平滑化され た前記表面に、 再度、 光照射し、 前記グラフアイトターゲットから蒸発した 炭素蒸気をナノカーボンとして回収する工程と、
を含むことを特徴とするナノ力一ボンの製造方法。
1 0 . 平板状のグラフアイトターゲットの表面に光照射し、 前記グラファ ィトターゲットから蒸発した炭素蒸気をナノカーボンとして回収する工程と、 光が照射された前記グラフアイト夕ーゲットを、 前記表面の法線方向に 1

を含むことを特徴とするナノカーボンの製造方法。
1 1 . 請求の範囲第 8項乃至第 1 0項いずれかに記載のナノカーボンの製 造方法において、 グラフアイトターゲットの表面に光照射する前記工程およ びグラフアイト夕ーゲット表面に再度光照射する前記工程で、 光の照射位置 を移動させながら光照射することを特徴とするナノカーボンの製造方法。
1 2 . 請求の範囲第 8項乃至第 1 1項いずれかに記載のナノカーボンの製 造方法において、 光を照射された表面を平滑化する前記工程は、 前記グラフ アイト夕ーゲットの表面の一部を除去する工程を含むことを特徴とするナノ 力一ボンの製造方法。
1 3 . 請求の範囲第 8項乃至第 1 2項いずれかに記載のナノカーボンの製 造方法において、 前記グラフアイトターゲッ卜の表面に光照射する前記工程 は、 レーザー光を照射する工程を含むことを特徴とするナノカーボンの製造 方法。
1 4 . 請求の範囲第 8項乃至第 1 3項いずれかに記載のナノカーボンの製 造方法において、 ナノ力一ボンを回収する前記工程は、 カーボンナノホーン 集合体を回収する工程を含むことを特徴とするナノカーボンの製造方法。
