A cet effet, des composés de complexes EDTA-fer sont utilisés dans des solutions de lavage de préférence alcalines, et une forte oxydation ferrique du fer-II en fer-III se produit inévitablement en raison du niveau élevé de l'oxygène atmosphérique dans les gaz de fumée. Pour permettre la réduction du fer-III en fer-II, on utilise des agents de réduction ou des procédés électrolytiques. La consommation nécessaire de l'agent de réduction ou le recours à l'électrolyse sont très onéreux. Afin de réduire de manière significative cette consommation, il est proposé de faire séjourner le liquide de lavage dans un réservoir pendant une durée supérieure à 15 minutes aux fins de réduction. Le temps de séjour est choisi en fonction de la quantié de fer-III à réduire. D'autre part, on peut également influencer sur le degré de séparation de NOx en sélectionnant la masse volumique du liquide de lavage dans la plage comprise entre 1,10 et 1,20 gr/l. Cette invention permet également d'ajouter celle de magnésium à la solution de complexe de chélate ferreux dans le liquide de lavage.
