Description

E. SMITH.
HEATING-STOVE.
No. 9,445, Patente Aug. 15,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIHU SMITH, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB. TO SAMUEL H. RANSOM, TRUSTEE.
DESIGN FOR HEATING-STOVE.
Specification forming part of Design No. 9,445, dated August 15, 1876; application filed April 5, 1875. {Term of Patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIHU SinrTn, of the city and county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a Design for Heating- Stoves, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my design is represented in the accompanying photographic illustration, to which reference is made, as well as to the letters of reference marked thereon, and which form a part of this specification.
A represents the hollow base-section of the stove, and is entirely below the ash-pan chamber B, which is slightly concave in form. C is a convex fire-pot section, provided with mica windows a. This section is supported by a ring, G, of peculiar shape, as shown, forming a division between corresponding sections in the projection on the rear. D is the combustion-chamber, the lower end of which is convex and the upper concave, and it is provided with mica windows d, as shown. This combustion-chamber section is supported upon a middle ring, H, as shown, of pecu liar construction and conformation, extending to the rear to form, with a pipecollar or exit, 0, the upper terminus of the rearwardlyprojccting flue-inclosure e. E is the reservoir-section, made either of sheet or cast metal, as desired. F is the top, which may or not be surmounted by an urn, or any other ornamental figure which may be deemed preferable. K are the legs, cyma-reversa in form, and ornamented with scroll-work, as shown. The base section A is ornamented with beadings, and its top plate is ogee in form near its outer periphery, and the face of the ogee is ornamented with a vine. Above the ogee is a flat,
which is the lower portion of the section B,
hereinafter described. The section B is ornamented with scroll-work. The lower ring G is composed of three members, to wit: a vertical flat, an ogee, and a bevel, the ogee being relieved by being perforated with heart-shaped openings. The fire pot section 0 is ornamented with scroll-work, as shown, and the mica windows a. set therein are oval or oblong in form and ornamented with headings. The ring Hlias a scalloped edge. The com bastionchamber section D is plain, divided into panels, by vertical bars, and it is set with mica lights (I in ornamental oblong or oval frames. The ring I is ornamented with a scalloped edge. The reservoir-section E and top F are ornamented with leaves, scrolls, and headings.
It will he observed that one of the new features of this design for stoves which is most pleasing to the eye, and contributes greatly to the beauty and graceful conformation oftheoutline of the stove, consists in the fire-Pot section 0 intervening between the ash-pitsection B and the combustion-chamber section D, and separated from the said sections by the rings G H, which greatly relieves the lower portion of the stove from the heavy and ungraceful appearance incidental to that of an ash-pit section extending from the base to the fire-pot ring H, such as has been usual in stoves composed of various sections. Another very pleasing feature results from the employment of mica lights set in the said fire-pot section, which not only relieves the stove of that appearance of solidity attending iron plates having a full surface presented to the eye, but also contributes to the elegance of the stove by permitting a cheerful illumination through the micas. Another prominent feature consists in continuing with the ash -pit section B and the fire pot section 0 the extension 0 at the rear of those sections, to form an inclosuro for the ascending and descending lines, and to relieve the stove of all appearance of isolation of any of its necessary parts, and impresses the mind of the beholder with a show of a continuity of parts most agreeable to the eye. Another distinctive and pleasing feature is the relief of the combustion-chaniber at its base from all connection with the exit 0 by the ring H being continued back with the rear extension e of the sections B and U, and producing a finished termination to the said rear extension in a manner tending more to the beauty of the stove than when a mere pipe-collar is employed.
The distinctive features of my invention are found in the form, configuration, and outline of the lower half of my stove, being that portion which has the projection to the rear, in which a very useful purpose is served, not only without loss of artistic Beauty of outline,
but with a positive increase in beauty of outline; in the fire-pot section, with its means of illumination and its rings G and H separating said section from the ash-pit and COIDbllSi1i()ll sections, respectively below and above, said rings extending out and around the rear flue section 6 with graceful curves; in the extension of the ash'pit section and fire-pot section to the rear, to conform nearly to the rear curves of the rings G and H; and in the extension to the rear of the rings G and H and the fire-pot and the ash-pit sections, so as to unite with the rear flue-section and inclose the same throughout its entire length in graceful, pleasing, and harmonious curves.
So far as respects my claims below numbered 1, 6, and 7, I do not Wish to confine myself to the exact form, outline, and configuration or ornamentation shown by me in these particulars, as the same may be changed somewhat, as taste may suggest, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent for fourteen years, 18
1. As a design for a stove, the form, outline, and configuration of the ash-pit section B, the fire-pot section 0, and the rings G and H, substantially as represented.
2. As a design for a stove, the form and outline of the firepot section 0, intermediate between the combnstion-chamber section D, and the ash-pit section B, and made with a convex outline of surface distinctive and separate from the outline of the surfaces of the said adjoining sections, substantially as represented.
3. As a design for a stove, the ring H and fire-pot section 0, substantially as represented.
4. As a design for a stove, the form and out line of the fire-pot section 0, with mica lights a, and the ring G below and ring H above, substan tially as represented.
5. The form and outline of the design for a stove constructed of sections A B C D, and the section-dividing rings G H I, substantially as represented.
6. As a design for a stove, the form and outline of the concave section B, with its rearward projection e, substantially as represented.
7. The form and outline and ornamentation for a design of a stove, substantially as represented.
